Abstract:The small hyperspectral imager Compact High-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) is an important sensor for Earth observation included in the payload of the European Space Agency Third-Part Mission Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA)-1 satellite. The sensor acquires hyperspectral, high spatial resolution and multi-angle images, which provide great opportunities for more accurate land cover classification than ever. This paper evaluated multiangle CHRIS data for land cover classification. Firstly, it analyzed the multi-angle spectral features of land cover types from CHRIS mode-5 images over an agricultural area. It was found that different land cover types show different multi-angle spectral features, which means that multi-angle images may provide more powerful discriminative capability of land cover types. The land cover classifications were performed on multi-angle CHRIS images separately and combined, using the Support Vector Machines (SVM) method, a recently developed statistical learning method. The results showed that images acquired with different angles achieved different classification accuracies. Moreover, the classification using images acquired with different angles combined produced higher overall accuracy, compared to the classification results with single-angle image alone.
