Abstract:Addition of oxygenates to diesel fuel is commonly recognized as one of most promising methods to acquire significant reduction in diesel engine exhaust emissions. Extensive studies have been made to research suitable oxygenates. In a previous investigation, propylene glycol mono-methyl ether (PGMME) was proposed as an oxygenated diesel engine fuel. PGMME has a low CN and thus can not be directly added to diesel fuel. To enhance the CN of PGMME, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether(EGDME) was employed as its CN improver and thus a new oxygenate blend of PGMME and EGDME with CN of 50 was prepared and their mixing ratio is 1.6: 1 by volume. In the previous study, mainly investigated were the engine-out missions reduction abilities of the oxygenate blend used as diesel fuel additive and combustion characteristics at two engine operation modes were involved. Further researches were later carried out under more engine running conditions. The results are as follows: when fueled with the oxygenate blend engine in-cylinder peak pressure and ignition delay generally do not alter. Heat release rate falls down in the premixing combustion whereas increases during diffusion combustion. Heat release rate decreases about 15% to 19% when fueled with 25%(v) of the oxygenate blend. Thermal efficiency generally can be enhanced slightly.
