Abstract:Volume holographic imaging system (VHIS) incorporates a volume hologram grating (VHG) as the critical optical field processing component in a new imaging system.High spectral resolution and high sensitivity in obtaining 3D information at multi-depths are achieved without time consuming scanning mechanism and complex reconstruction algorithms by utilizing the Bragg diffraction selectivity and degeneracy properties.We briefly introduced the system structures and principles,then we presented intensively on how these VHGs were devised and VHIS were configured into the qualified spectral VHIS (S-VHIS) and multiplexed VHG imaging systems.The superiorities over conventional imaging systems and the features to be improved of VHIS were summarized and discussed.
Flat Optical Lens by Use of 90-Degree Volume Holographic Grating Recording Geometry and Nonvolatile Thermal Fixing in LiNbO3:Fe Crystal

Abstract:A new design and fabrication of flat optical lens by use of 90-degree volume holographic grating recording geometry is presented. It is recorded by the interference of a plane wave and a spherical wave in a Fe-doped LiNbO3. The flat optical lens can laterally transfer and focus the plane wave which perpendicularly incidents on the planar crystal surface. The optimal switching from recording to thermal fixing is taken into consideration in order to obtain the nonvolatile hologram with maximum fixing efficiency. The flat optical lens with different recording and reconstructing wavelength has also been discussed. The flat optical lens has the advantages of light weight, laterally transferring and focusing, small duty ratio, and easy for the microstructure integration. The testing results measured verify that the flat optical lens can successfully be used for the free space optical communication.

Abstract:Holographic techniques enable precise laser manipulation, but suffer from two considerable limitations: speckle and deterioration of axial distribution. Here, we propose a cylindrical quadratic phase (CQP) method with temporal focusing (TF) to generate speckle-free holographic illumination with high axial resolution. TF-CQP utilizes a superposed cylindrical phase as the initial guess to iteratively optimize phase hologram, realizing speckle-free holographic reconstruction on the target focal plane and eliminating secondary focus on the defocused planes. TF-CQP further disperses defocused beams symmetrically by a blazed grating, placed conjugate to the focal plane, which enhances axial confinement. Simulation and experimental results show that TF-CQP reconstructs speckle-free illumination with arbitrary shapes and <10 µm axial resolution. Compared to TF-GS (Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm), widely used in holographic optogenetics, TF-CQP shows increased uniformity of 200% and improved modulation efficiency of 32.33% for parallel holographic illumination, as well as a 10% increment in axial resolution.

Abstract:The imaging resolution is enhanced with multiple diffraction orders from a grating in front of the sensor in lens-less digital holography. A 1024×1024 image is reconstructed from a 640×480 hologram with the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Through theoretical analysis it is found that the cross talk performances of a volume hologram with a spherical reference wave are some what better than those with a planar reference wave. This phenomenon was explained and demonstrated by experiments. After comparing the readout images by a spherical reference wave with those by a planar reference wave, it is also verified that the spherical reference wave is of little effects on the readout image quality. These features imply that the requirements on the parallelism of the reference beam in a volume holographic memory are not so rigorous. In addition, a phenomenal analytical expression to approximately calculate the relative diffraction efficiency of a volume hologram with a spherical reference beam was presented.

Abstract:Volume holograms exhibit the characteristic of multiple optical functions in a common area by multiple exposure in preparation. From the characteristic, it is expected to be applied to large capacity recording medium and diffractive optical elements with unique functions. In this study, volume holograms are investigated to apply to diffractive optical elements for high-definition imaging of nanostructure. The assumed volume holographic diffractive optical element exhibits a function that light waves from two-point sources with a distance shorter than the wavelength are diffracted as plane waves with different wave vectors. When a volume hologram is prepared by exposing the interference fringes consist of a point source light and a plane wave, a plane wave is diffracted by illuminating a point source light onto the volume hologram. However, the wave vector of the diffracted plane wave is changed and the diffraction efficiency is decreased by shifting the position of the point source light. By wave vector filtering, the diffracted plane wave from a point source at shifted position becomes not to be detected. A volume hologram can be prepared that the point source at the shifted position is diffracted as a plane wave with a different wave vector by multiple exposure. Then, two-point sources can be resolved. The distance between two-point sources is called shift-selectivity. For preparing the volume holographic optical element, a photopolymer with a thickness of 10 mm was used to obtain short shift selectivity. The photopolymer was exposed by using a semiconductor lase with a wavelength of 405 nm. In this condition, a shift selectivity of 100 nm was achieved.
Highly Efficient Waveguide Display with Space-Variant Volume Holographic Gratings.

Abstract:We propose a highly efficient waveguide display based on space-variant volume holographic gratings (SVVHGs). The local period and slant angle of the SVVHG vary along the tangential direction, enabling variant incident angles to satisfy the Bragg condition of the local gratings. As a result, we enlarge the field of view (FOV) without using the conventional multiplexing scheme, while achieving high efficiency and large FOV at the same time. We experimentally record the SVVHGs on Bayfol HX200 films. We demonstrate that the proposed display can achieve 31.9% system efficiency for a broadband light source and 52.3% for a coherent light source, 20° FOV, and high brightness uniformity, making it a promising candidate for widespread applications in the augmented reality (AR) industry.

Abstract:We propose a full-color see-through three-dimensional (3D) display method based on volume holography. This method is based on real object interference, avoiding the device limitation of spatial light modulator (SLM). The volume holography has a slim and compact structure, which realizes 3D display through one single layer of photopolymer. We analyzed the recording mechanism of volume holographic gratings, diffraction characteristics, and influencing factors of refractive index modulation through Kogelnik's coupled-wave theory and the monomer diffusion model of photopolymer. We built a multiplexing full-color reflective volume holographic recording optical system and conducted simultaneous exposure experiment. Under the illumination of white light, full-color 3D image can be reconstructed. Experimental results show that the average diffraction efficiency is about 53%, and the grating fringe pitch is less than 0.3 mu m. The reconstructed image of volume holography has high diffraction efficiency, high resolution, strong stereo perception, and large observing angle, which provides a technical reference for augmented reality.
Tunable Volume Holographic Filter Based On The Photorefractive Grating

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-bandwidth tunable optical filter in the telecommunication wavelength region near 1550 nm using photorefractive grating. Holographic gratings could be written by plane waves of green light using CW 532nm laser as recording source. The filter could be tuned by changing the grating spacing by means of changing the incident angle of the recording beams of grating. Through theoretically consideration, we get a diffractive efficiency up to 80% and a bandwidth less than 0.1nm. Besides, we propose a holographic recording setup.

Abstract:We report on the enhanced holographic performance by employing a strong volume holographic absorption grating induced by localized surface plasmon resonance effect in a bulk gold nanoparticles doped photopolymer. The contributions of plasmon-induced volume holographic absorption grating is characterized through the Kogelnik's coupled wave model and demonstrated experimentally by using two-beam interference technology. At the 0.05 vol. % concentration of the gold nanoparticles in the bulk photopolymer, 101.8% increase in the diffraction efficiency and more than four times suppression of the first side lobe in angular selectivity have been achieved.

Abstract:The volume holographic storage optical system can be simplified, using the common optical axis for signal beam and reference beam by locating two diffusers on both sides of the incident plane. However, in this kind of holographic storage optical system, the total numerical aperture for signal beam and reference beam is much larger than the numerical aperture for signal beam. The design requirement and optical parameter determination about signal optical path and reference optical path in this volume holographic storage optical system have be analyzed. In order to correct aberration in positive optical path and reverse optical path for the object beam, and meet the demand of reference beam at the same time, the multi-configuration method has been adopted to optimize the positine and reverse optical path of the object beam and the optical path of the reference beam. A holographic storage optical system with common optical axis for signal beam and reference beam achieving diffractive-limit has been designed. The focal lengths of the front and rear group lens are 33 mm and 30 mm, respectively, its front work distance is 30 mm, its back group lens has 30 mm focal length, its total numerical aperture for signal beam and reference beam is 0.53, and the wave aberration of the system is less than 0.071λ.

Abstract:A spectral device based on multiple holographic gratings is proposed. Several volume holograms are superimposed into a common volume of photorefractive crystal Fe:LiNbO 3 using the wavelength and angular multiplexing method. This device is implemented by only one single wavelength laser using a two-lambda method. The imaging function of the device is realized with convergent recording beams. It can reduce the spectral system because the focusing lens is removed. Because the diffraction efficiency and the spectral resolution of the superimposed volume holographic gratings could be very high, the spectral device could achieve attracting characteristics of the diffraction efficiency and spectral resolution. Theoretical analysis and model design are presented and a discrete spectral device working at four wavelengths is demonstrated. The device has a uniform diffraction efficiency of 10% and the resolution of 1 to 2 nm. In addition, it has the advantages of wide spectral coverage, simple structure, and flexible design.

Abstract:To reveal the fundamental characteristic of the volume holographic waveguide for a head-mounted display (HMD), we analyzed the resolution of a virtual image. We built a mathematical model considering the off-Bragg diffraction for each ray angle of the signal light ray. The display resolution performance of the HMD depended on the thickness of the waveguide and the ray angle. At the lowest-resolution ray angle, the input-point image was broadened more than 0.1° in a viewing angle for a 1-mm-thick waveguide. Conversely, our previously proposed line-symmetric image-input method, in which the input images were symmetrically arranged with respect to the center line, improved the resolution performance and luminance uniformity. We observed that the spread of the point image was suppressed to 0.01°, which was a sufficient resolution for a person with a visual acuity of 0.8.

Abstract:The classic Denisyuk recording method is commonly used to reproduce three-dimensional (3D) image of volume holography, but its diffraction efficiency is low, and white light irradiation is required to obtain high-brightness reproduced image. Aiming at the above problem, the diffraction characteristics of transmissive and reflective volume holographic gratings are analyzed by Kogelnik’s coupled wave theory. A two-step volume holographic recording method is proposed. Firstly, the transmissive volume hologram is recorded and then the reconstructed image is transferred to the reflective volume hologram. Finally, through this method, the brightness and field of view of the reproduced image are improved, and a clear and bright 3D image can be observed under natural light.

Abstract:To make full use of the spatial bandwidth product of imaging systems, grating based single-shot digital lens-free holography with spatial spectrum multiplexing is proposed. Multiple object waves are generated by a one-dimensional grating which is placed in near contact with the object to avoid the crosstalk among different diffraction orders during reconstruction. A multiplexed off-axis hologram is created by interference between the object waves and reference wave and captured by an image sensor in one shot. Multiple imaging areas corresponding to the captured object waves can be simultaneously retrieved during reconstruction, which is equivalent to increase the imaging area. A formula which guarantees accurate full FOV imaging without crosstalk or information loss is presented. The imaging experiments of a USAF resolution target are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this method.
Volume holograms with linear diffraction efficiency relation by (3+1)D printing

Abstract:We demonstrate the fabrication of volume holograms using 2-photon polymerization with dynamic control of light exposure. We refer to our method as (3+1)D printing. Volume holograms that are recorded by interfering reference and signal beams have a diffraction efficiency relation that is inversely proportional with the square of the number of superimposed holograms. By using (3+1)D printing for fabrication, the refractive index of each voxel is created independently and thus by, digitally filtering the undesired interference terms, the diffraction efficiency is now inversely proportional to the number of multiplexed gratings. We experimentally demonstrated this linear dependence by recording M=50 volume gratings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of distributed volume holograms that overcome the 1/M^2 limit.

Abstract:To satisfy needs of high resolution three-dimension(3-D) display for big data,an angular multiplexing based volume holographic display technology is proposed.Wavefront of 3-D scene is encoded as computer-generated holograms.Holograms are recorded in gold nanoparticles doped photopolymer with angular multiplexing.With recorded holograms,3-D scenes could be viewed at different angles.In volume holographic three-dimensional display experiment system,total number of single-point pixels in volume holographic material recording area is 120×1 920× 1 080,and spatial bandwidth product is 2.5× 108,which is 120 times higher than that of spatial light modulator.
Design Optimization of Volume Holographic Gratings for Wavelength Filters

Abstract:Volume holography is promising for devices such as wavelength filters. However, in previously reported work with these holographic devices the diffraction efficiency and wavelength selectivity were not so satisfactory, which affected the insertion loss and channel spacing of the device respectively. In order to investigate the performances for most of the volume holographic devices which are of finite size and with 90 degree geometry, two-dimensional (2-D) coupled-wave theory is more accurate than that based on the well-known Kogelnik's coupled-wave theory. In this paper a close-form analytical solution to 2-D coupled wave theory for 2-D restricted gratings is presented firstly. Then in order to achieve the optimum insertion loss and channel spacing for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) filters, diffraction properties, especially effects of the grating strength and grating size ratio on the peak diffraction efficiency and wavelength selectivity are researched based on the 2-D coupled-wave theory and its solution. The results show that this solution is capable of design optimization of volume holographic gratings for various devices, including wavelength filters. And the design optimization is given in order to gain the optimum peak diffraction efficiency and wavelength selectivity. Finally, some experimental results showing the angular selectivity for different grating size ratio are given, which agree well with the 2-D coupled-wave theory.
