Abstract:The 6300-km long Yangtze River is the largest and longest river in China with a drainage area of 1.80 million km(2). The sediment transportation in the river is complex. Debris flow frequently occurs in the dry and hot valleys in the upstream reaches and has become the main form of sediment transportation from numerous gullies to the tributaries of the Yangtze River. The sediment carrying capacity of the debris flows is 40 times higher than normal sediment laden flows. The total sediment yield from the drainage area of the upper reaches is 2.17 billion tons per year. The sediment carrying capacity of the currents in the tributaries is much lower than load from debris flows and only a small part of the total sediment load from gullies is transported into the Yangtze River. The annual runoff increases from upstream to downstream along the course but the annual sediment load increases from the source to Yichang (the Three Gorges Dam site) reaching its highest amount of about 500 million tons/year. Downstream of Yichang the river flows out of the mountains and enters its alluvial reaches in the middle and lower reaches. Sediment load in the upper reaches is proportional to the flow discharge in flood and low flow seasons. The sediment load in the middle and lower reaches is proportional to the flow discharge in the low flow season but is not related to the discharge in the flood season because a lot of sediment is wash load in the flood season. The sediment load reduced along the course in the middle reaches due to deposition. The riverbed profile in the middle and lower reaches was developing toward the equilibrium profile defined by the minimum stream power but the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir interrupts and modifiers this fluvial process. The Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River is the largest hydro-project in China, which is regulating the flow for power generation. To mitigate reservoir sedimentation and channel erosion in the downstream reaches, the reservoir is operate in the mode of "storing the clear and releasing the turbid", which is the main strategy for sedimentation control. The sediment transportation in the middle and lower reaches is affected and the middle reaches have changed from siltation to erosion since the impoundment of the reservoir in 2002.
