Abstract:This paper discussed the effect of aggregate grading on the low temperature cracking resistance in asphalt mixtures from the perspective of the degree of aggregate interlock. A total of 9 asphalt mixtures with 9 different aggregate gradations and one asphalt binder content were studied. Volumetric analysis of asphalt mixtures and the coarse portion of the aggregate blend showed aggregate grading had a significant influence on the degree of aggregate interlock in asphalt mixtures. A trend was existed in the low temperature performance changing with the gradation's fluctuation. With the aid of rank sum test, it was indicated the variation of the aggregate grading affected the low temperature performance significantly, and the accepted fluctuating range of gradation was proposed which met law temperature cracking resistance in asphalt pavement. The findings also indicated a positive correlation existed between the degree of aggregate interlock in asphalt mixtures and the low temperature performance.
