Abstract:The 1-dimension photonic crystal is descripted by using acoustic technique.MaxwellI equation is reduced to Schrodinger equation if assuming free damping,free current,free magnetism and homogeneity for material,but Schrodinger equation is further reduced to Mathieu equation if deflected index is cosine form.It shows that there are a series of stable zones and unstable zones(stop band)in the plane of parameter δ and e.When,these unstable zones will be reduced to some points in the centre of the stop-bands.The stop-bands widths are obtained by the perturbation techniques.The result shows that the widths of the first order and second order unstable zones depend on the parameters of dielectric and photonic frequency.Only suitable regulating these parameters,the band-structure can be regulated,thus the photonic crystal with a variable properties can be obtained.

Abstract:In order to improve monotonously variational group delay characteristic in the conventional one-dimensional photonic crystals(PCs),an improved PCs structure was presented.The properties of rapid phase shift for the mismatch induced by the overlaps of different reflective bands inside PCs were utilized in the structure,and the relationship between phase shift and group delay was used,and thickness-tapered period structures were added at the two ends of the periodical PCs.The property of the reflective band was investigated inside the structure,and distribution of corresponding group delay was studied.Group delay properties between two thickness-tapered structures including high refractive index material and low refractive index material were compared and analyzed.The results indicate that compared with traditional Bragg mirrors,the structure design is more free and the structure can achieve multichannel group delay,realize large and linear dispersion at multiwave of light beams,and have better filtering effect and more superiorities in optical demultiplexer system.

Abstract:AbstrcatThe calculation of band structure and analysis of light propagation in photonic crystals are basic and important issues. The plane wave expansion method to calculate band structure and the Floquet-Bloch theory to analyze light propagation in periodic dielectric materials are discussed emphatically. The electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals can be expressed as a series of spacial harmonics. The propagation direction of light in photonic crystals is consistent with wave energy or group velocity. The behavior of light can be analyzed qualitatively by using wave vector diagram.

Abstract:We proposed and fabricated a double-slots photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) structure formed by introducing two slots into PCWGs with air-bridge structure on silicon-on-insulator substrate. The mode characteristics of double-slots PCWGs were investigated theoretically and experimentally. The transmission spectra present a sharp and deep dip (22 dB with bandwidth of 6 nm) caused by ministop band in the proposed structure, which is 15 dB deeper than that in the W3 PCWG. Additionally, dependence of the dip on temperature in the double-slots PCWG was measured and a temperature coefficient 0.159 nm/°C can be concluded.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) slab photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer were designed and fabricated. Full photonic band gap, band gap guided mode, and index guided mode were observed by measuring the transmission spectra. Mini-stop-bands in the PCWG were simulated with different structure paramaters. Coupling characteristics of PCWG were investigated theoretically considering the imperfections during the fabrication process. It was found that suppressing power reservation effect can realize both short coupling length and high coupling efficiency.

Abstract:Based on plane wave expansion method, the influence of factors such as lattice structure, dielectric constant ratio and filling ratio on three-dimensional photonic crystals with fcc, diamond and woodpile structures is studied. Of these structures, the fcc structure, owing to its high symmetry, is only fit for close-packed lattice prepared by inverted-opal method. The diamond structure easily generates good complete band gaps with high band gap ratio, and also the complete forbidden band that is needed can be obtained by adjusting some parameters in the experiment. The woodpile structure can produce big band gaps in a wider parameter range than the other two structures, which offers convenience for preparing three-dimensional photonic crystals in the laboratory. For all three kinds of three-dimensional photonic crystal structures, their band gap width and band gap ratio can be improved with the increase of dielectric constant ratio. In this paper, some interesting phenomena not noticed in the former papers are also presented.

Abstract:Properties of photonic band gap and light propagation in one-dimensional multicomponent photonic crystal have been studied with the optical transfer matrix method. We mainly analyze the relation of photonic band-gap property with the arrangement of components, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness. In this study, the methods to change the width and the location of the existing photonic band-gaps in multicomponent photonic crystal are proposed.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are artificially created materials with periodic dielectric constant variations. The simplest one-dimensional photonic crystals are multilayer structures obtained by alternately growing thin-films with different dielectric constants by molecular beam epitaxy. When the dielectric constant of one-dimensional photonic crystal is a sine-squared function in coordinate space, the photonic motion equation is reduced to Mathieu equation.The band construction for this system is discussed based on Bloch theorem,and the system presented automatically band properties.It shows that there are a series of stable zones and unstable zones (forbidden-bands) in the plane of parameter δ and e. When e→0, these unstable zones will be reduced to some points in the centre of the forbidden-bands. The unstable zone and the forbidden-band width are found by the perturbation techniques.The result shows that the widths of the first order and second order unstable zones depend on the parameters of dielectric and photonic frequency. By adjusting these parameters, one can obtain the photonic crystals with different band structures and properties.

Abstract:The properties of the propagating field in multimode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) exhibiting no photonic band gaps (PBGs) are investigated. The transmission spectrum shows that the input field can be guided with high efficiency, and resemble index-guided modes owing to the combination of total internal reflection (TIR) and distributed Bragg reflection (DBR). Self-imaging effect happens and the filling fraction determines the beating lengths. The rows of air holes decide DBR coming from the mirrors on both sides of the guiding region, which governs the transmission spectrum. It provides a new way to realize the components for both polarizations by combining PBG and TIR effects in PCWs.

Abstract:Comparative studies between the transfer matrices method (TMM) and plane wave method (PWM) approaches have been performed on 1D photonics crystal under different conditions to show the differences between these two kinds of calculations. TMM is suitable for the design of photonic crystal device with high precision and is in good agreement with experimental results, but is not suitable for the 2D and 3D photonic structures which are limited by the complicated boundary conditions at micro interfaces. The result based on the PWM approach to deal approximately with the photonic structure in approximation has not yet. been strictly verified by experiment. not even for 1D photonic crystal structures. More efforts will be required to explore its validation under all physical conditions to enhance its application.

Abstract:Decoupling of multiple coupled photonic crystal waveguides (M-CPCWs) is investigated based on the self-imaging principle. We choose the three-, four-, and eight-CPCWs as typical structures to discuss the general characteristics of the M-CPCWs. It is found that around the frequency where the multiple guided modes are almost degenerate, the power transfer in the M-CPCWs is eliminated for any entrance. The frequency region for decoupling is insensitive to the number of coupled waveguides with the extinction ratios higher than -15 dB. The decoupling of the M-CPCWs exhibit many advantages and may have practical applications in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The propagation of counterpropagating modes in finite line-defect two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides consisting of square lattice dielectric cylinders has been investigated by a numerical study based on multiple scattering theory. In the presence of forward propagating external light at one given frequency, two counterpropagating guided modes with the same spatial frequency can be simultaneously excited. Determined by the Fourier transform of field distribution inside waveguides, the wave vectors and lateral profiles of modes are demonstrated to coincide with theoretical results from a simple model, which only has the advantage of an energy-confining mechanism in waveguides. In addition, the spectral amplitude ratio of the backward mode to the forward mode is found to decay with a larger waveguide width and higher frequency. With an appropriate choice of waveguide width, both backward mode and higher transversal modes can be inhibited effectively, giving rise to highly efficient single-mode transmission in a wide and flat spectrum.

Abstract:Photonic crystal is a structure with periodic dielectric constant and it has photonic band gap, in which the electromagnetic wave can not propagate in the structure. Two-dimensional slab photonic crystals can be fabricated by etching periodic air holes on a slab substrate, which has been investigated and applied extensively because of their good control of light propagation. Photonic crystal micro-cavities and waveguides can be achieved by introducing defects in the two-dimensional slab photonic crystal. The coupling of micro-cavities and waveguides can be controlled by adjusting geometric parameters, so as to realize the optical devices based on two-dimensional slab photonic crystals such as optical switching, optical storage and single photon source, etc. Prop erties of the micro-cavities and waveguides of two-dimensional slab photonic crystals are introduced, and their coupling control and potential applications in optical quantum information processing are discussed as well.

Abstract:The effects of structure parameters and structural deviations on the characteristics of photonic crystal directional couplers (PCDCs) were analyzed through a systematic simulation study. The relationship between coupling characteristics and structure parameters was discussed. The results reveal that the remained power in the coupling region is detrimental to reducing the insertion loss of PCDCs, especially for the PCDCs with shorter coupling length. An improved structure, which increases the radii of air holes in the post coupling region, was proposed to suppress the remained power and reduce the insertion loss effectively. The influence of structural deviations, which is caused by fabrication imperfections and results in the mismatch between experimental results and theoretical predictions, was also investigated using statistical methods. The simulation results show that the air hole position misalignment perpendicular to the waveguide direction has the largest effect on the insertion loss of PCDCs, and reducing r / a is helpful to improving the robustness of PCDCs.

Abstract:The design of photonic crystals using novel materials is of great significance for the construction of high-performance, next-generation photonic crystal devices. We propose a universal Band structure-Transmission optimization-Band structure method based on moving asymptotic (MMA) method, which can be widely applied to photonic crystal structures. In this paper, we use the method to optimize the band structure of high temperature superconducting photonic crystal, and obtain a wider photonic bandgap and better band flatness in a specific frequency band. This method avoids the disadvantages of traditional scanning methods such as low efficiency and high resource consumption, allows multi-parameter optimization, and improves the accuracy and effectiveness of band modulation based on the iterative process of numerical calculation. The study provides some insights for the design of novel wide-bandgap optical devices.

Abstract:The plane-wave expansion method is used to calculate the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal formed by a triangular lattice of anisotropic elliptic cylinders. After optimizing the parameters of the elliptic cylinders, we End a large bandgap (about 0.0449 w(e), w(e), = 2pic/a) at high frequencies beside a coexisting large absolute gap (about 0.035 w(e)) at low frequencies. Numerical results show that the optimal design is very stable under any parameter perturbation.

Abstract:In this paper,configuration parameters of the waveguide are altered independently or simultaneously to control the cutoff frequencies of the guided band.The independent control range of the upper and lower cutoff frequencies is 55.0% and 63.9% of the photonic band gap（PBG）,respectively.The regulating range of the simultaneous tuning can be as large as 28.6% in terms of the PBG,or 240% in terms of the bandwidth.This tuning cutoff frequency method provides an efficient way to tailor the guided band and further tune the optical properties of PhCWs.
