Abstract:The chemical reduction of Au(III) ions and anisotropic growth of Au nanoparticles were studied in the biocompatible solution system containing glucose-citrate. Based on the characterization of VIS/NIR spectrum and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as the technology of gradient centrifugation separation, a chain gold particle nanostructure of potato-like shape with multiple twin crystals was obtained and its solution had two characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption peaks which appeared at the shorter and longer wavelength direction in the spectrum curve, respectively. The self-assembly property induced by NaOH in the solution containing spherical and elliptic gold nanoparticles was studied. The spectral curve profile of obtaining gold nanochains was similar to that of gold nanorod and the corresponding maximum longitudinal plasmon resonance absorption was located at longer wavelength≈800 nm. The formation of the chain gold nanostructure and self-assembly mechanism of gold nanoparticles are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Designed experiments are carried out to systematically study the effects of silver ions on morphology and yield of gold nanorods synthesized via a seed-mediated method. Gold nanorods synthesized with different silver ions and CTAB concentrations were characterized by absorption spectroscopy and TEM. The shape and yield of gold nanorods were effectively controlled by adjusting the concentration ratio of CTAB and silver ions for synthesis. Dark field images of a glass slide sample with gold nanorods deposit and a sample with gold nanrods staining cells further confirmed that high quality gold nanorods were obtained.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a new method to precisely tailor the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) wavelengths of gold nanorods (GNRs) through the use of NaNO2 as the oxidant. The effects of the concentrations of NaNO2, NH4Br and HCl on the reaction kinetics were investigated separately. To prepare GNRs with desired LLSPR wavelengths, equations were derived and were proved to be able to guide the tailoring of the LLSPR wavelengths through carefully tuning either the amount of NaNO2 or the reaction time. TEM characterizations performed on two representative sets of GNRs show that the GNRs obtained exhibited shortened lengths but unchanged diameter with goodmonodispersity. In particular, GNRs with targeted LLSPR at 800 nm, 750 nm, 700 nm and 650 nm were successfully synthesized with relative errors of only 1% similar to 5%. This method shall promote more applications of GNRs and may advance the synthesis of other metal nanoparticles.
Seedless Synthesis of Gold Nanorods with Narrow Absorption Using Binary Surfactant Mixture

Abstract:A seedless synthetic method was developed for the preparation of high-quality gold nanorods (AuNRs) using binary surfactant mixture containing hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium oleate (NaOL). The morphologies, optical properties and photothermal performances were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and infrared thermal imaging system. The results indicate that uniform AuNRs can be obtained with a NaOL concentration between 8.21-11.5 mmol/L, and their longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength can be tuned from 650 nm to 1150 nm. The AuNRs prepared with this method exhibited narrow LSPR peak,especially in the second near infrared-II region (NIR-II, lambda>1000 nm). Under the irradiation of 1064 nm laser,the temperature of AuNRs solution can increase to 67 degrees C,with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 31.5%. The AuNRs also exhibited excellent photothermal stability under laser irradiation,which can be useful for photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy in the second near-infrared region.

Abstract:Gold nanorods with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can be chemically synthesized. We systematically investigated the effects of reaction parameters and centrifugation on the fine tuning of the rod dimension in scale-up production (80–100 mL). Nanorods of absorption bands from 600–1050 nm were fabricated with precise control of the aspect ratio (AR) from 1.5 to 8.9. Although all chemicals are important in directing the nanostructure, silver ion concentration and seed/Au 3+ ratio were the most effective variations to adjust the absorption wavelength. With a single surfactant under the influence of silver nitrate, short nanorods up to AR of 5 were synthesized with corresponding maximum absorption wavelength at 902 nm. To achieve higher aspect ratio with absorption band beyond 1,000 nm, two-surfactant growth solution was sought to further elongate the rod length. Centrifugation speed and times were found to exert significant influences on the final rod dimension, which is important during the purification process. In a relatively large quantity nanorod synthesis, even distribution and sufficient mixing of chemical ingredients play an essential role in determining the yield, uniformity, and stability of the final nanorod formation.

Abstract:Although gold nanorods (GNRs) have been prepared with a wide range of methods for their uses as novel diagnostic and therapeutic agents, the synthesis of monodispersed GNRs with high yields and size tunability still requires further improvements. We report on a simple one-pot method for preparing highly monodispersed GNRs using phenols (e.g., hydroquinone, 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene, and 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene) as the reducing agent and NaBH4 as the initiating reactant. Fine-tuning of the LSPR peak position of phenols-reduced GNRs from 550 to 1150 nm is accomplished by regulating the silver ion concentrations. The size of GNRs produced via phenols reduction can also be controlled by changing the NaBH4 concentration. By systematically optimizing the concentrations of the reagents involved in the one-pot synthesis of GNRs, the yield (in many cases exceeding 90%) is significantly higher than that prepared with the commonly used reductant (e.g., ascorbic acid). The improved efficiency and controllability cut down the cost and time involved in GNRs production.

Abstract:Although gold nanorods capped with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) have been prepared through the seed-mediated method for their use in diagnostics and therapeutics, the toxicity of AuNRs@CTAB limits their practical applications in the biomedical field. In this work, the synthesis and tuning of gold nanorods at very low concentrations of CTAB (as low as 0.008 M) was successfully achieved by using the seed-mediated method. Furthermore, we managed to optimize the growth conditions by changing the amount of seeds, AgNO3, and/or HCl. At low CTAB concentrations, gold nanorods with tunable size and aspect ratio, high monodispersity, and high purity were obtained and studied by UV–vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Mie–Gans theoretical calculations. This work revealed a method of nanoparticle growth that may be extended to synthesize other nanomaterials such as Ag, Cu, Pd, and Pt at such low CTAB concentrations.

Abstract:A new seed-mediated growth technique for synthesizing gold nanorods (NRs) by using H2O2 as the weak reducer in the presence of a binary surfactant mixture is reported. Gold NRs prepared at different amounts of H2O2 and the gold seeds solution were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and visible–near infrared spectroscopy. Gold NRs with tunable aspect ratio from 4.5 to 7 can be obtained and the corresponding longitudinal plasmonic wavelength of the produced gold NRs are tunable from 810 to 1140 nm. This method provides a new pathway for synthesis of gold NRs with a wide range of longitudinal plasmonic peaks, which have potential applications in optoelectronics and biomedicine.

Abstract:The template method and sol-gel technique were used for the preparation of gold nanorod-silica core-shell (GNR@SiO2 ) nanocomposites.The controllable synthesis, spectroscopic properties, cytotoxicity and cell imaging of these nanocomposites were discussed by using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, transmission e-lectron microscopy, confocal microscopy and other characterized measurements .The results show that, by con-trol of the reaction time, the thickness of silica shell can be facilely tuned in the regime of 20-30 nm; the colloidal stability of gold nanorods has been greatly improved , and their cell cytotoxicities are significantly de-creased due to the presence of the silica shell .In addition, fluorescent probes can be easily attached on the silica shell by post chemical reactions .As formed fluorescent core-shell nanocomposites can be easily captured by cells through endocytosis pathway , which is useful for the optical imaging .Therefore, these nanoparticle composites have a great potential in fields of biosensors , cell imaging and photothermal therapy .

Abstract:Gold nanorod has been widely used in various fields due to the tunable anisotropic localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) property. Facile preparation of gold nanorod with a tunable SPR wavelength extending to near infrared window, and at the same time a relatively small particle size for facilitating applications in especially the biomedicall field is of great value but still much challenged. In this work, a new reducing agent, which is 1,6-dihydroxynaphthalene, is proposed for the synthesis of gold nanorod. Result show that gold nanorod with a good monodispersity, a high shape yield, a maximum SPR wavelength of 1200 nm, and especially a small diameter of around 10 nm can be acquired simultaneously. In terms of spectral and size controls, by respectively varying the amount of experimental parameters including silver ion, reducing agent and gold seed, not only a good linear correlation is acquired corresponding to the SPR wavelength ranged from around 600 nm to 1200 nm, but a regular change on the particle diameter from 10.5 nm to 7.5 nm is shown. The structural and morphological evolutions of the particle for each changed parameter are carefully studied and insights into the growth mechanism are also provided based on the detailed revelation of partilce evolution at the specific stage of growth process.

Abstract:The Optical nonlinearities and optical limiting (OL) properties of Sol-gel solidified gold nanorods were investigated by using Z-scan technique and OL measurement, respectively, with nanosecond pulses at 532nm. The experimental results show that their strong nonlinear optical performances depend on the sizes of nanorods. The surface plasmon absorption is the main mechanism.
Revisiting the Plasmon Radiation Damping of Gold Nanorods

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles have been utilized for a vast amount of optical applications. For the applications that used metal nanoparticles as nanosensors and optical labeling, larger radiation damping is preferred (higher optical signal). To get a deeper knowledge about the radiation damping of noble metal nanoparticles, we used gold nanorods with different geometry factors (aspect ratios) as the model system to study. We investigated theoretically how the radiation damping of a nanorod depends on the material, and shape of the particle. Surprisingly, a simple analytical equation describes radiation damping very accurately and allow to disentangle the maximal radiation damping parameter for gold nanorod with resonance energy E_res around 1.81 eV (685 nm). We found very good agreement with theoretical predictions and experimental data obtained by single-particle spectroscopy. Our results and approaches may pave the way for designing and optimizing gold nanostructure with higher optical signal and better sensing performance.

Abstract:We have demonstrated glutathione- and cysteine-induced transverse overgrowth on gold nanorods. In aqueous solutions, glutathione and cysteine are preferentially bound to the ends of gold nanorods that are stabilized by a cationic surfactant bilayer. This preferential end binding blocks the growth of the nanorods in the longitudinal direction completely and allows for the growth only in the transverse direction. As a result, the diameters of the nanorods become larger and larger while their lengths remain unchanged, as more and more gold precursor is supplied. In addition, the shape of the nanorods undergoes a gradual change from rods, peanuts, and truncated octahedra to faceted spheres during overgrowth. We believe that this transverse overgrowth provides an alternative means for tailoring the longitudinal plasmon wavelengths and extinction cross sections of gold nanoparticles and will therefore facilitate their use in optics, optoelectronics, and biotechnology.
Synthesis of Small Gold Nanorods and Their Subsequent Functionalization with Hairpin Single Stranded DNA

Abstract:Small gold nanorods have a significantly large absorption/scattering ratio and are especially beneficial in exploiting photothermal effects, for example in photothermal therapy and remote drug release. This work systematically investigates the influence of growth conditions on the size, growth yield, and stability of small gold nanorods. The silver-assisted seed-mediated growth method was optimized to synthesize stable small gold nanorods with a high growth yield (>85%). Further study on the influence of silver ions on the growth facilitates the growth of small gold nanorods with tunable longitudinal surface plasmon resonance from 613 to 912 nm, with average dimensions of 13–25 nm in length and 5–6 nm in diameter. Moreover, the small gold nanorods were successfully functionalized with thiol-modified hairpin oligonucleotides (hpDNA) labeled with Cy5. Fluorescence intensity measurements show an increase in the presence of target DNA and an enhanced signal/background ratio when the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance of small gold nanorods overlaps with the excitation and emission wavelength of Cy5. This coincides with a reduced fluorescence lifetime of Cy5 in the hairpin structure, indicating surface plasmon resonance-enhanced energy transfer to the small gold nanorods. This study may provide insight on the synthesis and functionalization of small gold nanorods in biomedical sensing and therapy.

Thermal stability of gold nanorods in an aqueous solution

Abstract:The thermal stability of the gold nanorods in an aqueous solution was investigated by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and TEM technique. It was found that the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance absorption of the gold nanorods gradually moved to a shorter wavelength at high temperature, suggesting the decrease of the aspect ratio. The decrease of the aspect ratio could be attributed to the increase of the diameter and the decrease of the length, which was associated with Ostwald ripening in the solution. This shape deformation could be inhibited by reducing the concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or coating the surface of gold nanorods with poly(sodium styrenesulfonate). The results are very important to the future applications of the gold nanorods where they have to be heated to high temperature without change of their optical properties.

Abstract:A gold nanorods sol has been prepared by electrolysis of gold with rodlike micelles as the shape-inducing templates. There is evidence that, instead of at the interfacial region of the cathodic surface during electrolysis, the formation of gold nanorods occured in the bulk electrolyzed solution during storage after the electrolysis. The total concentration of nanoparticles in the resulted sol was found to be dependent on the surface state of the Pt cathode, as well as the ultrasonication treatment during electrolysis.

Abstract:The synthesis of noble metal nanostructures with adjustable optical properties is essential due to their potential applications in various fields such as imaging, (bio) sensors, and catalysis. In this study, Au@Ag core-shell nanorods were synthesized with tunable optical properties. The synthesis process includes a two-stage approach: first, gold nanorods were synthesized through seed-mediated growth, and in the second stage, these gold nanorods were used as seeds to synthesize Au@Ag core-shell nanorods through the silver deposition process. Tunable core-shell nanorods were produced by changing the concentration of silver ions, reducing agent, stabilizing agent, seeds, and buffer as well as pH and the reaction time. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images demonstrated the formation of the Au@Ag core-shell nanorod structure. In addition, UV-visible spectroscopy revealed the peak height and its shift towards shorter wavelengths, demonstrating the tunable optical properties of the synthesized nanorods. Overall, in this study, we demonstrated the synthesis of Au@Ag core-shell nanorods with adjustable plasmonic optical properties that could be changed by precisely controlling the thickness of the silver shell on the surface of the gold core.

Abstract:We report a modified synthesis route of colloidal gold nanorods (AuNRs) by combining the thermal re-shaping treatment and bi-surfactant modification using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium oleate (NaOL). Aspect ratios down to 1.3 ± 0.1 can be achieved in addition to good monodispersity, uniformity, and chemical stability of the materials. Furthermore, without needing post-treatment, metal ions directly interact with the AuNRs efficiently, allowing rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions such as Pb2+ and Cu2+ with a low concentration down to 2.5 μM. The detection performance in terms of selectivity, sensitivity and stability is systematically evaluated. The AuNRs with tunable aspect ratios as well as chemical stability have potential in surface-plasmon-based applications such as biochemical sensing, biochemical imaging, medical diagnostics, and cancer therapy.

Abstract:In recent years, the research on gold nanoparticles has made great progress. Gold nanoparticles with different morphologies have good application prospects in drug delivery and tumor treatment. Some gold nanoparticles have entered the stage of clinical trials. Gold nanorods have become important research objects due to their special optical properties and photothermal treatment potential. In this paper, the optical properties and main applications of gold nanorods were reviewed. Gold nanorods have good surface modifiable properties and can be modified through surface ligand exchange to improve their biocompatibility. The photothermal properties of gold nanorods can be improved by adjusting the aspect ratio to adjust the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak to achieve near-infrared light excitation. These characteristics make gold nanorods show good application prospects in the detection of biological macromolecules, real-time imaging in vivo, and early diagnosis and treatment of tumors. Using gold nanorods as a carrier and modified with different targeting molecules can improve the targeting of its drug delivery system and reduce damage to normal cells, so as to realize the combined application of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy, and finally achieve a better therapeutic effect. Combining gold nanorods with stem cells or certain specific biomolecules can form a hybrid gold nanorod system which provides new ideas for further improving the efficiency of tumor treatment.
Size-Tunable Synthesis of High-Quality Gold Nanorods under Basic Conditions by Using H2o2 As the Reducing Agent

Abstract:We report a novel method for wet synthesis of gold nanorods (GNRs) with H2O2 as the reducing agent. Our method filled the gap of synthesizing GNRs under basic conditions through a seed-mediated method. The XRD data and HRTEM image show that GNRs have face-centered cubic structures and the growth of GNRs is along the [001] direction. Moreover, we investigated the impacts on GNR synthesis through changing the experimental parameters, including the added amounts of NaOH, the H2O2/Au3+ ratio, and the concentration of AgNO3, by UV-Vis spectroscopy and TEM. It is found that the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance peak of GNRs can be easily tuned and the maximum of 981 nm can be achieved. The GNRs prepared by our method have well-controlled morphology, high purity and improved monodispersity. The quality of GNRs is no longer sensitive to the concentration of the reducing agent, and excellent GNRs can be prepared even when the H2O2/Au3+ ratio is adjusted to 300 : 1. This new GNR preparation method provides an approach to obtain high-quality GNRs with different sizes, which is expected to find wide applications in various fields, especially those requiring basic conditions.
