Abstract:In the present study, an image-based simulation has been developed in order to investigate the blood flow and temperature distribution in living tissues. The simulation system consists of blood flow modeling in large vessels, geometric modeling and mesh generation, and finite element analysis based on the transport theory in porous media. The blood flow dynamics in large vessels was modeled based on non-linear equations of pulsatile fluid flow. The blood flow perfused in solid tissues was described by Darcy transport model. In Regard to the heat transfer in the living tissues, it was expressed by the energy equation through porous media when the blood flow temperature and solid tissue temperature become equilibrium. In order to construct the real geometric model of the human finger, the sequential MR images of a volunteer were firstly taken. After appropriate image segmentation, a series of images with the boundary information of different tissues were thus obtained. Finally, the eight-node brick meshes were generated based on the information of meshes in every slice. The blood flow and capillary pressure distribution in the finger were simulated and it was found that the flow distribution in the tissue was similar to the anatomical. structure of microvessels. Moreover, the finger temperature distribution with and without blood perfusion were simulated. The computed results showed that when the solid tissues had the perfused blood, the variation profiles of the finger skin temperature from the fingertip to the basal part was in agreement with that in the thermographies.
