Abstract:In this letter, an all-optical incoherent scheme for generation of binary phase-coded ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radio signals is proposed. The generated UWB pulses utilize relaxation oscillations of an optically injected distributed feedback laser that are binary phase encoded (0 and pi) and meet the requirements of Federal Communications Commission regulations. We experimentally demonstrated a 781.25-Mb/s UWB-over-fiber transmission system. A digital-signal-processing-based receiver is employed to calculate the bit-error rate. Our proposed system has potential application in future high-speed UWB impulse radio over optical fiber access networks.

Abstract:The generation of photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse signals using an uncooled distributed-feedback laser is proposed. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate bit-for-bit digital signal processing (DSP) bit-error-rate measurements for transmission of a 781.25-Mb/s photonic UWB signal over fiber links. The DSP algorithm is described, the generated UWB signal is shown to comply with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission requirements, and transmission of 1.71times105 UWB bits over fiber is demonstrated without error.

Abstract:In this paper, we comprehensively review our research work on system wide implementation of photonically generated IR-UWB signals based on relaxation oscillations of a semiconductor laser. Firstly, we present our novel approach as a flexible method for photonic generation of high speed impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) signals at 781.25 Mbps with on-off keying (OOK) and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation formats. We further advance the state-of-the-art to include multi-Gigabit IR-UWB signal generation. Both OOK and BPSK signals comply with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation. Secondly, we implement UWB fiber transmission systems and study hybrid fiber-wireless transmission performance at a system level. This is accomplished by employing our digital signal processing (DSP) assisted receiver. The photonic generation method is superior to the state-of-the-art electronic generation method in terms of transmission bit-error rate performance. Moreover, photonic IR-UWB generation is shown to be capable of longer wireless reach due to its lower bandwidth limitation. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the integration of a relaxation oscillations-based UWB photonic generation system into existing wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PON) infrastructure. This provides converged Gigabit indoor wireless and wireline access services.

Abstract:Photonic generation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses is experimentally demonstrated using a cascaded electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier by exploiting a combination of cross-absorption modulation and cross-gain modulation. The polarities and shapes of UWB monocycle and doublet pulses can be simply controlled using an optical time-delay controller and the reverse voltage applied to the EAM. The corresponding measured rf spectra meet the UWB criteria.

Abstract:Ultra-wideband (UWB)-over-fiber is an attractive technique to extend the reach of UWB systems and to consolidate wireless personal access networks with fiber-to-thecustomer-premises (FTTCP). In this scenario, simple ways to generate UWB signals by photonic means is highly desired. Moreover, detection techniques of UWB signals that simplify the transceivers are of crucial importance. In this paper, we present experimental results for the photonic generation of UWB signals complying with the Federal Communication Committee (FCC) mask by using an uncooled distributed feedback laser (DFB). We also show examples of the use of digital signal processing (DSP) to assist the detection of UWB signal over multi-mode fiber links for short range communication networks.

Abstract:A photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse generator based on relaxation oscillations of a semiconductor laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We numerically simulate the modulation response of a direct modulation laser (DML) and show that due to the relaxation oscillations of the laser, the generated signals with complex shape in time domain match the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mask in the frequency domain. Experimental results using a DML agree well with simulation predictions. Furthermore, we also experimentally demonstrate the generation of FCC compliant UWB signals by externally injecting a distributed feedback (DFB) laser.

Abstract:A novel method of photonic arbitrary waveform generation is presented, which combines photonic digital-to-analog conversion technique and IQ upconversion. A 2-bit prototype is built experimentally and a linear frequency-modulated waveform with a bandwidth of 4 GHz is synthesized with a 2-GHz baseband width.

Abstract:We propose a photonic method for generating millimeter-wave 4-QAM/QPSK modulated signals. The method is based on optical phase modulation by multilevel electrical signals and optical carrier-suppression. Simulation results are presented for 2.5 Gsymbol/s 4-QAM and QPSK signals at a 36 GHz carrier. Furthermore, this method can be extended to generate millimeter-wave m-PSK signals and can be incorporated into broadband radio-over-fiber systems to support wireless/ wireline converged access network.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to generate ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle pulses based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The proposed system consists of a SOA and an optical bandpass filter (OBF). Due to the XPM, a continuous wave (CW) probe signal is phase modulated by another optical Gauss pulse in the SOA. The OBF will convert the phase modulation to intensity modulation. A pair of polarity-reversed UWB monocycle pulses is achieved by locating the probe carrier at the positive and negative linear slopes of the OBF. Both cases conform to the UWB definition of the Federal Communications Commission.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a power-efficient ultrawideband (UWB) generation scheme using an electro-optic phase modulator. The generated UWB pulses are fully Federal Communication Commission compliant with high power efficiency of 52.6%. Furthermore, 2-Gbit/s on-off keying modulated modified UWB triplet signals are transmitted over 20 km optical fiber link without any obvious spectra or pulse shape distortions, and error-free transmission is achieved with power penalties less than 1.5 dB.

Abstract:A novel scheme for ultra-wideband (UWB) monocycle pulse generation is proposed based on a dual-output push-pull Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM).The MZM is driven by a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data sequence and biased at the nonlinear point to generate edge-triggered pulses.To combine the complementary pulses forming a monocycle UWB pulse, two schemes are used to implement incoherent summation structure.A proof-of-concept experiment of UWB-over-fiber down-link system is set up.Further, by using digital signal processing (DSP) to calculate the bit error rate (BER), the transmission performance of two system configurations is studied.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple method to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses with different pulse shape, based on incoherent optical arbitrary waveform generation. Pulses with opposite polarity are obtained using the phase-modulator-based dual-input intensity modulator. Monocycle, doublet and high-order UWB pulses meeting the FCC regulation are generated. Abstract:A novel composite approach to generate UltraWidcBand (UWB) monocytic and doublet pulses in optical domain is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Simple electrical Gaussian pulse is modulated on optical earlier to generate UWB monocycle and doublet pulse successively. The UWB monocytic pulse is first generated based on birefringence time delay in polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). Two polarity-reverse pulses are generated by polarization modulation using a single phase modulator and delayed in PMF with proper time to generate monocycle pulse. Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is placed after the monocytic pulse generation to modify the optical pulse profile. Thanks to the gain saturation and recovery in SOA, the doublet shape pulse can be obtained. The fractional bandwidths of monocycle and doublet pulses arc 140% and 160% respectively, which can meet the UWB requirements.

Abstract:Silicon photonics has emerged as the premier candidate for the photonic systems-on-chip (SoC). The scheme based on the silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) to generate photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) signals is helpful to the integration of the UWB system with other optical networks on a single silicon-based chip. In this paper, according to the influence of the nonlinear free carrier dispersion (FCD) effect and the free carrier absorption (FCA) effect, the performance of two typical UWB generation schemes is numerically analyzed. The double side-band UWB (DSB-UWB) generation scheme needs the DC reverse bias which increases the complexity of the modulator and there is a residual chirp resulting from the FCD effect even the push-pull operation is adopted. The quasi single-sideband UWB (QSSB-UWB) generation scheme doesn't have these problems. However there is the asymmetric amplitude peak in the generated UWB signal. The property of the large singal modulation is also investigated to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The generation of ultra-wideband signals in the optical domain is highly desirable for ultra-wideband-over-fiber systems, which has recently become a topic of interest. In this article, a novel and simple approach to achieve all-optical generation of ultra-wideband signals is proposed, which is based on delaying and superimposing optical Gaussian pulses with opposite polarities. The proposed system is capable of generating both ultra-wideband monocycle and doublet pulses, and the polarity of the generated ultra-wideband monocycle pulses can be fast-switched to implement pulse polarity modulation with the required bit pattern. A model to describe the proposed system is developed, and the generation of ultra-wideband signals is demonstrated with simulations and a proof-of-concept experiment.

Abstract:A novel composite approach to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) doublet pulses in optical domain through an electrical Gaussian pulse is proposed and demonstrated in this letter. Two pulses with reversed polarity generated by polarization modulation are fed into a differential group delay device and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) wherein the optical pulse profile is modified. Doublet pulses are obtained after optical-electrical detection due to gain saturation and recovery mechanism in the SOA. The fractional bandwidth of doublet pulses exceeds 180%, fulfilling the UWB requirements.
