Abstract:A CO2 collective scattering system has been developed to measure medium and high-k density fluctuation on HT-7 tokamak. Energy confinement and high-k density fluctuation are studied in ohmic discharges. The saturation of confinement was observed at approximately n¯e>2.5×1019 m−3. For kθ=23 cm−1 turbulence, it is found that fluctuation levels have great increase for n¯e>2.5×1019 m−3, and simultaneously a high frequency turbulence feature appear in the frequency spectra. For kθ=14 cm−1 turbulence, it is observed that fluctuation levels have no changes in uncertainties and the spectra are similar at all discharges in this experiment.

Abstract:An experimental study of medium and high-k density fluctuations has been performed during lower hybrid current drive on HT-7 tokamak. When the lower hybrid power exceeded about 500 kW, the Ohmic normalized fluctuation level of channel kθ=12 cm−1 dropped to a low level, and the Ohmic normalized fluctuation level of channel kθ=24 cm−1 was still increasing while the frequency spectrum of density fluctuation will grow a peak at about 200 kHz in channel kθ=24 cm−1.

Abstract:Significant experimental advances have been made on HL-2A tokamak along with substantial improvement and development of hardware. The three dimensional spectral structures of the low frequency zonal flow, the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and quasi-mode-like low frequency fluctuations have been observed simultaneously for the first time. In addition, the spectral structure of the density fluctuation at GAM frequency is also identified. A spontaneous particle transport barrier has been observed in Ohmic discharges without any external momentum input. The barrier is evidenced by particle perturbation study using modulated SMBI and microwave reflectometry. The non-local transport effect with new features induced by SMBI has been investigated. The e-fishbone instability excited by energetic electrons of non-Maxwellian distribution has been investigated via 10-channel CdTe hard x-ray detector. It is found that the e-fishbone is correlated with the existence of energetic electrons of 30-70 keV. The experiment shows that the suppression of m/n = 2/1 tearing modes can be sustained by ECRH with low modulation frequency of about 10 Hz. Continuous confinement improvement is obtained after the mode suppression.

Abstract:The physics experiments on the HL-2A tokamak have been focused on confinement improvement, particle and thermal transport, zonal flow and turbulence, filament characteristics, energetic particle induced modes and plasma fuelling efficiency since 2008. ELMy H-mode discharges are achieved in a lower density regime using a combination of NBI heating with ECRH. The power threshold is found to increase with a decrease in density, almost independent of the launching order of the ECRH and NBI heating power. The pedestal density profiles in the H-mode discharges are measured. The particle outward convection is observed during the pump-out transient phase with ECRH. The negative density perturbation (pump-out) is observed to propagate much faster than the positive one caused by out-gassing. The core electron thermal transport reduction triggered by far off-axis ECRH switch-off is investigated. The coexistence of low frequency zonal flow (LFZF) and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is observed. The dependence of the intensities of LFZFs and GAMs on the safety factor and ECRH power is identified. The 3D spatial structures of plasma filaments are measured in the boundary plasma and large-scale structures along a magnetic field line analysed for the first time. The beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs), excited by large magnetic islands (m-BAE) and by energetic electrons (e-BAE), are observed. The results for the study of fuelling efficiency and penetration characteristics of supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) are described.

Abstract:An experimental study of medium and high-k density fluctuations has been performed during low hybrid current drive (LHCD) in the HT-7 tokamak. Two series of plasma discharges in different plasma current with a limiter configuration were conducted in which the injected LHW power was gradually increased. The fluctuation level of the mode in channel kθ=12 cm−1 and kθ=20 cm−1 is related to the q profile, and the normalized frequency spectrum is found to be independent of the LHW power.

Abstract:A three channel CO2 laser forward scattering diagnostic system was set up to study the core plasma density fluctuation in the HT-7 tokamak. The range of the wavenumber measurement in the poloidal direction was kθ = 12 cm−1 to 34 cm−1 and the wavenumber resolution was Δk = 2.5 cm−1. The wavenumber spectrum, the coexisting modes and the micro-instability eruption in experiments are presented.

Abstract:The behavior of the electron anomalous heat transport is a critical issue the reversed shear configurations in ignited plasma, where a-particle heating raises the electron temperature above the ion temperature. The trapped electron modes (TEM) driven turbulence and the electron temperature gradient (ETG) are possible candidates to explain the electron heat transport and the observed profile stiffness. Both of them have a threshold (▽Te/ Te )c, and above the threshold, the transport increases strongly, which tends to keep the Te profile close to (▽Te/ Te )c. To understand the anomalous transport, turbulence measurements over a wide range in wavenumbers have been undertaken on a variety of fusion research devices [1-4]. For understanding the behavior of electron scale micro-instabilities in different plasma current profiles, the comparison between micro-instabilities of different wavenumber should be discussed in detail, which is one of the major purposes of this paper.

Abstract:Electrostatic fluctuations and turbulence-induced particle flux have been investigated in the plasma boundary region of the HT-7 superconducting tokamak. There is a poloidal velocity shear layer driven by Er×BT located in the vicinity of the limiter radius, which has a suppression effect on the fluctuations and results in reductions in the normalized fluctuation level, coherence between the two plasma parameter fluctuations of φp, Te and ne. The radial decorrelation effect of the poloidal velocity shear causes a decrease in the turbulent flux. The time evolution of the turbulent flux shows bursts in turbulent transport. The frequency range where the turbulent flux, which comes in bursts, is dominant has been identified. It is in this frequency range that the spectral region with power decay close to 1/f of the power spectrum of the floating voltage fluctuation has been found. This result could be a signature of the turbulent transport close to instability threholds.

Abstract:The small scale density fluctuations in the interior of HT-6M Ohmic plasma have been studied by CO2 laser collective scattering system in deuterium discharges covering a wide range of nqa (chord-average density times safety factor at the limiter) and energy confinement time. The relative density fluctuation level in the interior is inversely proportional to the toroidal magnetic field and average density, and the energy confinement time (tau) E decreases with the fluctuation level increasing in the region where (tau) E linearly increases with nq0.5a and satisfies the Goldston scaling law. It is suggested that the microturbulence in the interior zone is responsible for anomalous transport in tokamaks.

Abstract:In this paper, we present experimental studies of both high-k(r) ( cm(-1), and , respectively; ) and high- ( cm(-1), and , respectively; ) turbulence behavior during an ohmic energy confinement degradation phase in experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST). High-k(r) turbulence from density fluctuation at and high- turbulence from density fluctuation at -0.97 were measured by tangential and poloidal CO2 laser collective scattering diagnostics, respectively. Note that k(r), , and are radial wavenumber, poloidal wavenumber, perpendicular wavenumber and ion gyroradius at electron temperature, respectively. Both high-k(r)/ turbulence power and energy confinement time are found to be temporally correlated to line-averaged electron density n(e) in the plasma current flat-top phase (I-p = 0.4 MA): when the n(e) shows continuous increase/decrease, the high-k(r)/ turbulence power increases/decreases correspondingly and the shows corresponding decrease/increase; the stable n(e) is related to stable both and high-k(r)/ turbulence power. Statistical results of high-k(r)/ turbulence power versus further imply that high-k(r)/ turbulence shows a strong correlation with plasma energy confinement degradation in high line-averaged n(e) condition, but high-k(r) and high- turbulence have relatively weak and no dependence on the transition between linear range in low-n(e) condition and energy confinement degradation in the high-n(e) condition, respectively. Moreover, profiles of electron temperature T-e and n(e) as well as their normalized gradients in a part of high- density fluctuation measurement region also have been given to qualitatively explain the enhancement of turbulence power with the increase of line-averaged n(e).

Abstract:The nature of runaway electrons is such that the confinement and dynamics of the electrons can be strongly affected by magnetic fluctuations in plasma. Experimental results in the HT-7 tokamak indicated significant losses of runaway electrons due to magnetic fluctuations, but the loss processes did not only rely on the fluctuation amplitude. Efficient radial runaway transport required that there were no more than small regions of the plasma volume in which there was very low transport of runaways. A radial runaway diffusion coefficient of Dr≈10 m2s-1 was derived for the loss processes, and diffusion coefficient near the resonant magnetic surfaces and shielding factor ϒ=0.8 were deduced. Test particle equations were used to analyze the effect of magnetic fluctuations on runaway dynamics. It was found that the maximum energy that runaways can gain is very sensitive to the value of αs (i.e., the fraction of plasma volume with reduced transport). αs=(0.28−0.33) was found for the loss processes in the experiment, and maximum runaway energy could be controlled in the range of E=(4 MeV-6 MeV) in this case. Additionally, to control the maximum runaway energy below 5 MeV, the normalized electric field needed to be under a critical value Dα=6.8, and the amplitude normalized magnetic fluctuations b̃ needed to be at least of the order of b̃≈3×10−5.

Abstract:The structure of the operation region has been studied in the HT-7 superconducting tokamak, and progress on the extension of the HT-7 ohmic discharge operation region is reported. A density corresponding to 1.2 times the Greenwald limit was achieved by RF boronization. The density limit appears to be connected to the impurity content and the edge parameters, so the best results are obtained with very clean plasmas and peaked electron density profiles. The peaking factors of electron density profiles for different current and line averaged densities were observed. The density behaviour and the fuelling efficiency for gas puffing (20-30%), pellet injection (70-80%) and molecular beam injection (40-50%) were studied. The core crash sawteeth and MHD behaviour, which were induced by an injected pellet, were observed and the events correlated with the change of current profile and reversed magnetic shear. The MARFE phenomena on HT-7 are summarized. The best correlation has been found between the total input ohmic power and the product of the edge line averaged density and Zeff. HT-7 could be easily operated in the high density region MARFE-free using RF boronization.

Abstract:The edge fluctuations and transport in the HT-7 tokamak are investigated using a Langmuir probe array in ohmic and IBW heated discharges. The normalized fluctuation levels are in the range 15-60% and 5-20% for electron density and temperature, respectively, and have the non-Boltzmann relation e (V) over tilde (f)/T-e>(n) over tilde (e)/n(e) > (T) over tilde (e)/T-e. in the SOL of the ohmically heated plasmas. The fluctuation spectra show typical broadband features as observed in other tokamaks. In IBW heated plasmas. the particle confinement is greatly improved and the poloidal velocity shear in the SOL is strongly modified in a manner that is equivalent to an additional poloidal velocity in the electron diamagnetic direction produced by the IBW. A decorrelation in the fluctuations and the suppression of turbulent transport by the effect of the poloidal shear are found to be common mechanisms that are observed From the radial profiles of the fluctuating quantities in all these discharges. Electrostatically driven turbulent transport can account for a significant part of global particle losses in both ohmic and IBW heated plasmas.

Abstract:The particle diffusion coefficient and the convection velocity have been studied by means of the density modulation using pulsed deuterium gas puffing on the HT-7 tokamak. It was observed in ac plasmas that the particle transport coefficient and confinement time of the positive current plasma is different from that of the negative current plasma (Gao X et al 2008 Nucl. Fusion 48 035009) on HT-7 tokamak. New experimental result improved our understanding in ac plasma operation on HT-7 tokamak. It was found that the particle confinement time becomes much higher when the directions of plasma current and toroidal field are uniform. Recently, the density modulation experiments are carried out with advanced liquid lithium limiter on HT-7 tokamak. The interesting results are compared and discussed in detail with previous results under the graphite limiter on HT-7 tokamak.

Abstract:Measurements of boundary fluctuations and fluctuation driven electron fluxes have been performed in ohmic and lower hybrid current drive enhanced confinement plasma using a graphite Langmuir probe array on HT-7 tokamak. The fluctuations are significantly suppressed and the turbulent fluxes are remarkably depressed in the enhanced plasma. We characterized the statistical properties of fluctuations and the particle flux and found a non-Gaussian character in the whole scrape-off layer with minimum deviations from Gaussian in the proximity of the velocity shear layer in ohmic plasma. In the enhanced plasma the deviations in the boundary region are all reduces obviously. The fluctuations and induced electron fluxes show sporadic bursts asymmetric in time and the asymmetry is remarkably weakened in the lower hybrid current driving (LHCD) phase. The results suggest a coupling between the statistical behaviour of fluctuations and the turbulent flow.

Abstract:The fluctuation of the electron temperature has been measured by using the electron cyclotron emission imaging in the Hefei Tokamak-7 (HT-7) plasma. The electron temperature fluctuation with a broadband spectrum shows that it propagates in the electron diamagnetic drift direction, and the mean poloidal wave-number (k) over bar theta is calculated to be about 1.58 cm(-1), or (k) over bar (theta rho s) approximate to 0.34. It indicates that the fluctuation should come from the electron drift wave turbulence. The linear global scaling of the electron temperature fluctuation with the gradient of electron temperature is consistent with the mixing length scale qualitatively. Evolution of spectrum of the fluctuation during the sawtooth oscillation phases is investigated, and the fluctuation is found to increase with the gradient of electron temperature increasing during most phase of the sawtooth oscillation. The results indicate that the electron temperature gradient is probably the driver of the fluctuation enhancement. The steady heat flux driven by electron temperature fluctuation is estimated and compared with the results from power balance estimation.

Abstract:Significant progress in obtaining high performance discharges under a quasi-steady-state condition in the HT-7 super conducting tokamak has been realized since the last IAEA meeting. HT-7 has produced a variety of discharges with βN*H89 > 1-4 for a duration of several to several tens of energy confinement times with a non-inductive driven current of 50-80%. The duration at H89 > 1.5 with βN ~1 has been extended to 130 energy confinement times. A reproducible long pulse discharge with Te ~ 1 keV and central density ~ 1x10m can be easily obtained with a duration of 10-20 seconds. In the HL-1M tokamak, a kinetic MHD instability during ECRH and combined ECRH and LHCD was observed. This instability was driven purely by energetic electrons. Abstract:The statistical properties of plasma fluctuations are characterized in the boundary region of HT-7 tokamak. A non-Gaussian feature is observed in fluctuations of ion saturation current and floating potential in most of the scrape-off layer regions. The statistical properties of fluctuations have a clear radial dependence, showing a near-Gaussian character in the proximity of the velocity shear layer location and another region where the poloidal velocity has a trend to zero. Fluctuations show a bursty character with pulses asymmetric in time and the time asymmetry reaches the minimum around the shear layer. From the results, we can see an obvious coupling of the pulses and the poloidal flow.

Abstract:The magnetic fluctuation level is an important parameter in lower hybrid current-drive (LHCD) plasmas because LHCD has been used to improve plasma performance extensively in the HT-7 tokamak. We investigate the transport of runaway electrons in LHCD plasmas with strong sawteeth in the HT-7 tokamak. A delay time was found to exist between the peak of the soft X-ray sawteeth and the peak of the hard X-ray flux. Based on the delay time, we obtained the transport coefficient of the runaway electrons and the averaged magnetic fluctuation level in sawtooth activity of the plasmas. We found that the diffusion coefficient of the runaway electrons was on the order of D r ∼ 1 m2s−1 and that the magnetic fluctuation level was on the order of b̃ ∼ 10−6.
