Abstract:Brain disorders are impacting billions of individuals worldwide. Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging is the most widely used imaging modality to examine brain abnormalities. However, MR images may be corrupted by the presence of noise primarily Rician noise, artifacts, and distortions that affect the accuracy in the detection of abnormalities. To overcome these issues, a novel Fuzzy Type-II driven modified Anisotropic Diffusion filter (FDAD) framework is proposed, where the edge threshold constraint of the diffusion coefficient has been automated by calculation of ultra-fuzziness in an image instead of manual calculation. Ultra-fuzziness keeps edges and boundaries better with an appropriate threshold value and also prevents over-smoothing and restores fine details of abnormalities in MR images. After this, the Extended Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (ECLAHE) is applied to sharpen the details of abnormalities. Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) functional MR (fMR) image datasets are used to demonstrate the proficiency of the proposed work. To gauge the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, a qualitative analysis has been carried out on a subset of fMR datasets, each characterized by different noise variations. The assessment encompassed both qualitative and quantitative metrics to compare the proposed method with the prevailing state of the art. A parametric quantitative analysis of the proposed method is performed and plotted using full reference image interpretation, human visual system, and no reference image interpretation. Finally, these results collectively illustrate the proficiency of the method to enhance and preserve the edges and sharpen details of abnormalities with removal of Rician noise.
