Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) with multicast overlay. By superimposing an inverse return-to-zero multicast signal onto a nonreturn-to-zero point-to-point signal, simultaneous transmission is realized for both services. At the optical network unit (ONU), only one photodiode is required to detect both signals. No complex receiver is demanded. Multicast control is realized through a switch for each wavelength at the optical line terminal. We successfully demonstrate the proposed WDM-PON.

Abstract:We propose a novel wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) to simultaneously transmit unicast data and multicast services with upstream data re-modulation in optical network units (ONUs). For each wavelength channel in the optical line terminal (OLT), the downstream unicast data are applied to one arm of a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) to generate baseband unicast non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal. A radio frequency (RF) control signal is applied to the other arm to present two un-modulated sidebands for multicast data modulation in a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) format. The flexible and dynamic multicast services are realized by simply switching the RF control signal on or off. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with 1.25-Gb/s downstream unicast, multicast, and upstream data.

Abstract:In this proposed multicast scheme,orthogonal modulation of ASK/DPSK is used to overlay the unicast and multicast services.Wavelength Selective Switch is used to distinguish the multicast-enabled ONUs and multicast-disabled ONUs by different wavelengths,so the multicast service is realized.The control scheme is convenient and centralized at OLT,simplifying the whole system.

Abstract:We propose a novel multicast-enable wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) passive-optical-network (PON) architecture that uses two sidebands of Optical Carrier Suppressed (OCS)-DPSK signal to carry the unicast and multicast data. The multicast wavelength control is realized through a Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS). At the optical line terminal (OLT), for each WDM channel, a single drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is used to generate a subcarrier double-sideband (DSB) DPSK signal. Then, the lower-sideband signals are separated by an interleaver and subsequently modulated to deliver the multicast data, while the remaining upper-sideband DPSK signals carry the downstream unicast data. In the optical network units (ONUs), part of the downstream unicast signal power is re-modulated for upstream transmission, which enables color-free ONUs. This proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with a 1.25Gb/s downstream unicast and multicast data.

Abstract:We propose a delay-based multicast overlay scheme to superimpose a multicast differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulated signal on a point-to-point downstream inverse-return-to-zero (IRZ) modulated signal in a wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON). By adjusting the synchronization of the DPSK and the IRZ modulation on the downstream carrier, simple and flexible multicast control could be realized. We have successfully demonstrated the proposed scheme for three different traffics, namely 10-Gb/s IRZ downstream point-to-point data, 10-Gb/s DPSK downstream multicast data, and 10-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) upstream re-modulated data, respectively. An error floor of 10(-4) is observed for the multicast data when it is disabled. The effect of timing misalignment on the downstream DPSK/IRZ orthogonal modulation and the upstream re-modulation is analyzed. We also study the case when the data rates of the multicast and downstream point-to-point data are different.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel conjugate-driven frequency shift keying (FSK) modulated wavelength division multiplexing passive network (WDM-PON) with variable-rate multicast services. Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is adopted for multicast overlay services with different rate requirements. A differential detection is used for the demodulation of FSK signal, which can eliminate the crosstalk from the OFDM signal. A total 40-Gb/s FSK point to point (P2P) signal and 6.3-Gb/s OFDM overlay with three kinds of variable-rate multicast services are experimentally demonstrated. A physical-layer adaptive identification is proposed for the variable-rate multicast services. After 25 km single mode fiber (SMF) transmission, the power penalties of FSK P2P signal and OFDM multicast overlay are 1.3 dB and 1.7 dB respectively.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.

Abstract:A novel WDM-PON scheme based on polarization division multiplexing is proposed to support simultaneous delivery of point-to-point (P2P) data and multicast data. The polarization divided two light carriers from the same light source are used for transmission of P2P signal and multicast signal, separately. And the specific structure for combination of wavelength and polarization division multiplexing is presented to support selective multicast for each individual wavelength channel at lower cost. The multicast signal can be switched on or off by adjusting the polarization state of the light. This scheme is experimentally demonstrated and investigated with a combination of 10-Gb/s downstream P2P and 10-Gb/s multicast signal transmission.
