Abstract:Objective: To investigate the influence of mild hypothermia on infarct volume and angiogenesis in rats with focal cerebral ischemia. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent unilateral middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) and were randomly divided into two groups as control group(n =12)and mild hypothermia group(n =12).The neurological score were evaluated at 2 h,7 d and 14 d after MCAO.Infarct volume and microvessel density in ischemic boundary regions were measured at 14 d after MCAO.Results: There was no difference in neurological scores between the two groups at 2 h after MCAO,but there were significant difference between the two groups at 7 d and 14 d after MCAO.The infarct volume of mild hypothermia group [(81.9±17.7)mm3] was significantly smaller than that of control group [(110.60±22.5)mm3].The microvessel density in mild hypothermia group [(373.10±68.81)/mm2] were significantly higher than in control group [(208.90±61.38) /mm2].Conclusion: Mild hypothermia could promote angiogenesis in ischemic boundary regions and exerts cerebral protection.
