Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

I. I NTRODUCTION With the increasing bandwidth demand and possible frequency congestion in low frequency band, the emerging radio over fiber (RoF) technique becomes a promising method in providing broadband wireless access over wide areas. Among RoF systems, multiband optical modulation technique is an attractive method, which simultaneously delivers baseband, micro-wave (MW) and millimeter-wave (MMW) signals (1). It exhibits flexible application potential in future multiservice access since wireline and multiple wireless services are seamlessly converged in a common network. In addition, the convergence of video, voice and data into triple play service (TPS) in a single network is an effective solution for network service providers. Passive optical network (PON) technology is believed to be a promising scheme to provide TPS in an integrated platform with a cost-effective configuration (2). Since PON has advantages including high capacity, security, and upgradeability, many efforts have been paid to enable broadcasting functions in PON (3), where single broadcast video service is overlaid over the downlink point-to-point data. With the growth of different emerging services such as video-on-demand, it is valuable to provide multiple broadcast services to the customers. In this paper, we perform three demonstrations based on converged RoF and baseband transmission using integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) (4). The DPMZM comprises a pair of x-cut MZMs (MZMA, MZMB) embedded in the two arms of a main MZM structure. The two sub-MZMs have the same structure and performance, and the main MZM combines the outputs of the two sub-MZMs. The first demonstration is a multi-band transmission system to deliver baseband, MW, and MMW signals (5). The second system is a PON which generates and sends video, voice and data from the central office (6). The last one is simultaneous transmission of high-speed point-to-point data and double broadcast services in a PON system (7). All these schemes are based on DPMZM, and upstream transmission is realized by employing carrier re-modulation method.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a bidirectional radio-over-fiber (RoF) system based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). In this system, phase-modulated 5.25-GHz radio frequency (RF) carrying 850 Mb/s is used for the downstream signal. Optical envelope detection of 10-GHz RF carrying 850 Mb/s is achieved in an RSOA. Both signals share a single fiber link and the same light source by exploiting optical carrier remodulaiton. Moreover, there is no need to employ RF down-conversion technology for RoF uplink. This makes the proposed system simpler and more cost-effective. The experimental results indicate that after simultaneous transmission of downstream and upstream signals over 25-km fiber, the receiver sensitivities are -22 and -14.5 dBm, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate simultaneous generation and transmission of downstream multiband signals and upstream data in a bidirectional radio-over-fiber system. The scheme is based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator and a following single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator. Multiband data including baseband, frequency-doubled, and frequency-quadrupled signals are generated through optical carrier suppression and frequency-shifting techniques. Upstream data transmission is realized by remodulation of the downstream differential phase-shift-keying signal without the need of additional light source and wavelength management at the base station.

Abstract:Hybrid optical access networks, integrating fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems that share a single distributed infrastructure, are promising for future multiservice access networks. The primary concern is to enable RoF and FTTH systems to transmit both radio-frequency (RF) and baseband (BB) signals on a single wavelength over a single fiber. This study experimentally demonstrates simultaneous generation and transmission of a wired-line BB signal and a wireless RF signal on a single wavelength, using one external modulator. The hybrid signals transmitted over standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) do not suffer from periodic performance fading due to fiber dispersion. Following transmission over 50-km SSMF, the power penalties of both RF and BB signals are less than 0.2 dB.

Abstract:A hybrid optical access configuration for simultaneously providing wired and wireless services was proposed. The proposed system can also remote deliver doubled local-oscillator signal, which can be reused in the uplink. At the central station, the signals used for wireless links are subcarrier multiplexing and modulated as PSK format, and the wired baseband signals are directly modulated as NRZ format, then two signals are simultaneously generated by an external integrated modulator and transmitted on the same wavelength. The doubled local-oscillator signal is extracted in the wireless links, then used in the uplinks, the recieved eye diagrams are pretty well.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex radio-over-fiber (RoF) system with colorless upstream transmission based on orthogonal phase-correlated modulation (OPM). This new OPM scheme, which realized by a polarization rotator (PR) and a single-driver Mach-Zahnder modulator (MZM) at the central office (CO), achieves polarization-orthogonality between the optical carrier (OC) and subcarriers generated by radio frequency (RF) signals. By adjusting a polarization controller (PC) in the remote access units (RAU), different modulation schemes can be flexibly implemented, e.g. double-sideband (DSB) modulation for low RF service and optical carrier suppression (OCS) modulation for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) service. In the meantime, the OC can be reused for the upstream transmission without any filtering and additional PC. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of proposed scheme, where downstream 800-Mb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal at 58 GHz as an mm-wave service and 800-Mb/s OFDM signal at 0.3 GHz as a low frequency wireless service, as well as an upstream 1-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) are simultaneously delivered in a shared architecture. By providing heterogeneous services and colorless upstream transmission, the proposed architecture can be seamlessly integrated in wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON).

Abstract:This study presents a novel hybrid access network for 60-GHz wireless and wireline applications using a frequency quadrupling technique. Both 1.2-Gb/s eight phase-shift keying and 1.25-Gb/s quadruple phase-shift keying radio-frequency (RF) signals for radio-over-fiber (RoF) links are demonstrated. A 1.25-Gb/s baseband (BB) on-off keying (OOK) signal for fiber-to-the-x services is simultaneously generated and transmitted using the same modulator. The proposed system does not suffer from RF fading and needs no narrowband optical filter at the remote node to separate the RF and BB signals. A frequency quadrupling method for RoF link is realized to reduce the bandwidth requirement of the transmitter. Following 25-km single-mode fiber transmission, the observed receiving power penalty is negligible for both RF and BB signals. Wavelength reuse for a 1.25-Gb/s OOK signal via a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier for uplink transmission is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:This paper describes convergence of optical and wireless access networks for delivering high-bandwidth integrated services over optical fiber and air links. Several key system technologies are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We report here, for the first ever, a campus-wide field trial demonstration of radio-over-fiber (RoF) system transmitting uncompressed standard-definition (SD) high-definition (HD) real-time video contents, carried by 2.4-GHz radio and 60-GHz millimeter-wave signals, respectively, over 2.5-km standard single mode fiber (SMF-28) through the campus fiber network at Georgia Institute of Technology (GT). In addition, subsystem technologies of Base Station and wireless tranceivers operated at 60 GHz for real-time video distribution have been developed and tested.

Abstract:We have designed and experimentally demonstrated radio-over-fiber (ROF) systems to simultaneously generate optical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) and centralized lightwaves using one low-bandwidth intensity modulator (IM) with low-frequency local oscillator (LO) signals while simplifying the transmission design and reducing the cost of the base station (BS). The techniques based on double-sideband (DSB) and single-sideband (SSB) signals for ROF systems are discussed in detail in terms of architecture efficiency, bandwidth requirement, and fiber transmission performance. The repetitive frequency of the optical mm-wave carriers are four times of that of the LO in central office (CO) by using DSB scheme. Full-duplex transmission services have been successfully realized over 20-km single-mode fiber (SMF) based on wavelength-reuse technique. In order to mitigate chromatic dispersion, the SSB technique has also been investigated in this paper. We had realized an ROF system that attained dispersion-free transmission and a negative power penalty by using SSB generation. We also quantified the optical carrier-to-sideband ratio (CSR) of downstream transmission in this ROF link and established that the performance of ROF system can be significantly improved when the optical signals are transmitted at a CSR value of 0 dB. The proposed architectures require much less bandwidth of the modulators, receiver sensitivity, system operation efficiency, and reliability.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a real-time optical heterodyning and envelope detection-enabled orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing-based Q-band radio-over-fiber (OFDM-RoF) system. Envelope-detector-based down-conversion is applied to the mobile terminal (MT), which makes MT insensitive to the phase noise of the beating millimeter wave signal and enables the generation of RoF signals using two free-running non-narrow line-width distributed feedback lasers in the central office. The error-free transmission real-time Reed-Solomon- coded 16-quadrature-amplitude modulation(16-QAM)-OFDM-RoF signals with a net bit rate of 1.2 Gb/s at 35/40 GHz over 4.5-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 0.8-m wireless distance is reported in this paper. Additionally, the transmission performance of the signals at 35 GHz with the net bit rate from 1.5 to 5.9 Gb/s is also investigated by offline digital signal processing approaches. It indicates that the BER of the signal with the net rate up to 4.4 Gb/s after the SMF and wireless link transmission is below a 7% hard-decision forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3.

Abstract:In this paper, we have proposed and demonstrated a novel lightwave centralized wavelength division multiplexing radio-over-fiber (WDM-RoF) system employing OFDM-CPM generation and carrier-reuse technique. The 4×2.5-Gb/s OFDM-CPM wireless signal and upstream OOK signal are transmitted over 25km SMF-28 successfully. We further compare the OFDM-CPM signal with an OFDM-QPSK signal, and the experimental results suggest that OFDM-CPM modulation scheme will be a promising candidate for future WDM-RoF system.

Abstract:We propose a novel radio-over-fiber system to provide full-duplex services by using optical differential phase-shift keying modulation format at the central station for downstream and ON-OFF keying remodulation of the downlink carrier at the base station (BS) for upstream. The optical carrier suppression modulation scheme is employed to simultaneously generate and up-convert 40-GHz optical millimeter wave. As the same optical carrier is used for both uplink and downlink, no additional light source is required at the BS, which greatly reduces the cost and simplifies the overall system. Simulations and experimental results show that the bidirectional 2.5-Gb/s data is successfully transmitted over 40-km single-mode fiber (SMF-28) with less than 2-dB power penalty.
