Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous carbon FDU-16 rhombic dodecahedral single crystals with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im (3) over barm) have been successfully synthesized by employing an organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) and phenol/formaldehyde resol in basic aqueous solution. Synthetic factors (including reaction time, temperature, and stirring rate) are explored for controlling the formation of rhombic dodecahedral single crystals. The optimal stirring rate and the reaction temperature are 300 +/- 10 rpm and similar to 66 degrees C, respectively. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and ultramicrotomy are applied to study the fine structures of the carbon single crystals. The mesopores are arranged in body-centered cubic symmetry throughout the entire particle. Surface steps are clearly observed in the {110} surface, which suggests a layer-by-layer growth of the mesoporous carbon FDU-16 single crystals. Cryo-SEM results from the reactant solution confirm the formation of resol/F127 unit micelles, further supporting the layer-by-layer growth process. The mesoporous carbon FDU-16 single crystals grow up to the final size of 2-4 mu m within 2 days. These findings may have consequences for the growth mechanism of other carbon materials in aqueous solution; moreover, the high-quality single crystals also have potential applications in nanodevice technologies.

Abstract:A facile aqueous pathway has been demonstrated for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbon materials with hexagonal or cubic structures through the self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resols and triblock copolymer templates. Highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-16 with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im3m) have been synthesized under a basic aqueous condition by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) as a template. Hydrocarbon (hexadecane or decane) can be used in the Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20) system as a swelling agent to synthesize highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-15 with 2-D hexagonal (p6m) structure. FDU-15 has a pore size of 3.8 nm and a BET surface area up to 1040 m(2)/g, and FDU-16 with cubic mesostructure has a pore diameter of 3.2 nm and a BET surface area of similar to 1030 m(2)/g. A variety of hydrocarbons with different chain length were used and the swelling ability was estimated in detail.

Abstract:The syntheses of a family of highly ordered mesoporous polymers and carbon frameworks from organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymers with soluble, low-molecular-weight phenolic resin precursors (resols) by an evaporation induced self-assembly strategy have been reported in detail. The family members include two-dimensional hexagonal (space group, p6m), three-dimensional bicontinuous (Ia (3) over bard), body-centered cubic (Im (3) over barm), and lamellar mesostructures, which are controlled by simply adjusting the ratio of phenol/template or poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) in the templates. A five-step mechanism from organic-organic assembly has been demonstrated. Cubic FDU-14 with a gyroidal mesostructure of polymer resin or carbon has been synthesized for the first time by using the copolymer Pluronic P123 as a template in a relatively narrow range. Upon calcination at 350 degrees C, the templates should be removed to obtain mesoporous polymers, and further heating at above a critical temperature of 600 degrees C transforms the mesoporous polymers to the homologous carbon frameworks. The mesoporous polymer resin and carbon product materials exhibit ordered structures, high surface areas, (670-1490 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (0.65-0.85 cm(3)/g), and uniform, large pore sizes (7.0-3.9 nm), as well as very thick pore walls (6-8 nm). The carbon open frameworks with covalently bonded constructions and thick pore walls exhibit high thermal stability (> 1400 degrees C). Our results show that the feed gas used during the calcination has a great influence on the porosity of the products. The presence of a small amount of oxygen facilitates the large pore sizes and high surface areas of mesoporous materials with different mesostructures. An extraction method employing sulfuric acid can also decompose the template from hexagonal mesostructured polymers with little framework shrinkage. Preliminary studies of the mechanical and electrochemical properties of mesoporous carbon molecular sieves are also presented.

Abstract:The effect of phenols reactivity with formaldehyde on the formation of ordered mesoporous carbons has been investigated. A strategy to accelerate the polymerization of phenolic resins by using strongly acidic conditions is proposed. The self-assembly of resorcinol-formaldehyde and block copolymers (e.g., F127) under highly acidic concentrations (e.g., 1.5 M HCl) is probably driven by the I+X-S+ mechanism and hydrogen bonding and affords a highly reproducible approach for synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbons. The synthesis can be readily scaled up with no change in sample quality. The carbon material obtained (denoted as C-ORNL-1) exhibits highly ordered hexagonal mesostructure, with a typical BET surface area of similar to 600 m(2)/g, pore size of 6.3 nm, and pore volume of similar to 0.60 cm(3)/g. One of the unique structural features of C-ORNL-1 is its high thermal stability; it can be graphitized at 2600 degrees C while considerable mesoporosity is maintained.

Abstract:A series of highly ordered mesoporous carbonaceous frameworks with diverse symmetries have been successfully synthesized by using phenolic resols as a carbon precursor and mixed amphiphilic surfactants of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) and reverse PPO-PEO-PPO as templates by the strategy of evaporation-induced organic-organic self-assembly (EISA). The transformation of the ordered mesostructures from face-centered (Fd3m) to body-centered cubic (Im3m), then 2D hexagonal (P6mm), and eventually to cubic bicontinuous (Ia3d) symmetry has been achieved by simply adjusting the ratio of triblock copolymers to resol precursor and the relative content of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymer F127, as confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen-sorption measurements. The blends of block copolymers can interact with resol precursors and tend to self-assemble into cross-linking micellar structures during the solvent-evaporation process, which provides a suitable template for the construction of mesostructures. The assembly force comes from the hydrogen-bonding interactions between organic mixed micelles and the resol-precursor matrix. The BET surface area for the mesoporous carbonaceous samples calcined at 600 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere is around 600 m2 g(-1), and the pore size can be adjusted from 2.8 to 5.4 nm. An understanding of the organic-organic self-assembly behavior in the mixed amphiphilic surfactant system would pave the way for the synthesis of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:A facile dual-templating approach is demonstrated to prepare hierarchically ordered macro-/mesoporous carbons. Monodispersed silica colloidal crystals are used as a hard template, amphiphilic triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO as a soft template, and soluble resols as a carbon source. The procedure involves packing and aging of silica microspheres, evaporation-induced organic-organic assembly of mesostructures in the void of microspheres, thermosetting and carbonization of phenolic formaldehyde (PF), and removal of silica scaffolds by HF. The obtained porous carbons have a highly ordered face-centered cubic macrostructure with tunable pore sizes of 230-430 nm and interconnected windows with a size of 30-65 nm. The rigid silica hard templates can prevent the shrinkage of the mesostructure during the thermosetting and carbonization process, resulting in large cell parameters (similar to 18 nm) and pore sizes (similar to 11 nm). The bimodal porous carbon materials have large BET surface areas (up to 760 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (similar to 1.25 cm(3)/g), and partially graphitized frameworks. With the increase in the silica sphere diameter, the BET surface areas and the window sizes increase. The hierarchically ordered carbon structures show strong diffraction at wavelengths of 500-690 nm depending on the treatment used.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:Morphology and size controlled mesoporous single crystals are of special significance in various applications. In this work, ethane-included PMO single crystals with cubic and truncated-cubic morphologies have been prepared by self-assembling the surfactant and organosilica precursor in aqueous solution. The PMO single crystals are highly uniform in external morphologies and the particle sizes can be trimmed down to less than one micrometre. With the cubic pore structure, the relatively small particle sizes, and the easily-functionalized organic groups embedded in the pore walls, the PMO single crystals may find new applications in various fields.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous polymer-silica and carbon-silica nanocomposites with interpenetrating networks have been successfully synthesized by the evaporation-induced triconstituent co-assembly method, wherein soluble resol polymer is used as an organic precursor, prehydrolyzed TEOS is used as an inorganic precursor, and triblock copolymer F127 is used as a template. It is proposed for the first time that ordered mesoporous nanocomposites have "reinforced concrete"-structured frameworks. By adjusting the initial mass ratios of TEOS to resol, we determined the obtained nanocomposites possess continuous composition with the ratios ranging from zero to infinity for the two constituents that are "homogeneously" dispersed inside the pore walls. The presence of silicates in nanocomposites dramatically inhibits framework shrinkage during the calcination, resulting in highly ordered large-pore mesoporous carbon-silica nanocomposites. Combustion in air or etching in HF solution can remove carbon or silica from the carbon-silica nanocomposites and yield ordered mesoporous pure silica or carbon frameworks. The process generates plenty of small pores in carbon or/and silica pore walls. Ordered mesoporous carbons can then be obtained with large pore sizes of approximately 6.7 nm, pore volumes of approximately 2.0 cm(3)/g, and high surface areas of approximately 2470 m(2)/g. The pore structures and textures can be controlled by varying the sizes and polymerization degrees of two constituent precursors. Accordingly, by simply tuning the aging time of TEOS, ordered mesoporous carbons with evident bimodal pores at 2.6 and 5.8 nm can be synthesized.

Abstract:A general confined coassembly process has been demonstrated to produce discrete uniform mesoporous carbon microspheres with 0.8-1 μm particle size using 3-D-ordered macroporous silica as the template. The obtained mesoporous carbon microspheres (MC-MSs) have uniform and discrete spherical morphology, variable symmetry (hexagonal p6mm or cubic Im3m) of mesostructures, high specific surface areas (500-1100 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (0.6-2.0 cm(3)/g), and highly accessible large mesopores (7-10.3 nm). The particle size of the carbon microspheres can be easily tuned by simply using templates with different macropore sizes. It was found that the smaller MC-MSs (330 nm) with higher surface-to-volume ratio tend to shape into an integral monolithic MC-MS matrix and larger MC-MSs (>800 nm) with lower surface-to-volume ratio to discrete spherical morphology. This feature is attributed to the difference in shrinkage behavior of mesoporous carbon spheres confined in the macropores caused by the interaction between the silica wall and carbon microspheres. Adsorption experiments indicate that the cobalt-based nanoparticle-incorporated mesoporous carbon microspheres exhibit excellent size selectivity for protein adsorption in a complex solution and good magnetic separability for easy recycling.

Abstract:A simple strategy for the synthesis of macro-mesoporous carbonaceous monolith materials has been demonstrated through an organic-organic self-assembly at the interface of an organic scaffold such as polyurethane (PU) foam. Hierarchically porous carbonaceous monoliths with cubic (Im \(\bar 3\) m) or hexagonal (p6mm) mesostructure were prepared through evaporation induced self-assembly of the mesostructure on the three-dimensional (3-D) interconnecting struts of the PU foam scaffold. The preparation was carried out by using phenol/formaldehyde resol as a carbon precursor, triblock copolymer F127 as a template for the mesostructure and PU foam as a sacrificial monolithic scaffold. Their hierarchical pore system was macroscopically fabricated with cable-like mesostructured carbonaceous struts. The carbonaceous monoliths exhibit macropores of diameter 100–450 μm, adjustable uniform mesopores (3.8–7.5 nm), high surface areas (200–870 m2/g), and large pore volumes (0.17–0.58) cm3/g. Compared with the corresponding evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) process on a planar substrate, this facile process is a time-saving, labor-saving, space-saving, and highly efficient pathway for mass production of ordered mesoporous materials.
Self-Directed Assembly Of Organosilanes Into Helically Mesoporous Nanocomposites

Abstract:Mesoporous silica nanocomposites are typically synthesized by co-assembling organosilanes and surfactants, followed by removal of surfactant molecules. Self-directed assembly of bridged silsesquioxanes which exploits non-covalent interactions generally produces mesoscopically ordered lamellar solid materials. Here we explore the unique assembly behavior of a porphyrin-bridged silsesquioxane and first reports the synthesis of mesoporous materials by directed assembly of organosilane, without using any surfactant. The resultant mesopores are uniform with a chiral structure, and the mesoporous nanocomposites also exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties and thermal stability. These unique structures and properties provide new platforms for many applications. Particularly, this research provides an efficient synthetic paradigm to a family of functional and mesoporous materials through a neat one-step process, compared to the lengthy operation in a co-assembly approach.

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolites were synthesized by a new organosilane template with double-oxycarbonyl carbon chains. The structure of the zeolite crystals was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which showed that their structure has the same characteristics as ZSM-5 zeolites, and there were about 4 um mesopores in the acquired zeolites.
