Experimental study on the mechanical behavior and design method of plain steel-plate and concrete composite bridge decks

Abstract:Steel-plate and concrete composite slabs are composed of common steel plate and concrete connected by shear connectors such as perfobond ribs (usually abbreviated as PBL),studs and channels. An experiment of six specimens of such composite slabs,all connected by PBL connectors,was conducted to study its mechanical behaviors. Based on the experimental results,the influences of the transverse bars in the holes of the PBL connectors,the nominal shear-span of the slabs as well as the space between the PBL connectors were studied. During the experimental process,the failure modes,concrete strains,types of cracking,interface slippage and bearing capacity of the decks were studied. From the experimental study,it could be found that all these deck specimens were failed in typical bending mode,no slippage between the steel plate and concrete were measured at the composite bridge decks,which exhibited high flexural rigidity,good ductility as well as better bearing capacity,indicating that the strength of both the bottom steel plate and the top concrete were fully utilized. Calculation methods for the bend-bearing capacity of the composite decks were proposed. It can be concluded that this type of composite bridge decks are advantageous in mechanical behaviors,and should be more widely studied and applied.
