Abstract:Overlay IP/MPLS over WDM network is widely viewed as the most promising solution for supporting the next-generation optical Internet. The main challenge in such kind of networks typically comes from the limited information exchanges between its two layers. Though various algorithms and schemes have been proposed for traffic grooming in such overlay networks, to the best of our knowledge, there exists no systematic study for evaluating the impacts of limited information exchanges on network performance. This paper studies dynamic traffic grooming problem in overlay IP/MPLS over WDM networks. Specifically, we evaluate the impacts of the accuracy of WDM-layer link cost information and WDM-layer routing methods on the performance of overlay networks. Extensive simulation results show that i) having an appropriate link cost assignment strategy is of critical importance in deciding network performance; ii) the existence of inaccurate link cost information in overlay networks does significantly affect network performance, even when the link cost assignment strategy is carefully designed to enhance the tolerance to such inaccuracy; and iii) when subject to inaccurate link-state information, fixed and dynamic routing methods on WDM layer may not lead to significant differences in network performance.
Multilayer Recovery Mechanism for IP over WDM Networks

Abstract:In this article, we mainly focus on the integrated dynamic survivability in IP/MPLS/WDM networks under the peer-modeled architecture. We systematically investigated various integrated dynamic protection and restoration schemes combining knowledge of resource and topology information in both the IP/MPLS and WDM layers. To allocate the restorable bandwidth-guaranteed paths, we propose an integrated routing algorithm: Load-Balanced Physical Resource Minimum Hop (LBPRMH) integrated routing algorithm. In this algorithm, we present a new link cost function used in Dijkstra's algorithm considering both physical resource and load balancing factors and employ a parameter (relevant to traffic intensity) to control the influence of two kind of information. When network load is low (traffic intensity is small), the main factor in the proposed link cost function is physical resource, which leads to high resource utilization. When network load is high, the idea of load balance becomes more important in routing, which avoids connection requests conflict and increases the efficiency of resource usage. Then extensive simulations are done to analyze and compare the dynamic survival performance of various integrated survival strategies. Resource utilization, protection efficiency, restoration efficiency are employed as metrics to evaluate the survivable performance. We demonstrate that the proposed integrated routing algorithm performs better than some existing approaches in terms of the above three metrics. The simulation results show the high resource utilization in optical layer recovery with wavelength granularity and the high restoration flexibility in IP/MPLS layer recovery with finer granularity. If the recovery action is implemented first in lower layer and then higher layer if the first action failed, the integrated protection and restoration schemes can combine the advantages of both layers and perform better than recovery schemes in either single layer.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the problem of a restoration scheme for IP over WDM networks. Network reliability is gaining importance with the huge volume of traffic carried by such networks. Providing survivability at the optical layer is inherently attractive, but raises many questions and challenges, given the characteristic of optical aggregated lightpath and relatively coarse traffic granularity. The emergence of MPLS and its extension, MP/spl lambda/S, opens up new possibilities for developing simple integrated protection/restoration schemes that can be coordinated at both the IP and optical layers . This article first presents an overview of existing MPLS/MP/spl lambda/S recovery mechanisms. Then we propose a joint two-layer recovery scheme for IP-centric WDM-based optical networks where the optical layer takes the recovery actions first, and subsequently the upper IP layer initiates its own recovery mechanism, if the optical layer does not restore all affected services. A simulation-based analysis shows the benefits of the proposed two-layer recovery scheme over single-layer recovery schemes. We demonstrate the advantages of finer granularity in IP layer recovery and the effectiveness in speed on the optical layer. The impact of several network parameters on recovery performance is also studied in the paper.

Abstract:Feature Issue on Next-Generation WDM Network Design and Routing (WDMN). The increasing demand for bandwidth that has resulted from the emergence of various bandwidth-thirsty applications has increased the need for employing WDM as a dominant technology for the next-generation optical internet. As these networks carry gigantic amounts of information, survivability has become a primary and basic need for them. Although the available proactive protection schemes provide a 100% restoration guarantee, they require huge redundancy and usually result in a very high blocking probability. We propose a novel active restoration scheme that restores a failed primary lightpath based on multiple predefined but nonreserved backup paths along the primary path. Extensive simulation results based on three typical test networks indicate that with a small increase in restoration time, our new restoration scheme can reduce the blocking probability and the capacity requirement significantly while guaranteeing a very high restoration probability.

Abstract:Overlay IP/MPLS over WDM network holds great promise for the Next-Generation Internet. One key design challenge with such a network is the limited information exchange between its two layers. We evaluate the influences of limited WDM-layer link cost information and routing strategies on network performances for dynamic multicast traffic grooming. Simulation results show that both WDM-layer link cost information and routing strategy have significant impacts on the network performances, especially when the network resources are abundant In addition, the impacts of WDM-layer link cost information are more significant compared to those of the routing strategy. The results suggest that there is significant potential for network performance improvements by designing more efficient schemes for overlay traffic grooming and sharing of link-state information between the WDM and IP/MPLS layers.

Abstract:This paper focuses on dynamic integrated routing in multifiber Internet protocol/wavelength-division multiplexing (IP/WDM) networks, which can be implemented through either one-step routing (OSR) or two-step routing (TSR) approach. Based on an extended layered-graph, two resource assignment strategies, termed channel-level balance (CLB) and link-level balance (LLB), are proposed to balance the traffic in the network at different levels. To further improve the performance, a parameter K is introduced to make a dynamic tradeoff between the logical-layer links and the optical-layer links. Simulation studies are carried out for various topologies. The results show that LLB is better than CLB in most cases, and LLB combined with OSR has the optimal performance. Also, we find that the routing approach and the resource assignment strategy individually play different roles with different values of rl that is introduced to indicate the resource richness of the network. As a multifiber network is functionally equivalent to a single-fiber network with limited wavelength conversion, we investigate the effects of wavelength conversion by studying the multifiber IP/WDM networks. The analysis shows that, when the granularity of each connection request is much smaller than the wavelength granularity, wavelength conversion may increase the request blocking probability in the network.

Abstract:In high-speed WDM optical networks, failure recovery is a critical issue as a single element failure in the network will result in the interruption of multiple services. Distributed path restoration is preferable for its high flexibility and efficient resource utilization. However, with the development and maturity of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, the resource contention problem arises when simultaneously restoring a large amount of services initiated from many uncoordinated source nodes. This will degrade network performance and result in long service recovery latency. In this paper, we present the Routing Pre-Configuration (RPC) scheme for fast and scalable path restoration in DWDM networks, where pre-failure configuration and post-failure signaling are demonstrated. We compare it with the previous contention resolution approaches and the simulation results prove its improvement in restoration blocking probability and average restoration time.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the quality of service guarantee and other key characteristics of network restoration route searching for fast restoration in a WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) optical transport network. A heuristic algorithm based on genetic algorithm is presented to solve the fast searching problem of optimal restoration. Numerical tests of the algorithm on two practical national scale optical networks proved the validatity and the accuracy of the algorithm.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks using wavelength routing technology are considered to be a potential and practical solution to the next generation of wide area backbone networks. The ever-increasing demand for bandwidth farther enhances the application of WDM optical networking technology. The main problem involved in design and optimization of wavelength-routed optical network is lightpath routing and wavelength assignment, namely, R&WA. In previous work on the R&WA problem, the project function has been analyzed by mathematic tools, such as integrate linear programming (ILP), heuristic algorithms or probability model, under the assumption of an ideal physical layer over which transmission impairments are ignored. In practical application, however, such impairments and their influence over traffic performance should be considered seriously, and the lightpath selection should be adjusted accordingly.In this paper, we propose an integrated approach for lightpath routing, which considers both the limitations of network topology and resource and the restrictions resulted from transmission impairments through the path computed by our heuristic algorithm when performing lightpath routing. The selected paths resulted from our proposed R&WA algorithm will be evaluated in a coarse-to-fine mechanism. By analyzing the impact of the optical devices (OXC, EDFA etc.) deployed through the lightpath, an optimal path is finally determined.This paper is composed mainly in three parts. For the first part, as to a given network topology, we present the ligthpath routing result, which investigate the influence of different network parameters, based on the proposed heuristic algorithm combining graph theory. For the second part, we studied the impact of various transmission impairments over BER performance, including crosstalk and noise caused by the optical devices. For the third part we combine the results obtained from the former two parts, and evaluate the selected path in a coarse-to-fine mechanism to make an optimal selection. The problem of load balancing is also briefly discussed in our paper.

Abstract:Network survivability is a crucial requirement in WDM optical networks. In this paper, we consider the issue of dynamic restoration in WDM networks with dynamic traffic demands, in which path-based restoration (PR) and link-based restoration (LR) are investigated in detail. Besides, we propose a more practical single-link failure model, in which the link-failure-interarrival time and link-failure-holding time are considered as two independent parameters. Based on this link-failure model, extensive numerical simulations are done to observe the dynamic survivable performance of WDM networks for path restoration scheme and link restoration scheme. The effective blocking probability, average path length, and restoration efficiency are employed as performance metrics to evaluate the survivable performance of PR and LR versus network traffic load, link failure frequency and link failure reparation time.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of global informatization, information has penetrated into every corner of human society. With the popularization of Internet, the transmission bandwidth of information becomes more and more important. Nowadays, people’s demand and dependence on information are becoming stronger and stronger. It is urgent to expand the capacity of wide area backbone communication network, and the optical network composed of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can just take this role. In WDM network, it can transmit multiple optical signals of different wavelengths in one fiber at the same time. WDM has the advantages of large transmission capacity, strong technical adaptability, simple implementation and easy expansion. In addition, WDM optical network can also make full use of the huge bandwidth of optical fiber itself to carry out high-speed transmission. Now, the optical network using WDM technology has become the backbone network of long-distance transmission. This paper studies the optical fiber communication system and analyzes the structure of the optical fiber network. For the optical network, how to find the appropriate routing is a very important technology. After analyzing all kinds of basic routing technologies, this paper proposes a new policy based routing technology, and carries out relevant experiments. The experimental results show that the new routing technology has some advantages compared with the old routing technology.

Abstract:In wavelength-routed optical networks, a lightpath connection can be provisioned only if a path, or a pair of paths in case of path protection is required, can be found which satisfies multiple constraints while simultaneously achieving optimal primary cost. The primary cost can be any metric set by network administrators, and the constraints concerned in optical networks include wavelength continuity constraint, accumulation effect of some transmission impairments in the optical domain, and SRLG-disjoint requirement in survivable networks. In this paper, the impact of these constraints on the optimal path calculation algorithms is studied. Three novel algorithms for solving this problem, which we call “Impairment Aware Optimal Path Pair” problem, are proposed, and their performance is evaluated through extensive simulations.

Abstract:An integrated approach which combines traditional routing and wavelength assignment problem with physical transmission impairments is proposed for the optimal design of wavelength-routed optical networks. A heuristic algorithm is developed to evaluate the approach in a coarse-to-fine manner, and the load balancing problem is also studied. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can guarantee transmission performance, meanwhile the wavelength requirement is close to the optimal result, and the traffic load tends to be evenly distributed with more alternate paths.

Abstract:We address the issue of traffic-oblivious routing (i.e., robust routing) in WDM networks dealing with both link and node failures under load-balancing architectures. Two distinct schemes are proposed. One is static with the goal of minimizing total network cost given a set of multiple failures. The other considers dynamic network environment (i.e., connection requests arrive one after another), and is designed against the failures aiming at the maximum network throughput. We manifest by simulation that both of these two schemes perform better than the previously proposed protection schemes as well as the unprotected ones.
