Abstract:The authors demonstrate a composite microring laser formed by immersing a silica microfiber knot in a rhodamine 6G dye solution. When the dye molecules are evanescently pumped by 532nm wavelength laser pulses guided along a 350μm diameter knot, lasing oscillation occurs inside the evanescently coupled closed-ring microcavity with a linewidth of about 0.06nm. Laser emission around 570 and 580nm wavelengths, which is evanescently coupled back into the microfiber, is observed with a threshold of about 9.2μJ∕pulse. The use of the microfiber knot cavity suggests a convenient and efficient approach to both pumping and collection of the evanescent-wave-coupled dye laser.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate a 1.5μm wavelength microfiber laser formed by tightening a doped microfiber into a knot in air. The 2-mm-diameter knot, assembled using a 3.8-μm-diameter microfiber that is directly drawn from Er:Yb-doped phosphate glass, serves as both active medium and resonating cavity for lasing. Single-longitudinal-mode laser with threshold of about 5mW and output power higher than 8μW is obtained. Their initial results suggest a simple approach to highly compact lasers based on doped microscale optical fibers.
Experimental Demonstration of Stimulated Raman Scattering in the Evanescent Field of a Tapered Nanofiber Immersed in a Liquid

Abstract:Summary form only given. Tapered nanofibers are fibers that are stretched until their diameter becomes comparable to the optical wavelength. As the length of such nanofibers can reach tens of centimeters, the guided mode that presents a strong evanescent field can be used to efficiently excite “evanescent nonlinearities” in the medium surrounding the nanofiber. This evanescent field was already used in many applications, for instance to probe the atomic fluorescence of gases, and also for spectroscopic measurements. However, to our knowledge, this field has never been used to perform optical nonlinearities, the so-called “evanescent nonlinearities”, except in two very recent communications . In this work, we present the demonstration of stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field of a nanofiber immersed in ethanol. The nanofiber was drawn from a telecom fiber with a home-made pulling platform. The targeted diameter and length are respectively 440 nm and 6 cm. The pump source was a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser emitting pulses at 532 nm whose full width at half maximum is 510 ps. We observed the first Stokes of ethanol at 630 nm (see fig. below). The conversion efficiency is about 40 % for an input pump energy of 0.24 μJ. This first experimental demonstration of stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field of a nanofiber immersed in a liquid opens the way to the study of a new kind of experiments and components, thanks to the various materials that can form or surround the nanofiber and the feasibility of nanosystems such as nanoloops or nanoresonators.

Abstract:We propose a compact laser configuration based on resonating both the pump and signal light along a microfiber ring doped with active ions. We estimate the minimum Q-factor to obtain lasing and find that values already demonstrated in passive microfiber rings will be sufficient. We model the performance of this device in steady state using rate equations and show that pump resonance can significantly reduce the threshold and increase the quantum efficiency, especially for rings made of materials with weak active ion absorption. Numerical examples for erbium and ytterbium doped devices are presented. Taking into account scattering and coupling losses the optimum pump coupling factor is calculated. The dependences of the quantum efficiency and threshold power on the coupling losses are also investigated. We predict that efficient ytterbium-doped lasers can be obtained with a ring diameter down to a few tens of micrometers.
Microfiber Resonators in the Linear and the Nonlinear Regimes

Abstract:The microfiber resonators presented here were made by forming an open knot with silica microfibers in air. Resonance spectra were observed in the near infrared and more recently in the visible. The knot structure was mechanically stable and was maintained upon immersion in a liquid. Upon immersion the change of refractive index of the medium surrounding the knot shifted the spectral region where resonances were observed. Moreover, using a liquid which could be polymerized, we have imbedded microfiber knot resonators in a solid matrix to form rugged devices. In the presence of nonlinearity a resonator can exhibit bistability. This behaviour was studied both numerically and experimentally. In particular hysteresis cycles were measured in a silica microfiber knot and fitted to a model including the thermal response of the knot. The origin of the bistability observed so far is refractive, but it is also possible to obtain bistability using a saturable absorber. To this avail, we are now investigating the possibility of using carbon nanotubes as saturable absorbers interacting with the evanescent field of microfibers. Design issues and envisioned applications of microfiber bistable devices will be discussed.

Abstract:A microcavity laser based on evanescent-wave-coupled gain is formed using a silica fiber with a diameter of 125 μm in a rhodamine 6G ethanol solution. When the fiber is sticking to the cuvette wall by capillary force, using the excitation of a 532 nm nanosecond pulsed laser, single-mode laser emission is observed. While increasing the distance between the fiber and the cuvette wall, the typical multi-peak whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) laser emission can also be demonstrated. On the other hand, while increasing the refractive index of the solution by mixing ethanol and ethylene glycol with different ratios as a solvent, the single-mode emission would evolve to multi-peak WGM laser emission controllably.

Abstract:We demonstrate optical resonance from microfiber knots obtained by manipulating freestanding silica microfibers. Q factors as high as 57 000 with finesse of 22 are observed in knots with sizes less than 1 mm. The free spectral range of the resonator can be easily tuned by tightening the knot structure in air. The knot resonators are highly stable in water with Q factors up to 31 000 and finesse of 13. The possibility of supporting the knot resonator with a solid MgF2 substrate is also demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper reports an original microfluidic dye laser based on microdroplets flowing through an on-chip Fabry-Perot cavity. This combination allows fast laser emission at distinct wavelength over a wide bandwidth. The switching time from one wavelength to another, monitored by the droplet production system, can be reduced to the millisecond range. Alternation of rhodamine 6G and sulforhodamine 640 dye droplets have been performed to generate laser emissions at 567 and 625 nm.

Abstract:We fabricated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers doped with Rhodamine 6G laser dyes via an electrospinning technique, which were then excited by a pulsed laser for laser emission. The laser was observed at a low threshold of several mu J and the intensity increased with the dye concentration. A single peak with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 4 nm was detected for a fiber of 300 nm diameter and multi-peaks with an FWHM of 2 nm were recorded as the diameter was increased to 800 nm. However, the multi-peaks tended to saturate to one laser peak with an intensive incident laser. The lasing mode was closely related to the diameters of the PVA fibers. Simulating results indicated that the single and multiple modes were closely related to the pump wavelength. The nanofiber as a network forming a random laser is expected to be used as a waveguide in communications and the multi-modes have potential application in cryptology.

Abstract:A compact single-frequency microfiber laser was demonstrated in a single-knot Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass fiber ring with a diameter of 397.5 mu m. The lasing wavelength is 1534.25nm and the side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is higher than 27 dB. The linewidth is measured to be about 5 kHz and the relative intensity noise (RIN) is around -110 dB/Hz at frequencies over 50 kHz. (C) 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:A novel multi-wavelength mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser with tungsten disulfide (WS2) combined with a microfiber knot is described. This hybrid fiber structure facilitates strong light matter interaction between the saturated absorption of the WS2 material and high optical non-linearity of the microfiber knot. It is demonstrated experimentally that the novel fiber laser works stably in the absence of an external comb filter, with the generation of stable multi-wavelength picosecond pulses. In the multi-wavelength lasing regime, up to seven-wavelength stable mode-locked pulses are obtained using a polarization controller with the pump power at 250 mW. The pulse period and the pulsewidth are 188.7 ns and 16.3 ps, respectively. In addition, the number of multi-wavelength lasing channels can be changed by simply adjusting the microfiber knot size. Experimental results show the laser to have a stable output over 12-h recording period. The results of this investigation demonstrate that the optical microfiber knot with a WS2 overlay based fiber laser device can operate as a highly nonlinear optical component and a saturable absorber. The proposed multi-wavelength lasing device can therefore be widely used for non-linear and ultrafast photonics and has a number of advantages compared to similar devices using more conventional technologies, including low cost and good stability.

Abstract:A digital microfluidic dye laser that integrates a Fabry–Perot cavity with two fiber-based mirrors is shown to exhibit a single mode emission. In addition, fast switching is achieved via the alternation of droplet streams that contain two different dyes. Single-longitudinal-mode emission is observed for each dye wavelength (at 565 and 586 nm) with a linewidth narrower than 0.12 nm. This system appears thus well suited for on-chip spectroscopy and flow cytometry.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable narrow linewidth microfiber laser is demonstrated. The oscillating emission of the microfiber laser is provided by a double-knot with a cavity length around 1.75 mm, which is fabricated by using a homemade Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass fiber. The diameters of the two knots are 206 and 351 mu m respectively, while the diameter of the microfiber is about 1.88 mu m. Based on this compact structure, a 2 kHz linewidth single frequency laser is realized with a wavelength tuning range larger than 18 nm. The side-mode-suppression ratio is higher than 38 dB, and the relative intensity noise (RIN) is measured to be -110 dB Hz(-1) at frequencies of over 50 kHz.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an application of microfiber knot resonator (MKR) in the generation of a stable and uniform single-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). An MKR was fabricated using a microfiber a few micrometers in diameter. By embedding the MKR to the ring cavity of the EDFL, a laser with a wavelength of 1558.818 nm and a 3-dB linewidth of 0.0149 nm is demonstrated. The side mode suppression ratio of the laser is about 30 dB, and the maximum power fluctuation is about 0.85 dB. The results demonstrate that the MKR can be employed as a high-performance comb filter to realize a stable and uniform fiber laser. (C) 2016 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Abstract:We demonstrate the first microfluidic evanescent dye laser which is based on a solid distributed feedback (DFB) cavity and exhibits a pure single mode lasing emission. The laser is composed of a solid second order circular grating DFB cavity and a PDMS chamber filled with dye solution. The thin layer of dye solution served as the liquid cladding covering the whole surface of solid DFB cavity. The evanescent gain is contributed by the interaction between the evanescent tail of the guided wave with the dye solution under optical pumping. As most of the guided mode is located inside the solid waveguide, the guided mode and lasing wavelength selection are primarily determined by the property of the solid DFB cavity.

Abstract:Here we demonstrated laser emission from a dye doped polymer nanofiber knot ring resonator. Dye doped polymer nanofiber was fabricated by flame assisted general fiber drawing technique. After bending the fiber to a knot ring resonator, lasing action with 0.07-nm linewidth was observed. From the relation between mode spacing and diameter of ring cavity, the lasing action was considered to be formed by whispering gallery modes.

Abstract:A tunable optofluidic microring dye laser within a tapered hollow core microstructured optical fiber was demonstrated. The fiber core was filled with a microfluidic gain medium plug and axially pumped by a nanosecond pulse laser at 532 nm. Strong radial emission and low-threshold lasing (16 nJ/pulse) were achieved. Lasing was achieved around the surface of the microfluidic plug. Laser emission was tuned by changing the liquid surface location along the tapered fiber. The possibility of developing a tunable laser within the tapered simplified hollow core microstructured optical fiber presents opportunities for developing liquid surface position sensors and biomedical analysis.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optofluidic evanescent laser based on a solid circular distributed feedback grating with the dye solution acting as the cladding layer. The laser mode is confined within the grating and experiences optical gain via the interaction between its evanescent component with the dye solution. Above a pump energy of 9.5 μJ/pulse, the laser exhibited single mode operation at 571 nm. Stable, narrow-linewidth emission was observed for a wide range of fluid refractive indices, even for those lower than of polydimethylsiloxane. We attribute this property to the evanescent coupling of the laser mode with the fluidic gain.

Abstract:We present the results of a study on laser emission from luminescent polymer microresonators containing a near-infrared emitting dye, 2-(6-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-2,4-neopentylene-1,3,5-hexatrienyl)-3-methyl-benzothiazolium perchlorat. Poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) microrings doped with the dye are fabricated around a 200-mu m-diameter silica optical fiber by self-assembly and are shown to lase at around 835 nm under nanosecond photopumping at 532 nm. The threshold for lasing is found to be 311 +/- 87 mu J/cm(2) (62.2 +/- 17.3 kW/cm(2)). The lower limit of the cavity quality factor is estimated to be 1.8x10(3). Abstract:A simple and compact Erbium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated with two Sagnac loops formed by a 3×3 microfiber coupler. By fusing two ports on each side of the 3 ×3 microfiber coupler and embedding a 90 cm Erbium-doped fiber in one loop, a stable laser output is achieved at 1530 nm region with an optical signal to noise ratio of ~40 dB using a 980-nm pump. Taking advantage of the large evanescent field and excellent temperature and mechanical properties of the micro-sized coupled area, the device has great potentials in tunable laser and active sensing for refractive index, temperature, strain and pressure.
