Abstract:Firstly, we characterize the partially ordered K-0 groups of some rings. Secondly, let R he a ring, we discuss the problem when the pre-order on K-0(R) is actually a partial order and when Tor(K-0(R)) is a convex subgroup of K-0(R). Finally, we examine the transfer of some ordering properties (such as partial order, unperforated, interpolation property) on K-0 groups of rings to the K-0 groups of pullbacks. Let R be a pullback of R-1 and R-2 over S, under some suitable conditions, we prove that if each K-0(R-i) (i = 1, 2) is a dimension group, then so is K-0(R).

Abstract:We analyse the subgroup structure of direct products of groups. Earlier work on this topic has revealed that higher finiteness properties play a crucial role in determining which groups appear as subgroups of direct products of free groups or limit groups. Here, we seek to relate the finiteness properties of a subgroup to the way it is embedded in the ambient product. To this end we formulate a conjecture on finiteness properties of fibre products of groups. We present different approaches to this conjecture, proving a general result on finite generation of homology groups of fibre products and, for certain special cases, results on the stronger finiteness properties F_n and FP_n.

Abstract:As groupoids generalize groups, motivated by group extensions we consider a kind of fibrations of Lie groupoids, called locally topological product Lie groupoid fibrations with fiber $\sf A$, i.e., \[ 1\rightarrow {\sf A} \rightarrow {\sf G} \rightarrow {\sf K}\rightarrow 1 \] where $\sf A,\sf G$ and $\sf K$ are Lie groupoids. Similar to the theory of group extensions, we show that the existence of locally topological product Lie groupoid fibrations with fiber $\sf A$ over $\sf K$ is obstructed by a groupoid cohomology of $H^3_{\bar \Lambda}({\sf K},Z_{\sf A})$, and these locally topological product Lie groupoid fibrations are classified by $H^2_{\bar \Lambda}({\sf K},Z_{\sf A})$ once exists. Here $Z_{\sf A}$ is the center of $\sf A$. This generalizes the theory of group extensions, of gerbes over manifolds/groupoids and etc.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective curve over a finite field F with q elements. For m⩾1, let Xm be the curve X over the finite field Fm, the m-th extension of F. Let Kn(m) be the K-group Kn(Xm) of the smooth projective curve Xm. In this paper, we study the structure of the groups Kn(m). If l is a prime, we establish an analogue of Iwasawa theorem in algebraic number theory for the orders of the l-primary part Kn(lm){l} of Kn(lm). In particular, when X is an elliptic curve E defined over F, our method determines the structure of Kn(E). Our results can be applied to construct an efficient DL system in elliptic cryptography.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting faithfully on a finite set $\Omega$. For a positive integer $k$, $G$ acts naturally on the Catesian product $\Omega^k := \Omega \times ...\times \Omega$. In this paper, we prove that finite nilpotent group $G$ with $2\nmid |G|$ is a totally $k$-closed group if and only if $G$ is abelian with $n(G)\leq k-1$ or cyclic, where $n(G)$ is the number of invariant factors in the invariant factor decomposition of $G$.

The structure and density of $k$-product-free sets in the free semigroup

Abstract:The free semigroup $\mathcal{F}$ over a finite alphabet $\mathcal{A}$ is the set of all finite words with letters from $\mathcal{A}$ equipped with the operation of concatenation. A subset $S$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is $k$-product-free if no element of $S$ can be obtained by concatenating $k$ words from $S$, and strongly $k$-product-free if no element of $S$ is a (non-trivial) concatenation of at most $k$ words from $S$. We prove that a $k$-product-free subset of $\mathcal{F}$ has upper Banach density at most $1/\rho(k)$, where $\rho(k) = \min\{\ell \colon \ell \nmid k - 1\}$. We also determine the structure of the extremal $k$-product-free subsets for all $k \notin \{3, 5, 7, 13\}$; a special case of this proves a conjecture of Leader, Letzter, Narayanan, and Walters. We further determine the structure of all strongly $k$-product-free sets with maximum density. Finally, we prove that $k$-product-free subsets of the free group have upper Banach density at most $1/\rho(k)$, which confirms a conjecture of Ortega, Rué, and Serra.

Fibred surfaces and their unitary rank

Abstract:Let $f\colon S\to B$ a fibred surface with fibres of genus $g\geq 2$ and base curve of genus $b$. Let $u_f$ be its unitary rank. We prove many new slope inequalities involving $u_f$ and some other invariants of the fibration. As applications: (1) we prove a new Xiao-type bound on $u_f$ with respect to $g$ for non-isotrivial fibrations: \[ u_f< g\frac{5g-2}{6g-3}. \] In particular this imples that if $f$ is not locally trivial and $u_f=g-1$ is maximal, then $g\leq 6$; (2) we prove a result in the direction of the Coleman-Oort conjecture: a new constrain on the rank of the (-1,0) part of the maximal unitary Higgs subbundle of a curve generically contained in the Torelli locus; (3) we study in the detail the extremal case (for non-isotrivial $f$) where $u_f=g-1$, giving many constrains for the case $g=6$, $u_f=5$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an elementary abelian $p$-group. We calculate $K_2(\mathbb{Z}[G]/I)$ for certain ideals $I \subseteq \mathbb{Z}[G]$ of the finite $p$-power index through computations of Dennis-Stein symbols. As an application, for $p$ an odd prime, we give a complete description of the relative group $SK_1(\mathbb{Z}[G],p^k\mathbb{Z}[G])$ and obtain more precise lower bounds of the prank of $K_2(\mathbb{Z}[G])$ and $Wh_2(G)$.

Abstract:We give a lower bound for the Waring rank and cactus rank of forms that are invariant under an action of a connected algebraic group. We use this to improve the Ranestad--Schreyer--Shafiei lower bounds for the Waring ranks and cactus ranks of determinants of generic matrices, Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, and determinants of generic symmetric matrices.

Abstract:We compute the first two k-invariants of the Picard spectra of $KU$ and $KO$ by analyzing their Picard groupoids and constructing their unit spectra as global sections of sheaves on the category of manifolds. This allows us to determine the E_\infty-structures of their truncations Pic(KU)[0,3] and Pic(KO)[0,2]. It follows that these truncated Picard spaces represent: the Brauer groups of Z/2-graded algebra bundles of Donovan-Karoubi, Moutuou and Maycock; the Brauer groups of super 2-lines; and the K-theory twists of Freed, Hopkins and Teleman. Our results also imply that that these spaces represent twists of String and Spin structures on manifolds and can be used to twist tmf-cohomology. Finally, we are able to identify pic(KU)[0,3] with a cotruncation of the Anderson dual of the sphere spectrum.

On Knotted Subgroups

Abstract:In this article, we defined a knotted subgroup of a Lie group and considered a geometric notion of equivalence among them. We characterized these knotted subgroups in terms of one-parameter subgroups and provided examples in the case of SU(2) and SU(3). Infinitesimal elements that give rise to knotted subgroups of SU(n) and SO(n) are characterized as well. Canonical forms for their knotted subgroups are presented and their properties are described in terms of the spectrum of the corresponding infinitesimal elements. Finally, knotted subgroups of SL(2,R) are completely classified using direct computation while knotted subgroups of SL(3,R) are completely classified using Jordan canonical forms.

Abstract:In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other. This leads to many new examples of groups not presentable by products, including all groups with infinitely many ends, the (outer) automorphism groups of free groups, Thompson's groups, and even some elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:Let R be a ring and let J(R) be the Jacobson radical of R. We discuss the problem of determining when the central idempotents in R/J(R) can be lifted to R. If R is a noetherian (artinian) ring, we give some conditions relative to the ranks of K-0 groups under which the central idempotents in R/J(R) can be lifted. In particular, when R is semilocal, these conditions are necessary and sufficient. Moreover, we consider ranks of K-0 groups of pullbacks of rings and obtain the upper and lower bounds on them under some suitable conditions.
