Abstract:Hollow Fe70Co30 nanospheres have been prepared in aqueous solution with KBH4 as the reducing agent and sodium dodecyl sulfonate ( SDS) as the stabilizing agent. The diameter of these spheres is about 100 - 200 nm and the shell thickness is about 15 - 20 nm. By transmission electron microscopy ( TEM) analysis, it was found that these hollow spheres formed via an in situ galvanic replacement reaction between iron nanoparticles and the cobalt cation. These hollow Fe70Co30 spheres exhibit surface plasmon resonance ( SPR) absorption in the ultraviolet - visible spectrum. The magnetic properties of the as- prepared hollow Fe70Co30 nanospheres and of a sample annealed at 573 K were studied. Annealing the product can greatly enhance the saturation magnetization Ms and coercivity H-c.

Abstract:Magnetite Fe3O4 nanocrystal clusters (50–60nm in diameter) with good dispersibility in aqueous medium were prepared by modified co-precipitation method in the presence of surfactants including sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), trisodium citrate dehydrate (TSCD), and polyacrylic acid sodium salt (PAASS). The influence of surfactant on the formation of Fe3O4 nanocrystal clusters was studied. It was found that Fe3O4 nanocrystal clusters exhibited almost a super-paramagnetic behavior with very small coercivity and a high magnetization (Ms=44–56emug−1). Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanocrystal clusters–polyaniline (PANI) composites were further synthesized via a self-assembly process in the presence of Fe3O4 nanoclusters containing SDS as the dopant. It was also noted that the morphology, the magnetic, and the electrical properties of Fe3O4–PANI composites could be adjusted by altering the contents of Fe3O4 and SDS.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated Fe nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by a two-step procedure method of hydrothermal and subsequent thermal reduction process. The introduction of hydrogen atmosphere helps to obtain pure α-Fe phase and the lower annealing temperature (at 550°C). The morphological characterization indicates that the nanoparticle presents a quasi-spherical shaped, core–shell structure with diameter ranged from 10 to 20nm and a carbon shell of about 4nm. The results of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum demonstrate that carbon in the as-synthesized product is in amorphous phase. Magnetic measurements reveal the ferromagnetic behavior of the product.

Abstract:This work reports a hard self-template method to synthesize core/shell like Fe3O4@C microparticles, in which the Pd nanocrystals can be alternatively incorporated into the carbon shells. The Fe3O4@polyaniline core/shell microspheres were first synthesized as the precursor by in situ polymerization of aniline onto the surface of the Fe3O4 microspheres. In a subsequent carbonization of the precursor under a vacuum oven, the Fe3O4 core was preserved and the polyaniline shell transferred into carbon shells enveloping the magnetic sphere, forming magnetic Fe3O4@C microspheres. The Pd ions could be impregnated into the polyaniline shell, and thus the obtained composites were transformed into Fe3O4@C/Pd microspheres under the same vacuum heating progress. The as-obtained system demonstrates superparamagnetic characteristics, which would benefit its potential application in nanocatalysts. This strategy provides an efficient approach for tailoring core/shell materials with desired functionalities and structures by adjusting the precursors and structure-directing agents.

Abstract:A general synthetic method has been developed to fabricate and assemble ferromagnetic transition metal nanofibers. By employing the novel electrospinning technique followed by subsequent heat treatment, we have successfully prepared uniform nanofibers of Fe, Co, and Ni with diameters of similar to 25 nm and lengths longer than 100 mu m. Using a specially designed fiber collector, we can conveniently assemble magnetic nanofibers into aligned arrays. The electrospun magnetic metal nanofibers have unique magnetic properties, with much enhanced coercivities relative to bulk materials. The outstanding features of this approach to get one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of assembly. Therefore, electrospun magnetic nanofibers can potentially be used in fabrication of high-density magnetic recording, magnetic sensors, flexible magnets, and spintronic devices.

Abstract:In this work, a successful synthesis of magnetic cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles is presented. The synthesized CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have a spherical shape and highly monodisperse in the selected solvent. The effect of different reaction conditions such as temperature, reaction time and varying capping agents on the phase and morphology is studied. Scanning transmission electron microscopy showed that the size of these nanoparticles can be controlled by varying reaction conditions. Both X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy corroborate the formation of CoFe2O4 spinel structure with cubic symmetry. Due to optimized reaction parameters, each nanoparticle was shown to be a single magnetic domain with diameter ranges from 6 to 16 nm. Finally, the magnetic investigations showed that the obtained nanoparticles are superparamagnetic with a small coercivity value of about 315 Oe and a saturation magnetization of 58 emu/g at room temperature. These results make the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles promising for advanced magnetic nanodevices and biomagnetic applications.

Abstract:Highly stable Fe–Ni alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes have been synthesized by in situ catalytic decomposition of benzene over Fe–Ni alloy nanoparticles generated through procedures of sol–gel fabrication and hydrogen reduction. The phases of graphite and γ-FeNi solid solution (face centered cubic) were identified by X-ray diffraction. The results of FE-SEM and HRTEM characterization revealed that Fe–Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes are generated in large quantity. The composites are highly stable in air and show soft magnetic property, with saturation magnetization affected by the composition of Fe–Ni alloy and the temperature of benzene decomposition.

Abstract:The graphite encapsulation of metal alloy magnetic nanoparticles has attracted attention for biological applications because of the high magnetization of the encapsulated particles. However, most of the synthetic methods have limitations in terms of scalability and economics because of the demanding synthetic conditions and low yields. Here, we show that well controlled graphite-encapsulated FeCo core-shell nanoparticles can be synthesized by a hydrothermal method, simply by mixing Fe/Co with sucrose as a carbon source. Various Fe/Co metal ratios were used to determine the compositional dependence of the saturation magnetization and relaxivity coefficient. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that the particle sizes were 7 nm. In order to test the capability of graphite-encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents, these nanoparticles were solubilized in water by the nonspecific physical adsorption of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate.

Abstract:The magnetic interactions between neighboring magnetic nanoparticles make the synthesis of nanocomposites made of two kinds of magnetic nanoparticles extremely difficult. In this paper, to achieve an effective nanocomposite of Co and Fe3O4 nanoparticles, a special urchin-like Co nanomatrix was used to prepare the Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles are evenly embedded into the branches of the CO clusters, bringing the two types of particles into close contact and ensuring the optimal magnetic and microwave properties. The electromagnetic (EM) parameters at 1–18 GHz and the magnetic loss tangents can be effectively modulated, and the absorption frequency bands of the EM waves are shifted to the X-Ku bands (8–18 GHz) from the S-C bands (2–8 GHz) after the Fe3O4 nanoparticles are compounded.

Abstract:We have synthesized the bulk form of the superparamagnetic nanocomposites of Fe nanoparticles and activated carbon. Here highly porous feature of activated carbon and magnetic properties of Fe nanoparticles were combined together to form the nanocomposites by mechanical mixing of different proportion of both of them. These nanocomposites are characterized by various characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), magnetization measurement and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. The observed XRD patterns have shown most intense peaks at 2{\theta} = 44.8 degree, which correspond to the (110) plane of the pure Fe in body centered cubic phase. Average particles sizes obtained by TEM imaging are in the range of 20 nm, which are below the required limit for Fe nanoparticles to be in superparamagnetic phase. The superparamagnetic nature of the nanocomposites together with trace amount of the ferromagnetic phase was confirmed by magnetization measurements and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. Particles size calculated by the Langavin function fitting of the magnetization vs magnetic field curves are in qualitatively good agreement with the size obtained from TEM imaging.

Abstract:Nanocubes and hollow cubic microcages of FeCo alloy have been synthesized in large scale by reduction of aqueous Fe2+ and Co2+ with hydrazine in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and cyclohexane at a relative low temperature, which were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The morphology and dimensions of FeCo alloy nanocrystals could be controlled by the reaction conditions such as the concentrations of cyclohexane and PEG-400, reaction time, and the molar ratio of Fe2+ to Co2+ in the solution. The concentration of iron in these particles could be varied between 17% and 56%. The highest magnetization of 211.9 emu/g was recorded for 68 +/- 6 nm Fe50Co50 nanocubes. The work demonstrates that are promising for single nanoparticle recording and for high performance exchange-spring nanocomposite magnetic applications.

Abstract:CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposite nanofibers (NFs) with superior magnetic performance have been fabricated using electrospinning technique combined with hydrogen-thermal reduction reaction. A detailed study on the evolution of structural, morphological and magnetic properties with reduction temperature is undertaken. It is found that these composite NFs exhibit a good single-phase magnetic behavior, indicating that the magnetically hard CoFe2O4 and soft CoFe2 phases in them are sufficiently exchange coupled. The composition dependence of magnetic properties of CoFe2O4/CoFe2 composite NFs is obviously different from the reported nanopowder and microfiber counterparts. Furthermore, a higher remanence and maximum energy product can be achieved for CoFe2O4/CoFe2 composite NFs. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:By controlling the pyrolysis temperature, core/shell materials with Fe3O4 encapsulated in carbon nanocages (Fe3O4@CNCs) and Fe encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (Fe@CNTs) were synthesized selectively from acetylene using Fe2O3 nanoparticles as catalyst in chemical vapor deposition. Scanning electron microscopic study showed that the efficiency of generating Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs was high, exceeding 95%. Transmission electron microscopic study confirmed the high selectivity to Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs, with the former having morphology similar to that of the catalyst particles. With Fe3O4 and Fe nanoparticles tightly wrapped in graphitic layers, the obtained Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs materials show high stability and good magnetic properties.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropic nanocomposites have attracted tremendous interests, due to their unexpected properties originating from the interactions of the interfaces except for the intrinsic features. In this work, we develop a facile solution chemistry synthesis method to prepare the one-dimensional (1D) Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures with hard magnetic property. Interestingly, the Fe precursor firstly decompose and nucleate individually, and then grow on the surface of the hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) Co nanorods (NRs) upon prolonging heating time at higher temperature, which is different from the general seed-mediated growth model. The distribution density of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of the Co NRs can be varied with the addition of Fe source, modulating the values of coercivity and saturation magnetization for the Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures. The as-synthesizedCo-Fe3O4 heterostructures maintain the hard magnetic properties with a coercivity value more than 2.5 kOe as well as a saturation magnetization value up to 128.3 emu g−1, indicating the preservation of the anisotropy of the hcp Co NRs.

Abstract:A new method to coat Fe nanoparticles with carbon by pyrolysis of acetylene is reported. The Fe nanoparticles were beforehand coated with silica layers by sol–gel combined hydrogen method. The antioxidation capability of Fe/SiO2 composites has enhanced greatly after coated with amorphous carbon shells. By the introduction of only 7.5wt.% nonmagnetic silica and carbon, these composites have relatively high specific magnetization of 200.27emu/g. The insulating amorphous silica and carbon shells prove effective to reduce the eddy current at high frequency.

Abstract:A novel soft magnetic nanocomposite with FeCo particles encapsulated by amorphous SiO2 was synthesized using a co-precipitation combined H, reduction method. The saturation magnetization of the (Fe70Co30)(90)/(SiO2)(10) nanocomposite is as high as 200 emu/g, which is 4-5 times larger than that of traditional spinet ferrites. The frequency dependence of the complex initial permeability is intensely dependent upon the content of SiO2 insulating phase. With increasing the content of SiO2 to 10 wt.%, the cut-off frequency is drastically increased to over 1 GHz. The results show that a new high-frequency soft magnetic material with high saturation magnetization (A,) can be achieved by introducing FeCo/SiO2 nanocomposite. Abstract:Superparamagnetic Fe3O(4)@polyaniline core/shell microspheres with well-defined blackberry-like morphology have been synthesized via a simple in situ surface polymerization method. The thickness of the polyaniline (PANI) shell can be selectively obtained by tuning the reaction time and monomer concentration. The poly(vinylpyrroldine) (PVP) plays an important role in the coating process. The present method can be extendable to fabricate other magnetic/conductive core/shell composites, and these unique core/shell spherical materials could find applications in catalyst supports or biomedical areas.

Abstract:Hybrid nanospheres with controllable magnetite content and narrow size distribution, composed of Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in a crosslinked polystyrene matrix, were synthesized by magneto-template (Fe3O4 minidroplets) miniemulsion polymerization. In this process, a magnetic fluid (ferrofluid), consisting of Fe3O4 nanoparticles dispersed in octane, was directly emulsified in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate under ultrasonication. The formation of Fe3O4 minidroplets served as a template (magneto-template) for the subsequent miniemulsion polymerization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed uniform hybrid nanospheres in which the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were evenly dispersed. The average size of these magnetic hybrid nanospheres can be rationally adjusted from 70nm to 130nm by varying the amount of surfactant. The magnetite content can be controlled over a wide range, from 40wt % to 70wt %, by modulating the dosage of the ferrofluid. Real-time monitoring of the size of the Fe3O4 minidroplets after addition of monomers indicated gradual incorporation of monomers into the magneto-template prior to polymerization. The use of divinyl benzene with styrene to crosslink the polymer matrix was used for enhancing the integrity of the hybrid nanospheres. These magnetic hybrid nanospheres are superparamagnetic, and thus are ideal candidates for biomedical applications after suitable surface modification.

Abstract:Fe65Co35 magnetic nano-particles were synthesized via co-precipitation process.The effects of co-precipitation and annealing parameters on the microstructure and magnetic properties were investigated.It was found that,when co-precipitation oil bathing at temperature of 100℃ and annealing at temperature of 300℃,the fine nanoparticles with uniform size distribution and optimal magnetic properties can be produced.Both lower and higher oil bath temperatures have negative influences on the morphology and magnetic properties of the product.The particle size increases with increasing annealing temperature,but when the annealing temperature reaches above 500℃,the particles tend to heavily aggregate.The Fe65Co35 nanoparticles with particle size of less than 50nm,Ms of higher than 180 A·m2/kg have been successfully obtained for optimal processing conditions.
