Abstract:In this talk, we will present recent progresses in perturbative calculations of scattering amplitudes at tree and one‐loop levels. At tree level, we will discuss MHV‐diagram method and on‐shell recursion relation. At one‐loop level, we will establish the framework of Unitarity cut method.

Abstract:bstract We show how one-loop corrections to scattering amplitudes of scalars and gauge bosons can be obtained from tree amplitudes in one higher dimension. Starting with a complete tree-level scattering amplitude of n + 2 particles in five dimensions, one assumes that two of them cannot be “detected” and therefore an integration over their LIPS is carried out. The resulting object, function of the remaining n particles, is taken to be four-dimensional by restricting the corresponding momenta. We perform this procedure in the context of the tree-level CHY formulation of amplitudes. The scattering equations obtained in the procedure coincide with those derived by Geyer et al. from ambitwistor constructions and recently studied by two of the authors for bi-adjoint scalars. They have two sectors of solutions: regular and singular. We prove that the contribution from regular solutions generically gives rise to unphysical poles. However, using a BCFW argument we prove that the unphysical contributions are always homogeneous functions of the loop momentum and can be discarded. We also show that the contribution from singular solutions turns out to be homogeneous as well.
One-loop Scattering Equations and Amplitudes from Forward Limit

Abstract:We show that the forward limit of tree-level scattering equations with two massive particles yields the SL(2,C)-covariant form of the one-loop scattering equations recently proposed by Geyer et al. We clarify several properties about these equations and the formulas at one loop. We then argue that in the bi-adjoint scalar theory, such forward limit yields the correct one-loop massless amplitudes, which leads to a new formula for the latter.

Abstract:We give a proof that the pure spinor superstring theory in a novel infinite tension limit, as was discussed recently by Berkovits, reproduces the tree-level scattering amplitudes of the ten-dimensional $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 super Yang-Mills in its heterotic version and type II supergravity in its type II version. The Yang-Mills case agrees with the result obtained by Mafra, Schlotterer, Stieberger and Tsimpis.

Abstract:In recent years, theoretical calculations of scattering amplitudes face a huge challenge because experiment data coming from colliders, such as Large Hadron Collider (LHC), become more and more accurate. The traditional Feynman diagram technique can not deal with the problem because the difficulties involving gauge interaction. To solve the problem, theorists have made many studies. Through investigations of last fourteen years, we have achieved many important progresses, such as on-shell recursion relation, the Cachazo-He-Yuan framework for scattering amplitudes of massless particles, the geometric Grassmannian and Amplituhedron frameworks for N =4 SYM planar amplitudes, etc. These new methods can calculate tree-level and loop scattering amplitudes much faster than the traditional method, so have improved our ability to analyze background contributions from Standard Model and find possible signals of new physics by comparing with experiment data. These breakthroughs have some common features. These features, such as the focus of on-shell properties, the right choice of prescription variables and the emphasize of the analytic properties of scattering amplitudes, hint a possible new formalism of quantum field theory, which is very different from traditional Lagrangian formalism. In this article, we give a brief discussion of this topic.

Abstract:bstract We present the building blocks that can be combined to produce tree-level S-matrix elements of a variety of theories with various spins mixed in arbitrary dimensions. The new formulas for the scattering of n massless particles are given by integrals over the positions of n points on a sphere restricted to satisfy the scattering equations. As applications, we obtain all single-trace amplitudes in Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory, and generalizations to include scalars. Also in EYM but extended by a B-field and a dilaton, we present all double-trace gluon amplitudes. The building blocks are made of Pfaffians and Parke-Taylor-like factors of subsets of particle labels.
Theoretical predictions to differential cross sections and decay rates from the loop-tree duality

Abstract:Understanding the cancellation of ultraviolet and infrared singularities in perturbative quantum field theory is of central importance for the development and automation of various theoretical tools that make accurate predictions for observables at high-energy colliders. The loop-tree duality aims to find an efficient solution by treating loop and tree-level contributions under the same foot to achieve a local cancellation of singularities at the integrand level, and thus avoiding dimensional regularisation. In this talk, we exploit the causal properties of vacuum amplitudes in the loop-tree duality representation to present different applications to physical processes at higher orders.

Abstract:KLT relations on $S_2$ factorize closed string amplitudes into product of open string tree amplitudes. The field theory limits of KLT factorization relations hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. In this paper, we consider the field theory limits of relations on $D_2$. Though the relations on $D_2$ and KLT factorization relations hold on worldsheets with different topologies, we find the field theory limits of $D_2$ relations also hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. We use the $D_2$ relations to give three- and four-point tree amplitudes where gluons are minimally coupled to gravitons. We also give a discussion on general tree amplitudes for minimal coupling of gauge field and gravity. In general, any tree amplitude with $M$ gravitons in addition to $N$ gluons can be given by pure-gluon tree amplitudes with $N+2M$ legs.

Abstract:In unitarity cut method, compact input of on-shell tree level amplitudes is crucial to simplify calculations. Although BCFW on-shell recursion relation gives very compact tree level amplitudes, they usually contain spurious poles. In this paper, we present a method to deal with this issue and provide explicit simple algebraic functions for various coefficients in the presence of spurious poles. As an application, we present analytic result (not just rational term) for one-loop five gluon A(−++++) with scalar propagator for the first time.

Abstract:In these notes we review, for a mathematical audience, the computation of (tree-level) scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory in detail. In particular we demonstrate explicitly how the same formulas for six-particle NMHV helicity amplitudes are obtained from summing Feynman diagrams and from computing the canonical form of the $n=6, k=1, m=4$ amplituhedron.

MHV amplitudes and BCFW recursion for Yang-Mills theory in the de Sitter static patch

Abstract:We study the scattering problem in the static patch of de Sitter space, i.e. the problem of field evolution between the past and future horizons of a de Sitter observer. We formulate the problem in terms of off-shell fields in Poincare coordinates. This is especially convenient for conformal theories, where the static patch can be viewed as a flat causal diamond, with one tip at the origin and the other at timelike infinity. As an important example, we consider Yang-Mills theory at tree level. We find that static-patch scattering for Yang-Mills is subject to BCFW-like recursion relations. These can reduce any static-patch amplitude to one with N^{-1}MHV helicity structure, dressed by ordinary Minkowski amplitudes. We derive all the N^{-1}MHV static-patch amplitudes from self-dual Yang-Mills field solutions. Using the recursion relations, we then derive from these an infinite set of MHV amplitudes, with arbitrary number of external legs.

Integrated Unitarity for Scattering Amplitudes

Abstract:We present a new method for computing multi-loop scattering amplitudes in Quantum Field Theory. It extends the Generalized Unitarity method by constraining not only the integrand of the amplitude but also its full integrated form. Our approach exploits the relation between cuts and discontinuities of the amplitude. Explicitly, by the virtue of analyticity and unitarity of the S-matrix, the amplitude can be expressed in terms of lower-loop on-shell amplitudes dispersively integrated along cuts. As both cuts and discontinuities can be computed systematically in dimensional regularization, we validated our method by reproducing the four-gluon amplitude in two-loop massless Quantum Chromodynamics. Moreover, since our approach improves the performance of the calculation, we provide a new result for the four-loop four-point massless planar ladder Feynman integral. It is expressed in terms of Harmonic Polylogarithms with letters 0 and 1.

Abstract:It is well known that under the color-decomposition, one-loop amplitude of gluons contains partial amplitudes of single and double trace structures, and particularly all partial amplitudes of double trace structure can be expressed as a linear combination of partial amplitudes of single trace structure. Using unitarity cut method, we prove that this result is the natural consequence of tree-level Kleiss–Kuijf relation. Generalizing the unitarity cut method to two-loop (triple cut in this case), we show that, unlike the one-loop case, partial amplitudes of double and triple trace structures cannot be expressed as a linear combination of partial amplitudes of leading-color single trace structure. For partial amplitudes of subleading-color single trace structure, we have shown a very non-trivial Kleiss–Kuijf relation for six and seven-point amplitudes, which is one new result of our paper and cannot be obtained by U(1)-decoupling method. Mysteriously, when we consider the case of eight points, Kleiss–Kuijf relation must be modified for subleading-color single trace partial amplitudes.

Abstract:The Loop-Tree Duality (LTD) is a novel perturbative method in QFT that establishes a relation between loop-level and tree-level scattering amplitudes. This is achieved by directly applying the Residue Theorem to the loop-energy-integration. The result is a sum over all possible single cuts of the Feynman diagram in consideration integrated over a modified phase space. These single-cut integrals, called Dual contributions, are in fact tree-level objects and thus give rise to the opportunity of bringing loop- and tree-contributions together, treating them simultaneously in a common Monte Carlo event generator. Initially introduced for one-loop scalar integrals, the applicability of the LTD has been expanded ever since. In this thesis, we show how to deal with Feynman graphs beyond simple poles by taking advantage of Integration By Parts (IBP) relations. Furthermore, we investigate the cancellation of singularities among Dual contributions as well as between real and virtual corrections. For the first time, a numerical implementation of the LTD was done in the form of a computer program that calculates one-loop scattering diagrams. We present details on the contour deformation employed alongside the results for scalar integrals up to the pentagon- and tensor integrals up to the hexagon-level.

Understanding zeros and splittings of ordered tree amplitudes via Feynman diagrams

Abstract:In this paper, we propose new understandings for recently discovered hidden zeros and novel splittings, by utilizing Feynman diagrams. The study focus on ordered tree level amplitudes of three theories, which are ${\rm Tr}(\phi^3)$, Yang-Mills, and non-linear sigma model. We find three universal ways of cutting Feynman diagrams, which are valid for any diagram, allowing us to separate a full amplitude into two/three pieces. As will be shown, the first type of cuttings leads to hidden zeros, the second one gives rise to $2$-splits, while the third one corresponds to $3$-splits called smooth splittings. Throughout this work, we frequently use the helpful auxiliary technic of thinking the resulting pieces as in orthogonal spaces. However, final results are independent of this auxiliary picture.

Study of Asymptotic Free Scalar Field Theories from Adaptive Perturbation Method

Abstract:We focus on the behavior of (2+1)d $\lambda\phi^4$ and (5+1)d $\lambda\phi^3$ or $\lambda|\phi|^3$ theories in different regimes and compare the results obtained from the adaptive perturbation method with those obtained from lattice simulation. These theories are simple models that exhibit asymptotic freedom, which is a property that is also observed in more complex theories such as QCD, which describes the strong interaction between quarks and gluons. Asymptotic freedom is an important feature of these theories because it allows for a perturbative treatment of interactions at high energies. However, the standard perturbation scheme breaks down in the presence of strong interactions, and the adaptive perturbation method, which involves resuming the Feynman diagrams, is more suitable for studying these interactions. Our research involves comparing the perturbation result to lattice simulation. In the case of the $\phi^3$ theory, there is no stable vacuum, so we explore evidence from the $|\phi|^3$ theory instead. Our results appear to show that resummation improves the strong coupling result for both the $\lambda\phi^4$ and $\lambda|\phi|^3$ theories. Additionally, we improve the resummation method for the three-point coupling vertex and study the RG flow to analyze the resummation contribution and theoretical properties.

Tree-level Scattering Amplitudes via Homotopy Transfer

Abstract:We formalize the computation of tree-level scattering amplitudes in terms of the homotopy transfer of homotopy algebras, illustrating it with scalar $\phi^3$ and Yang-Mills theory. The data of a (gauge) field theory with an action is encoded in a cyclic homotopy Lie or $L_{\infty}$ algebra defined on a chain complex including a space of fields. This $L_{\infty}$ structure can be transported, by means of homotopy transfer, to a smaller space that, in the massless case, consists of harmonic fields. The required homotopy maps are well-defined since we work with the space of finite sums of plane-wave solutions. The resulting $L_{\infty}$ brackets encode the tree-level scattering amplitudes and satisfy generalized Jacobi identities that imply the Ward identities. We further present a method to compute color-ordered scattering amplitudes for Yang-Mills theory, using that its $L_{\infty}$ algebra is the tensor product of the color Lie algebra with a homotopy commutative associative or $C_{\infty}$ algebra. The color-ordered scattering amplitudes are then obtained by homotopy transfer of $C_{\infty}$ algebras.

Field theory expansions of string theory amplitudes

Abstract:Motivated by quantum field theory (QFT) considerations, we present new representations of the Euler-Beta function and tree-level string theory amplitudes using a new two-channel, local, crossing symmetric dispersion relation. Unlike standard series representations, the new ones are analytic everywhere except at the poles, sum over poles in all channels and include contact interactions, in the spirit of QFT. This enables us to consider mass-level truncation, which preserves all the features of the original amplitudes. By starting with such expansions for generalized Euler-Beta functions and demanding QFT like features, we single out the open superstring amplitude. We demonstrate the difficulty in deforming away from the string amplitude and show that a class of such deformations can be potentially interesting when there is level truncation. Our considerations also lead to new QFT-inspired, parametric representations of the Zeta function and $\pi$, which show fast convergence.

Abstract:The interplay of unitarity and analyticity has long been known to impose strong constraints on scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory. This has been highlighted in recent times in a number of papers and lecture notes. Here we examine such conditions in the context of superstring tree-level scattering amplitudes, leading to positivity constraints on determinants of Hankel matrices involving polynomials of multiple zeta values. These generalise certain constraints on polynomials of single zeta values in the mathematics literature.
