Abstract:A novel ultrawideband (UWB) pulse generation method using hybrid photonic microwave filters is proposed and demonstrated. Both electrical and optical delay are employed to construct microwave filters. The coefficients can be set to be either positive or negative by fiber chromatic dispersion and polarization modulation techniques, respectively. Abstract:Photonic generation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses is experimentally demonstrated using a cascaded electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier by exploiting a combination of cross-absorption modulation and cross-gain modulation. The polarities and shapes of UWB monocycle and doublet pulses can be simply controlled using an optical time-delay controller and the reverse voltage applied to the EAM. The corresponding measured rf spectra meet the UWB criteria.

Abstract:Dual-chirp waveform, as a type of wideband radar signal that can improve the range-Doppler resolution in radar system has been studied widely. In this paper, a photonic scheme for generation of frequency- and bandwidth-doubling dual-chirp waveform is proposed and experimental demonstrated. An integrated dual-parallel MZM is applied, where a microwave signal and a single-chirp signal are modulated, biasing at null and full points, respectively. An electrical rather than optical band-pass filter that used in the system can reduce the complexity. Experimental results perform the generated dual-chirp waveforms with frequency of 6 GHz and bandwidth of 2 GHz. The time-bandwidth product is about 154.2. Potentially, this approach can be a method for high frequency, large bandwidth and long duration dual-chirp waveforms generation.

Abstract:A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) is presented using a half-mode T-septum substrate integrated waveguide combined with electromagnetic bandgap structures. When compared with conventional substrate integrated waveguide filters, its width is very small and can work in monomode over the UWB frequency range. Abstract:A novel tunable multiband ultra-wide band (MB-UWB) pulses generation method using synchronously-apodized polarization modulation and birefringence time delay is proposed and demonstrated in this letter. Proper apodization profile is used to get MB-UWB pulses with spectra sidelobes suppression over 20dB. Five bands of MB-UWB pulses are generated by tuning the modulation frequency and transmitted over wireless channel. The central frequencies are from 4GHz to 6GHz and bandwidths larger than 500MHz. This method can be used in multiband modulation UWB over fiber systems.

Abstract:Ultra-wideband (UWB)-over-fiber is an attractive technique to extend the reach of UWB systems and to consolidate wireless personal access networks with fiber-to-thecustomer-premises (FTTCP). In this scenario, simple ways to generate UWB signals by photonic means is highly desired. Moreover, detection techniques of UWB signals that simplify the transceivers are of crucial importance. In this paper, we present experimental results for the photonic generation of UWB signals complying with the Federal Communication Committee (FCC) mask by using an uncooled distributed feedback laser (DFB). We also show examples of the use of digital signal processing (DSP) to assist the detection of UWB signal over multi-mode fiber links for short range communication networks.

Abstract:A novel photonic approach for generating switchable multi-format chirp RF waveforms is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key component in the scheme is a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). By properly setting the bias voltage on the DPMZM, different chirp RF waveforms with a doubled bandwidth, including the dual-, up-, and down-chirp waveforms, can be generated, when an unmodulated RF signal and a chirp RF signal are injected. The experiments are implemented to demonstrate the generation of switchable chirp waveforms with bandwidths of 2 and 0.8 GHz. The proposed scheme features its compact structure, easiness in switching control, as well as bandwidth doubling, which has potential applications in multifunctional radars.

Abstract:We propose a novel photonic harmonic mixer operating at frequencies up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) band. By combining a broadband fiber-wireless signal with high-order harmonics of a fundamental local oscillator in an optical frequency comb generator, frequency down-conversion can be implemented without using a costly ultra-broadband photodiode. It is theoretically shown that the down-conversion efficiency and the bandwidth of the mixer is highly dependent on the optical modulation indices and the fundamental frequency of comb lines. Down-conversion of a W-band (75-110 GHz) fiber-wireless signal is experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of a multigigabit quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 62.5-, 82.5-, and 102.5-GHz carrier frequencies is studied to evaluate the down-conversion efficiency. The proposed photonic harmonic mixer can be a candidate for applications in high capacity fiber-wireless communication systems.

Abstract:The generation of photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse signals using an uncooled distributed-feedback laser is proposed. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate bit-for-bit digital signal processing (DSP) bit-error-rate measurements for transmission of a 781.25-Mb/s photonic UWB signal over fiber links. The DSP algorithm is described, the generated UWB signal is shown to comply with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission requirements, and transmission of 1.71times105 UWB bits over fiber is demonstrated without error.

Abstract:A novel composite approach to generate UltraWidcBand (UWB) monocytic and doublet pulses in optical domain is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Simple electrical Gaussian pulse is modulated on optical earlier to generate UWB monocycle and doublet pulse successively. The UWB monocytic pulse is first generated based on birefringence time delay in polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). Two polarity-reverse pulses are generated by polarization modulation using a single phase modulator and delayed in PMF with proper time to generate monocycle pulse. Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is placed after the monocytic pulse generation to modify the optical pulse profile. Thanks to the gain saturation and recovery in SOA, the doublet shape pulse can be obtained. The fractional bandwidths of monocycle and doublet pulses arc 140% and 160% respectively, which can meet the UWB requirements.

Abstract:Optical methods for different type ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse generation based on cross-polarization modulation (CPM) are proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Two polarity-reverse pulses can be obtained by CPM and birefringence time delay to form a monocycle pulse. A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is placed after the monocycle pulse process for doublet pulse generation. These two kinds of pulses can be employed in single-band impulse radio UWB (IR-UWB) systems. Two kinds of multi-band UWB pulses can be generated based on monocycle pulse train with proper apodization profiles, realized by hybrid photonic microwave filter and synchronous polarization modulation respectively. Experimental results show that these pulses can be used in multi-band UWB (MB-UWB) over fiber systems.

Abstract:A novel optical method for frequency upconversion in ultra-wideband (UWB) system application is proposed and demonstrated. A UWB monocycle pulse can be generated by cross-polarsation modulation combined with carrier-suppressed modulation, and after an O/E detector, it can be converted to 32 GHz band. After electrical downconversion, the UWB monocycle pulse has a fractional bandwidth of 144 and fits UWB applications.

Abstract:A novel composite approach to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) doublet pulses in optical domain through an electrical Gaussian pulse is proposed and demonstrated in this letter. Two pulses with reversed polarity generated by polarization modulation are fed into a differential group delay device and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) wherein the optical pulse profile is modified. Doublet pulses are obtained after optical-electrical detection due to gain saturation and recovery mechanism in the SOA. The fractional bandwidth of doublet pulses exceeds 180%, fulfilling the UWB requirements.

Abstract:A photonic approach to generating chirped microwave signal with high time-bandwidth product (TBWP) is proposed. The scheme utilizes the linear frequency-to-time mapping of a spectrally-shaped optical pulse propagating through a dispersive element. A mode-locked laser for generating short optical pulses and a programmable optical filter (POF) to shape the spectrum of the pulses are employed. Experiment results show that the chirped signal with a TBWP and compression ratio both in excess of 60 is achieved. We also estimate theoretically the maximum TBWP that can be achieved over 300 under the constraint of the finite frequency resolution of the applied POF. The effect of higher order dispersion on the generated RF pulses and the TBWP is also investigated.

Abstract:This article presents a low-cost ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse generator that is built using commercially available discrete components mounted on a PTFE substrate. A novel pulse shaping technique is adopted, which uses Schottky barrier diodes to generate a Gaussian-cosine pulse with desirable time duration and spectrum response. Generated baseband pulses then are up-converted to a center frequency of 4 or 8 GHz by a passive mixer, and Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation scheme is utilized. The final generated pulse with a bandwidth (-10 dB) of more than 1 GHz satisfies the FCC spectrum mask very well without any extra filtering, and can operate in either 3.1-5 GHz low band or 6-10 GHz high hand. Abstract:A novel all-optical method for ultra-wideband (UWB) monocycle pulses generation based on cross polarization modulation (CPM) effect in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is proposed and demonstrated.Due to the CPM effect between the probe light and the pump pulse,a pair of polarity-reversed Gaussian pulses is produced.After proper differential delay,an UWB monocycle pulse with 84-ps width and the fractional bandwidth of 153% is generated after photodetection.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple method to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses with different pulse shape, based on incoherent optical arbitrary waveform generation. Pulses with opposite polarity are obtained using the phase-modulator-based dual-input intensity modulator. Monocycle, doublet and high-order UWB pulses meeting the FCC regulation are generated. Both temporal waveform and power spectral of the signal generated are evaluated.

Abstract:A novel tunable ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) with narrow notched band based on photonic method is proposed. The filter is mainly composed of an electrooptical phase modulator (EOPM) and a phase shift fiber Bragg grating (FBG). As the FBG serves as a tilt filter with limited bandwidth and a p-shift, the optical phase-modulation to intensity-modulation conversion induced by the reflection of the FBG generates a bandpass radio-frequency response with narrow notched band. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach.
