Abstract:The dispersion degree of polarization, a new definition of the depolarization degree of partially polarized beams, is first proposed, to the best of our knowledge, to measure the performance of fiber depolarizers. First, the description of the polarization based on the Poincaré sphere is introduced. Then, the modified Delaunay triangulation algorithm is introduced, and the calculation formula of the dispersion degree of polarization is given based on this algorithm. The experimental device was set up, and the dispersion degree of polarization of the depolarized light after the fiber depolarizer was measured to be 47.3%. The components and proportions of polarization in the depolarized light were also obtained. Compared with the degree of polarization, the dispersion degree of polarization can quantitatively analyze the light polarization evaluation in the time dimension and provide a numerical reference for improving the depolarizer, thus increasing the fiber sensor's accuracy.

Abstract:Polarization controlling is crucial to increase the accuracy of the fiber-optic gyroscopes. In this paper, a new method and testing device measuring the polarization characteristics of the optical components such as SLD light source, polarize maintain fiber, coupler and polarizer was introduced. This system has good qualities of low cost, easy to operate, high accuracy. Extinction ratio of fiber components can be tested up to 55dB. Tested with that device, Panda PM fiber's extinction ratio is 25dB.

Abstract:A simple method based on carrier suppression modulation for measuring first-order polarization-mode dispersion of hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) is proposed and investigated. By adjusting the incident optical wavelength and measuring the power penalty of optically generated microwave signals, the wavelength-dependent differential group delay (DGD) in HC-PBGF can be obtained. Moreover, this proposed method is chromatic-dispersion-insensitive. The experimental results indicate that a segment of 20-m HC-PBGF exhibits highly birefringent DGD of 25, 59, and 84 ps with measurement error less than 2 ps for the incident optical wavelength of 1560, 1575, and 1580 nm, respectively

Abstract:We built a dispersive white-light spectral interferometer for precisely measuring the dispersion properties of a multilayer thin-film structure. A novel algorithm with improved robustness to measurement errors is presented by combining a windowed Fourier transformation with wavelet-based differentiation. Compared with previously published algorithms, this method shows substantial resistance to measurement errors. The group delay dispersion properties of bulk materials and a homemade chirped mirror are measured by our apparatus, and the measurement result manifests considerable accuracy and robustness. The technique shows reasonable potential for the characterization of ultrabroadband chirped mirrors.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method to measure the distributed polarization mode coupling in polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers is introduced. The measurement system is based on white light interference. A super luminescent diode is used as the broadband light source in the system. The whole test system is working on 1300nm wavelength. There are two main parts of the measurement equipment: polarization adjustment and a scanned Michelson interferometer. In order to improve the accuracy, a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) is-applied in the scanned Michelson interferometer. The maximum length of tested polarization-maintaining fiber is one kilometer, and the spatial resolution of this method reached 60 mm along the tested PM fiber. The degree of polarization mode coupling that could be detected is -75dB.

Abstract:High nonlinear microstructure fibre (HNMF) is preferred in nonlinear fibre optics, especially in the applications of optical parametric effects, due to its high optical nonlinear coefficient. However, polarization dependent dispersion will impact the nonlinear optical parametric process in HNMFs. In this paper, modulation instability (MI) method is used to measure the polarization dependent dispersion of a piece of commercial HNMF, including the group velocity dispersion, the dispersion slope, the fourth-order dispersion and group birefringence. It also experimentally demonstrates the impact of the polarization dependent dispersion on the continuous wave supercontinuum (SC) generation. On one axis MI sidebands with symmetric frequency detunings are generated, while on the other axis with larger MI frequency detuning, SC is generated by soliton self-frequency shift.

Abstract:Two novel wide-angle and broadband 2D photonic crystal polarization splitters (PCPS) which are the multilayer wavy films (MWF) structure and arrow-head like structure are designed based on the autocloning method. Plane wave expansion (PWE) method is used to calculate the band structure and explain the reason for the wide-angle and broadband polarization splitting effect. In order to verify the result derived from PWE method, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to test and measure the polarization effect for the MWF structure.

This paper analyzes measurement methods of PMD in optical fiber with the polarization dependent loss (PDL) and the effects of the PDL and wavelength-scanning interval on the measurement results. Finally, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations with waveplate models on the statistics of first and second order PMD in single mode fiber with the PDL.

Abstract:The basic properties including physical properties and absorption spectrum were measured firstly. Then the chromatic dispersion of air-guiding photonic band-gap fibers (PBGF) was measured with phase-shift method and pulse delay method, from experimental results we can see that their test results are accordant. The differential group delay (DGD) of the PBGF was also measured with a method of Sagnac interferometer. We found that the DGD is in direct proportion to its chromatic dispersion.

Abstract:The theoretical,simulation,and experimental study on the spectrum Fourier analysis method(SFAM) to measure polarization mode dispersion(PMD)was pressented.With this method,the simulations for three PMD emulators were done,which were composed of one,two,three polarization maintain fiber(PMF) respectively.And the experimental measurements were done for a PMF,a 11 km-ling single mode fiber(SMF) and a commercial emulator.The difference of this method with previous one that counting the wavelength extrema is also studied.The result shows that the SFAM is more suitable to measure the PMD of strong coupling fiber,for the statistical characteristic of PMD has been considered.

Abstract:Microstructured optical fibers(MOFs)are one of the most exciting developments in fiber optics.A multipole method,numerical method,is introduced,which can be used for high-accuracy calculations of the full propagation constant of MOFs.This method is combined with statistics to show theoretically how the errors in fibers producing influence the MOFs loss and dispersion,and how the dispersion varies with the number of rings of holes.

Abstract:Using a full-vector model,we investigate the properties of a kind of high biref ringence index guiding photonic crystal fibers.We concentrate on the polarizatio n properties including linear polarization of fundamental modal field,modal bire fringence and polarization mode dispersion.Two-fold rotational symmetry was int roduced into the fiber structure by creating a regular array of air hole of t wo different sizes disposed about a pure silica core.The degeneracy of two ortho normal polarized-modes of the fundamental mode was removed.This creates a possi bility to attain a modal birefringence of at least one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional high birefringence fibers.A beat length of 0.4067mm i s obtained at the wavelength 1540nm.We can obtain much higher birefringence and larger difference of group time delay by choosing different structure parameter of fibers.The numerical results are in very good agreement with the results of e xperiment.

Abstract:A method is presented to analyse the effect of structure random disturbances on the confinement loss and the chromatic dispersion characterizations of microstructured optical fibres, which combines multipole methods with the random statistics process. Some useful results to the fabrication of microstructured optical fibres have been obtained.

Abstract:In this paper,a polarization-maintaining fiber interference structure based on polarization-maintaining fiber,Faraday rotation mirror (FRM),polarization beam splitter (PBS) and polarization-maintaining ring is proposed.The piezoelectric ceramic phase modulator is used in the structure to make the interference work in the optical path linear modulation region to reduce the error caused by the nonlinear optical path modulation of the piezoelectric ceramics.The combination of FRM,polarization-maintaining fiber and polarization-maintaining device ensures the polarization stability of the transmitted light,eliminates the influence of the polarization fading effect,and ensures stable spectral measurement results.The results of SLD (super luminescent diode) were measured and the results were consistent with those obtained by the spectrometer.The results show that the system can measure the stability of the spectrum.The system can be used to provide spectral analysis of commonly used light sources (such as diode lasers,LED and semiconductor lasers,etc.) for fiber optic sensors and communications applications.

Abstract:Based on the theoretical analysis,experiments prove that the change of polarization in an all-fiber position determination system will affect the modulation depth and the initial phase of the interference directly.A new improved all-fiber position determination system is designed.By using a Faraday rotation mirror,the system is insensitive to the change of the polarization in the sensing part of the optic fiber,and the practicability of the system is increased.

Abstract:Routine characterization of polarization mode dispersion of single-mode fibers in installed cables requires simple and fast techniques. All standardized techniques use both fiber ends, one connected to the optical source and the other one for signal detection. Clearly, this causes several drawbacks in field tests because the two fiber ends are usually far from each other. Among standardized techniques, the fixed-polarizer method (also called wavelength scanning method) is one of the simplest to implement. In this work we present a new single-end measurement scheme based on the fixed polarizer method applied to the signal backreflected by the fiber far-end. We report analytical equations and numerical solutions that permit to calculate the mean value of the differential group delay measuring the crossings and/or extreme densities of the spectrum transmitted through a linear polarizer. We also show that the mean value of the differential group delay can be calculated using the Fourier transform of the detected signal. Finally, experimental results on cascades of single-mode step-index fibers confirm the robustness and easiness of our proposal for polarization mode dispersion measurements.
