Abstract:We deal with various splitting methods in algebraic logic. The word `splitting' refers to splitting some of the atoms in a given relation or cylindric algebra each into one or more subatoms obtaining a bigger algebra, where the number of subatoms obtained after splitting is adjusted for a certain combinatorial purpose. This number (of subatoms) can be an infinite cardinal. The idea originates with Leon Henkin. Splitting methods existing in a scattered form in the literature, possibly under different names, proved useful in obtaining (negative) results on non-atom canonicity, non-finite axiomatizability and non-first order definability for various classes of relation and cylindric algebras. In a unified framework, we give several known and new examples of each. Our framework covers Monk's splitting, Andréka's splitting, and, also, so-called blow up and blur constructions involving splitting (atoms) in finite Monk-like algebras and rainbow algebras.

Abstract:A graph is a split graph if its vertex set can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. A split graph is unbalanced if there exist two such partitions that are distinct. Cheng, Collins and Trenk (2016), discovered the following interesting counting fact: unlabeled, unbalanced split graphs on $n$ vertices can be placed into a bijection with all unlabeled split graphs on $n-1$ or fewer vertices. In this paper we translate these concepts and the theorem to different combinatorial settings: minimal set covers, bipartite graphs with a distinguished block and posets of height one.

Abstract:We study splitting chains in $\mathscr{P}(\omega)$, that is, families of subsets of $\omega$ which are linearly ordered by $\subseteq^*$ and which are splitting. We prove that their existence is independent of axioms of $\mathsf{ZFC}$. We show that they can be used to construct certain peculiar Banach spaces: twisted sums of $C(\omega^*)=\ell_\infty/c_0$ and $c_0(\mathfrak c)$. Also, we consider splitting chains in a topological setting, where they give rise to the so called tunnels.

The total graph of R is the simple undirected graph T(Γ(R)) with vertices all elements of R, and two distinct vertices x and y are adjacent if and only if x + y ∈ Z(R). This type of graphs has been studied by many authors. In this paper, we state many of the main results on the total graph of a ring and its related graphs.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a semigroup with $0$ and $R$ be a ring with $1$. We extend the definition of the zero-divisor graphs of commutative semigroups to not necessarily commutative semigroups. We define an annihilating-ideal graph of a ring as a special type of zero-divisor graph of a semigroup. We introduce two ways to define the zero-divisor graphs of semigroups. The first definition gives a directed graph ${\Gamma}(S)$, and the other definition yields an undirected graph $\overline{\Gamma}(S)$. It is shown that $\Gamma(S)$ is not necessarily connected, but $\overline{\Gamma}(S)$ is always connected and ${\rm diam}(\overline{\Gamma}(S))\leq 3$. For a ring $R$ define a directed graph $\Bbb{APOG}(R)$ to be equal to $\Gamma(\Bbb{IPO}(R))$, where $\Bbb{IPO}(R)$ is a semigroup consisting of all products of two one-sided ideals of $R$, and define an undirected graph $\overline{\Bbb{APOG}}(R)$ to be equal to $\overline{\Gamma}(\Bbb{IPO}(R))$. We show that $R$ is an Artinian (resp., Noetherian) ring if and only if $\Bbb{APOG}(R)$ has DCC (resp., ACC) on some special subset of its vertices. Also, It is shown that $\overline{\Bbb{APOG}}(R)$ is a complete graph if and only if either $(D(R))^{2}=0$, $R$ is a direct product of two division rings, or $R$ is a local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ such that $\Bbb{IPO}(R)=\{0,\mathfrak{m},\mathfrak{m}^{2}, R\}$. Finally, we investigate the diameter and the girth of square matrix rings over commutative rings $M_{n\times n}(R)$ where $n\geq 2$.

Abstract:The paper systematically classifies rings based on the dominant metric dimensions (Ddim) of their associated CZDG, establishing consequential bounds for the Ddim of these compressed zero-divisor graphs. The authors investigate the interplay between the ring-theoretic properties of a ring ( R ) and associated CZDG. An undirected graph consisting of vertex set ( Z(R_E)\{[0]}\ =\ R_E\{[0],[1]}), where ( R_E=\{[x]:\ x\in R\} ) and ([x]=\{y\in R:\ \text{ann}(x)=\text{ann}(y)\} ) is called a compressed zero-divisor graph, denoted by ( \Gamma_E(R) ). An edge is formed between two vertices ([x]) and ([y]) of ( Z(R_E) ) if and only if ([x][y]=[xy]=[0]), that is, iff ( xy=0 ). For a ring ( R ), graph ( G ) is said to be realizable as ( \Gamma_E(R) ) if ( G ) is isomorphic to ( \Gamma_E(R) ). Moreover, an exploration into the Ddim of realizable graphs for rings is conducted, complemented by illustrative examples reinforcing the presented results. A recent discussion within the paper elucidates the nuanced relationship between Ddim, diameter, and girth within the domain of compressed zero-divisor graphs. This research offers a comprehensive and insightful analysis at the intersection of algebraic structures and graph theory, providing valuable contributions to the current mathematical discourse.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a ring (not necessary commutative) with non-zero identity. The unit graph of $R$, denoted by $G(R)$, is a graph with elements of $R$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $a+b$ is a unit element of $R$. It was proved that if $R$ is a commutative ring and $\fm$ is a maximal ideal of $R$ such that $|R/\fm|=2$, then $G(R)$ is a complete bipartite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring. In this paper we generalize this result by showing that if $R$ is a ring (not necessary commutative), then $G(R)$ is a complete $r$-partite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring and $r=|R/m|=2^n$, for some $n \in \N$ or $R$ is a finite field. Among other results we show that if $R$ is a left Artinian ring, $2 \in U(R)$ and the clique number of $G(R)$ is finite, then $R$ is a finite ring.

Abstract:A celebrated theorem of Fröberg gives a complete combinatorial classification of quadratic square-free monomial ideals with a linear resolution. A generalization of this theorem to higher degree square-free monomial ideals is an active area of research. The existence of a linear resolution of such ideals often depends on the field over which the polynomial ring is defined. Hence, it is too much to expect that in the higher degree case a linear resolution can be identified purely using a combinatorial feature of an associated combinatorial structure. However, some classes of ideals having linear resolutions have been identified using combinatorial structures. In the present paper, we use the notion of $r$-independence to construct an $r$-uniform hypergraph from the given graph. We then show that when the underlying graph is co-chordal, the corresponding edge ideal is vertex splittable, a condition stronger than having a linear resolution. We use this result to explicitly compute graded Betti numbers for various graph classes. Finally, we give a different proof for the existence of a linear resolution using the topological notion of $r$-collapsibility.

Abstract:There has been a growing research interest in exploring rings whose modules are either injective or far from being injective to a specified degree. As is commonly observed in each of such scenarios, rings can be broken as a direct sum of a semisimple Artinian ring and an indecomposable ring having zero or (essential) homogeneous right socle. Although this phenomenon has become increasingly expected and less surprising with every new study, proving it has never become easier, and in most cases, it has been obtained as a result of considerable efforts. This work aims to bring such studies to a common denominator and tries to explain why this phenomenon occurs each time we deal with the same type of problem.

Abstract:We show that the relative Farrell-Jones assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups for algebraic K-theory is split injective in the setting where the coefficients are additive categories with group action. This generalizes a result of Bartels for rings as coefficients. We give an explicit description of the relative term. This enables us to show that it vanishes rationally if we take coefficients in a regular ring. Moreover, it is, considered as a Z[Z/2]-module by the involution coming from taking dual modules, an extended module and in particular all its Tate cohomology groups vanish, provided that the infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of type I of G are orientable. The latter condition is for instance satisfied for torsionfree hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself compatible with a relative cyclic splitting. Two $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees are \emph{equivalent} if they are both compatible with a common tree in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. We give a similar description of the Gromov boundary of the graph of maximally-cyclic splittings.

Abstract:This article investigates the concept of dominant metric dimensions in zero divisor graphs (ZD-graphs) associated with rings. Consider a finite commutative ring with unity, denoted as R, where nonzero elements x and y are identified as zero divisors if their product results in zero (x.y=0). The set of zero divisors in ring R is referred to as L(R). To analyze various algebraic properties of R, a graph known as the zero-divisor graph is constructed using L(R). This manuscript establishes specific general bounds for the dominant metric dimension (Ddim) concerning the ZD-graph of R. To achieve this objective, we examine the zero divisor graphs for specific rings, such as the ring of Gaussian integers modulo m, denoted as Zm[i], the ring of integers modulo n, denoted as Zn, and some quotient polynomial rings. Our research unveils new insights into the structural similarities and differences among commutative rings sharing identical metric dimensions and dominant metric dimensions. Additionally, we present a general result outlining bounds for the dominant metric dimension expressed in terms of the maximum degree, girth, clique number, and diameter of the associated ZD-graphs. Through this exploration, we aim to provide a comprehensive framework for analyzing commutative rings and their associated zero divisor graphs, thereby advancing both theoretical knowledge and practical applications in diverse domains.

Abstract:We present an extension of the notion of in-splits from symbolic dynamics to topological graphs and, more generally, to -correspondences. We demonstrate that in-splits provide examples of strong shift equivalences of -correspondences. Furthermore, we provide a streamlined treatment of Muhly, Pask, and Tomforde's proof that any strong shift equivalence of regular -correspondences induces a (gauge-equivariant) Morita equivalence between Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. For topological graphs, we prove that in-splits induce diagonal-preserving gauge-equivariant -isomorphisms in analogy with the results for Cuntz-Krieger algebras. Additionally, we examine the notion of out-splits for -correspondences.

Abstract:Let R be a commutative ring with nonzero identity and Z(R) be its set of zero-divisors. The new extension of the zero-divisor graph $\widetilde{\Gamma }(R)$ with vertices $Z(R)^{\star }$, and two distinct vertices x and y are adjacent if and only if $xy=0$ or $x+y\in Z(R)$. In this article, we study, in the general case, the graph $\widetilde{\Gamma }(R)$. For any commutative ring R, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions for $\widetilde{\Gamma }(R)$ and $\widetilde{\Gamma }(R[x_1,\dots , x_n])$ to be complete. At last, we present some other properties of this new extension of the zero-divisor graph.

Abstract:We use constructions of versal cohomology classes based on a new notion of ‘presentable functors’, to describe a relationship between the problems of bounding symbol length in cohomology and of finding the minimal degree of a splitting field. The constructions involved are then also used to describe generic splitting varieties for degree 2 cohomology with coefficients in a commutative algebraic group of multiplicative type.

Abstract:A \textbf{strong arc decomposition} of a (multi-)digraph $D(V, A)$ is a partition of its arc set $A$ into two disjoint arc sets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both of the spanning subdigraphs $D(V, A_1)$ and $D(V, A_2)$ are strong. In this paper, we fully characterize all split digraphs that do not have a strong decomposition. This resolves two problems proposed by Bang-Jensen and Wang and contributes to a series of efforts aimed at addressing this problem for specific graph classes. This work continues the research on semicomplete composition [Bang-Jensen, Gutin and Yeo, J. Graph Theory, 2020]; on locally semicomplete digraphs [Bang-Jensen and Huang, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2010]; on a type of tournaments [Bang-Jensen and Yeo, Combinatorica, 2004].
