Abstract:In this paper, a tunable single-passband microwave photonic filter with positive and negative taps based on phase modulation and a fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer (FMZI)) is presented, theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. The FMZI as the slicing filter results in a single-bandpass characteristic for the presented filter, and by using phase modulation, a number of negative taps are generated, thus making the baseband resonance suppressed, which is desirable for microwave photonic filter's application. The wavelength spacing of the FMZI can be tuned by employing an optical variable delay line, making the present filter continuously tunable. A tunable single-passband microwave photonic filter without baseband resonance is achieved in the experiment. The present filter shows an extinction ratio of up to ∼20dB and good tuning linearity.

Abstract:A tunable and configurable photonic microwave bandpass filter with negative coefficient is proposed and demonstrated. Based on all-optical mixing in an intensity modulator and a phase modulator, the filter frequency response is related with the frequency of local RF signal (LO) signal and dc bias applied to the intensity modulator. The free spectral range of filter passband can be tuned conveniently by changing the LO frequency. When 8GHz LO signal is applied, an equivalent bandpass filter with null-to-null bandwidth of 8.1 GHz is obtained for a 25km radio-over-fiber link. Meanwhile, by varying the dc bias, the weights and the number of taps can be adjusted to tune the performance of filter. Therefore, a flexible transversal bandpass filter implemented in a radio-over-fiber link is realized along with the tunability and reconfiguration. Copyright 2006 IEICE.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable multi-tap microwave photonic filter (MPF) with complex coefficients. It is based on addition of carrier suppressed single sideband (CS-SSB) signal and phase-controllable optical carrier. Instead of using the technique of optical filtering, the CS-SSB signal is generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) in our scheme. Frequency tuning of the filter is achieved by changing the phase of the optical carrier, which can be controlled by a variable optical delay line (VDL). The proposed structure features high flexibility and wideband RF response, and the experimental results demonstrate that it can be tuned continuously over one free spectral range (FSR) without changing the spectral shape of the filter.

Abstract:An all-optical microwave bandpass filter employing air-core photonic bandgap fiber (PBGF) based loop mirror is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A segment of 20 m air-core PBGF is used in the experiment. The frequency response with negative coefficient is realized and can be tuned by changing the incident optical wavelength because of the wavelength-dependent high-birefringence of PBGF. When the input wavelength varies from 1566 nm to 1584 nm, the differential group delay (DGD) of PBGF changes from 30ps to 110 ps, therefore, the free-spectral range (FSR) of the proposed filter changes correspondingly from 33 GHz to 9.6 GHz

Abstract:We propose a high carrier suppression double sideband modulation technique using a Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and an integrated polarization state rotation filter (PSRF), which is designed to improve the carrier suppression ratio. With the functions of MZM and PSRF, about 30dB carrier suppression ratio relative to first-order sidebands is demonstrated. Moreover, we demonstrate the optical generation of microwave/millimeter-wave signals by beating the carrier suppressed double sideband (DSB-SC) lightwave signals. The experimental results show that the improvement of carrier suppression ratio with PSRF can effectively cancel the modulating RF frequency component. A tunable and high purity microwave signal, which is limited by the bandwidth of MZM and photodetector (PD), is obtained, and it does not suffer from obvious phase noise degradation with 25km transmission.

Abstract:A four-tap microwave photonic filter with tunable center frequency and reconfigurable transfer function is proposed.It is based on two Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) cascaded with a variable optical coupler (OC) in between. By simultaneously adjusting the variable optical delay line incorporated in each MZI, center frequency of the filter can be tuned continuously. Reconfiguration of the filter is achieved by changing the coupling ratio of the variable OC. Experimental result demonstrates a tunable four-tap filter with sidelobe suppression in excess of 25 dB. Abstract:A simple and tunable single-hand pass microwave photonic filter of adjustable shape is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter is based on multiple sources (spectrum-sliced by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer) and two cascaded incoherent optical structures, namely, a dispersion medium of 50-km single-mode fiber and a fiber ring delay line. In the experimental range from 1.0 to 3.8 GHz, a discretely tunable single-hand pass filter with a high Q-factor or a flat-top response is achieved by carefully matching the transfer functions of the two individual optical structures.

Abstract:A novel tunable and reconfigurable microwave photonic filter based on two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) and a dispersive medium is presented, theoretically discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A single-wavelength laser diode (LD) and the first MZM are used to obtain a multi-wavelength optical source, and the second MZM is modulated with the signal to be processed. The dispersive medium provides the time delay for different taps, since different wavelength experiences different time delay, when it travels in the optical fiber. By adjusting the modulation frequency and the bias voltage on the first MZM, the wavelength spacing and the relative amplitude of the optical tones after the first MZM can be changed, thus making the filter tunable and reconfigurable. The presented microwave photonic filter has been implemented in the experiment. The experimental results agree well with the simulation results, and show that the present microwave photonic filter has good tunability and reconfigurability. The mainlobe-to-sidelobe ratio (MSR) of around 25dB is achieved for the presented filter in the experiment.

Abstract:A tunable high-Q Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coupled micro-ring resonator (MRR) with a large free-spectra range (FSR) is demonstrated by introducing multimode waveguides assisted with modified Euler curve, both phase and coupling coefficient can be tuned. Utilization of the silicon micro-ring enables a microwave photonic band-pass filter with a 3-dB bandwidth tuned from 150 MHz to 2 GHz, and central frequency thermally tuned from 500 MHz to 40 GHz.

Abstract:A simple all-optical coherence-free microwave notch filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter with switchable passbands is based on a single-wavelength optical source and phase-intensity hybrid modulation scheme. The DC bias voltage applied to the Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator can be adjusted to switch signs of the tap coefficients, which affect the baseband response. Both lowpass and bandpass filtering responses are observed in the experiment and agree well with the simulated results.

Abstract:In conventional approaches to realizing microwave photonic filters (MPFs) with rectangular response, both positive and negative coefficients should be included in the systems, which is a difficulty in incoherent MPFs. Electrical or optical ways to realize the MPFs with bipolar taps, such as those using balanced detectors or based on two opposite modulation slopes of dual-input Mach-Zehnder modulators, usually involve more components compared with the MPFs with unipolar taps. In this Letter, a design of MPFs with rectangular response using all positive coefficients is proposed. There is only one optical link as well as one photodetector utilized in the approach, which largely simplifies the filter structure. Experimental demonstrations of 55-positive-tap MPFs with different passbands are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.

Abstract:We demonstrate a single-passband chirped microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on phase modulation of a broadband optical source and nonlinear dispersion. Compared to optical intensity modulator, phase modulator has the advantages of low loss, simple structure and absence of bias drift. At the receiver, the optical signal is directly detected due to the phase to intensity modulation (PM-IM) conversion. The baseband response is also eliminated without any additional setup thanks to the conversion property. The PM-IM conversion under nonlinear dispersion and the MPF's transfer function are investigated theoretically and verified experimentally.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a microwave photonic band-pass filter (MPF), which features a single light source, with continuously and independently tunable center frequency and bandwidth. The center frequency and bandwidth can be adjusted by tuning the variable optical delay line and the position of a spatial filter, respectively. Using a balanced photodetector, the baseband, which is ineradicable in some conventional designs, and the common-mode noise are canceled in our proof-of-concept experiment. Alternatively, a notch with continuously tunable frequency can also be added in the MPF. The experimental measurements of the frequency response of this MPF are demonstrated, which have a good agreement with the theoretical simulations.

Abstract:Abstract A bandwidth-tunable optical filter is fabricated by combining Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and microring resonator. Both bandwidth red-shift and blue-shift are observed in the experiment. The bandwidth can be tuned from 0.46 to 3.09 nm by controlling two phase shifters. The device also shows an extinction ratio higher than 25 dB. Potential applications are integrated optical signal processing such as reconfigurable filtering and channel selecting in wavelength division multiplexer.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme of high-Q microwave photonic filter (MPF) using the techniques of self-phase modulation (SPM) spectrum broadening and third-order dispersion (TOD) compensation. The optical pulses from a mode-locking laser are spectrally broadened by the SPM in the highly nonlinear fiber. A wideband optical frequency comb with 365 spectral lines within 10-dB power variation from the highest spectral power is obtained. By applying a cubic phase modulation via a waveshaper, the effect of TOD which broadens the MPF passband is eliminated. The final implemented MPF has a Q-value as high as 296 and a tuning range of 700 MHz.

Abstract:By applying the microring resonator to the Mach-Zehnder (MZ) optical modulator and employing the super-linear phase change characteristic of the all-pass filter, the sublinear modulation curve of the conventional MZ modulator is highly linearized. With properly controlled power coupling between the microring and the arm of the MZ modulator, the third-order distortion can be suppressed. If the transmission coefficient is set between 0.25 and 0.42, the linearity range larger than 90% can be easily achieved. The maximum linearity range is even up to 99.5%.
