Comparison of VOC emissions from the same carpets by headspace analysis and dynamic chamber test

Abstract:Headspace analysis and dynamic chamber test are both widely used to detect the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from building materials. Normally, headspace analysis is used to screen the kind of compounds emitted from a material, whereas dynamic chamber test gives the detailed emission performance data. In this paper, we measured the individual VOCs emitted from the same carpets by both headspace analysis and dynamic chamber test, and found discrepancy of VOCs detected by these two methods. Generally, the headspace samples contained many compounds that could not be found in dynamic chamber test. In addition, the dominant VOCs found by these two methods are not the same. The results indicate that for highly sorptive materials such as carpets, headspace analysis may give inaccurate indication of actual VOC emissions. Dynamic chamber test with certain time period is needed in order to measure the true emission characteristics.
