Abstract:Conventional couplers including the 2 x 2 directional coupler and the self-imaging multimode interference coupler always produce a 90 degrees coupling phase to yield complementary power transfer functions when the relative phase of the two input fields changes. For applications in coupled-cavity lasers, a 2 x 2 half-wave optical coupler with a 180 degrees coupling phase is required in order to produce synchronous output power for achieving high single-mode selectivity. We present the designs and optimization of 2 x 2 half-wave couplers, including a three-waveguide directional coupler and a nonimaging multimode interference coupler.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:A new dual-bandpass 180° hybrid coupler, based on four properly designed shorted-stub loaded stepped-impedance resonators, is proposed in this paper. In order to construct the collaboratively designed coupler/filter, the resonators are coupled magnetically and electrically with each other through three shorted stubs and an open coupled line, respectively. According to the approach of filter synthesis and the derived design equations, the characteristic admittances and electrical lengths of the resonators and coupling sections are determined to achieve the desired resonant frequencies, external Q factors, and internal coupling coefficients for dual passbands. A design procedure is provided. The design flexibilities for ratios of central frequencies and achievable bandwidths are explored. The component shows both filtering and power dividing functions within two specific passbands, whose good performances are demonstrated by the simulated and measured results. The two second-order passbands of a fabricated prototype are located at 2.42 and 5.84 GHz, with 4.6% and 5.2% bandwidths, respectively. The insertion losses are 1.0 and 1.4 dB over 3-dB power division. The isolations are better than 23.5 and 32.8 dB. In both the in-phase and out-of-phase responses, the in-band amplitude and phase imbalances are always within -1.6-0.6 dB and -6.5°-9.5°, respectively.

Abstract:A multilayer dual-band coupler, based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) folded substrate integrated waveguide (FSIW) transmission line (TL), is proposed and investigated. The characterization of the CRLH FSIW and the coupling method are performed to realize a 3 dB coupler with compact size. For verification, a dual-band coupler operating at 2.4 GHz/3.8 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured. The simulated and measured results are shown reasonable agreements.

Abstract:Directional couplers (DCs) are the basic elements for constructing various silicon photonic devices, including Mach– Zehnder switches (MZSs). Here, we propose a novel 2×2 bent directional couplers based on Bézier curves designed with an efficient semi-inverse design method. Two DCs were designed to operate at center wavelengths of 1.55 μm and 2 μm, with splitting ratios maintained between 45 to 55% over broad bandwidths of 130 nm and 160 nm respectively, and excess losses < 0.05 dB. The present 1.55/2 μm DCs also have ultra-compact footprints of 16×1.8/24×2.5 μm2, which are much smaller than conventional DCs. The fabricated DCs show good fabrication tolerance of ±10 nm waveguide width deviation. The present bent DCs are then used for realizing thermo-optic MZSs for the 1.55/2 μm wavelength-bands, which show a bandwidth of >90 nm for achieving low excess losses of <0.3 dB and high extinction ratios of ∼18/20 dB.

Abstract:A unidirectional dual-wavelength-band grating coupler with one-dimensional (1D) subwavelength structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Inverse optimization method is used for the design and the grating coupler fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator chip can achieve efficient fiber-chip coupling simultaneously in the O-band and the L-band. The peak coupling efficiencies in the two bands are measured to be 19.7% and 19.5% with 3-dB bandwidths of 27 and 38-nm, respectively.

Abstract:A novel design of monolithically integrated diplexers and triplexers for fiber-to-the-home applications is presented. A bilevel etched asymmetrical 2 x 2 optical coupler is analyzed for efficient couplings of both upstream and downstream signals. The design of the diplexer is extended to a triplexer by adding an etched diffraction grating as an additional downstream demultiplexing element. The total size of the integrated diplexer and triplexer is smaller than 500 microm x 500 microm.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.
Efficient Directional Coupler Based on Plasmonic Waveguide for Photonic Integrated Circuits

Abstract:Two asymmetric directional couplers, including the dielectric-hybrid plasmonic coupler and the dielectric-metal insulator-metal plasmonic coupler, are investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency and can be integrated into the silicon based platform. The applications of these hybrid couplers include the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and efficient excitation of plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes. Besides, a symmetric directional coupler based on silver nanowires is also demonstrated.

Abstract:A new semiconductor laser structure with digitally switchable wavelength is proposed. The device comprises two coupled c. avities with different optical path lengths, which form V-shaped branches with a reflective 2x2 half-wave optical coupler at the closed end. The reflective 2x2 coupler is designed to have a pi-phase difference between crosscoupling and self-coupling so as to produce synchronous power transfer functions. High single-mode selectivity is achieved by optimizing the coupling coefficient. The switchable wavelength range is greatly increased by using Vernier effect. Using deep-etched trenches as partial reflectors, additional waveguide branch structures are used outside the laser cavities to form a complete Mach-Zehnder interferometer, allowing space switching, variable attenuation, or high speed modulation to be realized simultaneously. Abstract:This paper presents an optical waveguide isolator based on two-mode interference (TMI) couplers, by utilizing the magneto-optical nonreciprocal phase shift (NPS). The operating principle of this device is to utilize the difference between the nonreciprocal phase shifts of the two lowest-order modes. A two-dimensional (2D) semi-vectorial finite difference method is used to calculate the difference between the nonreciprocal phase shifts of the two lowest-order modes and optimize the parameters. The proposed device may play an important role in integrated optical devices and optical communication systems.

Abstract:The interlayer coupler is one of the critical building blocks for optical interconnect based on multilayer photonic integration to realize light coupling between stacked optical waveguides. However, commonly used coupling strategies, such as evanescent field coupling, usually require a close distance, which could cause undesired interlayer crosstalk. This work presents a novel interlayer slope waveguide coupler based on a multilayer chalcogenide glass photonic platform, enabling light to be directly guided from one layer to another with a large interlayer gap (1 µm), a small footprint (6 × 1 × 0.8 µm3), low propagation loss (0.2 dB at 1520 nm), low device processing temperature, and a high bandwidth, similar to that in a straight waveguide. The proposed interlayer slope waveguide coupler could further promote the development of advanced multilayer integration in 3D optical communications systems.

Abstract:Efficient coupling between on-chip sources and cavities has played a critical role in the widespread adoption of silicon photonics. Despite the importance of this basic functionality, there are nevertheless no standard designs to simultaneously control coupling between multiple modes in a compact resonator and a single waveguide. We propose a large-scale adjoint optimization approach to design wavelength-scale waveguide--cavity couplers operating over tunable and broad frequency bands. We demonstrate couplers that lead to critical coupling between multi-ring cavities and a single waveguide at up to three widely separated wavelengths, spanning the $560$--$1500$~nm range critical for on-chip nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:We present both theoretical and experimental results of an ultracompact waveguide coupler that is capable of highly efficient coupling of light from strip waveguides to slot waveguides, and vice versa. By optimizing the geometrical parameters, it is possible to achieve extremely low-loss coupling. A coupling efficiency of 97% has been obtained experimentally while keeping the overall size down to the range below 10 mu m. Further analysis shows that the proposed coupler has relatively high tolerance to fabrication errors and is wavelength insensitive. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-mode (de)multiplexer utilizing the coupling between tapered waveguides and a wide multimode waveguide is designed and experimentally demonstrated. The tapered waveguides are composed of a reverse-tapered waveguide and a narrow tapered waveguide. The proposed mode (de)multiplexer is fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer in a commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS-compatible process. The qualitative functionality of the device is mainly determined by the width of the large end of the reverse-tapered waveguide. Experimental results show that the demultiplexing crosstalk of a pair of tapered-coupler-based two-mode (de)multiplexers is lower than -13.5 dB within a bandwidth from 1528 nm to 1570 nm and less than -16.6 dB from 1540 nm to 1560 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a widely tunable coupled-cavity semiconductor laser based on a novel half-wave bow-tie coupler. The laser comprises two resonate cavities connected through the bow-tie coupler consisting of two back-to-back corner reflectors connected with a short waveguide, which produces a half-wave cross-coupling phase with an optimum coupling coefficient for achieving high mode selectivity. No complex grating or multiple epitaxial growth is needed. By tuning a single electrode at a fixed temperature, 29.6 nm wavelength tuning covering 38 channels with 100 GHz frequency spacing is achieved experimentally, with a side-mode suppression ratio of over 35 dB.

Abstract:A coupler is proposed to interface a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLPW) with a silicon photonic slab waveguide. The HDLPW is firstly designed and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation distance. The designed coupler is inspired from the taper configuration and numerically modeled through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The results demonstrate that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon photonic slab waveguide into the dielectric slot of area 50×200nm2 in the HDLPW. The transmission attained through the coupler with a compact size of 400nm is found to be as high as 80% (1dB). Further, the planar nature of taper configuration makes the coupler easy to fabricate using the state-of-the-art CMOS facilities. The proposed coupler is useful in enabling the integration between photonic and hybrid plasmonic waveguides and thus realizing on-chip hybrid integrated circuits.
