Abstract:Orthogonal ASK/DPSK labeling, which encodes label information on optical carriers in a modulation format, is regarded as a competing scheme to subcarrier multiplexed optical labeling. However, the inherent cross-talk limits the extinction ratio (ER) of the payload and label sensitivity. In this paper, two optical coding methods-Manchester coding and 8B10B coding-which can remarkably improve the system quality to obtain acceptable ER are discussed. A novel optical packet encoding method-mark-insertion coding-is demonstrated to significantly reduce cross-talk between the amplitude shift keying (ASK) payload and the differential phase shift keying (DPSK) label through spectrum shaping. The performance of mark-insertion coding depends on the number of inserted ‘marks’. Finally, the transmission over a 40 km single mode fiber (SMF) is compared with optical label swapping for a 40 Gbit/s ASK payload and 2.5 Gbit/s DPSK label under these coding schemes. The experimental result is consistent with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Orthogonal amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) labeling is a promising approach to ultrahigh packet-rate routing and forwarding in the optical layer. However, the limitation on the payload extinction ratio (ER) is a detrimental effect for network scalability and transparency. This paper presents theoretical and experimental studies of ASK/DPSK labeling. It proposes that dc-balanced 8B10B coding can greatly improve ER tolerance, which in turn leads to better system performance. By using the 8B10B coding method, the paper demonstrates transmission and optical label swapping for a 40 Gb/s ASK payload and a 2.5 Gb/s DPSK label with an overall power penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label. The experimental results also show that the ER is allowed to be as high as 12 dB

Abstract:In this letter, we report a novel amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) optical packet encoding method that can significantly reduce the crosstalk between the ASK payload and the DPSK label through spectrum shaping. We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission for 4 x 40 Gb/s labeled return-to-zero signals, including label swapping by Kerr switching of one of the channels, with an overall penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for future ultrahigh-speed Internet protocol-over-WDM networks..

Abstract:SCM optical label swapping for high-speed payload has been a hot issue, since it was addressed as one of the most proposed technologies for building an optical switching network. In this work, a novel in-band SCM scheme of the optical label swapper with imposing Manchester encoding on the payload is proposed, in which interference between payload and label is small even though the SCM label is inserted at a low frequency. Simulations for packets composed of 100Gb/s QPSK payload and ASK SCM label over 80 km standard single-mode fiber are conducted and how performances of payload and label vary with different couple factor, label speed or SCM frequency are analyzed. Compared to in-band SCM label inserted by cascade modulation, performance of payload in the new architecture is almost independent of modulation index, and the receiver sensitivity of the payload is improved by nearly 10 dBm with only dispersion compensation.

The experimental results show that by applying mark insertion coding to an orthogonally labelled signal with an ASK payload up to 40 Gb/s and a 622 Mb/s or 2.5 Gb/s DPSK label, the tolerable payload extinction ratio can be greatly increased up to 13 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optically labeled signal based on return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying for payload at 10-Gb/s and amplitude-shift keying for label at 622-Mb/s. Receiver sensitivity of similar to -36 dBm and penalty-free transmission over 80-km standard single-mode fiber are achieved for both the payload (with dispersion compensation) and the label. This labeling scheme allows the use of a deeply saturated semiconductor optical amplifier to perform polarization-insensitive label erasure. Label swapping is demonstrated with moderate penalty.

Abstract:We investigate the transmission characteristics of a two-level optically labeled signal with amplitude-shift keying (ASK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulation. Theoretical analysis suggests that a precompensation scheme has a better transmission performance for a 10-Gbit/s ASK payload and 2.5-Gbit/s DPSK label compared with postcompensation, which has been confirmed by our transmission experiment. The limitations resulting from the extinction ratio and the laser linewidth are also discussed.

Abstract:We report an experimental investigation of transmission and transparent wavelength conversion properties of a two-level optically labeled signal using amplitude-shift-keying/differential-phase-shift-keying orthogonal modulation. Error-free transmission of a 10-Gb/s payload and 2.5-Gb/s label over 80-km nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber is achieved with less than 1-dB power penalty. Transparent wavelength label swapping based on four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber is also demonstrated, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for optical labeling.

Abstract:We have simplified the label swapping processing in optical labeled packet switching networks by using orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) label technique. By using OFDM label, the label swapping can be realized without old label erasure. We have applied this technique in a labeled packet networking with 112-Gb/s polarization multiplexing return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying payload and coherent detection. Multiple label swapping processing has been demonstrated with small optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty.

Abstract:We present a novel scheme of high bit rate ASK/FSK orthogonal labelling. The FSK transmitter is based on two external modulated lasers driven by two inverted electrical data. The generated FSK is easy for detection and has a small cross-talk to optical label signal. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel orthogonal optical labeling scheme based on 40-Gbits optical frequency-shift keying (FSK) payload and 2.5-Gbit s intensity-modulated (IM) labeling. Using the technology of carrier-suppressed modulation and conversion of differential phase-shift keying to IM, only one light source is needed to generate the optical FSK signal. The system performance, including range of IM modulation depth, bit error ratio, and dispersion limitation, is carefully investigated by numerical simulation. With IM modulation depth of 0.4, the 40 Gbit s FSK payload and 2.5-Gb s IM label are transmitted over a 50-km standard single mode fiber (SMF) with 0.87 and 0.92 dB penalty and show immunity to input power range upto 11 and 15 dB, respectively. Optimal methods to improve the system performance are also proposed and discussed. After optimization, the IM modulation depth can be reduced to 0.2. Abstract:For the first time, we propose a novel BER estimation algorithm for 8PSK signal, the idea of which is also applicable to other multi-dimensional and multi-level modulation formats. And a 2 × 4 orthogonal optical label swapping based on 120Gb/s 8PSK payload and 78Mb/s ASK label by using optical switching devices is demonstrated. Through numerical simulations under different circumstances, we get some orthogonal label switching network's characteristics by analyzing the receiver BER utilizing the new BER algorithm, such as that different combination of label will have a different impact on the transmission performance of the packets. In addition, by changing the receiver optical power, transmitter optical power and optical power launched into the fiber, we get the system's receiver sensitivity, the optimum transmitter power and optimum optical power injected into the fiber, which will be a reference for the actual systems' design.

Abstract:A novel orthogonal modulation scheme of polarization-shift-keying label over vestigial sideband payload is proposed and experimentally demonstrated over a 43-Gb/s all-optical-label-switching transmission. With this scheme, a high extinction ratio of the label is reached, while a spectral efficiency of 0.8 b/s/Hz is achieved by weakening the imperfection of the high-speed pulse sequence in polarization modulation. Furthermore, this modulation scheme is relatively irrelevant with payload bit rate. The payload and label penalties after 80-km NZDSF fiber transmission and label erasure are 1.5 and 1 dB, respectively. The influence of filter center frequency offset is also investigated. Besides, a label rewriting method is introduced to simplify label processing in intermedia nodes. All these results show that this scheme can be a candidate technique for the next-generation optical network.

Abstract:A novel scheme based on 40Gb/s vestigial sideband modulation for optical payload and label multiplex and separation in all optical label switching (AOLS) networks is firstly proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The payload is combined and separated with wavelength labels by optical filters. The experiment results show that after label separation, the power penalties of payload and label are both very little. The influence of the wavelength difference between label and payload is also discussed. The power penalty of payload can be less than 1dB as long as the wavelength difference is larger than 0.1nm. This scheme highly reduces the channel bandwidth of payload and label and is proposing to be used in future optical Internet.
