Abstract:Climate is one of most important ecological components in urban space environment ecosystem and plays a very dominant role in ecological urban design. An ecological urban design should be firstly a climate responsive urban design which could adapt to regional macroclimate environment and improve urban microclimate environment effectively. Regional macroclimate plays a very important role in designs and constructions of urban built environment. While some designs and constructions of urban built environments could also create different kinds of urban microclimate environments including some uncomfortable ones. In this context, livability of urban built environment could be improved through certain ecological urban design based on considerations of regional macroclimate and urban microclimate. Compared with studies of ecological architecture design response to climate, those of ecological urban design are not developed very widely and deeply in China. With northern winter cities in China as an example, ecological urban design countermeasures response to cold climate in different levels are studied which include countermeasures based on adaptation to regional macroclimate such as advocating compact city form, improving public transportation, creating abundant winter landscape, and supplying fitting climate-protected facilities etc., and countermeasures based on improvement of urban microclimate including getting more sunshine and improving wind environment.
