Abstract:We combine experimental analysis and modeling to investigate the complex mechanical behaviors of copolymer elastomers. Experimental studies are conducted to analyze the impact of monomer ratio, strain rate, and loading mode on the response of copolymer elastomers, which reveal the distinct hyperelastic, viscoelastic, damage and self-recovery behaviors of the materials. Based on the experimental observations, we develop a finite deformation hyperelastic-viscoelastic constitutive model, which incorporates multiple discrete relaxation processes. For the hyperelastic process, an extended eight-chain model is employed. Different from the classic viscoelastic model, the strain hardening and damage/recovery mechanisms are also included in the relaxation processes. The model successfully describes the complex mechanical responses observed in elastomers, including quasi-static loading, strain rate effects, and stress relaxation phenomena. Additionally, the model captures the behavior of elastomers during loading-unloading cycles in a reasonable manner. The work offers an efficient theoretical tool for the design and practical application of elastomers.

Abstract:In this paper, the elastic behavior of a polymethylene (PM) chain is investigated by using a realist rotational-isomeric-state (RIS) model. In our calculation, the non-local interactions between pairs of segments in polymethylene chain are also considered, and the Lennard-Jones (L-J) potential function is adopted Chain dimensions and thermodynamics statistical properties PM chains with various elongation ratios lambda are calculated. We find, that the elastic force increases slowly with elongation ratio for small lambda, and abruptly for large lambda. In the meantime, the energy contribution to elastic force, is negative and significant, especially for large lambda. Our calculations may provide some insight into the macroscopic phenomena of rubber elasticity.

Abstract:A photo-induced bending polymer has a two-way shape memory function.Its potential on photo-driven actuator is enormous.The mechanical and photo-induce bending properties is necessary basis of the actuator design and analysis.Tensile test results show that the polymer has similar properties as linear elastic materials.The elastic modulus of the tested materials is also obtained.Analysis of the photo-induced bending phenomenon derives a formula for calculating curvature.Based on this formula,the measured data from photo-induced bending experiment are dealt with using nonlinear fitting method to get the parameters of photo-induced bending properties.The calculated value fit the experimental value well.It proves that the curvature formula and the parameters are reasonable.

Abstract:In this paper, a light-induced bending model is proposed to simulate the bending deflection and stress distribution of certain photochromic liquid crystal elastomer, basing on the simple beam theory. An optical bending moment is applied to replace the effect of light. As a result, the stress distribution along the thickness is nonlinear, with two or three zero-stress planes. A two-dimensional finite element analysis is further implemented to analyze the bending behavior and the stress distribution.

Abstract:Light induced bending of photochromic liquid crystal polymer (LCP) thin films sandwiched with some transparent polymer substrates is studied. Kirchhoff plate model is analyzed. We found that under the irradiation of light with suitable wavelength, an effective bending moment of the composite film will be produced and has two contributions, the opto moment and the bi-film moment. The opto moment is due to the inhomogeneous distribution of the light induced contraction resulted from the light absorption decay. It acts as a bending moment for single layered LCP film as well and has been studied by many authors. The bi-film moment, on the hand, is resulted from the homogeneous contraction induced by light and will act only to the composite similar to the well-known bi-metal bending. By utilizing the two contributions, the magnitude of the total effective moment and the bending curvature can be enhanced largely. Moreover, the bending direction can be well controlled by suitable design of the multilayered structures. The variational formulation of the bending equation is derived, according to which any commercial finite element code can be used to simulate the light induced bending behavior under various boundary conditions. Some interesting bending patterns of the film composites are shown to be possibly produced by patterned layer structures.

Abstract:Photopolymerization-based 3D printing has emerged as a key technology in hydrogel manufacturing, broadening the attributes of hydrogels and extending their applications into diverse engineering fields. However, the mechanical properties of hydrogels dramatically impact the functionality and quality in practice. It is necessary to develop an appropriate theoretical model to predict the evolution of the mechanical properties of hydrogels during the photopolymerization process. In this work, systematical experiments were performed to investigate mechanical properties of PAAm hydrogel under different photopolymerization condition. The results reveal a noticeable increasement in both elastic and viscous behavior of hydrogel with the advancement of polymerization. To fully capture the experimental observations, we developed a coupled photo-chemo-mechanical theoretical framework that integrates reaction kinetics with a physically-based viscoelastic constitutive model. Within this model, the degree of conversion serves as an internal variable, which related to microscopic structures such as correlation length, and tube diameter. The developed model exhibits remarkable prediction ability for hydrogels with various degree of polymerization. The current work paves a potentially new avenue for understanding the evolution of mechanical properties in photopolymerized hydrogels, providing theoretical guidance for the manufacturing of hydrogels through photopolymerization-based 3D printing.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, the microscale mechanical properties of 3D printed multi-layered polymeric structure were investigated by indentation experiments. The indentation modulus appears to be periodically varied inside the multi-layered structure and the overall stiffness of a structure was highly dependent on its printing condition. To elucidate the evolution of the nonuniform mechanical properties, we develop a thermodynamically consistent model which coupled the photopolymerization kinetics together with the reaction-dependent viscoelastic deformation. A correlation between the periodic mechanical properties and the stepwise photopolymerization 3D processing is investigated through the finite element simulations using the theoretical model. Suggestions on how to increase the printing speed of a structure without undermining its mechanical performance are provided.</p>

Abstract:Several kinds of photodeformable polymer systems containing azobenzenes, capable of generating photomechanical effects, are reviewed. In polymer amorphous systems including monolayers, gels and solid films, trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moieties accompanied by geometrical and dipolar changes caused contraction and expansion of the systems. Recently, polymer liquid-crystalline elastomers containing azobenzenes, a novel system able to produce the photomechanical effects, have been developed to achieve fast and large photoinduced deformations. It is interesting that not only photoinduced contraction but also photoinduced bending have been achieved. These deformations are ascribed to the subtle variation in microscopic ordering during the photochemical phase transition of the polymer liquid-crystalline elastomers. This new photomechanical system is potential for application in driving micromachines and nanomachines without the aid of batteries, motors and gears.

Abstract:A series of photomechanical fibers was fabricated with a thermal drawing method by using liquid-crystalline random copolymers containing azobenzene and biphenyl groups in side chain. After being post-cross-linked under mild conditions, these fibers showed photoinduced bending motion away from the light source even though homogeneous alignment of mesogens was observed along the drawing direction. This abnormal photoinduced deformation of the obtained fibers is far different from previously reported light-directed motions about liquid-crystalline fiber and film materials. The interesting photomechanical deformation can be ascribed to the surface volume expansion caused by photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties. Then the photoinduced bending behaviors of these fibers containing different azobenzene concentrations and cross-linking densities were systematically investigated, suggesting that the location of photoresponsive azobenzene played an important role in deciding their photomechanical behaviors. This provides one convenient way of controlling over the photoinduced bending direction through the location of light-active moieties in side chain or cross-linker. In addition, irradiation of visible light accelerated the recovery of bent fibers. These fibers possess quick response, large deformation, and good thermal stability, indicating their promising applications for smart devices and energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Photochromic liquid crystal elastomer is a kind of new smart material.Its combination of liquid crystal and rubber properties makes it able to be actuated by both light and thermo,which brings it a bright prospect in industry.The properties of light-induced bending in photochromic liquid crystal elastomer beam were mainly studied.According to the one dimensional linear constitutive relation of this material and with the small deformation assumption,the light-induced bending model was derived with simple beam theory.The effect of light was substituted as an effective moment.The effects of the parameters,such as light intensity,thickness of the beam and decay distance of the material,on the effective moment and its evolution were analyzed.With the effective moment,the curvature of free beam and the restraining force of hyperstatic beam were expressed analytically.The stress distribution of the beam and the number of neutral planes were calculated,and the effects of the parameters on them were analyzed.As a result,the light-induced inhomogeneous contraction of the liquid crystal elastomer is the reason for the effective moment and bending.The effects of parameters couple with each other,and are nonlinear.There are two or three neutral planes in the light-induced bending beam,whose stress distribution is totally different from the common ones.

Abstract:Self-assembly plays a fundamental role to determine thermodynamic properties of polymer systems, e.g., resulting in the formation of dynamically cross-linked networks with varied elasticity. However, the working principle of chemo-mechanical coupling between the self-assembly and elasticity of polymers is complex and has not been well understood. In this study, a non-Euclidean geometry model incorporating thermodynamics of microphase separation is proposed to understand the chemo-mechanical coupling in self-assembled triblock polymers. The thermodynamic separation of microphases, which is resulted from the self-assembly of polymeric molecules, is formulated using a non-Euclidean geometry equation, of which the geometrical parameters are applied to characterize the topologies of self-assembled and cross-linked networks. The non-Euclidean geometry model is further employed to describe chemo-mechanical coupling between the self-assembled network and dynamic elasticity of the triblock polymers, based on the rubber elasticity theory. Effectiveness of the proposed model is verified using both finite-element analysis and experimental results reported in literature. This study provides a new geometrical approach to understand the mechanochemistry and thermodynamics of self-assembled block polymers.

Abstract:Cross-linked liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) are smart materials for large light-activated variation or bend to transfer luminous energy into mechanical energy. We study the light-induced behavior of homeotropic nematic network polymer plates. The perturbation method is applied to find approximate solutions under uniform illumination and compared with finite element simulations. Moreover, situations of nonuniform laser illumination are investigated. Unlike single solution obtained from small displacement assumption, multiple solutions within Föppl–von Kármán nonlinear geometry framework are found in the post-buckling regime and the effect of various boundary conditions is discussed. The nonuniform bending moment generated by the inhomogeneous light-induced strain, membrane force and boundary effects lead to the unconventional nonsymmetric buckling behavior that is rarely observed under traditional mechanical or thermal loading.

Abstract:The photomechanical effect, which is characterized by light-induced mechanical deformation in materials, has gained significant attention for its potential applications across various domains. Photomechanical modeling, which involves the integration of photochemistry and mechanical behavior in photoactive materials, has emerged as a crucial tool for understanding and optimizing their functionality. In this review article, we present a comprehensive overview of recent developments in mechanical modeling and numerical simulations, with a specific focus on finite element simulations applied to organic photoactuators. Through a systematic literature search encompassing publications since the discovery of the photomechanical effect, we examined the progress made in modeling the photomechanical behavior of diverse organic photoactuators, including polymer-based, liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE), and composite photoactuators. The integration of light and mechanical constitutive models has enabled significant advancements in accurately representing the photomechanical responses of these materials. The key findings of this review encompass the methods and approaches employed for simulating light-induced deformation, factors influencing the photomechanical response, and current limitations and challenges in the field. In conclusion, the development of novel organic photoactuators necessitates the establishment of more generalized photomechanical couplings to optimize their design, enhance the light-induced response, and facilitate cost-effective commercialization. This review article aims to serve as an invaluable resource for researchers interested in this field, stimulating further investigations into the potential applications of organic photoactuators.

Abstract:Photochromic liquid crystal elastomer was recently reported to be able to deform largely and bend under illumination. In this paper, considering the opto-chemical process and the nematic–isotropic phase transition, we introduce the light and temperature into the constitutive relation of the liquid crystal elastomers, and propose a model for the light-induced bending. The dynamic deflection curve equation of the light-induced bending is derived based on the Hamilton principle. In the equation, the effect of light is introduced as an effective optical bending moment, which is caused by the inhomogeneous light-induced strain and Young's modulus. Several simulation examples are given to show the light-induced bending under different boundary conditions and various illumination or temperature controlling. Under the condition of deep nematic phase and weak enough illumination, the approximate analytical expression of the effective moment and the stress distribution can be obtained. Rich nonlinear behaviors are found in this model. The effective moment is a non-monotonic function of time, thickness ratio, and light intensity when the thickness ratio is not very large. The stress distribution through the thickness is nonlinear with two or three zero-stress planes.

Abstract:Polymer solutions and solids that contain light-sensitive molecules can undergo photo-contraction, whereby light energy is converted into mechanical energy. Here we show that a single film of a liquid-crystal network containing an azobenzene chromophore can be repeatedly and precisely bent along any chosen direction by using linearly polarized light. This striking photomechanical effect results from a photoselective volume contraction and may be useful in the development of high-speed actuators for microscale or nanoscale applications, for example in microrobots in medicine or optical microtweezers.

Abstract:In the field of material modeling, thermoplastic polymers are often studied because of their complex material behavior and their prevalence in industry applications due to their low cost and wide range of applications. Nowadays, where reusability becomes more and more important, materials which can undergo reversible thermomechanical deformations are appealing for, e.g., the construction of car body components. To predict such complex forming processes with multiple influencing factors, such as temperature, strain rate or underlying material morphology, model formulations are needed that account for these influences simultaneously and are validated against experimental data. Unfortunately, up to now only a few contributions are available which consider all these phenomena. In addition, the range of process parameters considered is often narrow due to the experimental effort required for testing. This usually results in limited predictive capabilities of the model. To overcome these limitations, in this work, a thermo-mechanically coupled material model is developed that accounts for the underlying morphology in terms of the degree of crystallinity (DOC). The model formulation is derived in a thermodynamically consistent manner, incorporating coupled nonlinear visco-elastic and elasto-plastic material behavior at finite strains. To characterize and further validate the model, mechanical as well as thermal experiments are conducted for polyamide 6 (PA6). Here, a blending strategy of PA6 together with an amorphous co-polymer is introduced during specimen production to achieve a wider range of stable DOCs(approximately 15%). The model formulation is successfully applied to experimental results and its predictions are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Abstract:Dynamic fracture of polymers plays a vital role in engineering applications. Dynamic fracture behaviors of polymethyl methacrylate were studied using the optical method of caustics. Semi-circular bending specimens were chosen for mixed-mode fracture and crack interaction analysis. The crack initiation, crack propagation, stress intensity factor, and fracture toughness were obtained by analyzing the specke patterns captured during dynamic loading by high-speed imaging techniques. The crack interactions of two symmetric and asymmetric cracks and the influence of damage, including the presence of holes and microcracks on or near the crack path, are discussed. The results show that two cracks on a specimen compete and interact with each other, and lead to the final fracture mode of the specimens. Holes and microcracks on or near the crack path influence the crack path and the crack propagation velocity. The results obtained in this paper could be extended to brittle fracture analysis of materials with multiple cracks or inclusions.

Abstract:Finite Element (FE) forming simulation offers the possibility of a detailed analysis of the deformation behavior of multilayered thermoplastic blanks during forming, considering material behavior and process conditions. Rate-dependent bending behavior is a material characteristic, which is so far not considered in FE forming simulation of pre-impregnated, continuously fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). Therefore, an approach for modeling viscoelastic bending behavior in FE composite forming simulation is presented in this work. The presented approach accounts for the distinct rate-dependent bending behavior of e.g. thermoplastic CFRPs at process conditions. The approach is based on a Voigt-Kelvin (VK) and a generalized Maxwell (GM) approach, implemented within a FE forming simulation framework implemented in several user-subroutines of the commercially available FE solver Abaqus. The VK, GM, as well as purely elastic bending modeling approaches are parameterized according to dynamic bending characterization results for a PA6-CF UD-tape. It is found that only the GM approach is capable to represent the bending deformation characteristic for all of the considered bending deformation rates. The parameterized bending modeling approaches are applied to a hemisphere test and to a generic geometry. A comparison of the forming simulation results of the generic geometry to experimental tests show a good agreement between simulation and experiments. Furthermore, the simulation results reveal that especially a correct modeling of the initial bending stiffness is relevant for the prediction of wrinkling behavior, as a similar onset of wrinkles is observed for the GM, the VK and an elastic approach, fitted to the stiffness observed in the dynamic rheometer test for low curvatures. Hence, characterization and modeling of rate-dependent bending behavior is crucial for FE forming simulation of thermoplastic CFRPs.

Abstract:The application of the new phenomenological model proposed and its superior fitting performance with respect to the most recent phenomenological models. A new phenomenological constitutive model is proposed for the prediction of the tensile and compressive behavior of semi‐crystalline and amorphous polymers. The new model modifies the phenomenological model previously proposed by Zhou and Mallick (ZM model) to correctly predict the complex behavior of thermoplastic materials including the linear viscoelastic deformation, the non‐linear viscoelastic deformation, the yielding, the post‐yield strain softening and the post‐yield strain hardening. A validation activity based on literature data has been carried out for polyether‐ether‐ketone (PEEK) and polycarbonate (PC) materials. The new model proved effective in fitting with high accuracy all the phases of the flow stress behavior for the considered materials, across a wide range of strain rates and temperature conditions. Finally, the comparison with Zhu et al., Duan et al., Nasraoui et al., Mulliken‐Boyce and Zhou‐Mallick models showed the better fitting performance of the proposed phenomenological model. Highlights Formulation of a new phenomenological model. Validation on mechanical test of semi‐crystalline and amorphous thermoplastics. Comparison with different phenomenological models present in the literature. Superior prediction results achieved compared to previously developed models.
