Abstract:As an advanced analytical technology, Ion Chromatography (IC) has been widely used in various fields. At present, it is faced with the challenges of sample complexity and instrument precision. It is necessary to select appropriate pretreatment methods to achieve sample preparation and protect the instruments. Therefore, this paper reviews several commonly used sample pretreatment technologies in IC, focusing on sample digestion and purification techniques. Additionally, we introduce some advanced IC technologies and automatic sample processing devices. We provide a comprehensive summary of the basic principles, primary applications and the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Pretreatment methods should be carefully selected and optimized on the specific characteristics of the sample and the ions to be measured, in order to achieve better analysis results.

Abstract:By coupling a sample pretreatment technique of sample clean up and enrichment power with capillary electrophoresis (CE) of high-performance separation, the task of analyzing trace analytes in a complex matrix such as a biological sample can be carried out successfully with ease. This review aims for providing an overview of strategies to couple sample pretreatment techniques with capillary and related microscale (e.g., microchip) electrophoresis, practically adoptable in an automatic manner, without requiring serious modification of existing instruments to install sophisticated interfaces. In-line sample pretreatment techniques based on liquid phase microextraction performed before sample injection and on-line sample preconcentration techniques performed during or after sample injection are discussed with emphasis on the applicability to samples of high conductivity, commonly encountered for biological samples. An overview of the recent developments in microfluidic immobilized enzymatic microreactors which fit excellently to microchip CE is also given.

Abstract:Ion chromatography (IC) is widely used in the anions and cations analysis for its rapid detection and high sensitivity. With the increasing requirement of detecting organic of samples, developing a suitable pretreatment method is important. Pyrolysis apparatus can be operated automatically and easily with high sensitivity and good repeatability. In the paper, the basic principles and types of burners are introduced. The pyrolysis combined with ion chromatography (pyrolysis-IC) are applied in biology, petroleum, coal, materials, environment and other organic samples. The further development of pyrolysis-IC are also introduced.

Abstract:Sample preparation is a major task in a regulated bioanalytical laboratory. The sample preparation procedure significantly impacts assay throughput, data quality, analysis cost, and employee satisfaction. Therefore, selecting and optimizing an appropriate sample preparation method is essential for successful method development. Because of our recent expertise, this article is focused on sample preparation for high‐performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (LC‐MS) is the most common detection technique for small molecules used in regulated bioanalytical laboratories. The sample preparation technologies discussed are pre‐extraction and post‐extraction sample processing, protein precipitation (PPT), liquid–liquid extraction (LLE), offline solid‐phase extraction (SPE), and online solid‐phase extraction. Since all these techniques were in use for more than two decades, numerous applications and variations exist for each technique. We will not attempt to categorize each variation. Rather, the development history, a brief theoretical background, and selected references are presented. The strengths and the limitations of each method are discussed, including the throughput improvement potential. Abstract:Analytical atomic spectrometry is a well-established and widely-used analytical technique for the sensitive detection of inorganic elements in diverse samples. Sample pretreatment methods are still a critical part of elemental analysis, which are usually used to remove interfering matrix components and preconcentrate the targets of interest before analysis. Significant advances in the development of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for elemental analysis have been made in recent years. This review focuses on the applications of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for analytical atomic spectrometry, including liquid phase (micro)extraction, cloud point extraction, solid phase (micro)extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, chemical vapor generation as well as hyphenated techniques. This review presents several applications of the above sample pretreatment methods in recent years, whose advantages and drawbacks were also discussed.

Abstract:Biological samples are complex and often contain many proteins, lipids and other contaminants, which affect the separation and ionization properties of the analytes. Moreover, the concentration of the analytes is very low in comparison with that of the interfering substances. Therefore, the development of biological sample preparation methods has become more and more challenging. The objective of this review is to provide a broad overview of the main biological samples (urine, blood, plasma, serum, hair, human breast milk, saliva, sweat and skin surface lipids, fecal and tissue), recent advances and applications of various sample preparation methods prior to chromatography, spectrometry and electrochemistry analysis over the past five years. Novel and modern approaches in biological sample preparation are especially emphasized. Finally, challenges and future perspectives to improve development of sample preparation methods are described.

Abstract:Sample pretreatment is an important part for qualitative and quantitative analysis of targets in analytical chemistry. With the rapid development of adsorbents in material science, selective adsorbents have been found particularly practical in sample pretreatment due to their resistance to complex matrix interference. Selective adsorbents concern formation of selective recognition sites, involving diverse interactions and distinct size/shape matching cavities for targets, which can selectively extract targets from complex real samples. In this review, selective adsorbents constructed in recent years have been summarized, involving molecularly imprinted polymers (summarizing from faced typical challenges, such as template leakage, low adsorption capacity, poor resistance to macromolecular interference and difficulty in aqueous recognition) and non-imprinted selective adsorbents (discussing from representative types of adsorbents with selectivity). Meanwhile, we concentrate on the application of selective adsorbents in complex sample pretreatment. Finally, a conclusion and a brief assessment of future developments in this area are revealed.

Abstract:Ion chromatography (IC) plays a crucial role in urine analysis for diverse medical diagnoses. This paper reviews a comprehensive investigation into urine pretreatment techniques, as well as the design and development of IC systems for the measurement of various chemicals. Prior to analysis, urine samples commonly undergo pretreatment procedures such as dilution, filtration, purification, and concentration. These steps effectively eliminate interfering factors and facilitate the accurate and sensitive analysis of ultra-trace components. To separate and quantify different chemical elements or ions present in urine, a range of homemade or commercially available columns coupled with various detectors were employed. This study focuses on the analysis of chemicals such as heavy metals, halogens, pesticides, drugs, and other essential or toxic substances by IC methods.

Abstract:The extraction methods of saccharides from plants were developed from solid-liquid extraction toultrasonic extraction and microwave assisted extraction, and achieved the results of sample and solvent con-sumption, high speed and environment friendly. The solid phase extraction was adopted into purification process, and its packings have being modified all the way on structures and functions, the materials variedfrom C18, NH2,ion exchange column to molecularly imprinting materials and optimized ionic liquid column. As to detec-tion, different methods were developed for monosaccharides to meet the requirements of chromatographic analysis, because most of them leak UV absorption and fluorescence properties. In this paper, the development of sample pretreatment methods and chromatographic analysis of monosaccharides in the plant samples was reviewed. The extraction, purification, separation and detection of monosaccharides from different samples were discussed.

Abstract:Sample pretreatment in analytical chemistry is critical, and the selection of materials for sample pretreatment is a key factor for high enrichment ability, good practicality, and satisfactory recoveries. In this review, the recent progress of the sample pretreatment methods based on various nanomaterials (i.e., carbon nanomaterials, porous nanomaterials, and magnetic nanomaterials) with excellent adsorption efficiency, selectivity, and reproducibility, as well as their applications, are presented. Due to the unique nanoscale physical–chemical properties, magnetic nanomaterials have been used for the extraction of target analytes by easy-to-handle magnetic separation under a magnetic field, which can avoid cumbersome centrifugation and filtration steps. This review also highlights the preparation process and reaction mechanism of nanomaterials used in the sample pretreatment methods, which have been applied for the extraction organophosphorus pesticides, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, phenoxy carboxylic acids, tetracycline antibiotics, hazardous metal ions, and rosmarinic acid. In addition, the remaining challenges and future directions for nanomaterials used as sorbents in the sample pretreatment are discussed.

Abstract:A Gentle method of group separation of low molecular weight hydrophilic natural products is reported. The method is based on separation of the compounds according to their net charge at different pH values using different types of ion-exchange columns connected in series. Precolumns retaining interfering compounds are used in some cases. Elution of the compounds retained on the columns is performed by use of volatile eluents. The elution principle for two of the ion-exchangers in question is removal of the charges on the column materials while for the third column the positive net charge on the compounds retained is removed. Thereby, the total amount of ions retained on the different columns is released and eluted into small volumes, which after evaporation leaves the ions as well defined salts. The method is experimentally simple and efficient to separation of natural products into groups suitable to direct use in sensitive methods of analysis as e.g. high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. Combinations of these column chromatographic methods have been adpated for micro or semimicro determinations of naturally occurring compounds, e.g., aromatic choline esters, amines, amino acids and esters of phenolic carboxylic acids. The methods seem to be general practicable for group separation of low molecular weight hydrophilic compounds.

Abstract:Recent progress in capillary ion chromatography is reviewed at two aspects of preparation of capillary ion chromatographic columns and manufacture of capillary ion chromatography instrument. The content of capillary ion chromatographic column includes open tubular ion chromatographic column, particle packed capillary ion chromatographic column and monolithic capillary ion chromatographic column. And the content of capillary ion chromatography instrument includes micro-flow pump, injector, suppressors, conductometric detectors, UV-Vis detectors and fluorescence detectors with small volumes.

Abstract:An ion chromatographic method with on-line sample pretreatment was developed for the trace analysis of seven common anions in concentrated matrices. The pretreatment column used in this study consisted of polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). It was too hydrophobic to retain different inorganic anions, but it showed a strong affinity for organic compounds. Thus, this chromatographic system could be used to detect trace anions in organic solvents, organic acids and relevant salts. The addition of MWCNTs decreased the surface areas of stationary phases and the retention times of organic matrices were shortened. Compared with conventional column-switching technique, only a single instrument (ICS2100) was needed in this system, including a pump, a conductivity detector, an eluent generator, a six-port valve and a ten-port valve. An electrochemical self-generating suppressor (ESGS) was adopted to convert the eluent of KOH into water for the matrix elimination. Two different eluent were employed in the chromatographic system, one for separation and the other for matrix elimination. The sample pretreatment and analysis were realized simultaneously. After optimization of this system, a calibration study was conducted by preparing and analyzing eight concentrations (between 5 and 5000μgL−1) of mixture standards of seven anions in deionized water. The linearity was between 0.9990 and 0.9998, and the detection limits ranged from 0.41 to 3.17μgL−1. A spiking study was performed on three representative organic chemicals with satisfactory recoveries between 88.1% and 118.5% when the concentrations of the matrices did not exceed 10gL−1.

Abstract:Sample pretreatment is an important process in the analysis of complex samples such as food, biological and environmental samples due to numerous interferences in sample matrix and low concentration of targets. Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene (G) have been investigated as sorbents possessing strong absorbability in sample preparation. Recently, carbon nanomaterials functionalized with ionic liquids (CNMs-ILs) have been rapidly used as new sorbent with high selectivity for specific analytes or analyte class. ILs not only exhibit features such as variable miscibility, viscosity, and high thermal stability, but also have alterable ionic and organic moieties in their structure. This review focuses on recent applications of CNMs-ILs sorbents in sample pretreatment with special emphasis on the selectivity and extraction performance improvement for analytes by using CNMs-ILs, based on research published from 2012 to 2018. Furthermore, this review summarizes the functionalization methods of CNMs with ILs.

Abstract:Sample preparation procedures in use in many application areas are still tedious and manually intensive protocols. These characteristics mean that sample treatment is considered the most time-consuming and error-prone part of the analytical scheme. The increasing demand for faster, more cost-effective and environmental friendly analytical methods is a major incentive to improve these conventional procedures and has spurred research in this field during the last decades. This review provides an overview of the most relevant developments and successful approaches proposed in recent years concerning sample preparation. The current state-of-the-art is discussed on the basis of examples selected from representative application areas and involving conventional instrumental techniques for the final determination of the target compounds. Emphasis will be on those techniques and approaches that have already demonstrated their practicality by the analysis of real-life samples, and in particular on those dealing with the determination of minor organic components. The potential of the latest developments in this field for sample treatment simplification and complete hyphenation and integration of analytical process is discussed and the most pressing remaining limitations evaluated.
