Abstract:Microwave photonic (MWP) filters using on-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering offer great potential for next-generation radio frequency (RF) applications due to the unprecedented high spectral resolution, flexible programmability, and ultra-wideband frequency agility. Although impressive functionalities have been reported, limited link performance, due to the amplification noise induced by the Brillouin gain process, hinders the practical deployment in existing RF applications. In this paper, we present the first comprehensive numerical and experimental study of chip-based Brillouin MWP bandpass filters implemented in a range of link configurations. In the experiments, key RF performance figures of merit, including link gain, noise figure, passband resolution, bandwidth tunability, and passband extinction of chip-based Brillouin filters are experimentally investigated and numerically analyzed. This comprehensive study points out a preferable filter scheme with optimized system-level performance. The numerical model developed in this paper allows for extrapolations to further improve the performance. The systematic work establishes a feasible design route for achieving high link-performance chip-based Brillouin microwave photonic bandpass filters.

Abstract:A tunable and configurable photonic microwave bandpass filter with negative coefficient is proposed and demonstrated. Based on all-optical mixing in an intensity modulator and a phase modulator, the filter frequency response is related with the frequency of local RF signal (LO) signal and dc bias applied to the intensity modulator. The free spectral range of filter passband can be tuned conveniently by changing the LO frequency. When 8GHz LO signal is applied, an equivalent bandpass filter with null-to-null bandwidth of 8.1 GHz is obtained for a 25km radio-over-fiber link. Meanwhile, by varying the dc bias, the weights and the number of taps can be adjusted to tune the performance of filter. Therefore, a flexible transversal bandpass filter implemented in a radio-over-fiber link is realized along with the tunability and reconfiguration. Copyright 2006 IEICE.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors present and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical frequency up-conversion and demultiplexing method in a radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. A Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a microwave photonic filter based on a fiber ring structure are used to simultaneously realize the frequency up-conversion and demultiplexing functions. In this proposed system, only a fiber ring and a photodiode (PD) are needed in the base station (BS) to fulfill the signal processing functions. This simple solution makes the base stations more cost-effective, and shows good application potential in the future radio-over-fiber systems. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:A novel method of simultaneous realization of optical carrier-suppression and single-sideband modulation using fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter is presented. In order to enhance transmission performance of radio over fiber links, we use a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter to filter out one sideband as well as suppress the optical carrier power. The results demonstrate 20.5dB and 14.2dB improvement in the signal noise ratios when 18GHz and 10GHz microwave signals carrying 5Mbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:An all-optical microwave bandpass filter employing air-core photonic bandgap fiber (PBGF) based loop mirror is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A segment of 20 m air-core PBGF is used in the experiment. The frequency response with negative coefficient is realized and can be tuned by changing the incident optical wavelength because of the wavelength-dependent high-birefringence of PBGF. When the input wavelength varies from 1566 nm to 1584 nm, the differential group delay (DGD) of PBGF changes from 30ps to 110 ps, therefore, the free-spectral range (FSR) of the proposed filter changes correspondingly from 33 GHz to 9.6 GHz

Abstract:Besides the general advantages of microwave photonic filters for signal processing, the integrated waveguide ones have their potential to bring down volume and weight of systems. An integrated polymeric waveguide ring resonator was designed and fabricated by a simple UV-based soft-lithography technology, with which the single sideband filtering response was realized and 20 Mbps QPSK signal carried by 14.35 GHz microwave was transmitted successfully over 25 km single mode fiber.

Abstract:Integrated waveguide microwave photonic filters (MPFs) have the potential to bring down volume, weight, and power consumption of signal processing equipment besides the common advantages of discrete-component-based MPFs. A polysiloxane-liquid polymer-based optical waveguide microring resonator was designed and fabricated by a simple ultraviolet-based soft-imprint technology, with which the quasi-single-sideband filtering for the 10 to 22 GHz microwave signal was realized and 20 Mbps quadrature phase shift keying signal carried by 14.35 GHz microwave transmission over a 25 km single mode fiber was demonstrated. Abstract:A novel method is proposed and demonstrated to simultaneously realize phase‐to‐intensity modulation conversion (PM‐IM) and efficiency improvement using a fiber Fabry‐Perot (FFP) tunable filter. To achieve the conversion of phase modulation to intensity modulation, the phase‐modulated light is transmitted from one of the slopes of the FFP tunable filter to break the amplitude balance of the sidebands. Meanwhile, the modulation depth is increased due to the more suppression of the optical carrier than one of the first‐order sidebands. The results demonstrate that the PM‐IM conversion has been achieved and an about 10‐dB gain of electrical signal power could be obtained with suitable optical carrier suppression for both 10‐and 20‐GHz microwave input. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A novel all-optical frequency up-conversion method implementing microwave photonic filter in a radio-over-fiber (RoF) link is proposed and demonstrated. The electrooptical phase modulator, electrooptic intensity modulator in combination with 75-km single-mode fiber (SMF) is used to form the microwave photonic filter and fulfill the frequency up-conversion function at the same time. The technique requires large modulation index at the phase modulator, which simultaneously increases the efficiency of the frequency conversion. The proposed approach has been demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:A method for subcarrier demultiplexing in Radio-over-Fiber system has been proposed and verified experimentally. A continuously tunable single resonance microwave photonic filter using the tunable fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) as the slicing filter, is implemented to realize the demultiplexing. Two subcarriers, one is 2.4GHz representing the wireless LAN signal , the other is 900MHz representing the Cellular signal, can be demultiplexed separately. The proposed approach has been demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally.

Abstract:A dual-band optical filter based on a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. A numerical model based on transfer matrix method is utilized to simulate the performance of this device. The coupling between the microring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot resonator formed by nanoholes gives rise to the dual-band optical filtering spectrum. In our experiment, a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes was fabricated on a commercial 220-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Good performance was achieved with measured extinction ratio of 9 dB, insertion loss of lower than 1 dB, and quality factor of 11900. Both experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.

Abstract:The tunable microwave photonic filter based on a fiber ring and Er-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA) was proposed.By introducing a section of Er-doped fiber(EDF) into the fiber ring,the loss of the signal can be compensated by the EDFA gain through adjusting the pump power,which can largely increase the number of the effective sampling taps,and improve the performance of the microwave photonic filter notably.When the pump power was set to be 42.7 mW,a microwave bandpass filter with the 3 dB bandwidth of 0.15 MHz,the Q factor up to 100 and the extinction ratio up to 20 dB was achieved.By employing a tunable optical delay line in the above fiber ring,a tunable microwave photonic filter was realized through tuning the length of the optical delay line.The proposed tunable microwave photonic filter can find great applications in microwave signal processing and ROF system.

Abstract:A tunable optical waveguide ring resonator is proposed and demonstrated for microwave photonic filtering. The ring resonator consists of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) as the tunable coupler and two micro-heaters as the thermal-optic phase shifters. It was fabricated with polymer PSQ-Ls by a novel and simple UV-based soft imprint technique. The coupling states, over-, critical- and under-coupling, were obtained with the phase shifter on the arm of MZI and the maximum notch depth of about 18dB was achieved. The resonant frequency can also be tuned with the phase shifter on the ring waveguide. The notch filtering function to obtain single sideband RF signal was realized with the tunable ring resonator.

Abstract:A channel-selectable optical link based on a silicon microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated.This optical link consists of the wavelength-tunable microring modulators and the filters,defined on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform.With a p-i-n junction embedded in the microring modulator,light at the resonant wavelength of the ring resonator is modulated.The 2nd-order microring add-drop filter routes the modulated light.The channel selectivity is demonstrated by heating the microrings.With a thermal tuning efficiency of 5.9mW/nm,the filter drop port response was successfully tuned with 0.8nm channel spacing.We also show that modulation can be achieved in these channels.This device aims to offer flexibility and increase the bandwidth usage efficiency in optical interconnection.

Abstract:Microwave photonic filters (MPF) are among the most crucial components required for meeting the demands of high-speed and high-frequency signal processing of modern telecommunication systems. For the first time, here, we propose an MPF based on a double wavelength spacing Brillouin-Raman fiber laser (BRFL) to realize a versatile bandpass filter. The proposed setup generated 100 optical taps output with ~ 20 GHz spacings as the light source of the MPF. A dispersive medium of 5 km long single mode fiber and 3.46 km long dispersion compensating fiber were used to characterize the effect of the time delay on the central frequency of the MPF passband. A reconfigurable 3-dB bandwidth from 150 MHz to 1.12 GHz centered around 10.3 GHz is achievable by varying the BRFL optical channel numbers using 10 to 100 optical taps with 20 GHz spacing. The 3-dB bandwidth and Q-factor of the proposed MPF were investigated experimentally and found to be in good agreement with simulation, demonstrating the potential of the BRFL as a laser source for the realization of flexible and versatile radio frequency transversal filters with potentially reduced cost and complexity.

Abstract:Two ultra-compact silicon bandpass filters are proposed and partly experimentally presented. Both of them have wide bandwidth tunability. Based on the first filter (filter-I), the second filter (filter-II) was designed and has large Free Spectrum Range (FSR). Two filters share the same architecture (matrix architecture), consisting two groups of micro-ring resonator-cascade structures (simply called as micro-ring resonator in this letter). Using this matrix architecture, a wide bandwidth tunability from 75 to 300 GHz can be achieved in filter-I. Based on matrix architecture, double micro-ring resonator (MRR) were adopted and Vernier effect was used in design. It is showed both in simulation and experiment that the FSR of filter-II exceeded 35 nm (around 40 nm in simulation), which is much larger than the FSR of single MRR. Filter-II’s tunability of center wavelength in simulation covers most wavelength from 1530 to 1570 nm. The comparison of bandwidth tunability between filter-I and II reveals that adding paths in matrix architecture may be more effective than adopting high-order micro-ring resonators.

The advantages of this kind of MPF compared with previous schemes axe more stable and simpler due to using only one fiber delay line, which can implement a wide range of FSR.
