Abstract:In a magnetic resonance imaging system, the magnetic field homogeneity of the imaging area plays a decisive role on the image quality. The passive shimming technique uses ferromagnetic material to eliminate the field impurity in the imaging area. In existing passive shimming algorithms, the target magnetic field (TMF) was usually set as a fixed value, such as the DC component of the magnetic field, leading to a rigid constraint to the formed optimization model, and it may cause shimming inefficiency or even failure. In this paper, an optimal target magnetic field (OTMF) method was proposed, which set the TMF as an optimization variable built in a linear programming model. In the established optimization problem, no extra computational burden was involved. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the bare magnetic field of a 3.0-T superconducting magnet was shimmed. Compared with conventional linear programming methods, the proposed scheme could provide better shimming solution with higher field homogeneity and less consumption of ferromagnetic material.

Abstract:This paper presents a new passive shimming (PS) design scheme for the correction of static magnetic-field inhomogeneities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. In MRI, the PS procedure usually employs magnetic-field-based or harmonic-based methods to find an optimal iron-piece configuration to improve the uniformity of the static magnetic field in the imaging region. For the field-based PS technique, the peak-to-peak field inhomogeneity is minimized, and the harmonic components are inherently unconstrained; in the harmonic-based scheme, selected unwanted harmonics are minimized, and the overall field uniformity is consequently reduced. The field approach usually provides good field homogeneity but lacks flexibility in managing all terms of spherical harmonic field expansion; the harmonic approach is capable of controlling targeted low-order harmonic terms but can have difficulty in producing optimal overall field homogeneity and in controlling high-order harmonics. The new algorithm proposed herein attempts to combine the strengths of these two methods for a better PS solution. During the PS implementation, an explicit expression of the system matrix with both the field and harmonic sensitivities is generated, and then, an optimization procedure is performed for the determination of shim-piece thicknesses and locations. A case study presented shows that the hybrid method provides good quality, flexible solutions for controlling individual harmonic impurities, and also overall field uniformity. This method is not only applicable to conventional MRI magnets, but also, its flexibility means that it can be easily used to shim unconventional electromagnets.
A Novel Passive Shimming Method for the Correction of Magnetic Fields above the Patient Bed in MRI.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel passive shimming method for the effective correction of static magnetic field (B0) inhomogeneities in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. Passive shimming is used to find an optimum configuration for the placement of iron pieces applied to improve the B0 uniformity in the predefined imaging region referred to as the diameter of spherical volume (DSV). However, most passive shimming methods neglect to recognize that the space under the patient bed is not in use for imaging. In this work, we present a new algorithm that attempts to avoid the unnecessary shimming of the space under the patient bed. During implementation, the B0 field is still measured over the DSV surface and then mapped onto the effective imaging volume surface; a dedicated sensitivity matrix is generated only for the imaging area above the patient bed. A linear programming optimization procedure is performed for the determination of thicknesses and locations the shim pieces. Our experimental results showed that by revising the shimming target area, the new method provides superior optimization solutions. Compared to a conventional approach, the new method requires smaller amount of iron to correct the B0 inhomogeneities in the imaging area which has the effect of improving thermal stability to the B0 field. It also reduces the complexity of the optimization problem. Our new shimming strategy helps to improve the magnetic field homogeneity within the realistic imaging space, and ultimately improve image quality.

Abstract:In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the gradient coils are used to encode the spatial positions of protons by varying the magnetic field linearly across the imaging subject. With the latest development of MRI technique and new clinical and research applications, the gradient coil system requires increasingly innovative designs. In this paper, four unconventional gradient coil designs are reviewed: (1) local gradient coils; (2) new coil configurations with reduced peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS); (3) dedicated structures designed for hybrid systems (combining MRI with other medical devices); and (4) the full 3D coil designs. For the first type, the development of local gradient coils (mainly head coils) is discussed chronologically and divided into three stages: the "golden" stage in the 1990s, the "wane" stage in the 2000s, and the "revival" stage in the 2010s. For the second type, various designs for the reduction of PNS problems have been described, including local and whole-body gradient coil systems. For the third design, a dedicated gradient coil design for multi-modality combination is illustrated with an MRI-LINAC system. Finally, gradient systems with non-layered coil structure are described in the fourth design type. We hope that this review on unconventional gradient coil designs will be useful for the new development of MRI technology and emerging medical applications.
A Finite-Difference Method for the Design of Biplanar Transverse Gradient Coil in MRI

Abstract:This paper presents a finite difference method for the design of gradient coil in MRI. In this method, a linear matrix equation is formulated using a finite-difference approximation of the current density in the source domain and an optimization procedure is then carried out to solve the resulting inverse problem and the coil winding pattern are found. The developed algorithm is tested with a transverse biplanar gradient coil design example. Compared with conventional design methods such as target-field, standard stream function or boundary element schemes, the new design approach is relatively easy to implement and flexible to manage the local winding pattern for 2D or 3D geometries.

Abstract:In permanent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, pulsed gradient fields induce strong eddy currents in the conducting structures of the magnet. The gradient field for image encoding is perturbed by these eddy currents, thus leading to MR image distortions. The conventional approach for the reduction of the eddy current effects is to employ passive shielding (an eddy current board). However, the analysis of the passive shielding structure is typically nonoptimal. In this article, a comprehensive 3D finite element method (FEM) model for the characterization of eddy currents in the ferromagnetic materials of the magnet is developed, which is helpful for the evaluation of the shielding effects and the improvement of passive shielding designs. During the numerical analyses, the eddy current source was introduced through X-gradient coils, nonlinearity, and the anisotropy of the laminated silicon steel structure was considered, with the selection of a penalty factor in the FEM governing equations being also detailed. Abstract:Objective: To develop a rapid and automated shimming method in permanent magnet MRI system.Methods: The inhomogeneity distribution of main magnet field B0 was achieved on two sets of image datas obtained by special imaging pulse sequence after the problem of phase rewind had been solved.The shimming current required to improve the field homogeneity was calculated and then loaded to the MR imaging system.The contrast experiment with and without the shimming current had been conducted on 0.36T permanent MRI system.Results:(1)The homogeneity of field in the view(FOV) was improved significantly.(2) MR signal and image quality were improved significantly.Conclusions: The shimming technology can adequately satisfy the clinical application.

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) plays an important role in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. The homogeneity of the magnetic field is very significant for NMR experiment. Based on the principle of field mapping, gradient shimming is an efficient method to achieve a homogeneous magnetic field. Reflecting accurately the spatial magnetic field distribution produced by every shim coil, gradient shimming can optimize the homogeneity efficiently and quickly. In this paper, one-dimensional gradient shimming method was studied, and the corresponding computational process was improved. Experiments were done on the NMR spectrometer, and the results show that the improved algorithm operates more efficiently and still works in a great inhomogeneous magnetic field.

Abstract:High magnetic field homogeneity is critical for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) applications. B0 inhomogeneity during MR scans is a long-standing problem resulting from magnet imperfections and site conditions, with the main issue being the inhomogeneity across the human body caused by differences in magnetic susceptibilities between tissues, resulting in signal loss, image distortion, and poor spectral resolution. Through a combination of passive and active shim techniques, as well as technological advances employing multi-coil techniques, optimal coil design, motion tracking, and real-time modifications, improved field homogeneity and image quality have been achieved in MRI/MRS. The integration of RF and shim coils brings a high shim efficiency due to the proximity of participants. This technique will potentially be applied to high-density RF coils with a high-density shim array for improved B0 homogeneity. Simultaneous shimming and image encoding can be achieved using multi-coil array, which also enables the development of novel encoding methods using advanced magnetic field control. Field monitoring enables the capture and real-time compensation for dynamic field perturbance beyond the static background inhomogeneity. These advancements have the potential to better use the scanner performance to enhance diagnostic capabilities and broaden applications of MRI/MRS in a variety of clinical and research settings. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the latest advances in B0 magnetic field shimming and magnetic field control techniques as well as MR hardware, and to emphasize their significance and potential impact on improving the data quality of MRI/MRS.

Abstract:Shimming is an essential process for most NMR experiments, and time saving in this process is desired. Here we propose a fast 3D gradient shimming with a low resolution of only 2×2 pixels in the XY plane, and the number of pixels in the Z direction remains unchanged. The proposed pulse sequences employ the selective excitation and the convection compensation. Consequently, the fast 3D gradient shimming adapts to a wide range of samples on regular NMR spectrometers.

Abstract:Purpose In an MRI system, the static magnetic field homogeneity is strictly required especially in ultrahigh field situations. However, owing to the engineering tolerances and system errors, the magnetic field homogeneity of a magnet usually cannot meet the imaging requirement; thus, a shimming operation is always needed. Methods Existing passive shimming methods commonly minimize the peak-peak variations of the magnetic fields over the diameter of spherical volume (DSV), targeting the field quality of 10-20 parts per million (ppm). However, these conventional passive shimming methods can sometimes lead to sub-optimal field quality and iron consumption solutions. Notably, the RMS error (RMSE) value of the field uniformity is inherently unoptimized. This work proposed a novel passive shimming method that can deliver a significantly improved shimming solution by actively controlling the central magnetic field and specific magnetic field deviations in the region of interest. A detailed comparison between the conventional and proposed methods was conducted on a 9.4T human MRI superconducting magnet. Results The results showed that the new solution had a significant advantage in searching for superior magnetic field homogeneity with less iron piece consumption. Significantly, the RMSE value of the magnetic field over the DSV can be substantially reduced >10 times. The proposed algorithms are also very efficient, taking only several seconds to find the shimming solution. Conclusion The potential of the magnetic field homogeneity improvement methods will promote the development of high-end MRI systems.
A SQP Optimization Method for Shimming a Permanent MRI Magnet

Abstract:Based on the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method, a new approach is presented in this paper to gain a uniform magnetic field for a permanent MRI magnet with biplanar poles. First, the adopted shimming piece is modeled as a magnetic dipole moment to calculate its effect on the background field over the imaging region of interest. Then, the SQP method is utilized to determine the ideal solution for the shimming equation. Finally, the ideal solution is discrete, and the quantization error control technique is used for special cases. This new method helps to reduce the inhomogeneity from 1234.5ppm to 21.4ppm over a 36cm diameter spherical volume (DSV), within hours in practical shimming work.

Abstract:A new method for allowing a permanent magnet for MR imaging to meet its stringent field homogeneity requirements has been developed. The method is called passive shimming and uses the permanent magnetic pieces instead of the ferromagnetic material in the magnet bore at locations of the hardware. Software and hardware have facilitated this shimming procedure with high efficiency and stabilization. The method can be considered as a function approximation. In this paper, the function of a magnetic dipole is presented as a basis function. From the functional space that consists of simple functions of a series of magnetic dipoles, the specific function that approximates the negative quantity of the error function in the homogeneous magnetic field with the desired accuracy can be found. The series of magnetic dipoles are realized by the permanent magnetic pieces located in the hardware. The result shows that this method is fixable and normative over the traditional method.

Abstract:Passive shimming technology can make the uniformity of the diameter of spherical volume (DSV) region of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system meet the imaging requirements. In this article, we introduce the dichotomy method to improve the optimal target magnetic field (OTMF) algorithm, so that it can quickly get the minimum shimming sheet laying scheme under the lowest magnetic field inhomogeneity and greatly reduce the iteration time. Based on the improved OTMF algorithm by dichotomy, this article continues to study the influence of the number of shimming trays, the number of pockets in each shimming tray, the size of the shimming pieces, and the spacing between the shimming pieces on the shimming effect through the DOE test design method and the Monte Carlo simulation test method. This article gives the best shimming design scheme for a 1.5-T MRI superconducting magnet, and this scheme has been proven to reduce the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field at 20 cm DSV from 1199.2373 to 0.57 ppm. The shimming design method introduced in this article has certain guiding significance in exploring the factors affecting the passive shimming effect and shimming design.

Abstract:Ultra High Field (UHF) MRI requires improved gradient and shim performance to fully realize the promised gains (SNR as well as spatial, spectral, diffusion resolution) that higher main magnetic fields offer. Both the more challenging UHF environment by itself, as well as the higher currents used in high performance coils, require a deeper understanding combined with sophisticated engineering modeling and construction, to optimize gradient and shim hardware for safe operation and for highest image quality. This review summarizes the basics of gradient and shim technologies, and outlines a number of UHF-related challenges and solutions. In particular, Lorentz forces, vibroacoustics, eddy currents, and peripheral nerve stimulation are discussed. Several promising UHF-relevant gradient concepts are described, including insertable gradient coils aimed at higher performance neuroimaging.

Abstract:Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a radiation-free vessel- and target-imaging modality that can sensitively detect nanoparticles. A static magnetic gradient field, referred to as a selection field, is required in MPI to provide a field-free region (FFR) for spatial encoding. The image resolution of MPI is closely related to the size of the FFR, which is determined by the selection field gradient amplitude. Because of the limitations of existing gradient coil hardware, the image resolution of MPI cannot satisfy the clinical requirements of human in vivo imaging. Pulsed excitation has been confirmed to improve the image resolution of MPI by breaking down the 'relaxation wall.' This work proposes the use of a pulsed waveform magnetic gradient from magnetic resonance imaging to further improve the image resolution of MPI. Through alignment of the gradient direction along the field-free line (FFL), each location on the FFL is able to have a unique excitation field strength that generates a specific relaxation-induced decay signal. Through excitation of nanoparticles on the FFL with many gradient profiles, a high-resolution, one-dimensional (1D) image can be reconstructed on the FFL. For larger magnetic nanoparticles, simulation results revealed that a pulsed excitation field with a greater flat portion generates a 1D bar pattern phantom image with a higher correlation and spatial resolution. With parallel FFL and gradient coil movements, high-resolution, two-dimensional (2D) Shepp–Logan phantom and brain vessel maps were reconstructed through repetition of the spatially resolved measurement of magnetic nanoparticles on the FFL.

Abstract:In an ultralow-field magnetic resonance imaging (ULF-MRI) system, the uniformity of static magnetic field is essential for maintaining good imaging quality. However, achieving high homogeneity is difficult due to the low magnitude. This article proposes a flexible active shimming approach for ULF optimization, where an original geometry-based method is presented for first- and second-order shim coil designs. Different types of shim coils are approximated by combinatorial geometric curves, where no additional wire is needed for overall connection. An optimization problem is established to ensure that each shim coil generates a high-purity harmonic magnetic field, which is comparable to the optimization results obtained using the conventional stream function method. A computer-controlled multichannel current source is designed to drive the second-order shim coils, where the current output reaches an accuracy of 1 mA. The performance of optimized coils is verified by imaging experiments. It is demonstrated that homogeneity is improved from 157 to 111 ppm following the implementation of second-order shimming. The in vivo experiment shows that imaging quality is improved after shimming with the local signal-to-noise ratio increasing 1.16–1.92 folds.

Abstract:Obtaining high quality images of the spinal cord with MRI is difficult, partly due to the fact that the spinal cord is surrounded by a number of structures that have differing magnetic susceptibility. This causes inhomogeneities in the magnetic field, which in turn lead to image artifacts. In order to address this issue, linear compensation gradients can be employed. The latter can be generated using an MRI scanner's first order gradient coils and adjusted on a per-slice basis, in order to correct for through-plane ("z") magnetic field gradients. This approach is referred to as z-shimming. The aim of this study is two-fold. The first aim was to replicate aspects of a previous study wherein z-shimming was found to improve image quality in T2*-weighted echo-planar imaging. Our second aim was to improve upon the z-shimming approach by including in-plane compensation gradients and adjusting the compensation gradients during the image acquisition process so that they take into account respiration-induced magnetic field variations. We refer to this novel approach as realtime dynamic shimming. Measurements performed in a group of 12 healthy volunteers at 3 T show improved signal homogeneity along the spinal cord when using z-shimming. Signal homogeneity may be further improved by including realtime compensation for respiration-induced field gradients and by also doing this for gradients along the in-plane axes.
