Abstract:1.1 Research background Interest in the Tm3+-doped fiber laser originates from its emission band in the range of 14002700nm lying between the bands of Er3+ and Nd3+ ions. Since the advent of double-cladding configuration of fiber and the recent technological development of high-power laser diodes, output power (performance) of Tm3+-doped fiber lasers has scaled exponentially. Up to date, the maximum output achieved in Tm3+-doped fiber lasers has been comparable with that from Yb3+-doped fiber lasers. Laser beam in the 2~3┤m wavelength range has wide applications. First, it is a good candidate in laser microsurgery due to high absorption of water in this spectral region thus can provide high-quality laser tissue cutting and welding. In addition, this wavelength-range laser has potential applications in environment monitoring, LIDAR, optical-parametric-oscillation (OPO) pump sources, and so on [1-4]. For obtaining laser emission in the mid-infrared wavelength region, the Tm3+-doped fiber is an excellent candidate due to several unique advantages it possesses. First, the Tm3+-doped fiber has a strong absorption spectrum that has good overlap with the emission band of commercially available AlGaAs laser diodes, which have been significantly developed and are being developed with an unprecedented speed. Second, the specific energy-level structure of Tm3+ ions provides the Tm3+-doped fiber laser a special advantageous energytransfer process-the 3H4+3H6→3F4+3F4 cross relaxation process. In this process, two excitedstate ions can be obtained with depletion of just one absorbed pump photon. With an appropriately high doping level, the cross relaxation process can offer a quantum efficiency close to two, which greatly improves the efficiency of the Tm3+-doped fiber laser. Thirdly, the Tm3+-doped fiber has a very broad emission band, spanning over more than 400 nm. This feature offers the Tm3+-doped fiber laser an especially high-degree wavelength tunability, which is very useful in applications such as spectroscopy, atmospheric sensing and so on.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high power passively Q-switched Tm-doped fiber laser with different initial transmission (IT) Cr2+:ZnSe crystals as the SA and varying gain fiber length. By employing 69% IT Cr2+:ZnSe crystal and 3.0m length Tm-doped fiber, stable Q-switched pulse train having a repetition rate of 150.7kHz and a pulse duration of 160ns was obtained with maximum pulse energy of 8.74µJ and highest level output power of 1.32W at a slope efficiency of 20.1%. To increase the output power, 79% IT Cr2+:ZnSe crystal was used to decrease the intra-cavity loss. Stable Q-switched pulses with increased repetition rate and decreased pulse duration were achieved, but were finally terminated by unstable switching before reaching the maximum pump power which may be induced by partial two-photon absorption (TPA) and excited state absorption (ESA) of Cr2+:ZnSe crystal. Moreover, a longer Tm-doped fiber of 10.0m and the 69% IT Cr2+:ZnSe crystal were also employed to improve the Q-switched pulses power by increasing the intra-cavity gain. Stable Q-switching until maximum pump power can be kept thus achieving the highest output power of 1.63W which is, to the best of our knowledge, the reported most powerful Cr2+:ZnSe crystal based passively Q-switched Tm-doped fiber laser.

Abstract:Demonstrations of cw lasing in Cr2+:ZnSe poly-crystal are reported. The laser consists of a 1.7-mm-thick Cr2+:ZnSe poly-crystal disc pumped by a Tm-silica double-clad fibre laser at 2050nm. Using a concave high-reflection mirror with a radius of curvature of 500mm as the rear mirror, the laser delivers up to 1030mW of radiation around 2.367 mu m.

Abstract:Gain-switched by a 1.914-µm Tm:YLF crystal laser, a two-stage Tm(3+) fiber laser has been achieved 100-W level ~2-µm pulsed laser output with a slope efficiency of ~52%. With the 6-m length of Tm fiber, the laser wavelength was centered at 2020 nm with a bandwidth of ~25 nm. Based on an acousto-optic switch, the pulse repetition rate can be modulated from 500 Hz to 50 kHz, and the laser pulse width can be tuned between 75 ns and ~1 µs. The maximum pulse energy was over 10 mJ, and the maximum pulse peak power was 138 kW. By using the fiber-coiling-induced mode-filtering effect, laser beam quality of M2 = 1.01 was obtained. Further scaling the pulse energy and average power from such kind of gain-switched fiber lasers was also discussed.

With 7-cm long fiber, a laser at near 2 microns is obtained with the threshold of 135 mW, maximum output power of 1.09 W, and slope efficiency of 9.6% with respect to the launched power from a laser diode at 790 nm. The output stability of this fiber laser is within 5%. The dependence of the performance of fiber lasers on the operation temperature and cavity configuration parameters is also investigated.

Abstract:Resonantly pumped by a 1.914-mu m Q-switched Tm:YLF laser, high-peak-power stable laser pulse from gain-switched similar to 1.94-mu m Tm3+-doped silica fiber lasers are reported for the first time. The slope efficiency was over 80% with respect to absorbed pump power, and chaotic spiking was effectively eliminated by using fast gain switching. With a 4-m Tm3+ fiber, pulse energy of 1.3 mJ and pulsewidth of 61 ns were obtained, corresponding to peak power of 21.3 kW.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable, narrow linewidth, linearly polarized and gain-switched Cr 2+ :ZnSe laser pumped by a Tm, Ho:YVO 4 laser at 10 kHz pulse repetition frequency. By setting a quartz birefringent filter with a Brewster angle in the cavity, the linearly polarized Cr 2+ :ZnSe laser can be continuously tuned from 2.45 to 2.50 μm, and the output power was almost not changed. In addition, the linewidth was compressed to about 5 nm. At the incident pump power to the crystal of 14 W, the maximum output power of 2.84 W was obtained, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 20.4%.

Abstract:Diode-end-pumped continuous-wave (CW) Tm:YAP and Tm:YLF slab lasers are demonstrated. The a-cut Tm:YAP and Tm:YLF slabs with doping concentrations of 4 at.-% and 3.5 at.-%, respectively, are pumped by fast-axis collimated laser diodes at room temperature. The maximum CW output powers of 72 and 50.2 W are obtained from Tm:YAP and Tm:YLF, respectively, while the pump power is 220 W, corresponding to the slope efficiencies of 37.9% and 26.6%, respectively.

Abstract:We report a novel passively Q-switched 2 μm Tm(3+) fiber laser simply by distributed stimulated Brillouin scattering with an all-fiber configuration. The maximum output power is 2.49 W with an optical-to-optical slope efficiency of 12%, and the laser wavelength is centered at ~1991 nm with a spectral width of >10 nm. The single pulse energy can be over 50 μJ with a pulse width of about 20 ns, and the pulse repetition rate can be tuned from several kilohertz to tens of kilohertz by changing the pump power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest-average-power passively Q-switched 2 μm Tm(3+) fiber laser in the nanosecond regime.

Abstract:We describe the high power operation of transparent Tm: YAG ceramic lasers end-pumped by a 80 W laser-diode bar at 782 nm. The optimization of the Tm3+-ion doping concentration and the laser configuration for high power Tm:YAG ceramic lasers are investigated. We obtain the continuous wave (CW) output power of 24.6 W with the slope efficiency of 38.2% from a 6 at.% Tm:YAG ceramic slab laser. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest output average-power of diode-bar end-pumped Tm: YAG ceramic lasers ever reported.

Abstract:High-efficient continuous wave (cw) and actively Q-switched Tm:YAG ceramic lasers were described successfully. Pumping with fiber coupled laser diode at 792nm, the maximum cw output power of 5.21W with improved beam quality was obtained with a slope efficiency of 46.1%. The shortest pulse width of 107ns was achieved with the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 0.5kHz, resulting in a largest pulse energy of 1.44mJ and a highest peak power of 13.42kW.

Abstract:In this paper, a high power of cryogenic Tm(8 at.-%),Ho(1.4 at.-%)∶YLF end-pumped by a fiber-coupled laser diode (LD) with number aperture of 0.3, core diameter of 0.4 mm, and central wavelength of 792 nm at 20 ℃ temperature is reported. The highest continuous-wave (CW) power of 5.2 W at 2.05 μm is achieved under pump power of 14.8 W, corresponding to optical-optical conversion efficiency of 35%, and the slope efficiency is greater than 40%. The threshold power is only about 0.48 W because of the long lifetime, large effective emission cross section, and low reabsorption loss in Tm,Ho∶YLF crystal. Under pumping power of 29.6 W with dual-end pumping configuration, the highest CW power of 10.2 W at 2.051 μm is attained, corresponding to optical-optical conversion efficiency of 33%, and the slope efficiency is greater than 36%.

Abstract:Cr2+:ZnSe having a wide range of absorption and emission spectra, is an excellent tuning laser material in mid-IR wavelength range. In this paper, lasing abilities of Cr2+:ZnSe had been studied by analyzing the absorption spectrum, emission spectrum and tuning ability. The Cr2+:ZnSe poly-crystal laser material is prepared by physical vapor transport (PVT) technique. The sample is cut and polished in thickness of 1.7 mm and with diameter of 10 mm. Pumped by a 2.05 mm Tm-ion doped silica fiber laser, delivering maximum output power of 8 W, maximum average output power of 1.034 W around 2.367 mm was demonstrated in a plate-concave resonate. The laser bandwidth was measured as 10 nm. At the same time, the laser can be tuned in 100 nm range by angle-tuning method in research of tuning ability of the laser material.

Abstract:We report on a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked Tm:(Lu,Sc)2O3 ceramic laser in-band pumped by a Raman fiber laser at 1627 nm. The nonlinear refractive index (n2) of the Tm:(Lu,Sc)2O3 ceramic has been measured to be 4.66 × 10-20 m2/W at 2000 nm. An average output power up to 1.02 W at 2060 nm is achieved for transform-limited 280-fs pulses at a repetition rate of 86.5 MHz, giving an optical efficiency with respect to the absorbed pump power of 36.4%. Pulses as short as 66 fs at 2076 nm are produced at the expense of output power (0.3 W), corresponding to a spectral bandwidth of 69 nm. The present work reveals the potential of Tm3+-doped sesquioxide transparent ceramics for power scaling of femtosecond mode-locked bulk lasers emitting in the 2-µm spectral range.

Abstract:Cr3+/Tm3+ co-doped fluorogermanate glasses were prepared by melt-quenching technique, and their luminescent properties were investigated under excitation of Xenon lamp and 808 nm laser diode, respectively. Through strong sensitization of Cr3+, an enhanced 1.8 µm emission band of Tm3+: 3F4→3H6 can be achieved in an extremely extended excitation band of 380-900 nm. The possible energy transfer mechanism between Cr3+ and Tm3+ is rationally discussed. On the basis of experimental data, the highest energy transfer efficiency is up to 91.70%. Our results suggest this efficient Cr3+/Tm3+ co-doping system provides a selective pump mechanism for obtaining 1.8 µm laser and thus shows attractive applications in near-infrared fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Abstract:we report on the recent progress on high power pulsed 2.8 mu m Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser through techniques of passively and actively Q-switching in our research group. In passively Q-switched operation, a diode-cladding-pumped mid-infrared passively Q-switched Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser with an average output power of watt-level based on a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Stable pulse train was produced at a slope efficient of 17.8% with respect to launched pump power. The maximum average power of 1.01 W at a repetition rate of 146.3 kHz was achieved with a corresponding pulse energy of 6.9 mu J. The maximum peak power was calculated to be 21.9 W. In actively Q-switched operation, a diode-pumped actively Q-switched Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser at 2.8 mu m with an optical chopper was reported. The maximum laser pulse energy of up to 130 mu J and a pulse width of 127.3 ns at a repetition rate of 10 kHz with an operating wavelength of 2.78 mu m was obtained, yielding the maximum peak power of exceeding 1.1 kW.
