Abstract:Satellites are subject to severe vibrations during flight. These vibrations are induced by multiple sources during liftoff and the instant of final separation. Severe vibrations may cause damage to satellites. For this reason a payload adaptor is needed. Magnetorheological (MR) damper can be utilized to keep the satellites safe. But the common MR damper can't be used in cases of high-frequency vibrations because of stiffness hardening. For this reason, a new MR damper with decoupling mechanism has been designed by adding a decoupling sheet to the common MR damper. The decoupling mechanism makes the damper sensitive to vibration. This means that the damper has different stiffness and damping in case of different vibration amplitude. Based on the Bingham model, the model of the suggested MR damper has been built, and mathematical formulas has been deduced for dynamic stiffness, delay angle and transmissibility of the damper. Dynamic characteristics have been simulated. The results show that the decoupling sheet doesn't work in case of low frequency and high amplitude vibration and the damper presents high damping. In case of high frequency and low amplitude vibration, the decoupling sheet works and the damper presents small damping and stiffness. Thus the stiffness hardening has been avoided. Influence of internal sub structure resonance can be reduced by choosing appropriate parameters. This damper can be used for semi-active control of broadband vibration.

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are common methods that are used to mitigate cable vibrations with high effectiveness. Under the long-term effect of external loads and harsh environment, MR dampers will probably suffer from various durability problems, especially fluid leakage. Hence, accurate modeling and evaluation of the effect of fluid leakage of MR dampers are of great significance for bridge maintenance. This paper will investigate the mechanical behavior of MR dampers with fluid leakage after long-term operation and will evaluate their residual performance for cable vibration control. First, three MR dampers with fluid leakage will be selected from a real bridge, followed by a laboratory test to illustrate their damping force characteristics. Based on the experimental results, a theoretical model will be proposed to predict the mechanical behavior of the leaked dampers. A parametric analysis will then be conducted to show the effect of fluid leakage on the damping capacity. Then, one full-scale cable will be idealized as a taut string and the equation of motion for the cable-leaked MR damper system will be formulated. Additional modal damping provided by the MR damper will be determined numerically. The results show that fluid leakage could cause considerable slipping in the damping force. This slipping could lead to a remarkable reduction of the achieved additional modal ratios for the cables. The results of this paper could be of practical significance for the assessment of cable dampers performance and their maintenance on real bridges.

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are smart devices characterized as high damping force, short response time and lower energy consumption. They provide a promising way for vehicle isolation. However, transmissibility of conventional MR damper increases significantly at high frequency because of stiffiness hardening. For this reason, new MR damper with decoupling mechanism has been designed. The design is sensitive to amplitude and frequency of vibration, and produces stiffness and damping varied with amplitudes and frequencies vibrations. Dynamic model is derived based on Bingham model. Mathematical expressions of dynamic characteristics, including dynamic stiffness, delay angle, force transmission rate and dynamic range of damping force, are deducted by solving the models. Numerical simulations are used to study the dynamic characteristics. The results indicate that, the design produces large damping force in the low frequency high amplitude case and small damping force low stiffness in the opposite case. The high frequency stiffness hardening is avoided. This MR damper can be used to semi-active vibration control of vehicles.

Abstract:In the structure of Magnetorheological (MR) intelligent damper, the magnetic system is a pivotal part. It has direct influence on the damper's performance. In order to optimize damper's magnetic system, the parameter model of magnetic system was established, which included many factors such as radius of piston rod, radius of piston, number of coil, thickness of piston cylinder, gap length of the annular orifice, and effectual length of the annular orifice. Then the optimal model of magnetic system was established, which was based on the characteristic equation of MR fluid, the mechanical model of damper, the restrained dimension of damper's structure and the parameter model of magnetic system. And the optimal model was solved based on the large-scale optimizing algorithm. The optimized result was validated by FEM analysis. The results show that the optimizing method of magnetic system for MR intelligent damper is accurate and effective.

Abstract:A mathematical model is presented to evaluate the damping ratio of a cable-damper system, which considers the damper coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass, stiffness of the damper support, Magneto-dependent damper force, and sag and inclination of the cable. A 'generalized universal formula' is proposed for the damper design and optimization for the open-loop vibration of stay cables. The influence on the damping effect, of the cable inclination and sag and damper parameters, is then investigated. The procedures are proposed for design and optimization of MR dampers for all the cables on a cable-stayed bridge. By taking an actual large-span bridge as an example, the MR damper parameters and installation heights are determined for providing enough damping to suppress the rain-wind induced cable vibration.

Abstract:A new design method of MR dampers for suppression of cable vibration is proposed. The MR dampers for stay cables of Zhaobao Mountain Bridge are designed by utilizing the proposed design method, and the analysis of the cables incorporated with the designed MR dampers are carried out. The control effectiveness of the designed MR dampers to reduce the prototype cable wind-induced vibration and sinusoidal exciting using semiactive control strategy proposed by Harvot, and "Passive-off " strategy, are verified numerically and compared with each other strategy. The analytical results show that the designed MR dampers can effectively reduce the cable vibration. The availability and validity of the design method of MR dampers for cables are also simultaneously demonstrated.

Abstract:The Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge is a three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in Shandong Province, China. Because the stay cables are prone to vibration, 40 magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers were attached to the 20 longest cables of this bridge to suppress possible vibration. An innovative control algorithm for active and semiactive control of mass-distributed dynamic systems, e.g., stay cables, was proposed. The frequencies and modal damping ratios of the unimpeded tested cable were identified through an ambient vibration test and free vibration tests, respectively. Subsequently, a series of field tests were carried out to investigate the control efficacy of the free cable vibrations achieved by semiactive MR dampers, "Passive-off' MR dampers and "Passive-on" MR dampers. The first three modal damping ratios of the cable incorporated with the MR. dampers were also identified from the in situ experiments. The field experiment results indicated that the serniactive MR dampers can provide significantly greater supplemental damping for the cable than either the Passive-off or the Passive-on MR dampers because of the pseudonegative stiffness generated by the serniactive MR dampers.

Abstract:Modeling of magnetorheological (MR) dampers for cable vibration control to facilitate the design of even more effective and economical systems is still a challenging task. In this study, a parameter-adaptive three-element model is first established for a full-scale MR damper based on laboratory tests. The parameters of the model are represented by a set of empirical formulae in terms of displacement amplitude, voltage input, and excitation frequency. The model is then incorporated into the governing equation of cable-damper system for investigation of open-loop vibration control of stay cables in a cable stayed bridge. The concept of optimal voltage/current input achieving the maximum damping for the system is put forward and verified. Multi-mode suboptimal and Single-mode optimal open-loop control method is then developed. Important conclusions are drawn on application issues and unique characteristics of open-loop cable vibration control using MR dampers.

Abstract:As the world's first implementation of magnetorheological (MR) smart damping technique in bridge structures, a total of 312 semi-active MR dampers (RD-1005, Lord Corporation) have recently been installed for rain–wind-induced cable vibration control on the cable-stayed Dongting Lake Bridge, China. This project has undergone several stages of in situ experiments and tests: (i) modal tests of undamped cables, (ii) forced vibration tests of MR-damped trial cables, (iii) monitoring of MR-damped and undamped cable responses under rain–wind excitations, (iv) comparative tests using different damper setups, (v) full installation, and (vi) field measurements and real-time control tests after the installation. After outlining the above six stages of the whole project and addressing the experience and lessons learned from both open-loop control and closed-loop control practices, this study focuses on the design considerations of implementing MR dampers for cable vibration control, taking into account the effects of the damper stiffness, damper mass, stiffness of damper support, nonlinearity of the damper, and sag and inclination of the cable. The research efforts make it possible to develop elaborate MR dampers specific for application to bridge stay cables.

Multi-mode and multi-switch open-loop control methods in single- and twin-damper setups are then developed and a procedure for determining optimal geometric configuration of the twin-damper setup is proposed. The developed analytical formulations and design methods contribute to consummating the design specifications/guidelines for open-loop cable vibration control using MR dampers.

Abstract:An experimental study on vibration control of one stay cable using a magnetorheological fluid (MR) damper is described in the paper. A 14m-long stay cable model, which is a 1:16 scale model of a 220m-long prototype stay cable in the actual structure, is established for the experimental investigation. The planar simisoidal excitations with the resonant frequencies are generated by the exciter installed perpendicular to the stay cable model at a point near the low anchorage. The modal testing on the unimpeded stay cable is first performed to identify the actual modal properties and the dynamic performances. Then a series of vibration control tests are conducted on the stay cable incorporated with a small-size MR damper near the low anchorage under the sinusoidal excitations with the first two modal resonant frequencies. The control efficacies and the dynamic performances of the combined cable/MR damper system corresponding to the different current inputs to the MR damper and the semi-active MR damper are investigated comparatively. The experimental results of the vibration control of the stay cable model indicate that the semi-active MR damper can achieve much better control efficacy than the passive MR dampers supplied with constant currents, and the reason can be attributed to the pseudo-negative stiffness generated by the semi-active MR damper.

Abstract:In order to overcome long span cables vibration,a calculation model for the cable-damper system was formulated by Galerkin method based on the Hamilton principle.The motion of the cable was computed by using a finite series approximation with a Galerkin method.Runge-Kutta method was applied for the numerical solution of initial value problems with oscillating solutions.A static deflection shape was taken as an addition shape function to improve the sine series convergence.According to experimental set-up,the 154 m long cable in the 3th Qianjiang Cable Stayed Bridge was numerical calculated.A nonlinear hysteretic bi-viscous model was identified for MR dampers.The displacement signal at observation point was driven by harmonic planar loads,and transformed by Hilbert.The equivalent cable modal damping ratios attributed to MR dampers were predicted,and the relationship among the equivalent modal damping ratios,the system frequency,the voltage imposed and displacement responses at the point of cable was pursued.The phenomena and conclusions from simulation guiding the experimental operation could be certified by full scale experimental study.It is shown that MR dampers to the cable can more significantly reduce cable vibration than oil dampers do;the resonant frequencies of the cable with MR dampers have a little increased change;there is optimum voltage on which the maximum modal damping ratio can be achieved.

Abstract:Abstract The bridge stay cable, one of the most critical components in cable-stayed bridges, is vulnerable to vibrations owing to its low inherent damping capacity. Thus effective vibration control technology for bridge stay cables is extremely critical to safe operations of cable-stayed bridges. Several countermeasures have been presented and/or implemented to mitigate this vibration; however the passive method can only add a small amount of damping to the cables, excessive energy demand of active control devices severely limits its practicality, the semi-active control methods still have the drawbacks of complex state estimation module and a large amount of control algorithm calculation. This paper proposes a practical magnetorheological pseudo negative stiffness (MR-PNS) control system coupled with control strategy for bridge stay cables. The current reference point is introduced in the dynamic modeling of the MR-PNS control system to characterize the current control strategy. This paper investigates the adjustable of MR-PNS control system performance and energy consumption caused by different current strategies. Taking the vibration control of the Nanjing Second Yangtze River Bridge J20 cable as an example, the simulation results highlight the advantages of the MR-PNS control system that the failure area is small, the quasi-optimal area is wide, and it can still keep sort of vibration damping performance in the degenerate area. The model cable vibration control test proves the feasibility and efficiency of the single input MR-PNS bridge stay cables control method.

Abstract:Keeping the self-adjusting of damping behavior when the controllability of semi-active damping is disable, or saving the unnecessary energy when the continuous modulation of damping is not needed, the composite structure for self-shifting between passive and semi-active structure is presented. After damping dynamic model and controllable model for the composite structure are established according to the constitutive equation of magnetorheologcal-fluid, fluid mechanics and electromagnetism, the complex damping model is simplified utilizing magnetorheological behavior for structure design, and harmonization of semi-active structure and passive structure can be realized by using optimal design. Finally the controllability of composite structure was analyzed and the usefulness of simplification was verified by simulation.
Dynamic Properties of A Stay Cable Incorporated with Magneto-Rheological Fluid Dampers

Abstract:The intent of this paper is to investigate the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a stay cable incorporated with magneto-rheological (MR) dampers when the constant voltage of different levels is applied. A theoretical model of the cable-damper system with multi-degree-of-freedom is first formulated through discretization of the governing partial differential equations by finite difference approximation. The effect of the connected MR dampers on the cable is regarded as a concentrated damping force ascertained by a modified Bouc-Wen model and the Bingham model respectively. A 143m-long, stay cable taken from an actual cable structure is used for numerical studies. The analysis results show that the frequency response curves of the cable-damper system exhibit pronouncedly nonlinear feature due to the nonlinearity of the MR dampers. The equivalent damping ratio of the cable-damper system significantly depends on the response amplitude, the magnitude of applied voltage and the installation position of the dampers. In order to verify the efficacy of the MR dampers to mitigate the wind-induced cable vibration, dynamic response of the cable with and without MR dampers under the York Typhoon excitation is eventually analyzed.

Abstract:Cable structure is a major component of long-span bridges, such as cable-stayed and suspension bridges, and it transfers the main loads of bridges to the pylons. As these cable structures are exposed to continuous external loads, such as vehicle and wind loads, vibration control and continuous monitoring of the cable are required. In this study, an electromagnetic (EM) damper was designed and fabricated for vibration control and monitoring of the cable structure. EM dampers, also called regenerative dampers, consist of permanent magnets and coils. The electromagnetic force due to the relative motion between the coil and the permanent magnet can be used to control the vibration of the structure. The electrical energy can be used as a power source for the monitoring system. The effects of the design parameters of the damper were numerically analyzed and the damper was fabricated. The characteristics of the damper were analyzed with various external load changes. Finally, the vibration-control and energy-harvesting performances of the cable structure were evaluated through a hybrid simulation. The vibration-control and energy-harvesting performances for various loads were analyzed and the applicability to the cable structure of the EM damper was evaluated.
