Abstract:We report a passively mode-locked high repetition rate erbium-doped femtosecond fiber laser via nonlinear polarization rotation, with a fundamental repetition rate of 101.94 MHz. Abstract:We report on a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with a repetition rate as low as 1.2 MHz in a strong normal dispersion regime. The laser was mode locked via spectral filtering. It generated a pulse with large and linear chirp that can be dechirped to 430 fs outside the cavity.

Abstract:We report a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) with phase shift compensation. The SESAM shows a uniform low-intensity reflectivity and a modulation depth up to 12% for the wavelength from 1000 to 1100 nm. A linear cavity all-normal dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser has proved its mode locking performance for the wavelength of both 1030 nm and 1064 nm.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.

Abstract:We report on the formation of the nanosecond pulse in an erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked with a molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2)-deposited microfiber. The evolution of the pulse states from slightly chirped picosecond pulse to highly chirped nanosecond pulse was observed. As the pump power increases to a certain value, the picosecond pulse abruptly transforms into nanosecond pulse with the pulse duration of 70 ns and the maximum pulse energy of 21 nJ at the fundamental repetition rate of 3.54 MHz. With the advantages of high pulse energy, large pulse duration, and low peak power, the nanosecond pulse could be destined for amplification and compression to achieve high-power applications promisingly.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low repetition rate mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser using an all-polarization-maintaining (PM) nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. Stable single pulse generation had a pulse energy of 4 nJ and a repetition rate as low as 1.96 MHz. A section of standard single mode PM fiber was used to compress the output pulses from 2.5 ps down to 660 fs, being nearly transform-limited. The robust mode-locking design and all-PM cavity make this fiber laser stable and compact. The output average power fluctuation is within 0.17% over 10 h. Therefore, this source is ideally suitable for high pulse energy applications, such as micro-machining and nonlinear microscopy through further amplification.

Abstract:A low-repetition-rate, all-polarization-maintaining (PM)-fiber sub-nanosecond oscillator is presented, which is simple and low-cost, composed of standard components. The ring cavity is elongated by 114-m-long standard PM fiber, and passively mode-locked by a fiber pigtailed semiconductor saturable absorber. Linearly polarized pulses with 1.66 MHz repetition rate and 22 dB polarization extinction ratio are generated at a wavelength of 1030 nm, which is determined by an intracavity filter. In addition, to demonstrate that the oscillator is a good seed for high energy pulse generation, an all-fiber master oscillator power amplifier is built and amplified pulses with energy about 2μJ are obtained.

Abstract:We report on a SESAM mode-locked all-normal-dispersion all-polarization-maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped picosecond fiber laser. The linear cavity oscillator utilizes a narrowband filter for pulse shaping for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Stable mode-locked pulses with a repetition rate of 29 MHz are achieved under a maximum average output power of 35.9 mW. The linearly polarized pulses have a full width at half maximum of 4 nm at a central wavelength of 1032 nm, and a 20.6 ps pulse duration with pulse energies of 1.2 nJ. Compared to the reported experiment scheme of the generation of the picosecond pulses, the presented all-PM-fiber linear cavity mode-locked oscillator with spectral filter as pulse modulation component provides a new method for the realization of the compact-sized low-cost high-performance picosecond pulses and has important potential applications in a seeding master–oscillator power amplification system.

Abstract:Pico-second solid-state lasers with multi-watt average power and multi-kilowatt peak power are required for numerous applications such as UV generation and pumping of optical parametric oscillators for RGB laser TV display. In the past few years laser diode bars as pump source with continue output power of hundreds watts or more have become commercially available. LD side pumping YAG laser module can be used to generate high reputation mode locked output pulse with SESAM (Semiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror) as an end cavity mirror. In this paper, we demonstrate an all solid-state mode-locked YAG laser with three-mirror folded cavity with a SESAM mirror, 80MHz pulse rate, about 10ps pulse width, and 2W 1064 nn output power. Thermal effect of laser rod, and polarization of intra-cavity beam are considered in laser cavity design. The enhancement of laser performance and decreasing Q switching effect are discussed. Further investigation is greatly needed.

Abstract:Semiconductor disk lasers (SDLs) have advantages of high output power and good beam quality. Its flexible external cavity provides convenience for inserting additional optical element to start mode locking and produce ultra-short pulse train with duration from picosecond to femtosecond. However, the very short lifetime of about a few nanoseconds to tens of nanosecond of the carrier in semiconductor gain medium limits the decrease of pulse repetition rate, thus restrict the increase of peak power of the mode-locked laser pulse to some extent. In this work, by using the relatively shallow In0.2GaAs quantum wells, which has a relatively long carrier lifetime in the active region of gain chip, as well as the particularly designed semiconductor saturable absorption mirror (SESAM) that with a relatively small saturation flux, a passively mode-locked SDL with low repetition rate and high peak power is demonstrated. The used six-mirror cavity has a spot radius of about 200 μm on the chip and a 40 μm spot on the SESAM, and the total cavity length is about of 1.92 m. The SESAM passively mode-locked SDL produces a stable pulses train with the lowest repetition rate of 78 MHz. When the temperature is 12°C and the transmittance of the output coupler is T = 3%, an average output power of 2.1 W and a pulse duration of 2.08 ps are achieved. The corresponding pulse peak power reaches 12.8 kW, which is about twice of the reported highest peak power in a SESAM mode-locked SDL. When T = 2% and T = 5%, the obtained average output power are 1.34 W and 1.62 W respectively, and the corresponding pulse peak power are 8.17 kW and 9.88 kW. Based on the reported literatures and the results of pulse repetition rate in our experiments, the estimated lifetime of the carriers of the In0.2GaAs quantum wells in the active region of the gain used chip is 16.4 ns. This high peak power mode-locked semiconductor disk laser has important potential applications in biomedical photonics, chemistry, and nonlinear microscopy.
