Abstract:The formation of a transient internal transport barrier (ITB) is observed after the electron-cyclotron-resonance-heating (ECRH) switch-off in the HL-2A plasmas, characterized by transient increase of central electron temperature. The newly developed correlation reflectometer provided direct measurements showing reduction of turbulence in the region of steepened gradients for the period of ITB formation triggered by the ECRH switch-off. Furthermore, the reduction of core turbulence is correlated in time with the appearance of a low-frequency mode with a spectrally broad poloidal structure that peaks near zero frequency in the core region. These structures have low poloidal mode number, high poloidal correlation, and short radial correlation and are strongly coupled with high-frequency ambient turbulence. Observation indicates that these structures play important roles in the reduction of the core turbulence and in improvements of the core transport after the off-axis ECRH is turned off.

Abstract:O-mode Doppler reflectometer has been successfully developed as an important diagnostic system on HL-2A. It can be used to measure the turbulence propagation in both plasma edge and confinement zone. The Doppler reflectometer system consists of two fixed frequency homodyne receivers: 15 GHz (corresponding to cutoff density of 0.3×1019 m−3) and 33 GHz (corresponding to cutoff density of 1.35×1019 m−3). The Doppler reflectometry principle and the experimental arrangements on HL-2A are presented. Meanwhile, the experimental Doppler reflectometric spectra under different discharge conditions, with and without ECRH, were obtained. Furthermore, the turbulence propagation velocity change and the profile were also observed in different discharge conditions.

Abstract:The behavior of the electron anomalous heat transport is a critical issue the reversed shear configurations in ignited plasma, where a-particle heating raises the electron temperature above the ion temperature. The trapped electron modes (TEM) driven turbulence and the electron temperature gradient (ETG) are possible candidates to explain the electron heat transport and the observed profile stiffness. Both of them have a threshold (▽Te/ Te )c, and above the threshold, the transport increases strongly, which tends to keep the Te profile close to (▽Te/ Te )c. To understand the anomalous transport, turbulence measurements over a wide range in wavenumbers have been undertaken on a variety of fusion research devices [1-4]. For understanding the behavior of electron scale micro-instabilities in different plasma current profiles, the comparison between micro-instabilities of different wavenumber should be discussed in detail, which is one of the major purposes of this paper.
Electron Temperature Gradient Turbulence: Validation in the Columbia Linear Machine Experiments

Abstract:The electron temperature gradient (ETG) mode, which is a dominant universal mechanism for turbulent electron thermal transport in plasmas, is produced and verified in steady state, collisionless hydrogen experiments conducted in the Columbia Linear Machine[1]. Using a variable cathode-to-anode voltage on the inner half of the plasma radius, electron temperature profiles with steep radial gradients are readily produced. The ion temperature is low with a flat radial profile. The plasma has a high frequency spectrum of ETG driftwaves that responses with changes in the temperature gradient as given by theory and simulations. We report modes at ∼ 0.3 − 0.5 MHz, with azimuthal wave numbers m ∼ 14− 16 and parallel wave number k‖ ∼ 0.003 cm −1. We study these results using (1) gyro-fluid simulation code the IFS-DTRANS code and (2) the gyro-kinetic simulation code GTC[2]. The results show that in the linear phase, the dispersion relation is consistent with kinetic theory for a slab ETG model and the radial structure of the fluctuation agrees with the experiment. We report on the the saturation of ETG mechanism including ponderomotive force driving of the low m-modes by beats of the high m-modes. We also examine nonlinear Landau damping of the beat waves. The fluctuation amplitudes are consistent with the theoretical models and comparable that from turbulent E×B mixing formulas. The low frequency drift-ion acoustic waves [3] are stable and absorb energy from the high frequency ETG modes similar to the nonlinear spectrum given for the tokamak plasma by Horton et al. [4]

Abstract:A CO2 collective scattering system has been developed to measure medium and high-k density fluctuation on HT-7 tokamak. Energy confinement and high-k density fluctuation are studied in ohmic discharges. The saturation of confinement was observed at approximately n¯e>2.5×1019 m−3. For kθ=23 cm−1 turbulence, it is found that fluctuation levels have great increase for n¯e>2.5×1019 m−3, and simultaneously a high frequency turbulence feature appear in the frequency spectra. For kθ=14 cm−1 turbulence, it is observed that fluctuation levels have no changes in uncertainties and the spectra are similar at all discharges in this experiment.

Abstract:Electron transport in burning plasmas is more important since fusion products first heat electrons. First-principles simulations of electron turbulence are much more challenging due to the multi-scale dynamics of the electron turbulence, and have been made possible by close collaborations between plasma physicists and computational scientists. The GTC simulations of collisionless trapped electron mode (CTEM) turbulence show that the electron heat transport exhibits a gradual transition from Bohm to gyroBohm scaling when the device size is increased. The deviation from the gyroBohm scaling can be induced by large turbulence eddies, turbulence spreading, and non-diffusive transport processes. Analysis of radial correlation function shows that CTEM turbulence eddies are predominantly microscopic but with a significant tail in the mesoscale. A comprehensive analysis of kinetic and fluid time scales shows that zonal flow shearing is the dominant decorrelation mechanism. The mesoscale eddies result from a dynamical process of linear streamers breaking by zonal flows and merging of microscopic eddies. The radial profile of the electron heat conductivity only follows the profile of fluctuation intensity on a global scale, whereas the ion transport tracks more sensitively the local fluctuation intensity. This suggests the existence of a nondiffusive component in the electron heat flux, which arises from the ballistic radial E X B drift of trapped electrons due to a combination of the presence of mesoscale eddies and the weak de-tuning of the toroidal precessional resonance that drives the CTEM instability. On the other hand, the ion radial excursion is not affected by the mesoscale eddies due to a parallel decorrelation, which is not operational for the trapped electrons because of a bounce averaging process associated with the electron fast motion along magnetic field lines. The presence of the nondiffusive component raises question on the applicability of the usual quasilinear theory for the CTEM electron transport. This is in contrast to the good agreement between the quasilinear transport theory and simulation results of the electron heat transport in electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence, which is regulated by a wave-particle decorrelation. Therefore, the transport in the CTEM turbulence is a fluid-like eddy mixing process even though the linear CTEM instability is driven by a kinetic resonance. In contrast, a kinetic process dominates the transport in the ETG turbulence, which is characterized by macroscopic streamers.

Abstract:The parameter dependence of transition between electrostatic instabilities is studied using gyrokinetic simulation based on a real discharge of steady-state scenario in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. The scan of radial locations shows that trapped electron mode (TEM) dominates around the core while the ion temperature gradient mode (ITG) simultaneously dominates outside. The maximum growth rate of TEM appears around rho = 0.24, where the maximum electron temperature gradient R/L ( Te) locates, rho is the normalized poloidal flux. Effects of the parameters on the transition between TEM and ITG instability are studied at rho = 0.24. It is found that TEM dominates in the scanning with individually changing R/L ( Te) from 2.50 to 25.02 or the density gradient R/L ( n ) from 1.38 to 13.76. Meanwhile, the electron-ion temperature ratio T (e)/T (i) is found to destabilize TEM, the effect of T (e) is more sensitive than that of T (i). The dominant instability diagrams in the (R/L ( Te), R/L ( Ti)) plane at different T (e)/T (i) and R/L ( n ) are numerically obtained, which clearly show the parameter range of the dominant TEM or dominant ITG instability region. It is found that the dominant TEM region becomes narrower in the plane by decreasing R/L ( n ) when T (e)/T (i) > 0.5.

Abstract:The collisionless trapped electron mode turbulence is investigated by global gyrokinetic particle simulation. The zonal flow dominated by low frequency and short wavelength acts as a very important saturation mechanism. The turbulent eddies are mostly microscopic, but with a significant portion in the mesoscale. The ion heat transport is found to be diffusive and follows the local radial profile of the turbulence intensity. However, the electron heat transport demonstrates some nondiffusive features and only follows the global profile of the turbulence intensity. The nondiffusive features of the electron heat transport is further confirmed by nonlognormal statistics of the flux-surface-averaged electron heat flux. The radial and time correlation functions are calculated to obtain the radial correlation length and autocorrelation time. Characteristic time scale analysis shows that the zonal flow shearing time and eddy turnover time are very close to the effective decorrelation time, which suggests that the trapped electrons move with the fluid eddies. The fluidlike behaviors of the trapped electrons and the persistence of the mesoscale eddies contribute to the transition of the electron turbulent transport from gyro-Bohm scaling to Bohm scaling when the device size decreases.

Abstract:The power spectrum and the probability distribution function (PDF) of the turbulence-induced particle flux Gamma in the velocity shear layer of the HT-GM edge region have been measured and analysed. Three regions of frequency dependence (f(0), f(-1), f(-4)) have been observed in the spectrum of the Awe. The PDF of the flux displays a Gamma (-1) scaling over one decade in Gamma. Using the rescaled-range statistical technique, we find that the degree of the self-similarity (Hurst exponent) of the particle flux in the measured region ranges from 0.64 to 0.83. All of these results may mean that the plasma transport is in a state characterized by self-organized criticality.

Abstract:An experimental study of medium and high-k density fluctuations has been performed during lower hybrid current drive on HT-7 tokamak. When the lower hybrid power exceeded about 500 kW, the Ohmic normalized fluctuation level of channel kθ=12 cm−1 dropped to a low level, and the Ohmic normalized fluctuation level of channel kθ=24 cm−1 was still increasing while the frequency spectrum of density fluctuation will grow a peak at about 200 kHz in channel kθ=24 cm−1.

Abstract:Electrostatic turbulence is the main constrain of confinement improvement on low "β" toroidal magnetic confinement devices. With the development of high "β" operation scenario, electromagnetic turbulence is expected to become important for development of resistive tearing mode and resistive wall mode. The characteristics of electromagnetic turbulence on KTX are studied in low current tokamak and in reversed field pinch plasma operations. Electron density fluctuations in the core and edge area are measured based on forward scattering signal collection with interferometer system. The edge electric and magnetic field fluctuations are measured using movable multi-functional probe arrays. The spectral characteristics of the electromagnetic turbulence are present in our research.

Abstract:Edge plasma parameters, including electron temperature T-e, density n(e), plasma potential phi(p), radial electric field E-r and the corresponding fluctuations in the Sino-United Spherical Tokamak, have been systematically measured with Langmuir probe arrays. Wavenumber spectrum analyses show that edge fluctuations have a radial propagation character of the drift wave turbulence, with a characteristic radial phase velocity v(phr), similar to 0.7 km(.)s(-1) in the scrape-off layer and v(phr) similar to 0.9-1.4 km(.)s(-1) in the plasma edge.

Abstract:A three channel CO2 laser forward scattering diagnostic system was set up to study the core plasma density fluctuation in the HT-7 tokamak. The range of the wavenumber measurement in the poloidal direction was kθ = 12 cm−1 to 34 cm−1 and the wavenumber resolution was Δk = 2.5 cm−1. The wavenumber spectrum, the coexisting modes and the micro-instability eruption in experiments are presented.

Abstract:In saturated Ohmic confinement regime of the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak, significant changes in the relative electron temperature fluctuations T̃e/T¯e, measured by a correlation electron cyclotron emission system, have been observed. It was found that T̃e/T¯e is strongly dependent on the normalized electron temperature and density gradient, R/LTe=R∇Te/Te and R/Lne=R∇ne/ne. T̃e/T¯e stay at a high level when R/LTe is within the range of 17−25 and R/Lne is within the range of 4−6. It has been also observed that the energy confinement degradation is correlated with the increase in electron temperature fluctuations. The linear stability analysis results show that the electron temperature fluctuations are mainly attributed to the ion temperature gradient modes.

Abstract:First dedicated experiments have been carried out on the J-TEXT tokamak for investigating the electron thermal transport and plasma fluctuations before and during electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). The electron thermal diffusivities are calculated using the diffusive space-time evolution characteristic of the electron temperature perturbations produced by internal sawtooth collapse. It is found that the electron thermal diffusivity significantly increases as ECRH is turned on. The temperature fluctuations in the ECRH-assisted ohmic plasmas measured by the correlation electron cyclotron emission (CECE) diagnostic have a larger amplitude and broader bandwidth than that of pure ohmic plasmas. However, there is a slight change in the density fluctuations. The electron thermal diffusivities and the bandwidth of the electron temperature fluctuations decrease simultaneously as density increases in ohmic plasmas. However, the same trend is not found for ECRH-assisted ohmic plasmas with fixed ECRH power. The electron thermal diffusivities increase almost linearly with the ECRH power for the same discharge parameters, while the temperature fluctuations become broader at the same time. Linear stability analysis using the gyrokinetic electromagnetic numerical experiment code indicates that there is a turbulence transition from the mixed mode of ion temperature gradient mode and trapped electron mode (TEM) to the pure (broader) TEM when changing from pure ohmic to ECRH-assisted ohmic plasmas. It is consistent with the temperature fluctuations measured by CECE, which is sensitive to the long-wavelength modes. All these results suggest that the long-wavelength temperature fluctuations play an important role in electron thermal transport. In ECRH-assisted ohmic plasmas, electron thermal transport may become dominated by ETGs when TEMs are suppressed at high density.

Abstract:We report experiments designed to help us understand the interaction between electron-scale turbulence and plasma poloidal flow in tokamaks. Multiple electron-scale turbulence (for 0.8 <= k theta rho s <= 4/ne <(0.5) >) can be obtained. We note that the intensity of turbulence and the core density peaking factor show a negative correlation, while the poloidal rotation speed is inversely proportional to the intensity of electron-scale turbulence. The correlation between turbulence and plasma flow is found to be closely related to the density peaking factor. The quasi-linear theory of electron-scale turbulence-driven intrinsic poloidal rotation is adopted, and it shows that plasma flow may exhaust the free energy of turbulence through Reynolds stress. Besides, by comparing the plasma flow shear and spatial cross-correlation of turbulence we observed that the spatial structure of turbulence at k theta=12cm-1k theta=22cm-1

Abstract:Multi-channel soft x-ray (SX) detectors are applied to generate images of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillation on the HT-7 tokamak and the data from SX cameras are analysed by using the Fourier–Bessel harmonic reconstruction method and the singular value decomposition. The image reconstruction of SX emissivity is obtained on the assumption of plasma rigid rotation. One of the important phenomena in the HT-7 discharge is the transition from the sawtooth oscillations to the MHD oscillations when the plasma density grows higher. The MHD structure observed in the SX tomography is featured as follows: the magnetic surface of MHD structure is made up of the crescent-shaped ``hot core'' and the circular ``cold bubble''. The structure of the magnetic surface is relatively stable. It rotates in the direction of the electron diamagnetic drift at a frequency being the oscillation frequency of the MHD oscillations.

Abstract:Sawteeth are one of the concerning instabilities in ITER and future burning plasma experiments. Sawtooth dynamics and its interaction with broadband plasma turbulence has been a challenge for predictive simulations of core transport in future fusion devices. This study provides new observations of core turbulence behavior during sawtooth oscillations in DIII-D hydrogen L-mode neutral beam injection heated plasmas in an inner wall limited configuration. A strong correlation of electron temperature and density turbulence levels with the sawtooth oscillation phase has been observed at locations inside the Te inversion radius and/or safety factor q=1 magnetic surface. The Te turbulence amplitude in the core during the sawtooth ramp exhibits a critical Te gradient behavior inside but not near the Te inversion radius/q=1 magnetic surface. The most unstable mode calculated from the trapped gyro-landau fluid (TGLF) turbulence simulations reveal a change from low-k ion-type to low-k electron-type modes from pre- to post- sawtooth crash time periods.

On the edge turbulence in a DTT-like tokamak plasma

Abstract:Turbulent transport provides the main contribution to particle and energy losses in tokamak plasmas, which control is of paramount importance for forthcoming reactors such as the Divertor-Tokamak-Test (DTT) facility under construction at ENEA Frascati. In this work we investigate the characteristic features of drift turbulence at the plasma edge through 3D electro-static fluid simulations. We outline the crucial role of the diffusion coefficient for the emerging turbulent spectra and for the excitation of vortex structures or zonal flows. Moreover, the impact of adding a poloidal magnetic component is discussed considering also a radial shear, and the emergence of anisotropic spectral features is emphasized. The analysis is extended to the case with Dirichlet boundary conditions along the radial direction, instead of the periodic ones usually employed in such kind of analyses.
