Abstract:The sour water quality of sour water stripper was analyzed. The appropriate hydrocyclone was developed by virtual design. The verification tests showed that the separation efficiency of the hydrocyclone designed was greater than 80% and that of 15μm oil droplets was about 70%.

Abstract:Highlights • A systematical design method was established for a preliminary water separator. • The optimal structure size of the separator was found by machine learning method. • The dimensionless parameter Hy is used as the similar criterion for the serialization design. • The adverse effect caused by the amplification effect is eliminated. Preliminary water separators can effectively solve the problem of high-water-cut produced fluids in oil wells. In this study, we propose a co-design method for the serialization of an axial inlet preliminary water separator based on the combination of cyclone separation theory, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, response surface method (RSM) optimization, experimental verification, and a scale-up strategy (SUS). For an inlet water cut ≥ 70%, the water separation rate was ≥ 50% and the oil concentration of heavy phase outlet (HPO) was ≤ 1000 mg/L. The indoor experimental results indicated that the performance of the preliminary water separator could achieve better results obtained through the CFD simulation results were taken as sample points and the optimal structural size was found by machine learning method (MLM). The field pilot test results showed that the Hy similarity criterion based SUS did not affect the separation effect. For water cut in the range of 85.0–92.7%, the water separation rate was ≥ 50% and the HPO oil concentration was < 1321.6 mg/L. Our results can provide reference and guidance for the design and optimization of hydrocyclones for preliminary water separation of oilfield produced fluids. Separation performance of hydrocyclone oil removal device influenced by oil droplet trajectory and oil drop characteristics

Abstract:Cyclone separation is an effective method for the treatment of oily wastewater from offshore oil production platforms. There is a lack of research on the impact of dispersion on the separation efficiency of current liquid-liquid separation hydrocyclones. A numerical simulation method was used to study the effect of the oil droplet characteristic parameters on the separation efficiency of a hydrocyclone oil removal device. An analysis of the trajectory of oil droplets revealed the oil removal mechanism of the hydrocyclone oil removal device: under the guidance of tangential velocity, the oil-water mixed fluid in the equipment generates different centrifugal forces due to the density difference, so oil and water adopt different flow paths to flow out. The effects of the particle diameter, velocity, and concentration of the inlet oil droplet on the separation efficiency were investigated. The droplet size had a positive effect on the separation efficiency, the oil concentration had a negative effect on the separation efficiency, and the speed of the oil drop was directly proportional to the separation efficiency within a certain range. These studies improved the basis for the efficient application of hydrocyclone oil removal devices.
Strengthened oil-water separation by swirl vane hydrocyclone based on short-circuit flow regulation

Abstract:Hydrocyclones make it possible to separate oil/water efficiently. Short-circuit flow (SCF), which is a local secondary vortex in hydrocyclones, significantly restricts efficient separation. This study proposes a novel swirl vane hydrocyclone to regulate the trajectory of the SCF to reduce the SCF rate. The separation process in the hydrocyclone field is calculated using computational fluid dynamics coupled with the population balance modeling. The strengthened separation mechanism by the swirl vane is revealed, and the response of structural parameters, such as the angle, numbers, and width of the swirl vane, to the SCF rate and separation efficiency is investigated using the response surface optimization method. The results show that the swirl vane structure prevents the direct generation of SCF, strengthens the outward migration of the heavy-phase droplets, and reduces the probability of droplet breakage. The optimal structural parameters of the swirl vane are a swirl vane angle of 31°, vane number of 6 pcs, and vane width of 2 mm, which has the lowest SCF rate of 1.62 %. The separation efficiency increases by 21.53 %, and the SCF rate decreases by 85.33 % compared with a conventional hydrocyclone. This study provides theoretical guidance and data support for SCF regulation and the development of oil-water separation hydrocyclone.

Abstract:A new hydrocyclone H2L8 with successive cone structure was developed. It has better separating performance than Thew and Amoco hydrocyclone. When the flow is 1.69-1.73 m/hr, the pressure of the water phase is 0.2 MPa, the ratio of oil phase flow to water phase flow at the outlet of the hydrocyclone is 1:100. When the oil concentration at the inlet is < 15,306 mg/L, the efficiency of the hydrocyclone reaches 65-99% and oil concentration in water phase is 9-61 mg/L.

Abstract:The tubular dynamic hydrocyclone (TDH) holds great potential for the pre-deoiling of offshore oil platforms. However, the shear and turbulence in the flow field can cause the oil droplets, the dispersed phase in water, to break up when the swirling flow is produced by the swirler. A design method is proposed for the low-shear rotary swirler (LSRS) of TDH, the aim of which is to reduce the shear force and local turbulence during the fluid forming swirling flow. The blade setting angle of the LSRS is calculated based on the relative velocity vector between the fluid and the swirler. The distribution characteristics of the tangential velocity and turbulence in the TDH with LSRS are simulated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The maximum stable droplet diameter is analyzed. The results show that the shear stress and turbulence energy dissipation rates are reduced by 74.6% and 68.5%, respectively, and that the stable droplet diameter is increased by more than 60%, compared to the conventional rotating swirler. In addition, a TDH prototype with LSRS was tested in an offshore oil field by continuous operation for more than 36 h. The average separation efficiency was 83%, and the average underflow oil concentration was 27 mg/L. The research also found that the drastic changes in the tangential velocity along the axial direction were critical to shear. Moreover, the results make up for the deficiency of the spatial variation of the tangential velocity in the dynamic cyclone separator.

Enhancement of the classification and recovery process of fine mineral particles via a newly developed volute feed hydrocyclone

Abstract:Ore resources in the mining process form a large number of unmanageable tailings, mostly inhalable fine mineral particles, into the environment will cause serious pollution, and recycling is a precious resource. The cyclone classification provides the possibility for the recovery and exploitation of fine particles, but the recovery and utilization rate of conventional cyclone separation is seriously low, and the performance urgently should be optimized. In the present study, a new type of volute feed was proposed to strengthen the classification and recovery process of fine mineral particles. Combined with numerical simulation and experimental research, the effects of various structural parameters and operating parameters on the flow field distribution, particle motion, and classification performance were systematically examined. The obtained results reveal that the new volute feed structure can effectively reduce the internal turbulence and improve the flow field stability and particle classification efficiency. Compared with the traditional hydrocyclone, the classification efficiency of fine particles with new feed structure increases by 10-18%. Increasing underflow diameter and feed pressure and reducing overflow diameter and feed concentration are also beneficial to lessening classification particle size and enhancing classification performance. The currently achieved outcomes can provide valuable guidelines for further development of novel hydrocyclones.

Abstract:The fluid flow and oil-water separation were simulated using a Reynolds stress transport equationmodel of turbulence in water flow and a stochastic model of oil droplet motion. Simulation results give the axialand tangential velocity components, the pressure and turbulence intensity distribution and droplet trajectories fora hydrocyclone of F type and a hydrocyclone proposed by the present authors. The flow field predictions are inqualitative agreement with the LDV measurements. The results show that the proposed hydrocyclone has betterperformance than the hydrocyclone of F type due to creating stronger centrifugal force and lower axial velocity.

Abstract:In many offshore fields, water takes up 90 % of the produced fluid. The compact and efficient centrifugal pre-separation method is expected to replace the traditional sedimentation separator, which takes up a large area and is low in efficiency. The centrifugal separator can achieve rapid separation of produced fluids in the compact space of offshore platforms. However, conventional tangential inlet or axial hydrocyclone is poor-performed for high water content mixture due to droplet breakage caused by tangential inlet and unstable oil core in outlet section caused by axial inlet. In this paper, based on experiment and numerical simulation, a new type of efficient oil–water separator of high separation accuracy is constructed by the structural innovation of adding oil collecting pipe. In the treatment of 10 % oil mixture, when the inlet flow rate was 0.5 m/s, the volume fraction of oil at the oil outlet can reach 45 % and the volume fraction of oil at the water outlet can be reduced to 0.0724 %. According to the laboratory-scale tests, the novel separator shows great potential in oil field with high water content or offshore platforms.

Abstract:The cyclone plays an important role in the downhole oil-water separator during artificial lift for high water cut oil well, the processes of oil-water separation is completing in the cyclone. The oil-water cyclone separator was designed based on the oil and water density contrast and the cyclone separation theory; the laboratory experiment of cyclone separator was carried out and the relationship of the cyclone oil cut of apex and split ratio, oil-water separation efficiency and the velocity , the pressure loss of the cyclone and the velocity were also studied. When the reinjectivity is within 70% of the produced volume, cyclone separator has good water-oil separation ability, split ratio increased with the increase of the vecolity, when the flow vecolity reached 0.25m/s, the split ratio over 30%. But with the increase of the velocity, the increased rate of the split ratio is reduced. The relationship of the flow rate and cyclone intrinsic pressure loss is nonlinear exponential curve.

Abstract:Because of the pressing demand for environmental governance and resource utilization of pollutants, the separation of oil in oily wastewater has become a research hotspot in water treatment, with swirl de-oiling being one of the most effective separation technologies. However, the current swirl separation technology has significant shortcomings when separating microfine and heavy oil droplets. In this study, a new process based on composite force field enhanced separation was developed to enhance swirl separation of microfine and heavy oils by injecting microbubbles into the axial inlet hydrocyclone. The performance between the standard swirl and the proposed swirl air flotation processes in separating microfine and heavy oil was evaluated for overall separation efficiency, particle grade efficiency, and outlet particle size distribution. The results showed that the swirl air flotation process enhanced the separation efficiency by 24.2 % and 15.9 % for heavy oil (density of 950 kg/m 3 ) and light oil (density of 825 kg/m 3 ) with particle size distribution of EP2, respectively. The main enhancement was in the particle size range of 11.2–58.9 μm, and the largest enhancement in separation capability was achieved for oil droplets with a particle size of 16.4–35.3 μm, with an enhancement of approximately 18 %. Furthermore, the introduction of a swirl-stabilizing tube improved the separation effect and anti-fluctuation of the device. This study provides insights supporting practical applications of swirl air flotation and a provides basis for further studies aimed at broadening the axial inlet hydrocyclone application range.

Abstract:This manuscript proposes a three-product hydrocyclone with overflow reseparation to reduce the particle misplacement in overflow, which achieves secondary separation by utilizing the after-energy of internal swirling flow. Numerical simulations and physical tests were applied to investigate the separation performance. The simulation results revealed that the coarser particles entrapped were effectively recovered by sideflow, the recovery of 20 μm particles in the overflow decreased by 16.71 % ~ 23.09 % with significant fineness improvement compared with conventional hydrocyclone. The intensity of the internal centrifugal field decreased with the overflow separation chamber expanded, which resulted in an increased probability of particle misplacement during overflow. The test results revealed that the particle content of more than 20 μm in overflow was reduced by 2.44 % compared with conventional hydrocyclone, reducing the overflow separation chamber increased the sideflow ratio and solid phase yield, increased the difference in fineness between sideflow and overflow, and improved the narrow-grain separation performance.

Abstract:The development of non-thermal separation techniques can provide new ideas for efficient and low-consumption separation of oil-water mixtures. As a typical non-thermal separation equipment, the separation performance of hydrocyclone is limited by the short-circuit flow (SCF). In this study, an annular vortex finder hydrocyclone (AVFH) is proposed by the structural innovation of increasing the annular vortex finder (AVF) to solve the problem of SCF. The effects of AVF structure with different insertion depths on the flow field characteristics and separation performance of the hydrocyclone were investigated by particle image velocimetry experiments and performance experiments. The results indicate that the SCF can be significantly reduced by increasing the AVF structure. When the inlet velocity was 5 m/s, the SCF rate of AVFH-S was reduced to 0. The AVFH-S achieves a maximum separation efficiency of 84.71 %, which is 4.90 % higher than that of the VFH-C. Compared with the existing disc centrifuge process, the separation efficiency after AVFH-S treatment increased by 6.80 %. This study provides theoretical support for regulating SCF to improve the separation efficiency of hydrocyclone, and lays a foundation for the optimization and expansion of the application of non-thermal separation equipment.

Abstract:Hydrocyclone tester used for oil-water separation was set up.The pressure characteristics and separating performance were researched.Under the condition of the feed flow is 2.9 m~3/h and the pressure drop between inlet and overflow is 0.21 MPa,the water content can decrease from 5%~8% to less than 0.45% and mean dewatering ratio is about 90%.The efficiency is not obvious when 160 mT magnetism was used to intensify hydrocyclone separation.

Abstract:Developments in different industries are leading to increased fine particles in industrial wastewater. Fine particle grading, separation, and recycling involve many problems, and the separation quality is directly related to the economic benefits and environmental effects. In this study, a mini-hydrocyclone with a nominal diameter of 25 mm was designed and tested for the separation of fine catalyst particles from water in the laboratory. The method was also used in the industrial methanol-to-olefin (MTO) quench water treatment process. Under certain feed conditions in the laboratory experiment, the separation efficiency of the mini-hydrocyclone was around 88% and the particle cut size d(50) was 1.70 mu m. The removal rate of particles larger than 3 mu m reached >= 85%. The two stages of the mini-hydrocyclone separation process (i.e., clarification and concentrating) were examined, and the results showed that the process had high throughput and low loss. Recovery of MTO quench water by mini-hydroyclone and steam-stripping treatment were performed in an industrial plant. The cut size d(50) in the industrial application was 1.68 mu m, which was close to that in the laboratory experiment. The stripping process removed ketone and methanol, which are poisonous and harmful components that prevent MTO quench water recovery. Furthermore, catalyst particles larger than 5 mu m were almost completely recycled. The recovery process of MTO quench water by mini-hydroyclone and steam-stripping treatment was successful. These results demonstrated that mini-hydrocyclone separation can be combined with other methods for the efficient treatment of industrial wastewater with fine particles. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Vinyl chloride(VCM) and water were be the research objects, by changing the swirl cone angle and inlet flow, Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) was used to test the hydrocyclone's flow field. By comparative analysis its internal laws, the best operating conditions of vinyle chloride dehydration were obtained. A 35mm diameter VCM dehydration-type liquid-liquid hydrocyclone was developed, and it was used in PVC production industry, product quality and devices continuous operation were improved. Significant economics and social benefits were obtained.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method was used to simulate the flow fields inside(hydrocyclone) in order to improve its separation efficiency.The RSM(Rreynolds stress model) turbulent model,which abandons the isotropic eddy-viscosity hypothesis,was used to analyze the oil-water two-phase flow in the hydrocyclone,combined with the ASM(algebraic slip mixture model) model of oil droplets.The well-known SIMPLE algorithm combined with the PSIC method was adopted.Simulation of the separating performance was done for three-cone geometrical configurations of hydrocyclones.The concentration distribution,slip velocity and grade efficiency curve were given.Simulation result shows that an increase in feed flow rate can improve the grade efficiency.When the inlet flow rate is 2.0 m~3/h,20 μm oil droplet are almost separated from water.Predicted separating performance is in good agreement with those obtained by tests.

Abstract:Currently, the offshore petroleum in the world is spreading into sea deeper and deeper. Meanwhile, the exploitations of offshore petroleum and gas in China are mainly focusing on the sea area with water depth no more than 300 meters. Technologies and equipments used to deep-water petroleum and gas exploitation are not enough. This paper proposes an active oil-water hydrocyclone separator with three outlets which have good advantages due to its active controllable rotation of whirling cylinder and continuing separation for the oil-water mixed transitional layer. It is difficult to use equipment to reveal directly the fluid field in the screw-type rotating blade. By using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM), numerical simulation of the internal flow field of the oil-water separator can be revealed, so some relations between efficiency and performance parameter can be gotten easily. Furthermore, we build an experiment system which is designed to test separation performance, although the final experimental results is not so idealized, we find the difference between experimental data and computational result is little. Through this research, it is expected to offer some theoretical basis and design guidance to deep water oil-water separation technology.
Integrated Hydrocyclone and Flotation Separation Technology for Water Preseparation and Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:In view of the disadvantages of the current water preseparation facilities in a high water-cut oilfield, a high efficient integrated technology of the hydrocyclone, the self- dissolved gas flotation, the second stage flotation and the inclined plate coalescence for the water preseparation and the wastewater treatment is proposed, and the laboratory equipment is developed. With this equipment for the water preseparation and the wastewater treatment, 38% of the wastewater can be preseparated, and the outlet content of oil and suspended solids can be controlled under 15 mg/L and 5 mg/L, respectively, when the inlet water-cut is more than 80% and the concentration of suspended solids is less than 300 mg/L. With its high efficiency, the short process flow, the small size and the low investment, the equipment can be used for the water preseparation and the wastewater treatment at transfer stations of gathering systems and marginal oilfields, to bring about great economic benefits.

THE EXPERIMENTS FOR DESALTING AND DEWATERING OF CRUDE BY HYDROCYCLONES

Abstract:In order to overcome the shortcomings of electrical desalting system, such as complicated system, larger equipment volume and difficult to maintain, the complex high tension electricity system, a new process for desalting of crude based on hydrocyclone technology was designed. An industrial sidetrack desalting tester with a desalting capacity of 3.0 m~3/h by hydrocyclone in 8.0 Mt/a crude-oil distillation unit was set up. The effects of several dimensionless units, such as Reynolds number, Euler number, and pressure drop ratio were studied. Under the Reynolds number of inlet ranging from 5000 to 5800, the water volume fraction in crude oil was decreased from the range of 5%-8% to less than 0.40% and the salt concentration was reduced from 8 mg/l to below 3 mg/l after handled.

Abstract:Aerosol particle (especially PM2.5 and PM10) is one of the most serious environmental pollution worldwide and is urging the development of separation technology. Cyclonic centrifugation devoted to the separation of suspension systems whose component have a significant density difference, however, it has been difficult to separate the fine particles whose size are of several microns or sub-micron. Therefore, a series of cyclones of different sizes (cylinder diameter D of 25 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm) and different vortex finder depth (0.5D, 0.6D, 0.7D, 0.8D, 0.9D) were designed to separate aerosol fine particles. The result showed that the cyclone whose diameter was 75 mm and vortex finder depth was 0.7D was most efficient and energy saving. The efficiency of HLG75 cyclone reached 95% at a flow rate of 35.5 m(3)/h and kept above 80% within the range of 24-68 m(3)/h. When the cyclones were tested under underflow leakage condition, HLG75 cyclone also acquired a most significant improvement, from 95% to 98%, at a split factor of 11.2%. Based on the research above, an improvement to the gas-liquid cyclonic separation unit was put forward, that is, inducing the gas at the under-flow exit to maintain the stable gas-leaking condition of each cyclone in avoidance to the inhaling of separated liquid.
