Abstract:Automatic trajectory tracking control is a significant task during tunnel excavation,while the tunnel boring machine is working.The actual excavation path is not always consistent with the design axis.Tasks of steering and posture adjustment of open-type hard rock tunnel boring machine can be achieved by properly adjusting the hydraulic pressure of thrust cylinders.The position and posture rectification kinematics and dynamics models of TBM have been established based on practical investigation.Rather severe parametric uncertainties and uncertain nonlinearities exist in the dynamic model.An adaptive robust control strategy is adopted to achieve precise position and posture trajectory tracking control.Simulation results are obtained to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive robust controller.

Abstract:As labor shortages and safety regulations become more prominent, the need for human-in-the-loop automation of excavators is increasing. To meet this demand, we have developed a comprehensive modeling method for the excavator arm using nonlinear optimization approaches, including a simplified model that maps the task space to the joint space, as well as an equivalent model that maps the joint space to the actuator space. These models were then used to build a feedforward-PID joint velocity controller and a joint trajectory controller combined with position feedback, which forms the core of our proposed semi-automatic control system for the excavator arm. Our deployment scheme is simple and efficient, and has been deployed on two excavators of different makes and sizes. Experiments show that our deployment scheme performs well on both excavators, with an average error of 0.05 rad/s for the velocity controller and less than 5 cm for the trajectory controller. Using our semi-automatic system, we have completed demonstration experiments for precise digging and grading operations. A demonstration video can be found at https://youtu.be/N6I0WZGSF68.

Abstract:This paper studies the control system of self-excavated excavator, which is based on the working device of the small type loader. Firstly, the kinematics model of the working device is established by D-H method, so that the trajectory planning of the vehicle speed, boom oil cylinder and bucket oil cylinder drive equation is obtained. Combined with the advantages of PID control and fuzzy control, the fuzzy adaptive PID controller of the actuator is designed. Finally, the simulation model of the hydraulic system position controller is built in Simulink. The simulation results show that the displacement error of the actuator is within 0.5mm.

Abstract:The roboticized model of boom-type roadheader was established and roadheader Jacobian matrix was presented.Cutting resistance forces focused on the cutting head were transformed into roadheader generalized forces and the transform relation of drive velocity and forces between the joint and the manipulator were deduced.Matlab M documents had been prepared to simulate the joint velocity and drive force.The simulation result shows that the dynamics model is solid and provides kinematics and dynamics basis for roadheader control.

Abstract:Boom-type roadheader is the most widely used equipment in the fully mechanized excavation face of coal mine. Under complicated operation conditions of underground coal mine, multibody large-scale displacement phenomenon of roadheader will occur during cutting process. Specifically, the position and attitude of the body are changing continuously, and radial runout phenomenon of the cutting arm will take place, which will seriously reduce the overall stability of roadheader and drivage efficiency of the roadway. Focused on the vertical cutting condition, the coupling dynamical model of position and attitude of the body is established based on Lagrange equation. Combined with the calculated cutting load, the dynamical model is solved through Simulink simulation method, and the solving results are analysed under different influence factors. Consequently, the response regularities of position and attitude of the body under influence of different factors are obtained. In the similar way, the dynamical model of radial runout quantity of the cutting arm is established, and the dynamic response of radial runout of the cutting arm during vertical cutting process is obtained as well. Finally, the simulation analysis results are validated through field experiments. The research work of this paper provides useful theoretical basis for deviation rectification control of the multibody structures of roadheader, fills the vacancy of theoretical study in this aspect, and contributes to improving the dynamics theory of mining machinery.

Abstract:In order to monitor and control cutting section automatically,the boom-type roadheader was simplified as roboticized model.By using the parallel coordinates system,roadheader link coordinates system and its work coordinates system were established,and its boom posture and transformation relation relative to the tunnel coordinates system were described through coordinates transformation matrix.Based on closed loop size chain,roadheader carriage positioning and cutting header posture localization were achieved in the operation space.On the base of analysis boom kinematics,the forward and inverse problem of tunneling operation control were discussed,and the simulation and confirmation were carried on.The analysis indicates that the forward problem is the foundation of monitoring cutting section,and the inverse problem may instruct tunneling operation and achieve automatic control.

Abstract:This paper is to study on a novel recovery and release hydraulic hybrid system for excavators (HHE). The HHE uses hydraulic accumulators to recover the potential energy of the boom, the kinetic energy of the swing motor and the overflow hydraulic energy of the excavator’s main relief. The recovered energy is then utilized through a variable hydraulic motor as assistant power of the engine. The key issue of the HHE is that the operation of the boom must be similar to the conventional one about the sensing of the driver and the system must achieve higher efficiency and save more energy when comparing with the conventional system. In order to improve the recovery efficiency and while controlling the boom velocity with the similar operation, one design concept named “microcut” is proposed. When the boom drops down fast, a proportional valve is used to control the boom. While the boom goes down slowly, the recovery system is cut off. Then, the multi-way valve of the original system works to ensure good handling. An experimental prototype is designed and built in a 21-tons excavator. A 16% fuel-saving effect is obtained by weighing engine’s fuel consumption with the same amount of work, under conditions of the similar operation and higher efficiency compared with the conventional excavator.

Abstract:Roadheader is the core equipment of roadway excavation. Affected by the sudden change of cutting load and complex roadway floor conditions, the position pose of the roadheader is very prone to deviation. Usually, the roadheader's position pose deviation is corrected by controlling its supporting and tracking unit. However, this will greatly reduce the roadway excavation efficiency in case of a small position pose deviation. Therefore, a new scheme for the automatic compensation of position pose deviation is proposed by controlling the cutting boom motion. Firstly, the kinematics model of cutting boom is established, and the pitch and yaw position pose deviation compensation models are constructed. To improve the control accuracy of cutting boom motion, the reduced-order active disturbance rejection controller is designed. Then, the compensation control experiments of pitch and yaw position pose deviation are carried out based on the position pose compensation experiment system. The results show that the maximum errors of cutting trajectory after compensation meet the requirements of roadway cross-section quality, proving the effectiveness of the proposed position pose compensation control scheme.

Abstract:The boom-type roadheader plays a crucial role in coal mining. However, conducting the real-time monitoring of the mechanical performance and comprehensive adaptive cutting in the dynamic cutting process are challenging. To address these issues, a digital twin system that integrates the elements of "shape, performance, and control" for roadheaders is presented in this paper. The system comprises three components: physical space, service space, and twin space. The service space forms the core of the entire system. Within this space, twin models and control models are created using numerical simulation, artificial intelligence and multi-source data fusion technology. These models serve the purpose of predicting the roadheader's mechanical performance and controlling the swing speed of the cutting arm. The physical space is built using technologies such as robot kinematics, electrical systems, hydraulic transmission, and other relevant techniques. This approach facilitates the transmission of multi-sensor data to twin models. The control model then manages the roadheader's function based on the output signals from the control model. The twin space is constructed utilizing physical rendering engines, databases, and 3D modelling tools. This space visualizes and stores the movement, performance, and control parameters of the roadheader. The results demonstrate that the average absolute error between the measured data from the test's three position strain gauges and the predicted data from the twin system is 10.38 MPa. Furthermore, the twin system achieves an average update interval of 0.34 s, allowing real-time stress monitoring of the structural components of the roadheader and preventing damage caused by overload. The proposed control model enables adaptive adjustment of the swing speed of the cutting arm in approximately 0.3 s. This improvement significantly enhances the adaptive cutting capabilities of roadheaders when dealing with complex coal and rock formations.

Abstract:The present study is focused on developing a method for controlling the pose and trajectory of a shield tunneling machine (STM) applied in complicated stratum. Lacking method to determine target motions of thrust cylinders and suitable electro-hydraulic control system are major restrictions for the STM to realize automatic pose control. To overcome these bottlenecks, a mathematical method for determining the target motions of thrust cylinders is proposed based on kinematic analysis of the thrust mechanism. With this method, target motions of thrust cylinders when the STM excavates along any specific curves can be obtained and used as the input signal of the pose control system. A multi-cylinder control system is proposed based on master/slave control strategy to control the length of each kinematic chain in order to adjust the pose of the thrust mechanism. Experiments are carried out to evaluate the performances of this control system. The experimental results verify that the proposed pose control system is effective in controlling the pose and trajectory of the shield machine no matter it advances along a straight or a curved tunnel axis. Considering the complex loads during the experiments, the proposed system has great potential for applying in practical tunnel construction.

Abstract:A cantilever roadheader is the main tunneling equipment for underground coal mine roadways. The key to the safe, efficient and intelligent development of coal enterprises is to achieve the autonomous cutting and intelligent control of the cantilever roadheader. In order to realize the automatic cutting shaping control of a large-section coal roadway, the path planning and control method of secondary automatic cutting of a cantilever roadheader were studied. The Wangjialing 12307 belt roadway was used as the engineering background, the vertical displacement law of the roadway roof under different cutting paths was simulated with the FLAC 3D software, the reasonable cutting path was determined according to the actual situation, and the underground industrial test was carried out. The simplified model and spatial position and attitude coordinate system of the roadheader were established, the kinematics of the roadheader was analyzed, and the position and attitude expression of the cutting head center in the roadway coordinate system was obtained. The simplified model of the cutting head was established, the position expression of the pick in the roadway coordinate system was derived, the position coordinate of the inflection point and the cutting step distance were determined according to the relationship between the cutting head and the roadway boundary, and the cutting path control flow was designed. Finally, the reliability of the cutting path control method was verified with a MATLAB simulation. The research works provide a theoretical foundation for path planning and control to realize "secondary autonomous cutting of cantilever roadheader".

Abstract:A multiparameter control strategy and method for the cutting arm of a roadheader is proposed through the operation analysis of roadheader. The method can address the problems of low intelligence and low cutting efficiency faced by the roadheader in the cutting process. The control strategy is divided into two parts: the cutting load identification part and the swing speed control part. The former part is designed using a backpropagation neural network that is optimized by an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm. The latter part is optimally designed using a fuzzy PID controller with improved simulated annealing particle swarm optimization. The simulation analysis in SIMULINK showed that the response time was reduced, proving the robustness of the method. In addition, experimental studies verified the good control effect of the method under different cutting states. The proposed method uses multiparameter to intelligently change the swing speed, providing a theoretical and practical basis for the realization of intelligent and unmanned cutting of roadheader.

Abstract:As the advances in computer control technology keep emerging, robotic hydraulic excavator becomes imperative. It can improve excavation accuracy and greatly reduce the operator's labor intensity. The 12-ton backhoe bucket excavator has been utilized in this research work where this type of excavator is commonly used in engineering work. The kinematics model of operation device (boom, arm, bucket, and swing) in excavator is established in both Denavit-Hartenberg coordinates for easy programming and geometric space for avoiding blind spot. The control approach is based on trajectory tracing method with displacements and velocities feedbacks. The trajectory planning and auto dig programis written by Visual C++. By setting the bucket teeth's trajectory, the program can automatically plan the velocity and acceleration of each hydraulic cylinder and motor. The results are displayed through a 3D entity simulation environment which can present real-time movements of excavator kinematics. Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine and skeletal animation are used to give accurate parametric control and feedback. The simulation result shows that a stable linear auto dig can be achieved. The errors between trajectory planning command and simulation model are analyzed.

Abstract:The boom kinematical theory and the body kinematics models of the boom-type roadheader are established,the coordinates of the center point of the cutter and the limit point of the pick are calculated,and the point coordinate values of the tunneling sectional contour are gotten.Combined with the cubic spline function,the sectional contour curve is obtained and the contour-measured hardware and software are designed.The experiment shows the measurement method can achieve the exact real- time measurement and the display for the sectional contour and provides the references to tunneling operation.

Abstract:Considering the actual conditions of the roadway drivage for the tunnel robotic, the law of cutting enveloping surface motion in space does not change along with selection of coordinates, roadheader link coordinates and its work coordinates were established. Combined the spatial location of cutting head cutting enveloping surface with the geometric analysis of its mechanism, the mathematical model of profiling memory cutting between enveloping surface and angular sensors detection data for tunnel robot was built. The influence factors of cutting roadway cross-section shape dimension such as the roadway slope, inclination and link mechanism were described. The relation between the spatial location of enveloping surface and angular displacement was described. The real-time and reliability of the model were verified through simulating the motion path of profiling memory cutting. This approach provides a theoretical foundation for the realization of the real-time monitor and auto control of tunnel robot cutting roadway cross-section.

Abstract:Motion control of truck-mounted concrete pump booms is an important part of concrete construction work. The quality of the boom movement will affect the efficiency and safety of construction operations. To make the boom move quickly and steadily, its hydraulic control system needs to be improved. In this article, we firstly combine independent metering control (IMC) and active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The hydraulic system that controls the boom is meliorated by replacing the traditional proportional directional spool valve with four cartridge flow control valves to realize IMC. Meanwhile, a fuzzy linear ADRC algorithm is proposed for a new IMC hydraulic system where ADRC is linearized and combined with fuzzy logic to achieve better motion control performance of boom sections. According to the results of experiments conducted using all six boom sections, compared with the PID control algorithm, the fuzzy linear active disturbance rejection control (FLADRC) proposed in this article can improve the stability and rapidity of valves controlled by hydraulic cylinders by 10.0% to 66.7% in different working conditions.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. To realize the adaptive swing velocity regulation for the roadheader under different coal and rock impedance, this paper proposes the control strategy based on the cutting state recognition. Firstly, based on the experimental platform, the current and acceleration sensor signals of different coal and rock impedances and swing velocities were measured to construct the cutting state dataset. Secondly, the k-means++ algorithm is used to extract the sudden data that can better reflect the working state. The distance evaluation technology (DET) is proposed for sensitive feature selection and KPCA algorithm is utilized for data fusion to obtain two-dimensional feature vector which can benefit to reducing the input dimension of the state classifier. Simultaneously, an improved whale algorithm is introduced to optimize the RBF neural network (RBFNN) for different cutting status recognition. The test results show that the cutting state identification accuracy of designed RBF classifier can reach 98.8%, which owns higher precision compared with other optimization models. Then, to improve the swing velocity tracking dynamics, the backstepping sliding mode cascade controller is designed and the multi-domain co-simulation showed the superiority of fast response and anti-disturbance. Finally, based on the presented adaptive cutting strategy, the actual experiments under mutational coal rock hardness conditions were conducted. The experimental results showed that the roadheader's swing velocity can be autonomously adjusted within 0.5 s as the external cutting load varies, which demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of the method proposed.

Abstract:In tunnel section forming operations, the boom-type roadheader tracking target trajectory with high precision is greatly significant in avoiding over and under excavation and improving excavation efficiency. However, there exist complex cutting loads, measurement noise, and model uncertainties, seriously degrading the tracking performance of traditional nominal model-based controllers. Hence, this study first fully analyzes the kinematics of all members of the cutting mechanism and establishes its complete multi-body dynamic model using the Lagrange method. Furthermore, a dual extended state observer is designed to estimate the mechanical system's angular velocity and unmodeled disturbances and actuators' uncertain nonlinearities. In particular, introducing a nonlinear filter replaces the traditional first-order filter in dynamic surface technology, overcoming the "explosion of complexity" while attenuating the conservatism of gains tuning. Then, a dual extended state observer-based prescribed performance dynamic surface controller is developed for roadheaders for the first time. Simultaneously, integrating an improved error transformation function into controller design effectively avoids the online computational burden caused by traditional logarithmic operations. Utilizing Lyapunov theory, the cutting system's prescribed transient response and steady-state performance are guaranteed. Finally, the proposed controller's effectiveness is verified by comparative experiments on the roadheader.
