Abstract:This study was carried out by Eka Chemicals, Sweden and South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China with the aim to evaluate the effects of different strategies in the haft cooking and bleaching of bamboo on the ability to form cellulosic nano fibers in a subsequent TEMPO-mediated oxidation process.The cooking conditions and chemical dosages were chosen to obtain different kappa number levels and different fiber properties. In total four different cooking strategies were studied. The kappa number level ranged from 7.9 to 25.5. The two most different pulps were selected for consecutive ECF bleaching using two strategies, a standard DQ(PO) sequence and a unconventional D(Pfx) sequence. The (Pfx) stage is a hydrogen peroxide stage at acid pH with iron as a hydroxyl radical inducer aimed at disrupting the fiber matrix. After TEMPO oxidation of unbleached and bleached pulp, the samples were mechanically delaminated in a mixer to form cellulosic nano fibers solutions.The results surprisingly showed that strategies aimed at opening fiber matrix, e.g. harsh cooking conditions and unselective bleaching did not facilitate formation of cellulosic nano fibers as anticipated. Contrary to what was expected it was indicated that preservative cooking and bleaching resulted in samples most suitable for cellulosic nano fiber formation showed by high optical transparency and viscosity of oxidized and mechanically treated suspensions.The investigation has no ambitions to in depth explain, describe, characterize or define cellulosic nano fibers but should be read as a screening study.
