Abstract:Objective More literature has demonstrated that diode laser indirect photocoagulation showed a good outcome for retinopathy of prematurity ( ROP), but has still less reports of frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser for ROP. This study compared the treatment efficacy of frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser ( wavelength, 532 nm ) with diode laser ( wavelength, 810 nm) photocoagulation in the treatment of high-risk pre-threshold ROP. Methods The clinical records of 20 preterm infants (40 eyes) treated in Peking University People's Hospital from February through May, 2007 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients received diode laser photocoagulation in lateral eyes and frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser photocoagulation in the fellow eyes during treatment. The mean age until photocoagulation was 8. 25 ± 3. 54 weeks. The mean correcting gestational age, birth weight and gestational age was 39. 15 ±3. 69 weeks, 1 488. 15 ±326. 13 g and 30. 25 ± 1. 65 weeks respectively. Results Regression of ROP occurred in 19 patients (38 eyes). Only one patient (2 eyes) progressed to stage 4 after photocoagulated. There was no any adverse side effect was found during the treatment. There was no statistically significant difference in the power and number of laser spots with diode laser in comparison with frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser photocoagulation (t = 0. 735, P = 0. 471 ). Conclusion The results suggest that frequency-doubled Nd; YAG laser photocoagulation is of an similar effectiveness in the treatment of high-risk pre-threshold ROP to diode laser photocoagulation.
