Abstract:The influence of the Ni and Au back electrodes with or without ZnTe/ZnTe:Cu composite back layers, grown by electron beam evaporation, on the performance of CdTe solar cells was experimentally studied. The results show that the composite back layers significantly affect the electrical properties of the CdTe solar cells with Ni and Au back electrodes. For example, without the composite back layers, substitution of Ni for Au in the back electrode of the solar cells results in a poorer filling factor (FF), a higher short circuit current density (J sc) and a lower conversion efficiency (η). In contrast, with the composite back layers, the substitution leads to a lower FF, but a higher η, In addition, the dark characteristics show that the ZnTe composite back layers account for considerably bigger reduction of the three quantities, including its diode characteristics (A), its dark saturation current density (J 0) and its shunt resistance (R sh), of the cells with Ni back layers than that of the cells with Au back layers. The increased photoelectron emission possibly leads to a higher J sc. We conclude that the substitution of nickel for gold in the back electrode results in higher conversion efficiency and much lower cost of the CdTe solar cells.
