Abstract:Detailed characteristics of solid residue samples, such as bottom ash, grate siftings and fly ash, which collected from two large-scale MSW (municipal solid waste) incinerators, were carried out in terms of chemical composition, contents and leachability of heavy metals. Indicated: those more volatile heavy metals, such as Cd, Pb, Hg and As which with low boiling temperature mainly remained in the fly ash. In addition, the concentration of Pb and Cd in the leachates of the fly ashes was much higher than the standard. Accordingly, the fly ash could be confirmed as hazardous waste and should be safety treated before landfill and disposal in order to meet the environmental demands. Moreover, the less volatile heavy meatals with high boiling temperature, such as Ni, remained in the bottom ashes and grate siftings, while those moderate volatile heavy metals as Zn, Cu and Cr distributed equably in fly ashes, bottom ashes and grate siftings. Moreover, the following order of leachability degree of the heavy metals was observed: Cr, As, Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn.
