Abstract:We propose an all-fiber band-rejection filter with a tunable bandwidth, which is realized by putting a normal long-period fiber grating in series with a rotary long-period fiber grating written in a twisted single-mode fiber by CO2 laser pulses. Bandwidth tuning is achieved by applying torsion to the composite grating. Our experimental filter shows a bandwidth tuning of similar to 16.3 nm at a rejection level of similar to 15 dB and a polarization-dependent loss lower than similar to 0.9 dB. Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber structured programmable optical bandpass filter (waveshaper) based on a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating and a digital-controlled thermal array. The key parameters of this filter such as the number of transmission channels, passing bandwidth per channel, central wavelength as well as the channel spacing can be reconfigured independently and flexibly by a program-controlled circuit. We have achieved in experiments the tunable passing bandwidth ranging from < 0.04 to 1.55 nm, adjustable central wavelength ranging from 1,547.16 to 1,558.64 nm, and a minimum wavelength spacing of 0.91 nm. The insertion loss of the whole device and the sideband rejection ratio are about 1.76 and 28 dB, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a photonic microwave transversal filter with a multiple-fiber resonator formed by cascaded fiber Bragg gratings. The filter-free spectral range is extended via the Vernier effect, which can increase the filter rejection bandwidth and suppress the unwanted periodic passbands. Abstract:This paper proposes a new type of compact tunable bandpass filter with bandwidth tuning and out-of-band fixed rejection. Because we employ the modified Hilbert fractal structure loaded with varactors as resonators, the tunable filter has a very compact configuration and a constant shape over the entire tuning range. The frequency selectivity is improved by introducing a cross coupling between the source and the load. As a result of the utilization of a pair of properly designed feedlines, the frequency tuning and the out-of-band rejection of the filter are independent of each other, which simplifies its operation significantly. Two filter prototypes have been realized with the same size of 25.0 × 17.0 × 1.0 mm3. Their superior performances have been demonstrated experimentally, with good agreement obtained between their simulated and measured S-parameters.

Abstract:A band-selectable and bandwidth-enhanced flat-top rejection filter is proposed and demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally, which is realized by using single-mode fiber (SMF)-based helical long-period fiber gratings (HLPGs) precisely operated at dispersion turning points (DTPs) of the same azimuthal order cladding mode but with different radial indices. As an important application of such HLPGs, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode converters enabling to have either a flat-top bandwidth of ~116 nm@-16 dB but centered at wavelength of ~1530 nm, or a flat-top bandwidth ~130 nm @-16 dB but centered at wavelength of ~1650 nm, have been successfully demonstrated. This is the first report for the experimental demonstration of such high-performance band-rejection filters with bands fully matching the C-L bands of the fiber communication. The proposed HLPGs may find potential applications to OAM mode converters, OAM tweezers, and OAM sensors.

Abstract:Broad band-rejection all fiber filters based on Long Period Fiber Gratings were fabricated by a novel method. Adopting the grating period Lambda =550 mum, and Lambda =610 mum, number of periods N=15 and different heating condition, the two kinds of devices are obtained with different band-rejection peak wavelengths at 1310nm and 1550nm, respectively. The isolation is more than 25 dB. The bandwidth at the 10nm isolation point is over 20nm. The insertion loss is less than 1.2 dB and backward reflection loss is less than -70dB.

Abstract:A new approach for designing multiband rejection filters is proposed based on the optimization of a periodically phase-shifted long period fiber grating (LPG). The validity of the method is demonstrated by performing simulations for the typical cases. It is shown that using the proposed synthesis method, spectral position, and bandwidth of the each reflection band can be controlled by varying the grating length and the phase shifting period. In addition, a desired number of rejection bands within the transmission spectrum can be generated using a phase-shifted LPG with an optimized phase shifting series. Furthermore, a number of unwanted rejection bands can easily be removed from the transmission spectrum by optimizing the phase shifting series.

Abstract:A silicon photonic wire filter based on an asymmetric side-wall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. The operating principle is based on the contra-directional coupling between the transverse electric fundamental (TE0) and first-order (TE1) modes, which is enabled by the asymmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations. An asymmetric Y-junction is cascaded at the input port of the filter so as to drop the Bragg reflection. Compared with conventional Bragg grating-based filters, this device eliminates the back reflection at the input port and the 6 dB inherent insertion loss at the drop port; moreover, a narrow 3 dB bandwidth can be obtained with a large critical dimension as a result of the weak coupling strength between the TE0 and TE1 modes inside the multimode waveguide. Experimental results show that a bandwidth of similar to 2.8 nm is achieved by a large corrugation width of 150 nm. The insertion loss at the drop port is -2.1 dB, and the extinction ratio is -33 dB at the through port. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A broadband tunable silicon filter has been demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. The device is based on the loop of multimode anti-symmetric waveguide Bragg grating. A wide bandwidth tunability about 1.455 THz (0.117-1.572 THz) is achieved. The device, functions like a ring, can realize the bandwidth tunable of the drop port and the through port. And, its feature has simultaneous wavelength tuning and no free space ranges limitation. A high out-of-band contrast of 30 dB is achieved with a bandwidth of 1.572 THz (Δλ = 13 nm). The out-of-band contrast is 18 dB at the minimum bandwidth 0.117 THz (Δλ = 1.0 nm).

Abstract:A band-pass filter based on mechanically-induced multi-π-shifted long-period fiber gratings is proposed. The pass band width of the filter depends on the number N of the sub-gratings divided by π-shifts in the long-period fiber grating. The depth of the two lateral rejection bands can be changed by the amount of pressure applied to the fiber. This paper demonstrates a multi-π-shifted long-period fiber grating created by pressing a fiber between two periodically grooved plates. For N = 7 and LP12 mode coupling, the extinction ratio is 22.22 dB, and the pass band loss is 0.85 dB. For LP12 mode coupling, the pass band width varies from 14.23 nm to 39.31 nm when N increases from 2 to 10.

Abstract:An electro-optical tunable filter comprised of two paralleled identical long-period waveguide gratings is proposed in this paper. The filter has one input port and two separate output ports, outputting band-pass and band-rejection light respectively. Using poled electro-optical polymer material to fabricate its waveguide cores enable the filter’s tuning speed to approach nanosecond order. With the aid of long-period waveguide gratings, the tuning range of the filter is Λ times larger than the conventional electro-optical filters. We built up a model to design and simulate the proposed tunable optical filter. We investigate the relationship between the parameters of the long-period waveguide grating and the characteristics of the tunable filter, such as tuning range and FWHM. The simulation results show that the tunable optical filter can realize high-speed tuning in the wavelength range of 1530 nm to 1560 nm, and the FWHM width can reach 0.8 nm. Compared with the conventional optical filters, the results show that a high-speed widely tunable optical filter with narrow pass band can be achieved.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel method to produce a flat-top band-rejection filter, which is realized by successively cascading two helical long-period fiber gratings (HLPG) with opposite helicities. Unlike most of the other LPG-based flat-top filters obtained to date, the proposed HLPGs have no complex apodization in the grating's amplitude, and only a relatively shorter length (less than 4.6 cm) is needed, thus making this kind of HLPGs easily and particularly suitable to be fabricated by using the CO2 laser technique. As an example, a flat-top filter with a bandwidth of ~13 nm@0.5dB and ~15 nm@1dB has been successfully obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel optical waveguide-type ring resonator by inserting titled waveguide gratings (TWGs) with the Brewster's angle is proposed. Using the Marcatili approximation, the electric fields for a rectangular waveguide is obtained. Then, the volume current method (VCM) is first developed for rectangular-core TWGs. By the VCM, the feasibility of the TWGs to filter the s-polarized light propagating in the resonator is proved. When a 4-cm-long 45°-titled TWG is applied to a silica waveguide-ring resonator, a polarization extinction ratio of 40 dB is obtained. The influences of the angular misalignment as well as the grating period of the TWGs are also evaluated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-bandwidth tunable optical filter in the telecommunication wavelength region near 1550 nm using photorefractive grating. Holographic gratings could be written by plane waves of green light using CW 532nm laser as recording source. The filter could be tuned by changing the grating spacing by means of changing the incident angle of the recording beams of grating. Through theoretically consideration, we get a diffractive efficiency up to 80% and a bandwidth less than 0.1nm. Besides, we propose a holographic recording setup.

Abstract:The voltage-controllable multichannel filter based on multiply cascaded long-period fiber gratings with a divided coil heater will be proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It has several advantages of the large tuning range in both C- and L-band, multichannel operation, multiwavelength electivity, and bandwidth controllability. The tunable bandpass filter based on long-period fiber gratings ith the broad bandwidth over 6.5 nm, large tuning range over 30 nm, and excellent side mode suppression more than 40 dB will be also discussed.
