Abstract:Indoor air quality with reference to combustion-generated air pollutants was examined in some Harbin houses representing different incomes. These houses are equipped with various appliances using town gas, natural gas, kerosene and coal. Investigated pollutants include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and smoke. Pollutant concentrations were sometimes found to exceed the indoor air quality standards (GB/T18883-2002). Furthermore, houses equipped with coal cookers were the most polluted premises. Pollutant concentrations decreased with distance from the kitchen, smoke concentrations were greatly decreased in living room compared with those recorded in the kitchens. CO concentrations reached high level during the winter. However, better ventilation was found to greatly improve indoor air quality. It is also concluded that the Harbin inner city population using coal cookers is at high risk for the deleterious effects of combustion-generated pollutants.
