Abstract:The exlposive eletrical characteristics of eletric exploding copper wire is discussed.Through the analysis of metal wire electrical explosion process,we understand that the wire eletrical explosion is divided into fixed additive heat and phase change heat,the lines of current density for the wire eletrical explosion is inversely proportional to time,the current pause time is proportional to the length of the wire.In this theory,the LTspice circuit simulaiton of wire eletrical explosion is completed.Based on the simulation data,constructing test system,in 15kV,1kA conditions,we do the electrical explosion test to the 0.05mm diameter constantan wire.Synchronously acquire the voltage current waveform,and the power characteristics and impedance characteristics are analyzed.The test results show that: wire electrical explosion is divided into phase transition,pause,plasma discharge this three stages,the peak current generated by the explosion wire is inversely proportional to length of the explosion wire.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Electrical explosion of single wire is the initial stage of wire array z-pinches. In order to study the physical process of single wire explosion, a small-scale pulsed power generator was established, which can provide positive and negative polarity current with the peak value of 3kA and the rise-time from 20ns to hundreds of nanoseconds. The single wire loads are bare and insulation coated tungsten wires with a dozen microns in diameter. The electrical behavior (i.e. the voltage and current waveforms) of the wire explosion was measured by a capacitive divider and a Rogowski coil, respectively. The evolution images of wire explosion were photographed with laser shadowgraph, interferometry and schlieren. A large number of experiments of wire explosion have been carried out on the small pulsed power generator. The results show that for the bare tungsten wire, due to the earlier flashover breakdown along the wire surface, the energy deposited into the wire is less than the energy needed for vaporizing the whole wire, which always results in a heterogeneous structure of exploding wire, i.e. high-density wire core surrounded by low-density coronal plasma. While for the insulation coated tungsten wires, the flashover can be delayed and thus the deposited energy can be close to or greater than the vaporization energy, which leads to a higher wire expansion ratio, and wire core free explosion (i.e. wire material totally vaporized) can be achieved before flashover occurs with suitable current waveforms.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Exploding wire is performed by rapidly heating the wire to vaporization temperature with a high current pulse flowing through the wire. Exploding wires have found many applications among which are the opening switches named fuses in the circuits for inductive energy storage, the discharge loads of X-pinch or Z-pinches, namely wire array Z-pinches, and the production of nanopowders. The behavior of exploding wires for nanopowder production was studied by experiments and numerical simulation. In experiments, the evolution of the exploding wire was recorded by taking time- resolved pictures of the explosion with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. From the interferograms the electron density and the expansion speed of the metallic vapor from the exploding wire can be deduced. The shock wave in front of the expanding wire could be visualized. In numerical simulation, the electrical behavior of exploding wires was obtained by solving nonlinear differential equation describing the discharge circuit. For the metal wires of high conductivity and low sublimation heat, such as Copper, Aluminum, Gold and Silver, the circuit simulation could be well conducted based on the resistivity model developed by Tucker1 in which the resisitivity was expressed with the explicit functions of specific action, i.e., p = f(g) . For the metals such as Titanium and Zinc of their resistivity anomalously changing, i.e., decreasing rather than increasing, with the liquid heating, the circuit simulation of the exploding wires could be performed using the implicit relationship between p and g that is read out point by point from the experimentally measured curve. Abstract:Pulsed wire discharge in embedded-gas is a simple and efficient method for producing nanosize powder of metal, alloy, or metal compound. The powder size and size distribution are strongly related to the deposition energy into the wire load by joule heating. This paper established a numerical model to analyze and predict the behavior of electrical circuits containing pulsed current source and exploding wire load. In the model, the entire process of wire explosion is subdivided into five stages: solid heating, melting, liquid heating, evaporation, and plasma growth. Voltage waveform, current waveform and deposition energy on the wire can be numerically simulated by the model. Based on a number of simulations, an actual exploding wire device for nano-powder production was constructed. The test voltage and current waveforms are in good agreement with the calculated results.

Abstract:The uniformity of electric current distribution in a wire array and its unstable behavior during the process of underwater electrical explosion have been investigated. Two exploding wires in parallel were used in the experiments and the current waveforms flowing through each wire were obtained using two self-integrating coils. Significant differences in the current waveforms of the two wires were observed near the melting point, which was attributed to the non-simultaneity of heating and phase transition. Unbalanced current distribution caused by the deviations of wire dimensions was analyzed based on a magneto-hydrodynamic model, and the simulation results show that thermodynamic state difference between two wires is present throughout the entire electrical explosion process. It is also found that the initial stored energy of pulse generator will affect the thermodynamic state evolution of exploding wires, resulting in different behaviors of current distribution after the explosion time. The slightly different heating rate caused by unbalanced current distribution in a wire array can break the symmetry of converging shock waves and lower the pressure peak in the vicinity of implosion axis, which was discussed based on the two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations.

Abstract:The shock waves generated by an underwater electrical wire explosion were investigated. A microsecond time-scale pulsed current source was used to trigger the electrical explosion of copper wires with a length of 5 cm and a diameter of 200 μm. The energy-storage capacitor was charged to a relatively low energy so that the energy deposited onto the wire was not large enough to fully vaporize the whole wire. Two shock waves were recorded with a piezoelectric gauge that was located at a position of 100 mm from the exploding wire. The first and weak shock wave was confirmed to be the contribution from wire melting, while the second and stronger shock wave was the contribution from wire vaporization. The phenomenon whereby the first shock wave generated by melting being overtaken by the shock wave due to vaporization was observed.

Abstract:Driven by a pulsed current of 1-3 kA in amplitude and 15-30 ns in risetime, electrical explosions of tungsten wires of different diameters ( 25/18/15/12.5/10 mu m) were carried out. Shadowgraphs as well as interferograms of exploding tungsten wires were obtained with a YAG Laser. The experimental results showed that with the decrease in wire diameter, the maximum specific energy E-sm ( the maximum deposition energy per atom), as well as the wire expansion speed has an increase-decrease tendency under both negative and positive current pulses. In order to understand this phenomenon, the specific power P-v at the start moment of vaporization was simulated, and the changing tendency of P-v versus diameter was found to be similar to that of E-sm versus diameter. Based on the experiments and simulations, we propose that the specific power P-v at the evaporating point must also be regarded as an important factor leading to the change in the maximum specific energy E-sm.

Based on the pulsed power generator PPG-1 (400 kA/100 ns), the process of 10-μm-W wire explosion at tens of kiloamperes was investigated. The time sequence images of wire explosion were obtained by X-ray backlighting with X-pinch X-ray point source, and the mass density distribution of the exploding wire at a certain time was calibrated by method of grayscale contrast based on a particular step wedge filter. Abstract:The evolution of single- and dual-wire Z-pinch of 8-μm W was investigated by X-ray backlighting using an X-pinch X-ray source. The experiments were carried out on the pulsed-power generator PPG-I (400 kA/500 kV/100 ns), which was designed and constructed by the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University. To scale the mass density distributions at different explosion time, a mass step wedge including eight tungsten layers was fabricated and inserted between the object Z-pinch and the X-ray film. By a large number of imaging experiments, the physical images of coronal plasma formation and interwire plasma merging were obtained. Based on the X-ray photos of 8-μm W and mass step wedge, the mass density distributions at different explosion time were drawn, and the conductance curve of time dependence of 8-μm W was also calculated using waveform of voltage and current.

Abstract:The electrical explosion of a conductor driven by a pulsed current can be used to simulate the effects of explosions in the laboratory, including the resulting shock waves and bubble dynamics. A fine metallic wire can also be used to initiate pulsed discharge in different media. This study shows images of an exploding wire across an air–water interface for the first time in the literature. The transient process was analyzed using high-speed backlit photography as well as waveforms of the spectrum and discharge. Streamer-like discharge developed from a triple-junction point within the current pause to induce a restrike in metallic aerosol, verifying that gas discharge was prevalent in the system. An upward dense plasma jet accompanied by a crown-like water spike was then observed and led to violent plasma–water interactions (mushroom cloud-like cluster) that were examined through a hydrodynamic simulation. The Stark broadening of the Hα line at 656.28 nm suggested that the electron density of the reaction zone could be 1018 cm−3 or higher. The resolved spatial–temporal images revealed that the plasma evolution process (in μs) was much faster than hydrodynamic processes, including damage to the interface and perturbations of the bubbles (in ms). Water, thus, remained in a “rigid” state during the pulsed discharge, and the explosion of the wire in it was not an adiabatic process at a timescale of 102 μs. Recombination and heat loss through the electrode governed the evolution of the post-discharge plasma, and the microscopic images revealed nano-lamellate nucleation on the surface of the electrode.

Abstract:During underwater electrical wire explosion, liquid–vapor transitions are crucial to the energy deposition and the generation of shock waves. To explore the characteristics of liquid–vapor transition during electrical explosions in water, a large-scale molecular simulation method was designed. The modeling scales experimental exploding wires to nano-size and then tracks the motion of each atom. The surrounding water medium was simplified as an expanding wall, whose velocity was determined by experimental steak images. Using this model, the phase transition processes at different energy deposition rates were compared. The results show that high energy deposition rates can make the discontinuous liquid–vapor phase transition disappear, forming an axially uniform vapor column, while slow energy injection will change the exploding wire into a foamlike liquid–vapor mixture at a subcritical temperature. The different shapes of wire–water interfaces in the experimental shadowgraphs can be explained by these features of liquid–vapor transition.

Abstract:Electrical explosion of a wire (EEW) has been investigated for more than ten years at Tsinghua University, and the main results are reviewed in this paper. Based on EEW in vacuum, an X-pinch was used as an x-ray source for phase-contrast imaging of small insects such as mosquitoes and ants in which it was possible to observe clearly their detailed internal structures, which can never be seen with conventional x-ray radiography. Electrical explosion of a wire array (EEWA) in vacuum is the initial stage in the formation of a wire-array Z-pinch. The evolution of EEWA was observed with x-ray backlighting using two X-pinches as x-ray sources. It was found that each wire in an EEWA exhibits a core–corona structure instead of forming a fully vaporized metallic vapor. This structure is detrimental to the plasma implosion of a Z-pinch. By inserting an insulator as a flashover switch into the cathode, formation of a core–corona structure was suppressed and core-free EEWA was realized. EEW in gases was used for nanopowder production. Three parameters (vaporization rate, gas pressure, and energy deposited in the exploding plasma) were found to influence the nanoparticle size. EEW in water was used for shock-wave generation. The shock wave generated by melting could be recorded with a piezoelectric gauge only in underheat EEW. For EEW with a given stored energy but different energy-storage capacitor banks, the small capacitor bank produced a rapidly rising current that deposited more energy into the wire and generated a stronger shock wave.

Abstract:In this study, underwater electrical explosions of aluminum wires of various sizes were carried out with an initial energy storage of ∼53.5 kJ. Two piezoelectric probes were adopted to record the pressure waveforms. The experiments were divided into different discharge types, and the statistical properties of the electrical and shock-wave parameters of the different discharge types were compared. The experimental results show that there are three discharge types, called type A (breakdown type), type B (transition type), and type C (matched type). The three types differ in the resistance characteristics of the plasma channel during the plasma growth process, which are determined from the average electrical field strength and the remaining energy in the circuit at the peak voltage. Shock waves from type C discharges are more likely to exhibit a higher peak pressure, a larger impulse, and a higher energy density than the other types. However, using a matched wire that matches a specific discharge type, a high peak pressure, large impulse, and high energy density can also be achieved under type A or type B discharges. For example, the maximum peak pressures at ∼33 cm under type B and type C discharges are 38.7 and 42.4 MPa, respectively. These results provide significant guidance for load selection in underwater electrical wire explosion engineering applications.

Abstract:Electrothermal instability and its effect on the uniformity of discharge channels during underwater electrical wire explosions at different energy deposition rates have been investigated. According to the liquid–vapor transition mechanism, we classified underwater electrical explosion into “phase explosion mode” and “supercritical mode.” Two sets of experiments corresponding to the two modes were conducted, and the exploding wires were observed by a shadow imaging system. Results showed that a bamboo-shaped discharge channel was formed in the phase explosion mode, whereas the discharge channel in the supercritical mode was a uniform cylinder. Self-consistent magnetohydrodynamic simulation results indicated that exploding wires transfer into liquid–vapor coexistence phase in the phase explosion mode, accompanied by a rapid increase in the density perturbation and the formation of bamboo-shaped structures. Moreover, a small perturbation model was derived to analyze the electrothermal instability in different thermodynamic states. It was indicated that the density perturbation is easier to grow in the liquid–vapor coexistence state than the supercritical state, which provides a theoretical explanation for the differences between the two electrical explosion modes.
High-Speed Imaging of Transition from Fluid Breakup to Phase Explosion in Electric Explosion of Tungsten Wires in Air

Abstract:High-speed visible imaging of sub-microsecond electric explosion of wires at the low specific energy deposition threshold reveals three distinct modes of wire failure as capacitor charge voltage and energy deposition are increased. For 100 micron diameter gold-plated tungsten wires of 2 cm length, deposited energies of 1.9 eV/atom produces a liquid column that undergoes hydrodynamic breakup into droplets with radii of order of wire diameter on timescales of 200 microseconds. Instability growth, column breakup, and droplet coalescence follow classic Rayleigh-Plateau predictions for instability of fluid column. Above 3.2 eV/atom of deposited energy, wires are seen to abruptly transition to an expanding mixture of micron scale liquid-droplets and vapor within one frame (less than 3.33 microseconds), which has been termed phase explosion in literature. Between these two limits, at 2.5 eV/atom of deposited energy, wire radius is unchanged for the first 10 microseconds before the onset of a rapid expansion and disintegration that resembles homogeneous nucleation of mechanically unstable bubbles. Thermodynamic calculations are presented that separate cases by temperature obtained during heating: below boiling point, near boiling point, and exceeding boiling point.

Abstract:A device for nano-powder production by electrical explosion of wires was designed and built. Eight wires housed in the discharge chamber are exploded one by one before opening the chamber for the collection of the produced nano-powder. To increase the rate of energy deposition into a wire, the electrical behavior of the discharge circuit including the exploding wire was simulated. Abstract:Spontaneous ignition of electrical wire caused by the Joule heat generated in core due to overloading or a short circuit is common, and is significantly influenced by wind velocity, but has been very limited addressed yet. This paper, for the first time, presents an experimental investigation in spontaneous ignition of over-loaded wire under transverse wind (perpendicular to wire). Polyethylene (PE)-insulated wires with a NiCr core diameter of 0.8 mm and the insulation layer thickness of 0.3 mm and 0.15 mm are employed as sam -ples. It can be found that with the increase of transverse wind velocity, the ignition delay time demonstrates a non-monotonic tendency (firstly decreases then increases, and decreases again, finally increases) until ignition limit, where four regimes are clarified according to different controlling mechanisms. The ignition delay time declines with the increase of electrical current. One of the most noteworthy findings is that the ignition delay time declines as the insulation thickness increases, which shows an opposite trend with the results of piloted ignition for thermally thin materials. In order to distinguish the ignition and non-ignition zones, an ignitabil-ity map considering both the gas phase kinetic effects and the solid phase heat loss effect is established based on two non-dimensional parameters [Damkohler number ( Da ) and Rloss]. A theoretical ignition model com-bining the effects of pyrolysis time, mixing time and chemical time is established, which well interprets the variation trend of ignition delay time and verifies the significant role of the chemical time in spontaneous ig-nition.
