Abstract:A bandwidth reservation-based priority scheme (BRPS) and a restricted path-based priority scheme (RPPS) were developed to support multi-service transmissions in IP over dense wavelength division multiplexing networks. The BRPS provides good quality of service for high priority traffic by reserving part of the bandwidth for virtual links. The RPPS provides service differentiation by offering different numbers of restricted paths for traffic with different priorities. Discrete event simulations show that, compared to the wavelength reservation-based priority scheme, The BPRS has a lower blocking probability for low traffic loads. The RPPS has a lower average blocking probability than the BRPS when the network traffic load is above 800 Erlangs. In addition, the blocking probability of the RPPS can be adjusted dynamically by changing the number of restricted paths. Thus, the RPPS has a very powerful capability to provide service differentiation.

Abstract:We propose a domain-level-based routing (DLR) algorithm for a multidomain WDM network with confidentiality constraints of interdomain connectivity and wavelength availability. This algorithm classifies all domains in the network into different groups with incremental levels according to the metrics that they are relative to the source and destination domains. The path computation is implemented in the ascending or descending direction of domain levels for domains within the determined domain set. The resultant route is calculated via the growth and pruning of an interdomain routing tree (IDRT). Three modes of growth and five modes of pruning are proposed to support the IDRT evolution. The DLR algorithm can be accomplished in a hierarchical path computation element (PCE) routing architecture, with the domain set determined and the IDRT calculated by the parent PCE and intradomain path computed by child PCEs. Simulation results indicate that the proposed DLR algorithm performs better than previous schemes in terms of blocking probability and resource utilization ratio, with slight signaling overhead and computation complexity increase.

Abstract:To have a better network usage in IP over WDM networks, it is important to take into account the combined topology and resource usage information at the IP and optical layers, i.e, for an arriving request, there should be a scheme to determine whether it is better to route it over the existing topology or to open new wavelength paths. Moreover, lightpath length should be considered in many cases especially for different QoS applications and traffic engineering. To solve these issues, this paper develops an integrated dynamic length-constrained routing algorithm based on transforming-graph. As the proposed routing scheme makes full use of the statistic information of the users' bandwidth requirement and considers carefully both the IP and optical layers' information, thus reduces greatly the bandwidth fragment which can not be used by any other subsequent requests, i.e, an improved network resource usage. Simulation results show that the developed scheme performs well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected requests and the network average blocking probability.

Abstract:Multi-path routing is a promising technique to increase the Internet's reliability and to give users greater control over the service they receive. Currently the interdomain routing protocol limits each router to using a single route for same destination, which may not satisfy the diverse requirements of end users. In this paper, in order to support the effective and efficient multi-path service(MPS), we propose a multi-path inter-domain routing via deviation from primary path(MIR-DPP) which includes two main steps as following. Firstly, to improve the path diversity of node pairs, the special topology collected from neighboring ASes around the primary path, and the multipath set is calculated by our multipath discovery method. Secondly, to gain high-quality paths which are not compliant with routing policy, a negotiation mechanism is designed to address policy limits. Experiments with Internet topology and routing data demonstrate that MIR-DPP offers tremendous flexibility and diversity for path selection with reasonable overhead.

Abstract:SDN improves the flexibility and programmability of the network. However, malicious attacks caused by potential vulnerabilities and backdoors can easily lead to data and rule tampering in the network. To address this problem, this paper proposes an endogenous secure SDN network framework based on multipath resilient routing (MRR). MRR includes multipath comparing forwarding, multipath weighted forwarding, and multipath random forwarding. The framework ensures the correctness of flow rules and data content by dynamically comparing the consistency of multi-heterogeneous path data within a certain period, and multipath can also achieve load balance by weighted forwarding. In the MRR framework, we also present an intermediate information feedback mechanism based on encryption authentication and give a mathematical model to evaluate it. This mechanism can accurately identify and dynamically repair malicious switches. Simulation evaluation and prototype system test show that this framework can achieve high accuracy of flow transmission and high availability of system. At the same time, multipath comparing forwarding will bring some performance costs such as delay, bandwidth, and jitter at initial and attacking time. However, when the appropriate forwarding mode and reasonable period T are selected, the proportion of delay introduced by comparing and ruling can be less than 10%, and the average bandwidth of mixed forwarding is almost the same as traditional multipaths', such as we can guarantee 25% multipath comparing forwarding when the bandwidth requirement is 250 M in prototype system.

Abstract:Interdomain Multipath Routing, which enables a source AS to use more than one paths for a destination AS, is a promising technique for achieving high bandwidth, high resiliency and fast reaction to failures. However, previous interdomain multipath routing protocols often produce paths which might share bottlenecks, which makes them vulnerable to failure on bottlenecks and therefore inefficient to support interdomain traffic engineering or concurrent multipath transfer. In this paper, we propose Disjoint Interdomain Multipath Routing (DIMR), attempting to make more ASes discover two disjoint paths. In this protocol, we present the concept of path combination and design the rules of path combination selection. We evaluate DIMR by simulation. Experimental results show that, DIMR enables over 90% of multi-connected ASes to install two disjoint paths.

Abstract:In this paper the influence of routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms on the blocking probability in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) all optical network under the condition of static routing was studied. The Single Route and Reroute routing strategies, longest path first (LPF) and shortest path first (SPF) wavelength assignment strategies were compared respectively. In moderately connected network. it is proved by numeric simulation that lower blocking probability can be obtained by Reroute and SPF strategy in virtual wavelength path (VWP) mode. While in wavelength path (WP) mode. when the traffic load is low. Reroute and LPF strategy should be adopted, when the traffic load is high. Reroute and SPF should be adopted. In lowly connected network. Reroute strategy has no effect, so Single Route can be used combined with SPF strategy.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:Overlay routing has been widely used in Internet, mainly because of user demands for security, reliability, bandwidth, etc. Many approaches use overlay routing by deploying certain number of overlay nodes and expose them to users. Thus, users have much more flexibility in specifying their end-to-end paths. But these benefits also bring some troubles, e.g., more serious congestions may happen on some links due to the selfish nature of network. In this paper, we adopt ROR (restricted overlay routing) which will not expose all overlay nodes to users, but provide limited number of them while considering overall performance. Different users may get different overlay nodes, and they can still make their choice according to their own demands. We carry out substantial simulations under various topologies and parameters, we show that we can achieve better performance, i.e., lower Min-max link utilization.

Abstract:We have developed a new layered-routing approach to address the problem of all-optical multicast over wavelength-routed wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. We model the WDM network as a collection of wavelength layers with sparse light- splitting (LS) and wavelength conversion (WC) capabilities. We apply the degree constraint technique to solve the problem. The approach is capable of completing multicast routing and wavelength assignment (MCRWA) in one step. We propose two generic frameworks to facilitate heuristic development. Any heuristic that is derived from either Prim’s or Kruskal’s algorithm can be easily imported to solve the MCRWA problem. One example is given for each framework to demonstrate heuristic development. Extensive simulations were carried out to measure the performance of heuristics developed from the frameworks. The results show that the STRIGENT scheme is suitable for hardware design and it is advisable to deploy light splitters and wavelength converters to the same node for better performance.

Abstract:Optical fiber networks have become the foundations of communication system to provide enormous transmission capacity with less cost. Connection blocking is an inherent attribute and influences optical networks' performance, especially in multi-domain network scenarios. We analyze the reason and effect of blockings including routing blockings and signaling blockings. We regard the cause of signaling blockings as the information asynchronization in resource reservation process. We define the concept of Information Asynchronization Period to describe the effect of signaling blockings. To reduce signaling blockings in end-to-end optical path provisioning for multi-domain scenarios, we propose a novel network routing and control scheme, named Intra-Domain Immediate Reroute based Semi-Proactive Hierarchical Path Computation Element (IDIRSP H-PCE). The proposed routing and control scheme mainly consists of two parts, Semi-Proactive routing and Intra-Domain Immediate Reroute mechanism. Dynamic network simulations verify our proposed scheme. We compare the network performance with Reactive Backward Recursive PCE-based Computation (BRPC) based PCE, Reactive H-PCE and Proactive H-PCE. Simulation results indicate that IDIRSP H-PCE can provide connection with a very low blocking probability in light load case, which is close to Proactive H-PCE, and obviously better than BRPC based Reactive PCE and Reactive H-PCE. For heavy load case, IDIRSP H-PCE has a remarkably lower blocking probability than other three methods. Moreover, we test our proposed routing and control scheme when facing link faults. Simulation results indicate that IDIRSP H-PCE can greatly improve the traffic access rate and optimize the network performance.

Abstract:Rerouting is a viable and cost-effective approach to decrease the blocking probability in legacy circuit- switched networks. We study lightpath rerouting in optical WDM networks in this paper. First, we investigate two different lightpath-rerouting strategies, namely, passive rerouting and intentional rerouting. Passive rerouting means the rerouting of existing lightpaths to accommodate new lightpath requests that will otherwise be blocked. Intentional rerouting is intentionally rerouting existing lightpaths during their life period to achieve better load balancing. Second, we investigate the hybrid rerouting scheme, which combines passive rerouting and intentional rerouting. Through extensive simulation studies, we draw the following conclusions: (1) when there is wavelength conversion, passive rerouting works much better than intentional rerouting, and hybrid rerouting can only improve the performance over passive rerouting slightly, and (2) when there is no wavelength conversion, a naive-wavelength-retuning algorithm can achieve the most benefit of passive rerouting, whereas path adjusting does not help any further; however, the hybrid rerouting scheme can improve the blocking performance significantly. Abstract:It has been widely recognized that the multipath routing can be fundamentally more efficient than the traditional approach of routing along single path. A self-adaptive traffic splitting algorithm, called Dynamic Weighted Round-Robin (DWRR), has been developed to distribute traffic fairly in term of the weight so as to obtain good performance of network load balance. In addition, DWRR can get lower end-to-end delay in multipath routing and may adapt to the path state to reduce the congestion. Result obtained from the simulations shows that DWRR is efficient in maintaining network load balance and gets high performance in reducing the end-to-end delay.

Abstract:An adaptive hybrid reservation protocol (AHRP) is proposed for the purpose of quickly and efficiently establishing a lightpath in dynamic wavelength routed networks. This protocol uses a special reservation-and-probe (RESV_PROB) packet and extends the signaling to integrate forward reservation and backward reservation into one monolithic process. To decrease the blocking probability that happens in cases where two end nodes associated with a specific link simultaneously reserve the same wavelength, an adaptive wavelength selection policy is specially employed in AHRP. A discrete-event simulation tool based on ns-2 is developed to investigate AHRP's performance, including its blocking probability, average lightpath setup delay, and signaling overhead. AHRP is also compared with existing protocols. Results show that during highly dynamic traffic conditions, AHRP possesses the lowest blocking probability, shorter setup delay, and less signaling overhead.

Abstract:Multi-granularity optical cross-connect (MG-OXC) has been proposed to reduce the complexity and size of optical switch. This paper studies dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithm for WDM optical networks consisting of MG-OXCs. We present an online adaptive routing algorithm to solve this problem. Simulation results show that for a two-stage multi-granularity optical network, the fiber-tunnel topology can greatly affect the blocking probability. To further improve the network performance, a fiber-tunnel topology optimization algorithm is proposed, and simulation results show that the blocking probability can be drastically reduced after fiber-tunnel topology reconfiguration.

Abstract:Internet service provider faces a daunting challenge in provisioning network efficiently. We introduce a proactive multipath routing scheme that tries to route traffic according to its built-in properties. Based on mathematical analysis, our approach disperses incoming traffic flows onto multiple paths according to path qualities. Long-lived flows are detected and migrated to the shortest path if their QoS could be guaranteed there. Suggesting non-disjoint path set, four types of dispersion policies are analyzed, and flow classification policy which relates flow trigger with link state update period is investigated. Simulation experiments show that our approach outperforms traditional single path routing significantly.
