Abstract:Optical gain spectra of InGaAsP MQW for photonic crystal waveguide (PCWG) were simulated by the method with considering the variation of group velocity and the natural broadening synthetically. The dependence of the first mode's gain maximum on the width of PCWG was discussed. To improve the mode characteristics and the gain performances in the 2-D PCWG with relative large width, we proposed a new structure by combining a microcavity inside the 2-D PCWG. Mode characteristics in proposed structure were analyzed and the transmission performance was simulated by the FDTD method. The simulation results show that improved longitudinal mode characteristics can be obtained even in the W3 PCWG with relative wide waveguide width because of the additional frequency selecting mechanism provided by the microcavity.
Engineering Waveguide-Cavity Resonant Side Coupling in A Dynamically Tunable Ultracompact Photonic Crystal Filter

Abstract:We employ a plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method in combination with a Bloch-mode scattering model to scrutinize the optical performance of an ultracompact photonic crystal (PC) all-pass optical filter made from a single-mode PC waveguide side coupled with latitudinal optical microcavities. A series of geometrical configurations of resonant microcavities side coupled with the PC waveguide, such as single one-side and two-side, periodically cascaded one-side and two-side arrangement of microcavities, and different quantities of the latitudinal and longitudinal cavity scales, cavity-cavity distance, and cavity-waveguide distance have been systematically investigated. The calculated reflection spectra exhibit a continually splitting feature of resonant frequency when the cavity size is increased. The resonant frequency shifts toward higher frequencies when we reduce the indirect coupling coefficient by increasing the waveguide-cavity distance or by introducing a symmetric two-side structure of microcavities. Optical monomode operation of the reflection pulse can be achieved for appropriate distance between two horizontal microcavities. The resonant peaks gradually evolve into a distinct rectangular shape when we introduce periodically cascaded side-coupled microcavities along the waveguide direction, implying the creation of a forbidden minigap within the guided mode continuum. The optical filter in the two-side configurations has a better filtering performance than in the one-side constructions. The cascaded side-coupled cavity-waveguide structure can act as a high-performance optical delay line.

Abstract:Photonic crystal lasers with a high-Q factor and small mode volume are ideal light sources for on-chip nano-photonic integration. Due to the submicron size of their active region, it is usually difficult to achieve high output power and single-mode lasing at the same time. In this work, we demonstrate well-selected single-mode lasing in a line-defect photonic crystal cavity by coupling it to the high-Q modes of a short double-heterostructure photonic crystal cavity. One of the FP-like modes of the line-defect cavity can be selected to lase by thermo-optically tuning the high-Q mode of the short cavity into resonance. Six FP-like modes are successively tuned into lasing with side mode suppression ratios all exceeding 15 dB. Furthermore, we show a continuous wavelength tunability of about 10 nm from all the selected modes. The coupled cavity system provides a remarkable platform to explore the rich laser physics through the spatial modulation of vacuum electromagnetic field at submicron scale.

Abstract:A filling-factor-graded wavelike two-dimensional photonic crystal (2DPC) possessing a light-path bending effect that is polarization dependent is theoretically studied by using a qualitative analysis of the isofrequency curves. The numerical simulation results obtained by using the finite-difference time-domain method demonstrate that such a graded 2DPC has potential applications in a polarization splitter and a parallel-plane resonant cavity. A new kind of waveguide structure that combines a filling-factor-graded wavelike 2DPC and one-dimensional multilayer thin films is also discussed.

Abstract:In analogy to the impurity levels of semiconductors, optical cavities are created if irregular regions are introduced into the perfect photonic crystals. Photonic crystal single defect cavity is expected to obtain nearly thresholdless laser because it can create wavelength-scale small resonant mode with high-quality factors and high spontaneous emission coupling. In this paper, we have studied a new type of defect called annular microcavity created by drilling a circular hole in a usual defect cylinder in two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal by using the supercell method. The hole within the rod greatly modifies the defect modes by controlling filling fraction of dielectric material from the inner of the defect and lowering symmetry of the defect. It is found that the annular defect provides extra two more variables due to the hole (radius and refractive index) that can be utilized to alter the properties of the defect. And this opens up a new method to achieve and tune acceptor-mode cavity. Moving the hole can split the degenerate modes. The departure displacement determines the splitting space and the departure angle determines symmetry of distributions of electric fields. These results exhibit more advantages over the conventional defects and may be utilized to single-mode operation of microcavity laser.

Abstract:The topological corner state (TCS) and topological edge state (TES) have created new approaches to manipulate the propagation of light. The construction of a topological coupled cavity-waveguide (TCCW) based on the TCS and TES is worth looking forward to, due to its research prospects in realizing high-performance micro-nano integrated photonic devices. In this Letter, the TCCW is proposed in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC), which possesses strong optical localization, high quality factor, and excellent robustness compared with the conventional coupled cavity-waveguide (CCCW). This work will pave the way toward designing high-performance logic gates, lasers, filters, and other micro-nano integrated photonics devices and expanding their applications. Abstract:Based on the Helmholtz's equation and energy conservation law for the travelling wave field, the actual wave function for the TE travelling wave in the inhomogeneous dielectric is recommended, the original field distribution functions of the TE mode in symmetrical planar waveguide core layer and cladding layers are suggested. Moreover, the virgin phase shift for total reflection effect at the turning point is proposed, the eigen equation of a new improved WKB method for the symmetrical planar waveguide is given. As the concept of phase delay for optical wave in the dielectric and the new improved WKB method are engaged, the multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is considered as an equivalent of the triplex layer waveguide, a new method for analyzing the symmetrical multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is put forward. Several approximate formulas for computing the effective refractive index, the normalized frequency and mode field distribution are presented. Then, found on the maximal matching efficiency method for the mode field distributions, the expression of Gaussian approximation for the mode field distribution of single mode symmetrical multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is present. As an example, the normalized field distributions of GaAs/GaAlAs symmetrical multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is referred.

Abstract:A tunable photonic crystal switch based on two-mode-interference directional coupler is investigated. By modulating the central row of the rods of the coupler to change the real part of the refractive index, the bar-cross switch is obtained. Finite difference time-domain method (FDTD) is employed to predict the characterization of the switch, with crosstalk <-30dB and extinction ratio > 30dB.

Abstract:In this paper, an exact step-coupling theory is developed to describe the modes coupling behavior and lightwaves propagation for the power exchange between the waveguide modes in geometrical variation photonic crystal waveguide. The exact step-coupling theory provides a general description of the mode-coupling mechanism for light waveguide with geometrical variation with complete set of equations and solutions. The coupling equations of the exact step theory are derived and compared with the scattering matrix method, where simulation results show good agreement with an error of less than 2.2%. Subsequently, the coupling equations are applied to different case studies such as slab tapered waveguide and lossy "turn-on" waveguide. The transmission spectrum and field pattern distribution show that the lossy waveguide has a large radiation loss with an average transmission efficiency of less than 5%. The slab tapered waveguide can have more than 90% transmission efficiency with the convex curvature. The exact step-coupling theory can be applied to a vast range of geometrical variation photonic crystal based waveguides and it has quick and accurate convergence simulation results.

Abstract:The properties of the propagating field in multimode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) exhibiting no photonic band gaps (PBGs) are investigated. The transmission spectrum shows that the input field can be guided with high efficiency, and resemble index-guided modes owing to the combination of total internal reflection (TIR) and distributed Bragg reflection (DBR). Self-imaging effect happens and the filling fraction determines the beating lengths. The rows of air holes decide DBR coming from the mirrors on both sides of the guiding region, which governs the transmission spectrum. It provides a new way to realize the components for both polarizations by combining PBG and TIR effects in PCWs.

Abstract:The propagation of counterpropagating modes in finite line-defect two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides consisting of square lattice dielectric cylinders has been investigated by a numerical study based on multiple scattering theory. In the presence of forward propagating external light at one given frequency, two counterpropagating guided modes with the same spatial frequency can be simultaneously excited. Determined by the Fourier transform of field distribution inside waveguides, the wave vectors and lateral profiles of modes are demonstrated to coincide with theoretical results from a simple model, which only has the advantage of an energy-confining mechanism in waveguides. In addition, the spectral amplitude ratio of the backward mode to the forward mode is found to decay with a larger waveguide width and higher frequency. With an appropriate choice of waveguide width, both backward mode and higher transversal modes can be inhibited effectively, giving rise to highly efficient single-mode transmission in a wide and flat spectrum.

Abstract:We consider the coupling between three photonic crystal waveguides as a multimode interference system and show that the dispersion curves of the eigenmodes intersect or almost intersect. Degenerate modes appear in the system. Due to the strong coupling between the degenerate modes, the modal patterns of the guided modes are changed obviously. We find that the power distribution of output light waves of different frequencies is different by selecting the coherence length. At the crossing point, the multimode interference is deprived and power is confined to its input direction without observable transferring to other photonic crystal waveguides. On the basis of these, a wavelength de-multiplexer or multiplexer is designed.

Abstract:A photonic crystal (PhC) cavity formed by a closed interface between a dielectric PhC and a magnetooptical (MO) material PhC is proposed and analyzed theoretically. It is shown that such a cavity can support one-way rotating modes and thus the modal fields at different frequencies have a similar pattern. The loss effect of MO material is taken into consideration for the solution of quality-factors for the cavity. The coupling between a cavity with one-way state and a PhC waveguide is also studied through numerical simulations. Simulation results show that cavity mode only interacts with the waveguide mode propagating in a particular direction. This work paves the way to control waveguide-cavity interaction.

Abstract:In this letter, a frequency-selective circulator via mode coupling between a circular photonic crystal (CPC) surface waveguide and resonator systems is developed. The curve surface waveguide is formed by reducing the outermost rods radii. It has a transmission efficiency of 95% when the surface concentric distance is reduced by half. The resonator system, which consists of rod(s) are placed at each of the CPC perpendicular axis. Using optimized resonator physical parameters, selected frequencies are dropped at different locations with efficiency of 97%. It is suggested that several circulators can be cascaded to build a large scale frequency-selective multiplexing system.

Abstract:By employing 2D plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods, a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) based on the compound square lattice structure is presented. Band-gap can be observed for TM polarization and compared with the simple lattice structure based on the same material, the band-gap is increased by 62.7%. By optimizing the parameters we get the PCW with the propagation only near the wavelength of 1.55 µm and a flat group index curve in a wide wavelength range of 40 nm. And the group velocity dispersion compensation can be realized by the structure optimization. The results provide a reference for the study and application of photonic crystal waveguide based on the compound lattice structure.
Analysis to closed surface-wave photonic crystal waveguides based on coupled-resonator optical waveguide theory

Abstract:Traditionally, one can construct a waveguide by introduce defects into surface-wave photonic crystals (SPCs). Here we propose a new structure named closed SPC that can introduce waveguide modes out of photonic bandgap of surface-wave photonic crystal. In this paper, we have comprehensively analyzed dispersion relation, group velocity, normalized transmission and electric field distribution of closed SPC waveguides, and propose several methods to improve performance of the waveguide based on coupled-resonator optical waveguide theory. These methods can improve transmission efficiency from 10% to 60% and eliminate intraband oscillation by adjusting eigenfrequency and coupling factor . These methods are applicable to both single mode and multi mode situations. This letter also paves a new way for improving the performance of other coupled-resonator waveguides.

Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. The results are useful for the design of cavity-based devices for integration in nanophotonics. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) slab photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer were designed and fabricated. Full photonic band gap, band gap guided mode, and index guided mode were observed by measuring the transmission spectra. Mini-stop-bands in the PCWG were simulated with different structure paramaters. Coupling characteristics of PCWG were investigated theoretically considering the imperfections during the fabrication process. It was found that suppressing power reservation effect can realize both short coupling length and high coupling efficiency.
