Abstract:In practical structural health monitoring, it is essential to develop an efficient technique which can detect structural local damage utilizing only a limited number of measured acceleration responses of structures subject to unknown (unmeasured) excitations inputs. In this paper, a finite-element based time domain system identification method is proposed for this purpose. Structure state vectors are treated as implicit functions of structural dynamic parameters and excitations. The unknown structural dynamic parameters and excitation inputs are identified by an algorithm based on recursive least squares estimation with unknown excitations (RLSE-UI). Structural damage at element level is detected by the degrading of stiffness of damaged structural elements. Numerical simulation of a 3-story building demonstrates the proposed method can identify structural element stiffness parameters with good accuracy and structural damage at element level can be located from the degrading of element stiffness parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, a wavelet domain element level system identification technique is proposed to address structural damage assessment problem. Under the assumption that the ambient excitation can be modeled as a white-noise process, the output covariance is computed firstly to separate the effect of random excitation from the response measurement. The wavelet transform (WT) is then employed to estimate the modal parameters and structural global stiffness matrix. After that, a finite element-based optimization technique is adopted to identify structural stiffness at the element level. Under the assumption that structural damage will mainly induce the stiffness reduction of structural elements, structural damage position and severity can be assessed by directly checking the change of the estimated element level stiffness vectors. An experimental study on a 3-storey frame is performed to demonstrate the proposed technique and verify its accuracy. The results prove its capacity in both identifying structural stiffness properties and assessing structural damage conditions.

Abstract:To solve the problem of structural damage detection with limited input and output measurement signals, a technique based on sequential application of the extended Kalman estimator and least-squares estimation is proposed in this paper for the identification of structure parameters and unknown excitations. Compared with the classical extended Kalman filter approach, the proposed technique can be used under unknown excitations. Structural damage can be detected by tracking the changes in the identified values of dynamic parameters at element level, e.g., the degrading of stiffness parameters. Numerical examples of damage detection of a plan truss and a beam in finite element model and experimental study of damage detection of an 8-DOF shear framed building are used to validate the feasibility of proposed technique.

Abstract:Current methods for structural damage identification,such as GA algorithms and neural networks technology,are implemented often based on a few measured data and large numbers of simulation data.The tremendous time-consuming computational work for calculating the response data to establish the dynamic model of damaged structure is an important issue.Adopting the advanced modeling method of element stiffness matrix modification,the order of the structure stiffness matrix can be kept invariable in establishing the model of intact and damaged structures,and the eigenvalue perturbation theory is introduced to obtain the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the damaged structure for reducing the computation load.The response signal of composite laminated plate by the wavelet transform,shows that the first order eigenvalue perturbation theory provides enough accurate dynamic response for detecting small structural damage while the computational tack is greatly reduced.

Abstract:Estimation of structural parameters for the detection of structural damage is an important task which has received great attention. Damage in structures is an intrinsically local phenomenon. In practical structural damage detection, it is often impossible to deploy many sensors to accurately measure all excitation inputs and all output responses of structures. So, it is essential to develop an efficient technique which can detect structural local damage utilizing only a limited number of measured responses of structures subject to some unmeasured excitation inputs. In this paper, a finite-element based time domain system identification method is proposed for this purpose. Element level structural parameters and the unknown inputs to structures are identified by an algorithm based on sequential application of the Kalman extended estimator for the extended state vector and the recursive least squares estimation for the unknown inputs. Abstract:It is important but still challenging to detect structural damage with limited input and output measurement signals. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed for detecting structural damage with limited input and output measurement signals. The algorithm is based on sequential application of an extended Kalman estimator for the extended state vector of a structure and least-squares estimation of its unknown external excitations. Analytical recursive solutions for the identification of structural parameters and unknown excitations are derived. Such straightforward derivation and analytical solutions are not available in the previous literature. Structural damage can be detected from the degradation of the identified element stiffness. Numerical examples of detecting damage of some small size structural systems are used to demonstrate the performances of the proposed algorithm. Then, the algorithm is extended to detect structural damage of large size structural systems based on substructure approach. Inter-connection effect between adjacent substructures is considered by ‘additional unknown inputs’ to substructures. It is shown that the ‘additional unknown inputs’ can be estimated by the algorithm without the measurements of the substructure interface DOFs, which is superior to previous identification approaches. A numerical example of detecting structural damage of a large size truss illustrates the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Most existing health monitoring methodologies require direct measurement of input excitation for implementation of system identification, or base on a finite element model. However, in many cases, there is no easy wawy to measure these inputs, or alternatively, to externally excite these structures. Therefore, Structural health monitoring (SHM) methods based on ambient vibration have become important in civil engineering. Here, a new approach named Cross Spectral Energy Method (CSEM) is proposed to detect structural damage location under the unknown ambient excitation. The characteristic of this damage detection technology is directly based on the measured cross spectrum density, which can avoid errors introduced by system identification methods. Furthermore, the cross spectral energy indicator is computed from measured response data without reference to a finite element model of the structure, only the structural topologic parameters enter the computation of the cross spectral energy field. In order to verify the efficacy of the proposed approach, simulation studies are applied to a 2-bay continue beam structure. Additionally, adding noise to the measured vibration response is performed to investigate the robustness of the methodology to damage identification. The numerical results demonstrate that the cross spectral energy indicator proposed is quite effective in the damage detection for single or multiple locations and is robust for noises.

Abstract:In this paper, the technique recently proposed by the authors for the detection of structural local damage in large size linear structures is extended to explore the detection of local damage in some complex nonlinear structures. The technique is based on substructural approach in which a complex nonlinear structure is decomposed into substructures Interaction effect between adjacent substructures is accounted by considering the interaction forces at substructural interfaces as the 'unknown inputs' to the substructures. An algorithm utilizing the classical Kalman extended estimator and the recursive least squares estimation for the unknown inputs is proposed to identify structural parameters at element level and the 'unknown inputs' to the substructure. Two cases that measurements at the substructure interfaces are available or not available are considered. Structural local damage is estimated from the change of structural parameters, such as the degradation of the stiffness, at element level. The technique enables distributed identification of local damage in complex nonlinear structures utilizing only a limited number of measured acceleration responses. Performance of proposed technique is illustrated by a numerical example of detecting local damage in a multi-story hysteretic building. It is shown that the proposed technique can be used for detecting structural local damage in some complex nonlinear structures.

Abstract:It is highly desirable to explore efficient algorithms for detecting structural damage of large size structural systems with limited input and output measurements. In this paper, a new structural damage detection algorithm based on substructure approach is proposed for large size structural systems with limited input and output measurements. Inter-connection effect between adjacent substructures is treated as, additional unknown inputs. to substructures. Extended state vector of each substructure and its unknown excitations are estimated by sequential extended Kalman estimator and least-squares estimation, respectively. It is shown that the, additional unknown inputs. can be estimated by the algorithm without the measurements on the substructure interface DOFs, which is superior to previous substructural identification approaches. Also, structural parameters and unknown excitation are estimated in a sequential manner, which simplifies the identification problem compared with other existing work. Structural damage can be detected from the degradation of the identified substructural element stiffness values. The performances of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated by several numerical examples and a lab experiment. Measurement noise effect is considered. Both the simulation results and experimental data validate that the proposed algorithm is viable for structural damage detection of large size structural systems with limited input and output measurements.

Abstract:Here,a method was proposed for structural damage detection of a multi-story shear building under unknown earthquake excitation with partial observations of absolute acceleration responses.Based on the extended Kalman estimator and the least square estimation adopted sequentially,the structural parameters above the first story of the building could be identified.Then,the structural parameters of the first story were identified with the frequency equation.Finally,the unknown earthquake excitation identified via the numerical solution to a first-order differential equation.It was shown with a numerical example that the proposed method can identify structural parameters and earthquake excitation with good accuracy;structural damage under unknown earthquake excitation can be detected by tacking degradation of structural stiffness parameters.

Abstract:An early detection of structural damages is critical for the decision making of repair and replacement maintenance in order to guarantee a specified structural reliability. Consequently, the structural damage detection, based on vibration data measured from the structural health monitoring (SHM) system, has received considerable attention recently. The traditional time-domain analysis techniques, such as the least square estimation (LSE) method and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) approach, require that all the external excitations (inputs) be available, which may not be the case for some SHM systems. Recently, these two approaches have been extended to cover the general case where some of the external excitations (inputs) are not measured, referred to as the LSE with unknown inputs (LSE-UI) and the EKF with unknown inputs (EKF-UI). Also, new analysis methods, referred to as the sequential non-linear least-square estimation with unknown inputs and unknown outputs (SNLSE-UI-UO) and the quadratic sum-square error with unknown inputs (QSSE-UI), have been proposed for the damage tracking of structures when some of the acceleration responses are not measured and the external excitations are not available. In this paper, these newly proposed analysis methods will be compared in terms of accuracy, convergence and efficiency, for damage identification of structures based on experimental data obtained through a series of experimental tests using a small-scale 3-story building model with white noise excitation. The capability of the LSE-UI, EKF-UI, SNLSE-UI-UO and QSSE-UI approaches in tracking the structural damages will be demonstrated. © 2009 SPIE.

In this paper, an adaptive damage tracking technique, referred to as the sequential nonlinear least-square estimation with unknown inputs and unknown outputs (SNLSE-UI-UO) and the substructure approach are used to identify damages at critical locations (hot spots) of the complex structure. In our approach, only a limited number of response data are needed and the external excitations may not be measured, thus significantly reducing the number of sensors required and the corresponding computational efforts. The accuracy of the proposed approach is illustrated using a long-span truss with finite-element formulation and an story nonlinear base-isolated building. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of tracking the local structural damages without the global information of the entire structure, and it is suitable for local structural health monitoring.

Abstract:Traditional structural system identification and damage detection methods use vibration responses under single excitation. This paper presents an auto/cross-correlation function-based method using acceleration responses under multiple ambient white noise or impact excitations. The auto/cross-correlation functions are divided into two parts. One is associated with the structural parameters and the other with the energy of the excitation. These two parts are updated sequentially using a two-stage method. Numerical and experimental studies are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method. The effects of measurement noise and number of measurement points on the identification results are also studied.

Abstract:A new method is proposed to assess the condition of structures under unknown support excitation by simultaneously detecting local damage and identifying the support excitation from several structural dynamic responses. The support excitation acting on a structure is modeled by orthogonal polynomial approximations, and the sensitivities of structural dynamic response with respect to its physical parameters and orthogonal coefficients are derived. The identification equation is based on Taylor’s first order approximation, and is solved with the damped least-squares method in an iterative procedure. A fifteen-story shear building model and a five-story three-dimensional steel frame structure are studied to validate the proposed method. Numerical simulations with noisy measured accelerations show that the proposed method can accurately detect local damage and identify unknown support excitation from only several responses of the structure. This method provides a new approach for detecting structural damage and updating models with unknown input and incomplete measured output information.

Abstract:There are significant changes in vibration responses when various damages appear in structures. Therefore, structural vibration responses contain rich structure damage information. In this paper, virtual impulse response of structure under ambient excitation is obtained through the inversion of a transfer function, and is decomposed into components by wavelet packet transform. Then the energy of these wavelet packet components is calculated to obtain the wavelet packet energy spectrum. And a novel damage index i.e. Energy Spectrum Anomaly Measure is developed to identify the existence of damage. Damage extent can also be inferred from the relative value of Energy Spectrum Anomaly Measure at various locations. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed index. It is shown that the proposed damage index works well in identifying structure damages free from the effect of various excitation and there is a positive correlation between the index and the damage severity.

Abstract:Recently, damage detection of large size structures based on the system identification, through the changes of structural dynamic parameters (mainly stiffness parameters), has attracted great attention. Due to practical limitations, it may not be possible to install enough sensors in the health monitoring system to measure either all the external excitations (inputs) or the responses (outputs) at all degree of freedoms. In this paper, a substructure approach for damage detection of large size structure is proposed. A large structure is decomposed into smaller substructures based on its finite element formulation. Interaction effect between adjacent substructures is accounted by considering the interaction forces at substructural interfaces as the `unknown inputs' to the substructures concerned. Two cases that measurements at the substructure interfaces are available or not available are considered. Base on sequential application of the extended Kalman estimator for the extended state vector and the least squares estimation for the unknown inputs, the approach can identify structural parameters, such as the stiffness, damping, and the unmeasured inputs in the substructures. Numerical simulation results of a 20 story shear building show that the proposed approach is capable of identifying structural parameters and unknown excitations with good accuracy. Thus, structural local damage can be detected through the degradation of the stiffness at structural element level.
Output-only structural damage detection under multiple unknown white noise excitations

Abstract:Most of the existing output-only damage detection methods require the number of sensors should be larger than the number of unknown excitation force, and the force location should be available. This paper presents a novel output-only damage detection method without these requirements. The proposed method is based on the correlation function of acceleration responses. When the structure is under white noise excitations (or ambient excitations), the correlation function of acceleration responses can be treated as free vibration responses with unknown initial conditions. The unknown structural parameters and initial conditions can be simultaneously identified by minimizing the difference between the measured and calculated correlation functions. The unknown initial conditions are identified with state space method and the unknown structural parameters are updated with sensitivity method. Numerical studies of a 2D truss and a five-bay 3D frame structure are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy, effectiveness, and robustness of the proposed method. Experimental studies on an eight-floor steel frame are further carried out. Results show that the proposed method is not only insensitive to environmental noise but also applicable when the number of sensors is less than that of unknown excitations. Also, the proposed method can be used for damage detection when the force location is unknown.

Abstract:In order to identify structural damages based on environment excitation,equations solving stochastic modulus of the undamaged and the damaged structure are obtained respectively.The method derives from eigenvalue issue,regards Poison ratio and elastic modulus as a constant and a stochastic variable,respectively,and in terms of known data and a combination of the FEM.Through introducing the element damage indicator,then initial damage of the structure can be detected.The method can accurately calculate initial damages,and initial damage locations can be estimated.
