Effects of Organic Compounds with Different Biochemical Characteristics on Disinfectant-Resistant Microbes in Chlorine Dioxide Disinfection Water

Abstract:This work investigated the contribution of organic compounds with different biochemical properties in disinfected water with different chlorine dioxide (ClO2) concentrations to the regrowth potential of disinfectant-resistant microbes. After adding ClO2 for 24 h, the organic compounds biodegradability and the microbial community composition and diversity in disinfected water varied with ClO2 concentration. Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) increased from 40.78, 46.40, 37.29, and 64.78 µg/L to 140.73, 118.04, 108.74, and 121.07 µg/L after culturing the samples disinfected with ClO2 concentration between 0.6 and 2.4 mg/L respectively, and degradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) was also increased. The increase of total cell concentration (TCC) and intact cell concentration (ICC) did not result in the AOC and BDOC decrease in these cultured samples. On the contrary, compared with disinfected samples, particulate and colloidal organic carbon (PCOC) in all cultured samples decreased, and the non-biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (NBDOC) decreased after culturing the water samples disinfected with 0.6 mg/L ClO2 concentration. Therefore, AOC and BDOC might have some defects in predicting the biological risk of drinking water. There might be a fraction of non-biodegradable organic compounds that could be preferentially metabolized by disinfectant-resistant microbes in the disinfected samples, and were affected by the disinfectant-resistant microbial community composition and diversity.
